Camera Backpack Fits Under Airplane Seat

I'm trying to find a backpack that I can stick a body and a few lenses in that also fits under the seat in front of me on an airplane. I have been looking all weekend and can't find one. I already have a ThinkTank Airport International v2.0 roller bag that goes in the overhead bins but once I add my 300mm 2.8 in I will have to take a body out and a few lenses to get everything else in. Does anyone know of a bag that could do this? Would also like to be able to put my Macbook Pro in it as well.

Below is an image showing the new Canon cinema lens with servo that will be announced shortly. It’s the lens in the front with the red ring and will cost 5 figures, so it’s definitely aimed at the professional market.

NAB in Las Vegas starts April 5, 2014 and runs until April 10, 2014.

We’re currently not expecting any new announcements for Cinema EOS bodies, beyond the possibility of a development announcement.

More to come….

We’re told that Canon will announce the PowerShot G17 some time in May. That is an extremely fast refresh from the PowerShot G16, which was announced last August. The PowerShot G16 was a very minor refresh from the G15.

Specifications

24-200mm f/1.4-2.0 lens

New 1″ Sensor

all magnesium body with comfortable grip

The lens looks pretty impressive if this turns out to be true.

Is this you in the Shanghai smogscape?

Wandering around Shanghai's Pearl Tower with an Ixus 310HS in hand, I couldn't resist taking this shot of a Canon-lover posing posing for a Nikon.

You can see on the left how the distant buildings are lost in smog. This was a sunny day. It is so sad that Shanghai has this year succumbed to severe pollution. There follow a shot in mid-afternoon from the Pearl Tower over the smog-shrouded city, and another of relatively close buildings lost in the smog.

(All taken on the little Ixus 310HS I bought as a foolproof point and shoot for my wife last week - sold dirt cheap from the local dealer clearing out old stock. The little Canons are just so good).

Kayaking

Hi Folks.
I took these on my first outing with my new 70-200 f2.8L II, I have to say I was completely blown away by its sharpness and focusing speed, ok my only previous reference has been my third party lenses, but wow!
Sorry no shot details, I have posted these from my iPad and it is too painfull trying to get the exif, it is in the images.
Perhaps later when I have time to sit at a pc I will put the details on. Shots straight from camera, shot raw + Ljpeg, thanks to the 7D frame rate and buffer depth with this setting I got what I think are some cool shots.

This young lady saw me getting set up and was very kind and waited for a thumbs up before going!

Thanks for looking, constructive criticism, suggestions welcome.

Back button AF problem

Hi guys,

I switch to back-button AF but have a very annoying problem. Whenever i move my AF point then press the back-button AF, the AF point jumps to the centre, focuses, then moves back the starting point, missing my chosen focus... I can't see how to turn this off? Any help?

I know I have read about this on the forum before, but i failed to find it, so sorry for the repetition!

Pixel King help

I just ordered the pixel king transceiver and 2 receivers (not the new Pro models) . I have three canon 430 ex II's.

I don't know if I'm missing something but I have both receivers set to channel one and both group A. Both flashes on the receivers are turned on and set to ettl.

The problem comes up with the transceiver part. I have the 430 ex II turned on and set to ettl. The transceiver is turned on to group A channel 1. So when I take a test picture both receiver flashes fire but the flash on the transceiver does not fire. Am i missing something on the set up or do I have a defective transceiver? (I switched the flashes around so its not a flash problem). I also am using a 6D.

Hope this is enough information for you to understand my problem. Thanks for the help.

Basic home studio setup question

Howdy all,
I have a question regarding a home studio setup. I would like to take individual portraits of my family so I can learn and improve my portraiture photography skills. I'm not looking to invest a lot of money right now (for this topic, a lot to me is over $500) and was wondering if a speedlite setup would work for me. I've searched the forums and found that most home studio folks are using Einsteins or Alien Bees strobes, but I'm not ready to invest that much and was hoping to use the two flashes I have, and a simple background to get going. The bad part is I'm not sure if I need anything else or not. I know that sounds silly, but I keep going in circles so I'm seeking advice on what to start with.

My signature includes what I currently own.

I was thinking of getting two shoot through umbrellas (Westcott perhaps) and a Westcott X-Drop background with white and black backdrops. I do not currently have the room for larger backdrops right now, and what I end up using needs to be portable as I don't have a dedicated space in my house for this. This is where I go in circles. Are umbrellas the right choice, or should I be looking at softboxes for my speedlights? Are speedlights the right answer here, or is continuous lighting/strobes necessary to work with? blah blah blah. I was hoping that one of you portrait photographers out there could provide some guidance. I don't want expensive, but I also don't want poor build quality. It is also okay for me to out grow the beginner solution and replace it should this lead to continued growth as a photographer, or a side job. For now, it's for my own achievement purposes.

Thanks a lot for all of your feedback,

Wes

Want to use rear LCD screen as a JPG viewer, but no luck!

