Tired and Frustrated of the Pocket Wizards

I have 4 tt5's 2 tt1's and 3 580's and 1 430ex plus I have 1 plus x 1 plus iii , 4 youngnou 560-II I'm just tired of dealing with the freaking pocket wizards, I have no problem with the plus x and plus iii, I use the youngnous for wedding venue lighting and fire the or intent to fire them with the tt5's but they just work once out of 10 shots if that and I end up using slave mode! I use the tt1's on camera with a 580ii on camera so that I fire my on camera flash plus the venue youngnous, but it's just frustrating that they are just not reliable at all.
I'm thinking of selling all of my tt5's and tt1's and 580's and just get 600's my question is, can I fire my on camera flash 600ex and my youngnous? with a plus x ? or do I need to attach another plus x/iii on camera?

Help Please!

New, Jobu Lens Foot just for 300/500 IS II

Jobu LF-C504M2 drops centerline of mass (is that correct term?) ~22.5mm on 500 II vs. Canon foot w/DLP-115. Plenty of clearance for reversed lens hood. As a carrying handle its fine, but not quite as long or comfortable as Canon. Plenty of knuckle clearance for my skinny XL hands, heavy gloves may be out. Canon 300 foot just under 22mm shorter than 500, so 300 will have little position change, in use. Foot has 1/4 and 3/8 threaded holes near center (no inserts).

Canon PowerShot G1 X II Thoughts from CP+

<p>Reviewed.com has their camera staff at CP+ in Tokyo and have taken some time to write a pretty extensive preview of the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1028804-REG/canon_9167b001_powershot_g1x_mark_ii.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">Canon PowerShot G1 X II</a>. On the surface, they appear very positive about the camera. Keep in mind, these thoughts are without actual real world image samples and usability tests.</p>
<p><strong>Some thoughts from reviewed.com</strong>

<em>“The retooled Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II is a clear shot at the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 II—a camera that currently enjoys an undisputed reign atop the pocket cam hierarchy. And in some key specs, the Canon is a superior offering. Its lens is both brighter and has more reach, and the sensor’s a lot bigger, too. All of that ought to translate to higher image quality, especially in low light.”</em></p>

Unscientific lens comparison (Otus vs. Canon EFs)

So I was asked by a friend of mine if I could do a simple test… and simple it was.
I took what EF lenses we had lying around and included the Otus in the collection.

The result is an unscientific test done on the 5D3.

The following lenses are in the "test":
Canon 70-200 2.8L II IS USM (@ 70mm)
Otus 55 1.4
Canon 24-70 2.8L II (@ 50mm)
Canon 24-105 4L (@ 50mm)
Canon 50mm 2.5L macro
Canon 24-70 2.8L I macro (@ 50mm)
Canon 85 1.2L
Canon 17-35 2.8L (@ 35mm)

Settings:
- Iso 200 ( 24-105 @ iso 400)
- 5600K
- 1/50s
- F 2.8 ( 24-105 @ 4)
- Light from window on the left. Small styro plate on the right which doesn't go all the way up, hence the dark top right corner on many of the shots.

Raw files with NO correction… I turned off sharpness and noise reduction completely in Adobe Camera Raw. I repeat… this is raw data.

Just got my hands on a 5D III for the weekend

This weekend should be exciting. We're heading to my daughter's dive meet and I've taken the plunge and borrowed a 5D3 for the weekend. Coming from a T1i, this camera is a little intimidating, but I do like the larger size - my hand actually fits on it without a battery grip. I know - it's the small things that amaze me. I had intentionally held off from working with a full frame due to the potential G.A.S. I know I would experience. With my new CPS membership - I couldn't resist trying one out for this event.

It's been great to compare the two cameras against each other. I live in a city that doesn't have a camera store anymore, and the other electronics stores pretty much are useless when it comes to higher end products, so this is a treat for me. I now have a better understanding of what I've been reading about on this forum. For the short time I've had with this camera, I've been amazed at how shallow the depth of field can be using my 85 1.8!

