The Canon PowerShot G1 X successor should appear some time in the next 2 weeks. We have heard it will be announced at CP+, however another source has said it will be announced the following week on the 18th of February.

Canon considers this segment a “top of the line” product and it will probably be priced as such. You can expect a smaller and lighter body, a big boost in image quality (sensor size is unknown at this time), DIGIC 6, along with the expected GPS and WiFi features. Availability is said to be in late April/early May.

From Good to Great!

Ever see those posts about people complaining that they "have a bad copy" of a lens? Or have you bought a lens that everyone raves about but you are not quite as excited about your "copy"?

AFMA! I'm a believer! Adjust your body to your lens. You might be pleasantly surprised :) I knew that adjustment was available on my camera but adjusting it seemed more complicated than my mind could wrap around. A few days ago, I took the plunge and purchased Reikan's Focal and was shocked to find out my nifty fifty, which I am learning to love, was off by +16 on my 6D! All my lenses needed some adjustment (the 50mm needed the most).

You Pros already know this, but if you are anything like me, go through the AFMA exercise. I think Focal does an amazing job, it is fully automated, easy to use, but certainly not free. The good news is that there are several free options out there that are probably just as effective but maybe not as easy. Pick one, and do it. You might find a lens in your collection that you were happy with but are now happier with :D

5D Mk3 Grainy footage. Any ideas?

Hello everyone,

I have been shooting with the Mk3 for a few months now, but have recently started seeing some grain in my images. I'm not really sure if it is something on my end causing this, or if it is within the camera. The attached image is a screen grab from a clip I shot wide open at f4 (24-105mm L) with an ISO of 800. The footage gets incredibly grainy when I sharpen in post and I'm not sure why. Could it be that the sky is out of focus? Should I have shot it at a much smaller fstop to avoid this? Any help would be very much appreciated. I'm still pretty new to videography, but I feel I should be getting much cleaner images than I have been. Thanks!

Made by Highschoolers: Technology in Education

Hey folks,
if you have a few minutes, I'd really appreciate it if you'd check out this video a friend and I made. It's an entry for the White House Student Film festival, and features our concept of a future classroom. I helped direct and film the video, but my friend (http://nemroffpictur.es) did all the editing and CGI. Let me know what you think!

Stacked TC IIIs on 300/2.8 II Brief summary

We have been having discussions about stacking 1.4xTC III and 2xTC III on telephotos. I have done some testing using a 70D, and here are some brief conclusions, incorporating what others have already written and discovered.
1. Stacking requires a 12mm extension tube placed between the two TC III extenders.
2. The 2xTC III must be attached to the lens and the 1.4xTC to the camera.
3. The camera exif records only the effect of the 2xTC - the pair attached to a wide open f/2.8 records as f/5.6.
4. The 300/2.8 focusses manually at all the usual distances, and the same is reported for other telephotos.
What I found from the 70D today is:
5. AF works only at intermediate distances (approx 30-80m, give or take) and not closer or at infinity in both live view and phase detect. (The 5DIII also didn't AF).
6. IQ is quite good.

Here are two shots of Egyptian geese at about 20-30m. The stacked TCs required manual focus which I did through the viewfinder, rather quickly, resting the lens on the ledge of a hide. The full shots are reduced to 1200x800, the crops of the heads are 100%. The goose standing is done with just the 2xTC attached. The sitting goose with the 1.4x + 2x.

Both are wide open (f/5.6 with 2x, f/8 with 1.4x+2x), iso 640 and 1/3200 or 1/1000s.

HOLIDAY / VACATION IDEAS from a Photographers perspective

Hello CR Members,

I see that many CR members travel quite a bit for vacations/holidays/business trips etc ... so it would be nice to share some useful information that many of us members can benefit, from a photographers perspective. Especially for hobbyists (like some of us), it would be nice to have some handy info that we can refer to when we go on a holiday/vacation to a particular destination. I know there is "Regional" section, but I see that it does not specifically cater to holidays and Africa is also missing ... so maybe the Admin/Mods can make Holiday Ideas (or another title that is more appropriate) a sticky and it can be further divided into different continents etc. What do you think?

24-70/2.8 Canon or Tamron: Which did you choose and why?

I am so much on the fence between the Canon 24-70/2.8L II and the Tamron 24-70/2.8 VC. Would love to hear why you chose one over the other and if you are still happy with your decision. I am very aware of the physical differences between the two and the various test reports out there, but I am more interested in "how they feel and taste", if you know what I mean ... Comments?

My 24-70v2 a bit wonky?

All:
Before I send this off to the mothership... Do you 24-70 owners also see a LOT of curve to horizontal lines?

Lately my 24-70 2.8Lv2 has not seemed as sharp and looking at recent ocean horizons there is a lot of curvature seen before the Lightroom 5 correction kicks in or is invoked. I try to avoid getting too obsessed with sharpness at a pixel-peeping level, and I should open up a frame or two from the first months I had this lens. Other than some back focus (-4 correction) it was wonderful. Did I just get jaded and want more?

I am going to ask CPS for a loaner before this goes in and in the day overlap with both lenses here I will do some kind of res test on both. Funny joke is that are no brick walls here in my rural Hawaii area so it's hard to find the right flat big target in the natural world. Yeah, I know those of you living in the northern states on the mainland or Norway are rolling your eyes right now... sorry for complaining.

Anyway, I wonder if this took a knock and whacked something inside. Did a search on CR forums (fora?) and didn't find any other discussions of barrel/pincushion expectations. ...just seems more pronounced...

Lightning Triggers

I am not sure if this is the right spot for this post. Moderators please feel free to move it if it is not in the right spot.

I am wanting to get a trigger before the spring storm season and I need some advice. I am tired of putting 100s of clicks on my camera just to catch 2 or 3 daytime bolts.