I want to be able to copy some JPG images onto my Compact Flash card, put it into my camera, and scroll through the images on the LCD screen, like I do with images I just shot. It seems like a simple thing, but it's not happening.

Here's what I've been doing:

I put the CF card in the card reader and use Windows Explorer to transfer some JPG files from my hard drive to the active folder on the CF card. In this case, the folder is named 100EOS7D. When I try to view the JPGs on the camera screen, they aren't there.

Just for fun I tried this with a Canon RAW file and I was able to view it on the screen. Tried again with a DNG image file and no luck.

Any ideas on how I can make this work?

Both my 5D3 and my 7D do the same thing. It seems odd, since you can save your images as JPGs and view them easily, but when you copy in a JPG from your computer, it is not recognized by the camera.

Thanks in advance!

Canon PowerShot SX 60 IS 100x Zoom Mentioned Again [CR1]

We continue to receive little bits of information about the upcoming Canon PowerShot SX60 IS. We should be seeing this highly popular superzoom some time in the spring.

The latest we’ve heard is the camera will have a 100x zoom and will have a focal length range of 20-2000mm. This goes along with what most sources have previously said. I’d get one just for the fun of 2000mm!

Looking for an upgrade to my shorty 40 (indoor/general lens)

I shoot on a t4i and currently own just two lenses - the Canon 85 1.8, and the Canon 40 2.8. I generally use the 85 outdoors and the 40 indoors, and that works pretty well for me.

The quality difference between my two lenses is pretty big though. The bokeh on my 85 is awesome, and it's also super sharp. I know this is a little biased because I generally use it in better lighting conditions, but I think it's objectively a much better lens. I'd like to get something just as good for my indoor uses (parties, pictures of my 1 year old, etc).

One option would be the Sigma 35mm 1.4, which is at the very top of the price range I could consider ($900). Coming in a little less would be the Canon 35mm 2.0. Would I notice enough of a quality upgrade going from the 40 to the 35? Anything else I should be considering?

Thanks.

Reasons to get a ST-E3-RT?

Hi,

I have 4 600EX RT speedlights + Elinchrom strobes (which I am triggering optically). Is there any reason I should get a ST-E3-RT transmitter? Does it offer any functionality which my non-firing 600 will not provide?

I'm getting a great deal on the ST-E3-RT which seems too good to miss. I'm only concerned whether it will actually be useful of will simply end up as unused gear.

Best regards ... J.R.

PS: I did own the ST-E3-RT at one point of time (part of 2 600s kit) but there was a local guy at the photography club who bought it from me for pretty much the full price the day it arrived. I'm getting one now used, at roughly half the price.

Lens deals suddenly dry up

As someone looking to save on a 70-200 f2.8 ll, the recent 20% midnight sale was a cruel tease. Suddenly it seems like all lens deals are gone, prices are up. We're told discount pricing will be stopped by Canon.
What's going on ?

I'll wait. A week, a month, six months ? I'm just going to wait. List prices are pretty damn high if you ask me.

Magic Lantern enhances 6D GPS

Good news for us 6d folk: The ML devs have finally figures out how Canon stores their gps values and are on to adding features, I hope we'll get some basic gps tracking ("car finder mode") or even real geocaching soon.

For the time being, nightly adds a power saving option so that gps is turned off at power down and automatically turned on again on power on ... no dead batteries anymore :-)

Cinema EOS C200 & C400 at NAB? [CR1]

EOSHD has posted about the possibility of an EOS C200 and EOS C400 for NAB 2014 in April.

According to EOSHD’s source, Canon will introduce the Cinema EOS C200 as a new entry level 4K camera, and the semi-pro Cinema EOS C400 sitting under the EOS C500.

CR’s Take

We have it from pretty good sources that Canon is announcing a few things, but not any cameras. However, there’s always a possibility that Canon has kept the existence of a C200 & C400 to a very small and select group of people and the other goodies are for a broader audience.

We’ve heard absolutely nothing about a C200 and C400, however that doesn’t remove the possibility of their existence, as this site isn’t the first place cinema people go.

The other possibility is these cameras could receive “development announcement” status and wouldn’t be part of the regular product announcement process.

Zeiss Announces CZ.2 15-30 T/2.9 Compact Zoom

HTML:

<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=16179"></g:plusone>

ZEISS is launching the Compact Zoom CZ.2 15-30/T2.9 at this year’s NAB Show in Las Vegas from April 7-10, 2014. The third member of the Compact Zoom family broadens the cine zoom line-up in the wide-angle range. From August 2014, the lens will be available for € 17,900 or US$ 23,900 (excl. VAT)*. The new zoom lens fills the wide-angle gap and complements the already available CZ.2 28-80/T2.9 and CZ.2 70-200/T2.9 lenses. It does not only offer extreme angles of view but also fulfills all the requirements for motion picture zooms: It stands out for its optical brilliance, as well as its distortion-free images.

