So much redundancy...

So I have officially gone nuts between the 85mm and the 200mm focal range. I have the 24-105 which in no way shape or form is a true portrait lens... but there is overlap between 85 and 105. Then I have a very nice 85mm f/1.8 that I'm quite fond of. I sold my 100mm f/2.8L when I bought my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS mkii... and I missed the minimum focusing distance, and the incredible sharpness that I bought the 100L back... at slightly less than I sold it for... so that's a plus. Then yesterday I bought a 135L for around $650ish. And I have the aformentioned 70-200mm.

I have to start getting rid or somethings or my family will start to call the hoarders tv show. I know the 85mm has to go... and I know the 70-200mm isn't going anywhere....

But that leaves the 100L and the 135L which feel like they are so close in focal length that they are practically the same lens.

The 24-105 might get upgraded... but I don't spend a ton of time in the wide angle... so having the best lens for that doesn't intrigue me much.

I'd like the new 50mm sigma art lens that is coming out soon... so I would have my two zooms and a 50mm, a 100mm, and a 135mm. It still seems redundant. I just bought back the 100... I don't want to sell it again and I literally just bought the 135... so it is crazy to buy something and then sell it a month later without really experiencing what it can do.

Is there gear head valium?

question about 600mm lenses

i talked for 2 hours with a friend on the phone today.
he asked me if i know someone who could be interested in his EF 100-400mm.
he bought the tamron 150-600mm and has no use for the canon 100-400mm anymore.

he told me up to 400mm the tamron is as good as the canon.
above that the resolution drops but it´s still good.
he said that he thinks for noticable better image quality there is no way then buying the EF 600mm f4.
a 400mm f2.8 +TC would not yield noticable better image quality. can´t say if that´s true (he is not a pixelpeeper looking at his images at 200% all the time).

anyway... that made me think.

when tamron is able to produce a 150-600mm zoom for around 1100 euro.... then why is no company making a really good 600mm f5.6 for lets say 2000 euro?

a fixed focal length should be cheaper to produce then a zoom right?
ok for f5.6 you need a bit more glas.... but then 2000 euro would be twice the price.

if i would buy the tamron i would buy it for the 500-600mm focal range.
that´s where i would use that lens 95% of the time.
what i really need is a supertelephoto lens with great quality at the long end.

the tamron offers good quality at 600mm.
but why is nobody making a fixed 600mm f5.6 for 2000 euro that has excellent quality?

it should be possible from production cost and profit viewpoint... not?

Advice: Should I sell my 24-70mm f2.8L (I) and get the 24-70mm f4L IS?

I have read that the 24-70mm f4L IS has less distortion than the old 24-70mm f2.8L, in addition to the Image stabilization and lighter weight so I am considering to get the IS version. I don't shoot much portrait and fast pace events so, I think the 4-stop IS may help me more on low light situations. I am just a hobbyiest, not a pro?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

200x zoom on SX50

Don Haines's comments have inspired me to test the SX50 at 200x zoom - 50x optical plus 4x digital. I am on a brief trip to Jerusalem and, as usual, slung my SX50 into my case. Today had beautiful light. Here are some shots, ranging from 24-4800mm. The quality of the digital zoom really surprised me. All the shots were taken as jpegs, with no processing - straight out of the camera. To start with, the Church of the Dormition: 24; 200; 1200; and 4800mm equivalents.

Arches National Park -- at night

I arrived in Moab last night. I noticed the clouds had blown away, so I went out for a little hike to Delicate Arch. Just my luck, the clouds came back, and didn't start clearing up until I was almost done with my hike.
Afterwards, I went up to the arch viewpoint where I saw the stars. I thought I could try a short star trail photo using my telephoto lens, but it was really quite windy there and the trails were pretty ragged. One thing is for sure though, when the stars were out, you could see all of them! I wish I could find a place back home without all the light pollution.

For the record, with long exposures in the moonlight, some of these you'd never know it was shot in the middle of the night. Also, you always hear about the great light at sunrise/sunset. I've never once heard how great the light is at moonset, it's my new favorite time (although it may only be effective away from light polluted areas).

Here is what Earth looks like from Mars

Many of you might have already see this image ... if you haven't then here it is ... and one of the many articles that was published in almost every newspaper on the planet:

Nasa's Curiosity rover has taken a photograph of Earth from the surface of Mars, showing what our planet looks like from 100 million miles away.