Does anyone here use a lightning trigger? If so what brand do you have? Any tips for usage?

This is the one that I am looking at now:

http://www.lightningtrigger.com/ < the version IV.

Does anyone have this model?

Thanks,

Chris

Our First Robin of 2014

Its only January, but after clearing snow this morning, I noticed a robin sitting by the front of our house in a crabapple tree eating last years crabapples.

I grabbed my 5D MK III and put on my 100-400L and took a photo out my front window. When he did not fly, I went outside and managed to take a few shots before he flew. These are not cropped, and have minor adjustments in exposure.

We've had a foot of snow over the last two or three days, but the cold arctic air is moving in, clear skies and very cold!

What would you choose as your 2nd Camera Body after the 6D?

I upgraded from the Rebel XTi to the 6D about a year ago, primarily because I outgrew the XTi and needed a camera that could do more. A few months after upgrading, my XTi got wet and died during a trip to Iceland so I've been looking for a 2nd camera body for my wife.

A little about my shooting style, I mostly shoot landscapes, night photography and portraits (also macro but not as much). My wife and I travel a lot, so street photography (and low light) is also part of our shooting style. I do events every now and then, but it's not my focus and is usually done at the request of family/friends. I can't say I don't like shooting fast action (sports)/wildlife because I've never really tried (I'm sure if I did I would like doing that as well). If you're interested to see photos, click here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/97429425@N05/

A little about my gear, I have a 35L, 17-40L, 100L macro, and the 24-105L (which I'm going to sell to help pay for this new body). The 35L was the last lens I bought, and I realized I liked shooting with primes over zooms. My wife is the opposite, she likes the versatility of zooms.

Anyway, I'm down to 3 different cameras, the 70d, 5D Mark iii, or another 6d. Price is definitely a consideration, but I'd rather spend a little more (or a lot) to get the right camera. I've looked at enough spec reviews and sample photos to know the difference among all 3 cameras. My shooting style screams 6d (and the fact that I really love my current 6d), however my wife's shooting style is suited more for the 70d. She really wants the rotating screen, and I think the new touch screen focus system of the 70d is a major advantage. Also, she isn't into learning the technical side of photography as I am, so having a 70d that has a few advanced features but is simple to use is also a plus. I think the 7fps of the 70d would only get used every once in a great while. For me the 5diii is still under consideration (in that case, my wife would use my 6d), but it does cost an arm and a leg. I'm not going to get into the 5diii specs, but there are times when I'm shooting where I could benefit from some of the 5diii's capabilities.

That being said, I was interested in getting user opinions on real world shooting, not a spec comparison. Thanks ahead of time for your thoughts!

Question about Canon 300mm f/4 L IS

Hi All:

I've been lurking here for quite a while but this is my first post. I recently acquired a lightly used Canon 300mm f/4 L IS from Lens Authority (great folks there, by the way). It is my first "big glass". I'm using it on a 7D with the Canon 1.4X Extender III. So far, I'm loving this combo. It is an economical way to get 420mm f/5.6 L glass in a compact, light, easy-to-carry package.

The lens has a retractable attached hood, a great idea, but it leads to the one issue I have with the lens. I normally carry the camera on a Black Rapid strap so it hangs at my waist, lens pointed down. When the lens hood is extended, a quick twist locks it in place in the extended position. Twisting the hood back in the opposite direction unlocks the hood and allows it to be retracted to the stowed position. Problem is, no amount of twisting in either direction will lock the hood in the retracted position and when retracted, the hood is very loose. Consequently, when I am hiking and bushwhacking with the camera at my waist and the hood retracted, the hood "creeps" (sometimes "falls") out to the extended position. This is a nuisance.

Anybody that has this lens (or the similar 400mm L f/5.6) ... is the hood supposed to be lockable in the retracted position or does it simply "float" around loosely when retracted? If it is supposed to lock when retracted, I'll have to get mine fixed.

Thanks for your help and for all the great information I get from this forum.

Is There a Definitive "Best" Landscape Lens for Crop?

I was thinking of a full-frame lens for possible future compatability, but I don't have a full-frame camera now so maybe not. My almost everything lens is a 35 2.0 IS which is pretty perfect most of the time on my 70D (and a 100 and 200 prime for sports). For the ultimate landscape lens I was thinking of just keeping that and making it work despite an occasional limitation or maybe complementing it with a Canon 10-22 or 15-85.
Thanks for any thoughts.

Stars Above, Stars Below.

A shot along my driveway after a good snow. Took about 5 minutes but it was a gorgeous evening and the shot easily presented itself. I love how the mixed colours of light from the house and the Christmas lights cast upward on the trees.

Shot with 6D and Voigtlander 20mm at f/5.6, ISO 4000 and 6 seconds (lovin' this combo). Very minimal processing.

How would one go about....Macro wireless slave speedlites

How could I possibly, and I acknowledge that I may not be able to, build a wireless setup such as the example in the RRS banner below, yet on the cheap?Well, Cheap is relative and great Macro flash setups are never cheap unless you want them to be MacGuyver-esque! And I want wireless and very clean. I'm looking for under $1k

I would think my starting point would be a 600 and a pair of 270's plus hardware. Am I correct?

Thanks!

Canon EOS 7D Mark II in Q2? [CR1]

More talk that prototype versions of the EOS 7D replacement will be sent to the Olympic games in Sochi this month. For the moment, a lot of the functionality and features are still “up for grabs” on the new model. The current timeline for the camera is an announcement in Q2 of this year with a release in Q3. Perhaps the camera will be tested further in Brazil for the World Cup?

We expect to hear more during the Olympics, though any specs mentioned may still be omitted from the final consumer product.
