Ever such Rumours as APS-C, Low Density, Low MP sensors?...

Has it ever been rumored for their to be prototypes in testing of what would essentially be a physical 1.6x crop of a FF sensor, allowing the ISO capabilities of the 6D/5D3 in, say, an EOS M or xxD body?

I'd love me an EOS M with 6-9 megapixels of low light goodness!

Thoughts?

Would this be stupid-expensive to develop? I can imagine the right advertising campaign could sell the concept of fewer pixels for low light, arty, shallow DoF shooting with the 22mm f/2 with results that're still 2-4x larger than necessary for Facebook ;)

Strange AFMA results with canon 50 f1.4

Ok this ones strange.
Just been adjusting the AFMA for my canon 50 f1.4 on my 5D III.
I've found that I have to set it to around +15 when aperture is wider than f4 and particularly when shooting at medium to far distances. But if aperture is f4 or narrower and particularly when subject is at close distances it's best left at around +5.

Anyone experienced similar?

All my other lenses AFMA settings are unaffected by aperture changes.

Lenses sharper on FF

Hi CR folks,

I've found that my lenses are sharper on FF as compared to APS-C cameras ... This is particularly true for the 100-400L and the 50 f/1.4. Is it because the FF is more forgiving and the higher pixel density of the APS-C highlights the problems of the lenses more? Just curious ...

Cheers and a happy weekend ... J.R.

Canon FL 50mm 1.8 on Sony A7R Results (1964-1971)

One of the most exciting things about a camera that has a short focal flange distance is that nearly any 35mm lens ever made will work. I decided to start out by trying my Canon FL, Canon FD and Nikon Kogaku lenses first, and my first results with my Canon FL 50mm 1.8 was astounding at this medium format resolution range. Note all the images below are unsharpened RAW.

Take a look:

Take a look at the 100% crop of the bridge detail:

There's a bit of flare here on the originals that you may not find on modern lenses, however my real interest in these lenses will be black and white street photography, not landscape. Just wanted to test these on something of such extreme detail before my street photography photography meetup tomorrow in San Francisco's Chinatown.

Huge win on sharpness and corner detail, completely shocked me even on playback of image on the camera, but even more so on a 27" Thunderbolt. Will post back here with images from the Streets of Chinatown in B&W (http://www.meetup.com/Landscape-Photography-SF/events/167445242/) tomorrow sometime.

Nikon and Quality Control issues again

Over at nikonrumors, and a few other forums, report problems with water leakage in Nikon 1 AW 1 (underwater mirrorless camera), which was launched on September 19, 2013.

According to one of the customers, digitalrev has cancelled his order of Nikon 1 AW 1 saying that the 1AW1 has been "discontinued by the manufacturer".

Some say it is true, some say it is not true, but the fact remains that it has been in "Back ordered" status with almost all of the biggest authorized sellers (e.g. B&H, Adorama, Amazon etc) for a very long time.

Considering the QC issues Nikon has had, with their SB 900 speedlite & D600 camera, maybe they are trying to nip this in the bud as quietly as they can. Sad really to see a top camera manufacturer losing their reputation like this, due to avoidable mistakes.

Grand Canyon, North or South Rim?

I'm not sure if I should post in this section. Here's my question and request. I've been to South Rim before and am considering the North Rim this year, but it seems that there are not many facilities available. For people who have been to both, is the north side worth it? Which side in your opinion is more beautiful? Could you show your best Grand Canyon shots, North and/or South? Many thanks.

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art for Canon Coming in April? [CR1]

We’ve been told by two people that the goal at Sigma is to have the new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art series lens to retailers around mid to late April of 2014. No official release date has been given to any of Sigma’s distributors as of yet.

Official pricing is expected in late March/early April along with a followup announcement with specifications, sample images and some additional marketing.

At this time the April goal is just that, a goal. There’s always a risk that ample production won’t be ready by then.

One piece of good news is that the Canon mount version of this lens will be the first to be released (along with the Sigma mount I imagine).

