Canon 24-70 II + 70-200 f2.8 IS II is one GREAT combo

Last Jan, I got a chance to be a primary photographer to shoot Tet celebration http://www.tetvietnamsj.com/ at Saint Columban Church. It’s a small private catholic school.

Long story short, the Vietnamese parents did an outstanding job organizing the Tet celebration. They got strong supports from school principle and all the teachers.

As always, I brought all the gear I have including the 400mm f2.8 IS II to the event. I took about 700ish photos.
1. 85% of the photos taken with 24-70 II + 70-200 f2.8 IS II combo
2. 15% taken with 50L + 135L combo

Shooting with 2 bodies including 24-70 II + 70-200 f2.8 IS II combo is so much easy. Missing shots is almost impossible. I’m glad I pulled trigger on second 5D III.

Here is the link of Tet celebration: http://albums.phanfare.com/isolated/qT0bsDqk/1/6425720#imageID=208599092 These are just preparation photos. There are so much more photos that I wish I can share with CR community – kids getting red envelop, dragon dances etc…but I must respect the parents & students privacy.

Bottom line is: 24-70 II + 70-200 f2.8 IS II is one GREAT combo

Is Manfrotto Q5 Arca Swiss compatible?

I'm in the process of updating/upgrading/simplifying from an unwieldy mix of 3 different Manfrotto plate systems. Clearly ArcaSwiss is the way to go. I like most of the higher grade Manfrotto ball heads, but finding it hard to get information as to what the Manfrotto Q5 system actually is. Usually 10 minutes on Google will answer anything.

http://www.manfrotto.com/054-magnesium-ball-head-with-q5-quick-release appears to suit my needs.

It looks right, but is the Q5 100% Arca Swiss compatible?

Picked up a new 24mm f1.4L II today

The price at the local camera store was too tempting, and I'd been hanging out for 6 months to get one. The other "trigger" point was I'll be in NY in a few weeks, and my current lens collection jumped from 15mm to 40mm or so. This one slots in nicely :)

Playing with it last night, the short DOF is wonderful, particularly for a wide angle lens. It certainly is a solid little lump of a lens ;)

f2.8 16-35mmL vs. f4 17-40mmL

Hey all,

Was looking for some insight on the aforementioned (in the subject) wide angle lenses. I shoot on a 5D Mark III, and am wondering if the f2.8 16-35mm is considerably sharper on the edges compared to the f4 17-40mm. I would be using the lens for primarily outdoor landscape use, but definitely would be used diversely. Any comparison of the two is appreciated.

Cheers!

AF problems with 70D and fast lenses

http://www.traumflieger.de/reports/Kamera-Tests/Canon-EOS-DSLR/EOS-70D/EOS-70D-Autofokus-Problem-Stellungnahme::617.html?XTCsid=a30801259ebc5a51cdc541a02e838980

not the best source, i know :)

but i have read a lot about it on german forums.
this video maybe is interesting for some 70D users.

the 70D in the video clearly has a AF problem using the center AF point with the 24mm f1.4.
i have heard about similiar problems with f1.8 and even f2.8 lenses and the center AF point.

Hard choice the 50 1.4 or 85 1.8

I've saved up enough for my next purchase, which will be a fast prime. I'm leaning towards the 50 1.4 which I used to have two years ago when I still had my 7D.

However, as I now shoot full frame, I am wondering if I should go for the 85 1.8, as it gives about the same view as my 50 did on the 7D.

As I'm buying second hand, I cannot really go and try the different focal lengths. I know both lenses are really good, the 85 is even said to be the sharpest lens canon makes.

Is the 85 as fast in focusing as the 50? will I like the view I'm used to better? or should I go with the 50 I loved so much?

(and yes, I already have the shorty forty)

Canon DSLR Announcement in March? [CR1]

HTML:
<div name="googleone_share_1" style="position:relative;z-index:5;float: right; /*margin: 70px 0 0 0;*/ top:70px; right:120px; width:0;"><g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/02/canon-dslr-announcement-in-march-cr1/"></g:plusone></div><div style="float: right; margin:0 0 70px 70px;"><a href="https://twitter.com/share" class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" data-url="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/02/canon-dslr-announcement-in-march-cr1/">Tweet</a></div>
<p>With Nikon officially announcing the D4S next week, we’re starting to see the usually unreliable mentions of Canon following suit with an announcement of their own. The latest being that Canon will announce a high end full frame DSLR some time in March.</p>
<p>We do not believe a camera above or replacing the EOS-1D X is on the immediate horizon, as we’ve seen a few small marketing campaigns for Canon’s flagship camera. Along with a <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/01/eos-1d-x-firmware-version-2-0-3-released/" target="_blank">feature adding firmware update</a> that came out in January.</p>
<p>We’ve been told by a great source that <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/01/the-next-dslr-will-be-entry-level-cr3/" target="_blank">Canon would announce 3 DSLRs in 2014</a>. The first being the entry level DSLR that was announced last week. The replacement to the EOS 7D Mark II and a third camera that is currently unknown. There is always a chance of adding to the number of cameras in the way of a “development” announcement, but those are always hard to predict.</p>
<p>As always, whenever Nikon does something, there’s always an upturn of Canon speculation.</p>
<p>NAB is coming in April, so I would think Cinema EOS would get an announcement before the EOS line.</p>
<p>More to come.</p>