The ZEISS Compact Zoom CZ.2 family of lenses sets new standards only experienced with fixed focal lengths from ZEISS. Equipped with this set of three zoom lenses, cinematographers can master an enormous range of shooting situations without having to resort to frequent time-consuming lens switches. For sophisticated filmmakers, the ZEISS cine zooms open up new creative possibilities. When working with a zoom lens, you can move a lot more quickly because you don’t have to change lenses and can make different shots from the same perspective.

The ZEISS Compact Zoom lenses are the only cine-style zooms in the world with full-frame coverage. All three zooms were calculated for the full-frame format of 36×24 mm. As a result, they are also compatible with image sensors larger than Super 35 (ex: image diagonal 31.5 mm) and therefore already ready to accommodate future developments in the field of growing sensor sizes. When the lenses are used on Super 35 cameras, users benefit from the positive “sweet-spot effect”: the image circle used by the sensor comes from the inner circle of the lens. As a result, the lens only uses that part of the illumination that has the highest quality in terms of sharpness, light and contrast. In line with the reliable and strict quality requirements that ZEISS lenses are subject to, all three representatives of the Compact Zoom family enable 4K capture.

The cine zooms from ZEISS are masters of flexibility whenever the goal is to achieve high-quality results with little lens changes. The optical balancing between ZEISS cine zooms on the one hand and ZEISS high-end cine lenses on the other fulfills filmmakers’ highest demands, whether they are making big-screen, TV, documentary, music video productions or feature films. All three zooms have a consistent aperture of T2.9, also making them suitable for situations with less available light. And thanks to the established ZEISS color matching, the lenses can be used in combination with the existing lens families ARRI/ZEISS Master Prime, ARRI/ZEISS Ultra Prime and ZEISS Compact Prime, with no additional color grading needed.

Over many years, ZEISS has been continuing to develop the bokeh – that special look of an out-of-focus area in an image. After all, bokeh is one of the most important characteristics of a lens. With special optical design and circular f-stop forms, ZEISS zooms here achieve a particularly harmonious result and depict out-of-focus highlights as circular without any bothersome artifacts. In addition, the Carl Zeiss T* coating – based on several layers in the nano field – ensures a visible reduction of stray light and reflections. The result: brilliant images with a three-dimensional effect.

A special protection against dust and spray water for rough use on the set underscores the high professional standard of these cine lenses.

The cine zooms from ZEISS deliver the well-known quality and performance for which ZEISS lenses have been known for decades. For cinematographers on smaller budgets in particular, it is critical to make safe investments in their equipment. On this point, the Compact Zoom CZ.2 lenses stand out strongly: due to the interchangeable mount system (IMS), with currently five different mounts (PL, EF, F, MFT und E), the lenses can be fitted without problems onto different camera mounts. As a result, the zooms can always be used on the latest camera models, and always in an optimal system mix.

All three lenses – the new Compact Zoom CZ.2 15-30/T2.9, the CZ.2 28-80/T2.9 and the CZ.2 70-200/T2.9 – will also be available as a complete set (without transport case) for € 44,999 € or US$ 59,900 (excl. VAT)*.

Remote Shooting with the 1D X + Ethernet

I'm thinking about using the Ethernet port, a long cable (75-100 feet), and my laptop to do some remote shooting of some of the more dangerous and elusive wildlife from a closer distance with my 16-35 or 24-70 for a different (and safer) perspective of the alligators and other critters I like to shoot. Has anyone used the 1D X like this? If so, how well does it work?

Philosophical question about Sigma Lenses - Why?

Just out of curiosity thanks to a conversation in Marketing 101 - why would a company like Sigma create products for other brands, specifically lenses for Canon? I'm curious about the thought process that went into a decision by such a company to create accessories and devices for someone else's products since they already have their own line of camera bodies...

I'm done part III - Until Canon comes out with the following

All, after my recent purchase of the 1D X, I realized that I really am done buying gear (or at least big ticket items) for now. Since I had fun with my two previous threads on the topic, I'm done - I have all the lenses I need and I'm done part II - here are all of the lenses I've sold, I thought I'd post another one, and one appropriate for Canon Rumors.

I really have been fortunate to get side jobs (photo related and otherwise) to be able to afford my gear but I really do have all I need for my purposes. Anything else I need can be rented as it would not see enough use to justify holding onto it.

That said, if Canon releases any of the following rumored or imaginary items, arranged in no particular order, I'd be in the pre-order line:

Lenses
1. 16-35 f/2.8 III (with improved IQ)
2. 14-24 f/2.8 or f/4 IS
3. 12-24 f/4 (I loved the 12mm FOV with my Sigma)
4. 12mm f/4 (rectilinear prime)
5. 135 f/2 IS (IS would rock!)
6. 180 f/2.8 macro (f/2.8 and more aperture blades for better bokeh)
7. 400 f/5.6 IS (IS would really rock with this lens!)

Bodies
1. 7D II with near-full frame IQ and still 8FPS or better (would love built-in GPS as well)
2. 5D IV with 36+ MP
3. 6D II in an even smaller package - i.e. full frame version of the SL1
4. M3 with the 70D sensor