I was hoping to get the camera earlier to get more practice with it, but looks like I'll have to do some on-the-job-training as the meet starts tomorrow. It will take some getting used to, but I'm looking forward to seeing what this camera and my 70-200 can do :) I do have a 70-300 non-L; should I try this combination at all? Seems silly to take to zooms, but wondered if anyone here has used the 70-300 non L on this camera and what you thought.

Regards,

Wes

What's Next from Canon?

<p>The latest announcements from Canon aren’t exactly receiving a lot of positive feedback in my inbox. The G1 X with an EVF for $1000 seems to be irking a lot of people. For that price, the camera needs to be the absolute best in the segment, and I think that’s going to be a hard thing to achieve.</p>
<p>To a lot of people, the resources put into the G1 X II would have probably been better served by moving the EOS M into the mainstream. The M2 isn’t coming to North America, and I highly doubt a lot of G1 X II cameras are going to sell at the introduction price of $799. When the camera is $499, things will probably be different.</p>
<p>We’re told between March and August that Canon will start to announce products that make sense and will be popular.</p>
<p>The EOS 7D Mark II will finally be unveiled and should be in your eager hands by the fall of 2014. It will set a new benchmark in the APS-C segment.</p>
<p>A lot of new lenses are coming, the biggest being a replacement of the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS. We’re told that could be announced as early as March, but availability will not be immediate.</p>
<p>A third DSLR will be announced in 2014, though we’re not sure what that will be.</p>
<p>The Cinema EOS line will see a new camera or two for NAB in April, we’re told a lower cost 4K camera will be the star of the show.</p>
<p>There will also be another few PowerShot cameras announced sometime between now and May. Included in that will be the replacement to the SX50 IS.</p>
<p>Things haven’t been too exciting for Canon since the introduction of the very good EOS 6D, but even that started with a whimper. We’re told to expect a lot of exciting products throughout 2014 and that the Canon customer will be happy with the direction of the company.</p>
<p>More to come….</p>

SLR Magic Anamorphic Lens Adapter : Thoughts for use on 5D3 and EF Lenses?

I know it is almost released, but seems to be a lot of demos on this and it looks interesting.

The adapter is coming out for $899 and a set of 3x diopter lenses for it optional for $299 for close ups.

Website:
http://www.slrmagic.co.uk/slr-magic-anamorphot-133x-50-anamorphic-adapter.html

Links about it and demo videos:

PVC:
http://provideocoalition.com/awilt/story/entering-production-slr-magic-anamorphot-133-x50

This video demo from Eyepatch Entertainment, goes through showing how to set it up and use with a Blackmatic camera and is quite intriguing...a lot of trouble to set up, but the images, to me look VERY interesting.

Video Demo setting up SLR Magic lens:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFDKIatbjdM&feature=player_embedded

I'd really like to think about getting this lens, to play around with, but need to make sure it will work with the lenses I have, etc.

The site says this about the adapter:
The adapter has a 77mm front filter thread and a native 62mm rear thread with a 58mm, 52mm, 49mm adapter rings provided. As such it is only suitable for lenses which have a front element size of 50mm or less.

Does anyone know off hand what EF lenses this would work out with? I'll start researching but wondering if anyone knew off hand..

I currently have:

24-105L f/4 lens (kit)
17-40L f/4
70-200 f/2.8 II IS
85mm f/1.8
40mm f/2.8 pancake

I need to start looking up to see what size they are for filters, etc....

Has anyone else heard of this one? Is anyone else out there with a Canon, shooting anamorphic? There was another apparently nice recent release, the Letus lens...that comes in about $1700. This one appears to be a way to get into shooting anamorphic for a bit more reasonable cost.

Thoughts? Links?