Full Frame Vs Crop Sensor

Hi everybody :)

So as I move into my 3rd year of photography, I find my 500D isn't able to help my take my photography to the next level and its beginning to feel like my L series lenses are begging to shoot on a full frame body.

I've never had the chance to shoot full frame so most of what I know is pure theory derived from reading reviews etc online.

With South Africa's economy in a bit of trouble, I can get a hardly used 5D mkii for a reasonable price so I'm considering taking that.

Just what can I expect in terms of image quality and noise performance? Is the IQ of a full frame substantially better than a crops? Will I be able to take relatively noise free images at say ISO 3200?

The reviews seem to indicate that the native system for L series glass is full frame. Does this mean that I will experience a dramatic improvement in IQ?

The more I read, it seems that crop bodies have a singular advantage over full frame and that is the increase in focal length.

Can you guys chip in and throw some opinions and facts my way please?

Thanks in advance everybody.

New Foveon Sensor Patent by Sigma

Hi, just stumbled upon this.

What is the Canon equivalent to it in this field?

Looking forward to the late 2014 DSLR announcement(s) at least sensor tech wise. No need for a new cam. 5D3 is still great and kicking ;-)

The 2013 New Orleans Bridal Crawl Video

Hello all,

I've just posted to YouTube the first video to come out for this charity event I shot last Sept here in New Orleans.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOIlThG5ww0

The charity was for Cafe Reconcile, which helps inner city kids learn about the food service business, which is a big deal here in NOLA...from being a chef to business mgmt, etc.

The video here, is my first ever attempt to do a video for anyone external to just me goofing off in my kitchen doing my CWI (Cooking While Intoxicated) cooking videos.

I've created a simple montage to try to show the fun for the day.

We start the day off at Muriel's a restaurant in the Quarter, and attempt to set the Guinness World records for most people (men or women, this is New Orleans after all) in full bridal costume. We had officials and every thing.
Unfortunately, rain hit and we lost all last minute walkins, and we didn't come close, but it was a fun day, and we're thinking this is a dry run for this coming year.

After the record attempt, it turned into a pub crawl all over the Quarter into the Warehouse dist.

I shot this with my Canon 5D3. I rented a 50mm f/1.2, which helped a LOT for many of the scenes, which were in very dark bars. That one scene inside Gordon Birsch is at f/1.2, it essentially turned night into day in there where the Asian guy in the right is photobombing me..

I ended up using my Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 a lot too...

I brought the 17-40mm f/4, but it didn't get used nearly as much as the other two lenses. I'm going to buy that 50mm f/1.2 this year.

Everything was shot pretty much using my manfrotto mono pod with video head....it even doubled at times for a steadi-cam for moving shots.

I shot everything flat using the Marvels Cine style, and I graded in Davinci Resolve 10. I bought the Neat video noise plug in for Resolve and used that to clean up noise.

I edited in Final Cut Pro X, 10.0.9 I believe...the one before you had to have Mavericks.

The beginning logo fly in, and the ending credits were my first every try to work with Adobe After Effects, and wow, I'm blow away by what that can do...will be learning that intensely going forward.

Anyway, this is a first semi-pro effort I've ever made. I can see warts in this, but the client is extremely happy, and it has been very much a learning experience. I NOW know how to do a round trip with Resolve and FCPX...although my next project I may try to learn Premier too.
:)

Anyway, here it is, please give me your thoughts and your constructive criticisms. I really appreciate the comments by the crew here on CR.

New EF-S 24mm & USM Motor Coming? [CR1]

<p>We’re told to expect a new EF-S 24mm STM prime lens to arrive some time in the summer. The EF-S lineup is due for a shot in the arm, especially with the expected arrival of the EOS 7D Mark II.</p>
<p>We’re also told that a new USM motor will also be introduced some time this year, and it will be called “C-USM”, which stands for Compact Ultrasonic Motor. This technology is likely to first appear in a new 50mm lens.</p>
<p>This info comes from a new source.</p>

Mystery body?