It's rare that a single dot on a computer screen can elicit such a strong reaction, but there is something mind-blowing about Earth's diminutive appearance in the image.
While we are used to seeing vivid greens and blues and swirling cloud when the Earth is photographed from space, from this distance the planet and its moon appear like no more than a couple of bright 'evening stars'.

The picture was posted on the official Twitter account for Curiosity, which Nasa has taken to anthropomorphising, with the rover tweeting on Thursday: "Look Back in Wonder... My 1st picture of Earth from the surface of Mars."

Taken about 80 minutes after Mars' sunset on Curiosity's 529th Martian day using its 'left eye camera', the image was 'processed to remove effects of cosmic rays', with Nasa releasing a second image blowing up the smudge to make Earth and the Moon clearly visible.

"A human observer with normal vision, if standing on Mars, could easily see Earth and the moon as two distinct, bright evening stars," a Nasa spokesperson said.

I love Shallow DOF of Sigma 50 mm. F/ 1.4 DG. EX., HSM

Dear Friends.
2 years ago, When I need to get 50 MM Prime Lens and Fast Lens, I must need to make decision Between My Love EF Canon Lens or Sigma Lens (which have Bigger Glass and $ 50 US Dollars More Than Canon EF 50 mm. F/ 1.4.)
Well, That was the time , before I join CR. Club. But I read many Lens reviews Web Site for Sharper Photos of Sigma Lens, But some of Sigma Lens have some problem of CANON AF. At that time, I made my decision to buy Sigma, Because of For 50 mm. Lens, I can use Manual Focus to solve the AF. Problem of Sigma Lens too.
Yes, After 2 years of use, I still enjoy of this Great Lens, special the Shallow DOF between 1.8 and 1.4------NO, Not GREAT AS my dear Canon EF 85 mm. F/ 1.2 L MK II which cost 5+ times more.
Enjoy.
Surapon.

PS. Sorry, I do not have the beautiful Lady as the Model, I just have Old Basketball Only----Ha, Ha, Ha.

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 6, 2014 – On February 2nd imaging professionals from across the country gathered in New Jersey to cover the big game between teams from Seattle and Denver. Prepared to battle the potential elements, these professionals provided football fans with images documenting monumental moments and plays that can be watched, enjoyed and relived for years to come.

What to Expect From Canon For CP+ Next Week

HTML:

<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/02/what-to-expect-from-canon-for-cp-next-week/"></g:plusone>

Below is what we’re likely to see Canon announce next week for CP+ in Tokyo, Japan. Canon generally treats this show as a consumer show, so we won’t see anything on the prosumer DSLR side.

New DSLR, most likely a Rebel below the EOS SL1.

Canon G1 X Replacement. This camera will be slimmer, it will lose the optical viewfinder and the lens is most likely 24-120 f/2-3.9. As I’ve said before, it will be a fair bit of money. I’d say around $700.

Canon PowerShot SX280 IS. A new compact large zoom compact.

We’ll also see a few other PowerShot cameras announced.

These announcements will come on Wednesday, February 12, 2014.

Panasonic Lumix GH4 ...

Well, well, well. How is Canon going to keep their video crowd happy now?

Personally, I foresee problems for our favourite camera company: they've already "alienated" the stills-only crowd with the insistence on more and more (crippled) video features, and now Panasonic has released a full-featured video-optimized DSLM camera that's surely going to draw videographers by the thousands.

And not to mention the mirrorless issue.

Lens Announcement Coming in February? [CR1]

We’re told at least one lens will be announced after the CP+ show, most likely the last week of February, or first week of March. It’s speculated by the source that a replacement for the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS will be unveiled. It was also mentioned that availability would not be “immediate”.

This is a first time source, please treat this information accordingly.

Why the DxO bashing?

In various threads around CR, I have noticed quite a few opinions that are not complimentary to the folks at DxO. The various individuals seem to take issue with DxO's methods and conclusions and generally disagree with pretty much everything they offer. Why? Is there some inherent fault with their methodology that would make their conclusions erroneous? (I am neither pro or con on this issue, but would just like some enlightenment.) Do you have any factual basis for disagreement? Comments?