Sony a6000 - A serious threat to Fuji's new X-T1 at half the price

Looks like there's gonna be some serious butt-kickin' mirrorless crop cameras to choose from in 2014!

As much as I am excited by the prospect of using Fuji's new xt1, excited enough to have pre-ordered one, this new Sony sports a higher res sensor, AF with more coverage and claims to be the fastest.
AND an impressive price tag! (half the price of the Fuji for body alone)

Now I've never paid much attention to Sony for still cameras, and from what I hear, they're still lacking a good lens selection, but bodies like this are going to attract photo enthusiasts' interest like Katy Perry in latex would attract oglers.
Add in-body stabilization to a feature set like the a6000 and we'll almost have it all.

www.sonyalpharumors.com/is-the-sony-a6000-superfast-hybrid-af-going-to-kill-the-slt-tech/

If Pentax is wondering what to build to replace the K-01, the Sony and Fuji would be a good foundation. But DO make the register distance short enough to adapt all other lenses; K-mount is too restrictive that way.

BIG Discounts on SUPER FAST CF Cards at B&H

Just got an email from Planet5D with the below message:

Some special pricing came in overnight – I believe these are good while supplies last – so don’t be waiting around as they may not last long!

The last one in the list is $250 off! And at 100mbps, it should be fast enough for Magic Lantern RAW video :)

Lee Filter Adapter Question

I will be going to Hawaii in August and thought that might be a great place to use a Lee Big Stopper. For a few moments last night, I thought Adorama had one in stock, but it turns out it was out of stock. Oh well, I ordered it and at least I'm now on the waiting list!

In the meantime, I would like to order the foundation kit and adapter rings. I think I can use a standard 67mm adapter for my 100mm L macro and 70-300L lenses.

But I have a question about my 24-105L: for proper use at 24mm, can I get by with the standard, or should I get the more expensive wide-angle version?

Also, any suggestions on other filters to take to Hawaii will be greatly appreciated. (I already have B+W CPLs in 67mm and 77mm.) It will be my first trip.

Thanks!

Vivid :)

Underwater Compact that shoots RAW?

Hello all,

I'm off to do some snorkeling soon, and was considering how I might take pics underwater. I've considered both a sealed-up housing for either my iPhone or my 5D3 and I didn't want to risk either. I've decided that I want to rent a waterproof compact camera instead.

LensRentals offers the Powershot D20, but as you can see, the shots it takes are okay but not so hot:
http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=%22powershot%20D20%22%20underwater

Given that these shots scream for post-processing (color cast, lack of contrast, etc.), I was wondering if any underwater compacts actually shoot in RAW.

Are you guys aware of any?

Need a new office printer, what do you guys have?

Not really Canon related, though it might be. The choices of small office/home printers is huge, I got my last one about 6 years ago and have been very happy with it, but it needs replacing and I was hoping some of you guys could point me in the right direction.

My old letter sized HP office printer is dying and I need a new one, prefer scanner, printer, copier, so an all in one, would like wireless printing as well. The HP has served me well but am not particularly brand loyal, of course overall running costs are a consideration, the vast majority of it will be regular B&W text printing, so photo printing is not a feature I need in this printer, but the occasional colour copy etc will be needed.

So does anybody have current recommendations?

I found a great deal on an ST-E2 and 420EX

I've had my 6D for a couple months now, and although I rarely break out the flash, I've found that when I do I prefer off-camera lighting. I took a little look around kijiji online classifieds and found the ST-E2 transmitter in another city. The guy also had a 420EX, both in great shape. Got them for $130, and it turned out he lived right near a cousin of mine who tested and bought it for me. It seems like the perfect 'budget' setup for off-camera flash. Was pretty excited to so easily find it at such a good price (the transmitter seems to go for $200-300 retail).

I did a simple test and both work very easily and automatically.

If you have any recommendations, warnings or tips for their use based on your experience, fire away! I've promised myself I am going to invest some time experimenting with more flash photography.

DxO & MTF Charts ... a little help please!

BACKGROUND:
I am not into lens/sensor scores or MTF chart readings etc ... I have nothing against it, in fact I envy those who can understand all the math/science (that goes into the lens/senor scores/charts) and make their purchase decisions based on it ... but I generally do not have patience/skill to go into scores and charts ... I buy lenses based on the reviews from a few sources that I trust (including several members in CR) ... sometimes, I buy camera gear based on how comfortable I am with it ... but generally, I feel that most modern camera gear is more capable then my skills as a photographer.

WHAT I WANT TO LEARN & UNDERSTAND:
I would like to learn & understand how someone gives a score to a particular lens or sensor. In this case I chose DxO because, over the past few years, I've read several discussions about DxO (prior to that I was not even aware such a company exists) and it got me interested in wanting to learn a bit more. Generally discussions related to DxO seem to invite war, blood bath and then end up with personal insults (I am also equally to blame for some of those discussions). So, I'd like to request your assistance to help me (and anyone else who is interested) understand DxO scores in "layman's" terms ... but please, I beg you not to turn this into DxO worshiping / hating contest. Also, please refrain from using this topic to poke fun or insult or score a point over fellow member ... we come here because of our passion for photography, so we are basically like minded citizens ... so please help me (and others) learn.

NOW THE QUESTION:
I was looking at some lens comparison scores over at DxO today (a screen shot of which I've posted below). According to this a $3000 dollar lens seems to have better sharpness than a $12000 lens. I do understand that a lens is not just about sharpness but also about various factors such as how well it auto focuses ... but for now I just want to understand only the sharpness part of the scores. From my understanding, the scores suggest that the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 is sharper than the EF 200-400 L IS (without using 1.4 TC), when both have them are tested at f/4 ... is that correct?
... also, is there an explanation to DxO scores? as in how they have arrived at that score?
... and if there is no explanation (for how they allotted those scores), how does one know if they are accurate?
Appreciate if you can assist in helping me understand in simple terms without jargon ... and once again, no blood bath please.

Thanks in advance

Something you might not see every day

how about people post some pictures of things they think are uncommon or unique to their area or hard to capture?

from my neck of the woods here's a big Sikorsky at work and the ever popular fighting eagle trifecta. eagles arent really hard to find you just have to go to the dump or the fish fertilizer place, but they dont usually get this worked up or let you get this close, and maybe some people here don't get to see them as much as i do?

Sony FE 70-200 f/4 G OSS lens

Just read, at Sonayalpharumors, that the FE 70-200 f/4 G OSS lens is now available for pre-order for US$ 1498 and it'll be available from 20th April 2014
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1029862-REG/sony_sel70200g_70_200mm_f_4_5_6_g_lens.html
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-70-200mm-Interchangeable-Alpha-Cameras/dp/B00I8BICEO/
http://store.sony.com/fe-70-200mm-f4-g-oss-zid27-SEL70200G/cat-27-catid-All-Alpha-NEX-Lenses?_t=pfm%3Dsearch
I am not so sure about this lens ... I mean the a7 & a7R are meant to be compact and IMHO that is their biggest strength over a DSLR ... but having this lens which weighs 840gms on a a7 or a7R kinda defeats that purpose ... I'd rather use my EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II if I have to (even though its heavier) ... coz if I can carry 840gms, going up to 1490 gms is not that big a deal, especially if I am able to let in twice the amount of light with the f/2.8 lens.
What do you guys think about this lens?

Photographic holidays

Hi there,

I am hoping to get over to canada next year and I want to do some wildlife photography. I am hoping to get some tips on places to visit or companies to use. My current plan is to start in Vancouver visit a few areas like lake Louise then fly over to the east coast and visit some of the east coast.

At the moment I am quite open to different ideas although I would like to see some snow so I don't want to be visiting in midsummer.

Cheers

Synkka