On the new video from The Camera Store reviewing the Fujifilm XT 1, at 3 minutes 45 seconds Nick Devlin shows the Fuji split screen; the image he shows on the screen is of a retro style Canon OES body with an OMD EM1 type SLR body and grip. What is this camera? Can it be a retro style SLR type mirrorless body on test from Canon? Is this an unintended leak? I am not familiar with all Canon bodies so might be wrong. Any ideas?

need help deciding:To canon or not to canon

Going nuts here with choosing a compact digital to replace current lumix lx3...and need some help with so many options available.

What I am looking for:
lens - prefer zoom at least 24mm to 100mm or so, f/2 or less, but 2.8 would do ( I like WA and UWA, but rather not to play with attachments). Compact with interchangeable or fixed lens is not much of an issue
movie format - not an item I care much, as seldom used
high iso with low noise - a plus, but would be happy with a solid 3200/6400
sensor- 12mb would be enough as long it as long it has good IQ
format - will shot mostly raw
viewfinder - can live with or without one, but swivel/tilt lcd would be just a plus
Manual focus - switch or one touch, meaning not too much fuss to get it
Macro - how close can one get without bumping into it? 2-3 inches? and easy UI, as not willing to go get the function deep into the UI menu
size - smaller than dslr
battery life - at least 300 shots (would be a camera to take out in camping trips, weekend trips - usb only charging is not doable for me)
flash - hot shoe a plus, but can have onboard
price range - don't mind to buy used or new as long as below 1K

What I have been looking at:
Sony: A6000; nexus nx-6 w/16-50mm
Panasonic: Lx7; GM1K w/12-32mm; ZS40
Fuji: XE2 w/16-50mm
Canon: G15; G16; G1x; G1Xmk2 - and even EOS M, but the upcoming M3? could be big factor due having already a good range of EF lenses

What I am thinking currently:
Canon as a preference due to familiar interface- really like the G series.
Sony has the big plus of having the metabones adapter, with renders EF lenses very useable, but bumps the cost quite a bit.
Panasonic has a familiar interface, but not that great iso/NR
Fuji is unknown to me

ultimately is my own decision, but I am really struggling with options, and finding one that hitsmost of what I need/want

Thanks for you input
Phil

Canon EOS 6D body deals

Hey all,

Im looking for deals to buy Canon 6D body. I've been following available deals here at CR for quite a while, which were from $1400-1600. Now my confusion is that there are many top rated ebay sellers offering the same new camera in the range $1550-1600. Is it worth considering those offers, while they are not posted here? or is it so that canonrumors only posts offers from the most trustworthy digital camera sellers?

I dont see any new deals and thinking to purchase the camera already from ebay.

Thanks!

Good Non-Sports Mix - 10-22 + 35 2.0 IS?

This should conclude my novice-like posts. I use the 100 2.0 and 200 2.8 (on my 70D) for sports and can't say enough about that combo (especially for indoors and might eventually get some sort of telephoto zoom for outdoors).
My 35 2.0 IS does most everything else and does it well, but I might like to broaden my horizons with something wider for landscapes. Would you say that the 10-22 would nicely complement a 35 (on a crop of course)? Also considering the 24 2.8 IS and am also considering nothing.
Thanks again for all of the shared knowledge and experience.

Need Help Choosing Lenses for Walt Disney World & Cruise..

Hi everyone.. I just wanted to get your advice on figuring out what are the best lenses for me to take for a trip on a Disney cruise followed by a trip to Walt Disney World.

Right now, I only have the following three lenses for a Canon 5D Mark III:
- 70-200 f2.8 II
- 24-105 f4
- 50 f1.4

Right now, my plan was to take all three lenses with me, but doing so would mean having to take a big backpack to fit the 70-200. I figure that even though the 70-200 is a heavy lens, it would still be reasonable to carry around on a cruise ship, whereas I can switchover to the 50 f1.4 as a walkaround lens while I'm at the parks, and maybe use the 24-105 where I need the extra zoom..

What I'm really debating right now is whether I should leave the 70-200 at home and just take the other two lenses, or take all three. I also have a 1 year old, and I always seem to get my best and sharpest shots with the 70-200.. so I'm hesistant on leaving it behind. I find that the 24-105 is somewhat limited unless you have perfect daylight, leaving me with the 50.. which is a great lens, but of course cannot provide you with reach when you need it.

So I wanted to get all your thoughts on this.. have any of you taken a 70-200 on board a cruise ship let alone to the parks? Is all that weight really worth the amazing shots I'm sure to get? Or should I leave it and just rely on the other lenses?

Thanks!!