EOS 7D Mark II Coming in March? [CR1]

<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=15918"></g:plusone>

We’ve had a couple of communications saying that Canon will announce the replacement to the EOS 7D some time in late March. We’ve had nothing from the usual sources as of yet, and it’s tough to tell whether or not it’s reported rumors fuelling speculation, or the speculation fuelling the reported rumors. It’s the usual chicken and the egg thing.

There hasn’t been much information about specifications for such a camera, and I’m sure Canon will have a massive marketing campaign behind it. If we don’t hear something a bit more concrete soon, I wouldn’t put much stock in the March announcement speculation.

Yesterday we were shown that Canon plans to update the Pixma Pro printers in the near future, those generally get announced with a DSLR, so that’s a positive sign in the right direction.

More to come…

A 500mm f/5.6?

I recently got my Tamron 150-600mm and I'm loving it. Tamron has shown that it is possible to build a pretty decent 150-600mm f/6.3 zoom at an affordable price. This has some interesting implications.

It is often thought that with long and fast lenses, the amount of glass needed is a big factor in the price hike. If I am correct, a 600mm f/6.3 must have a front element with a diameter of at least 95.24mm. The Tamron is just about there, with a 95mm filter thread. This could explain how sharpness grows considerably when stopping down to f/8, as if the size of the front element was barely enough to achieve the FL/aperture combination desired.

I would like to share an observation. A 500mm f/5.6 would have a front element with a diameter of at least 89.28mm. This makes the use of a 95mm filter thread much more advantageous. In other words, it should be possible to build a 500/5.6 with more or less the same glass as for a 600/6.3 - thus around the same price. If you consider that building a shorter prime should be easier than building a longer zoom, a 500/5.6 at around 1100 EUR/USD is both technically feasible and promising IQ-wise. The Big Ron (or Tamrosaurus, or Tankron) gets really sharp at f/8; trading 100mm of focal length for a full stop of light (without losing IQ) could be worthwhile in many situations. For reference, the Canon 400/5.6 L takes 77mm filters having a front element of at least 71.43mm and the IQ is still good although it's an old lens.

Thoughts?

Chinese Chat forum mentions 4K Canon...

As seen over at NR
"There appears to be more chat on the Chinese Xitek forum about a camera from Canon that will do 4k and pushing 40MP, but once again, no details. Of course, I'm subjected to the vagaries of Google translate for this, so who knows what it could really be about..."

I want to try a Sony. What to rent? RX1r, A7, or A7r?

Hello everyone,

I have always shot Canon and love my 6D, but I would love to try one of the Sony FF cameras.

I'm booking a trip to Walt Disney World right now, and it's one of my favorite places to shoot. I rent from LensRentals a lot, and was deciding what to rent.

Options I'm considering are the:
 • Sony RX1r
 • Sony A7r
 • Sony A7

Lenses I was thinking of renting are:
 • Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 ZA
 • Zeiss 24-70mm f/4 ZA

Normally I'm completely happy shooting in the Disney parks with just my 6D, 35mm, and 70-200mm. As such, I'm thinking the RX1r may be the best fit with it's fast 35mm. However, I worry that I'll miss having a viewfinder, and that the newer A7's may have a more evolved UI.

So Sony using guys, what would you recommend?

Thanks!

70-300mm F/4-5.6L IS or 70-200mm F2.8 VC?

Hello, straight to the point, having a 6D, wondering which telephoto to get now. Would the 70-300mm's extra reach matter a lot, or 70-200mm's larger aperture matter more? How does it compare in real life? How does the speed compare and real life issues? Is the difference in aperture going to matter in normal daily life usage? Thanks everyone!

P.S. please don't send me the link to Dustin's review. I've read it so much I think I can memorize it backwards. =/

what lens's to bring to Hawaii?

Hi all,
So in a few months I will be on the big island in Hawaii for about a week and I am having a little trouble deciding what lens's to bring. I plan on bringing the 5d mark 3 and a couple of the following, 24-70 2.8 II, 17-40 f4, 70-200 2.8 IS II, 100mm 2.8 macro, 50mm 1.4, and 85mm 1.8. I was thinking that the 17-40 and 24-70 would be the best combo, but wondering if I will miss the 70-200 and if it will be worth the size/weight. I plan on taking scenic images while hiking and just around town in Kona, as well as shot at the beach/sunsets.. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks
