7D user - advice on my best option for a 'go to' lens?

Hi

I'd like some advice on which lens to get for my 7D.

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

I'm torn between these two because I don't know which one will suit my style more. I have been used to a 17-85mm f/4.0 kit lens and a 50mm f/1.8, both of which I'm selling. I'm concerned that the 24-105 is slower and will limit me with depth of field and low light shooting. And the 17-55 has less reach and may be less of a future investment as an EF-S. Here are a few details about my photography...

I think I'm quite lazy about the technical side of things, and like to keep gear as simple as possible. I don't mind small losses in quality or control for the sake of convenience (eg. staying with my 17-85mm lens for years before getting the 50mm). I like being zoomed in rather than zoomed out. Being wider than my 17mm shots has never seemed necessary to me. I like shooting in low light, and I like shooting with shallow depth of field. I think I will be sticking with my 7D for a while, and I will be getting the Canon EF 50mm - f/1.4 USM. Below are a couple of links to my stuff for reference.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Sell 16-35 II for 24-70 II/24TSE?

Just looking for some feedback on shuffling my lens stable/adding a lens. I've noticed I am rarely using 16mm on my 16-35 and often find myself wanting more reach, which lends itself well to the 24-70 II, yes? But for landscape, I COULD see myself wanting a bit wider. So... How realistic is it to expect to be able to use shift on the TS-E to get me a wider FOV, thus satisfying my desire for "there if I need it" wide ability?

Does anyone see a downside to selling my 16-35 II and picking up the 24-70 II and 24 TSE II? I currently have a nifty 50 and the 70-200 IS II as well. Likely swapping the 50 for whatever Canon cones out with soon(?) OR the 50 ART.

Camera focusing

I am currently using a 5d mark iii and I love it. I have AFMA all of my lenses. I use mostly the 24-70 2.8ii and the 70-200 2.8i and every once in a while the 85 1.2 ii. My issue is that when post processing my pictures the ones shot in landscape orientation look considerably better and are in focus better than the ones shot in portrait orientation. Is there something that could be causing this in the camera or is this most likely operator error? It wouldn't be a big deal if it was only occassionally but looking back at my past shoots the best pictures are always taken in landscape orientation. Thanks for all replies and insights.

Canon 400L 5.6

Just wondering if anyone has any experience using the 400mm 5.6L with a FF for bird shots. I currently have a 70-300L and use it with a 7d for birds. I have been pretty happy with this, but I would like to use my 5d3 for some bird shots and 300mm just doesn't cut it. Anybody use the 5d3/400 5.6L combo? It sounds like it is light enough to hand hold, so that is good. My main question is how big a deal the lack of IS really is. One of the bigger IS whites would be great, but not in the budget since I mainly do landscapes. I guess I am looking for a solid, value 400 and wonder if this is it or if I just should stick to what I have right now. Any thoughts or advice appreciated.

Canon 17-40mm & ND filter

I was wondering if anyone out there is using a Canon 17-40mm lens with a high (i.e. 10 stop) ND filter. I'm thinking of building a small set of 82mm ND filters (separate, not variable - probably a 4 and a 10 stop to start with) along with step rings so I can use it on all my glass.

I guess the question is two-fold:
Is anyone using strong ND filters with this lens and do you see any vignetting on the 17mm end?
Any ramifications to using an 82mm ND filter and step ring to put it on the 77mm thread of the 17-40 lens?

TIA for any info.

I finally get my new Canon gear this weekend

This is a useless post except to say I'm excited about finally heading across to the US from Canada and picking up the Canon 6D and lenses I ordered some weeks ago from BH and Adorama. Looking forward to getting back into full-frame and trying out the Voigtlander 20 especially, as well as the 50 2.5 macro. Some obscure lenses that I have a feeling will really perform well. The 40stm and 70-200/4is everyone already knows are great. I'll start shooting and posting soon!

Canon 7D - Vertical Banding Noise

Hi,

My 7D (bought in Oct 2010) had been taking sharp, clear photos until recently when it developed Vertical Banding Noise (I believe) - on all images and videos, regardless of ISO, etc. Strong vertical black lines become very pronounced when an image is cropped. See the sample below. Any ideas for causes or solutions?

Cheers!

Tom

Sigma 50 f/1.4 Art Lens Should be Amazing

<p>It turns out Sigma’s goal isn’t to top the Canon 50′s in performance, but to get as close as possible to the new king of resolution, <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1007599-REG/zeiss_2010_056_55mm_f_1_4_otus_lens.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">the $4000 Zeiss Otus 55 f/1.4</a>.</p>

<em>“But the most impressive information we gleaned? When discussing their goals of image quality and sharpness for the lens, Sigma mentioned they’re confident they’ll surpass competitive products from Canon and Nikon and are instead gunning for Zeiss’s new 55mm Otus lens. Sony A65 to Canon Move - What do you suggest/ recommend?

To save you some reading I put the full back story after my question.

I am interested in purchasing the 6D for it's low light dominance but I currently don't have the budget for one and still get a quality lens, Canon 24-70 L or Canon 24-105 L. I am currently working with $600 and would like to be comfortable with the new system by mid March.

-I can sell my Sony set up for close to $600-$700 to give me a total of $1200/$1300.
-Or I could keep the Sony gear since I am familiar with it (back up camera) and do more photography and web development between now an march to save up the money for one of these systems.

What do you suggest/ recommend?

I do not have a FF or Crop preference right now, funding limit, but I do know in the long run I want to shoot FF for the “genre’s” I mentioned above.

Canon EOS-1D $430 (used) - Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens - $760 (used) - total $1,190 plus tax

5D Mk 2 $1,590 (used) - Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens - $760 (used) – total $2,350 plus tax

6D $1,400 (new) - Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens - $760 (used) (Add $200 for kit) – total $2,160 plus tax

60D $540(used/new add $100) – Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS - $879.00 – total $1,419 plus tax

_________________

I currently shoot with a Sony A65 camera and want to make the move to Canon. I am still developing my craft as a photographer and have not selected a specific “genre” but I do know I would like to stay close to business portraits, fashion, products, and maybe some weddings (low-light ability for not being able to use flash is key) areas of photography. I like shooting with natural light but I do have a Canon EX550 (I know I have Sony but it was free so I use it manually with a converter). I also have a set of flashpoint studio strobes.

I’ve been asked today to be a second shooter for a wedding in March of this year, and I also have an upcoming wedding in August of this year. Again, I do not want to be a “wedding photographer” but I am willing to shoot it with art/ creativity, and making the bride and groom happy, in mind.

note – Again, I am a user and would like to get familiar with the new camera system as soon as possible but do not want to waste money so if saving up is your suggestion, I’ll rent a better lens for the Sony for the wedding in March and make the money before August to get the 6D for it’s low light capabilities and a quality L lens.

PowerShot G1 X Mark II Specs Emerge? [CR1]

Rumored specs for a replacement to the PowerShot G1 X have surfaced on the Xitek forums. The camera will “probably” be announced for CP+ next month in Tokyo. If true, it looks like Canon isn’t straying too far from the original G1 X. Pricing will probably be the biggest thing in this cameras success. It can’t be anywhere near the original $700 price tag.</p>
<ul>
<li>20.2MP 1.5″ CMOS sensor</li>
<li>3 inch LCD touch screen</li>
<li>Similar size and design to the G1 X</li>
<li>DIGIC 6</li>
<li>24-120mm f/2.8-5.8</li>
<li>New “real image” optical viewfinder.</li>

Hybrid Viewfinder Coming To Canon DSLRs? [CR1]

HTML:
<div name="googleone_share_1" style="position:relative;z-index:5;float: right; /*margin: 70px 0 0 0;*/ top:70px; right:120px; width:0;"><g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=15508"></g:plusone></div><div style="float: right; margin:0 0 70px 70px;"><a href="https://twitter.com/share" class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" data-url="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=15508">Tweet</a></div>
Another mention of a <a href="http://www.canonwatch.com/rumor-canon-eos-7d-replacement-cp-new-tidbits-rumored-eos-a1/" target="_blank">hybrid viewfinder coming to a “high end” Canon DSLR</a> is making the rounds.</p>
<p>Basically, the viewfinder is both electronic and optical. The electronic viewfinder would take over for video recording and the optical viewfinder would be used for stills.</p>
<p>I see this as a possibility in one of two cameras initially. Either a replacement to the EOS-1D C or in the EOS 7D Mark II (could be named something else). We’ve been told in the past that the EOS 7D replacement would receive a host of video features to help differentiate the camera from the EOS 70D and everyone else currently making a high end APS-C DSLR.</p>
<p>I think whatever replaces the EOS 7D will definitely have some new technology in it, just like the 7D did when it arrived on the scene 4.5 years ago.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

Canon outperforms Japanese peers in patents, again

To those who are worried that Canon has stopped being innovative;

Canon has ranked amongst the top 5 patent holders in the US for more than 25 years. In 2013 Canon ranked as No.3 over all, with a total of 3.825 patents, which is an all time high. Canon has been the highest ranked Japanese company for the last 9 years.

sigma 15-30

Has anyone tested this lens on full frame? (specifically 5d3)

I really want a super wide (something 16mm or wider) but I don't really want to spend to much as generally I only use superwide to exagerate perspective / fun creative shots rather than serious landscape or architecture.

I've seen a preowed copy of the 15-30 for £140 and wonder is it cheap because its rubbish?

Any opinions or sample shots would be really appreciated.

3.4GB of downloadable 1080p low-comp video from the 6D

Hey everyone,

Quite a few people were asking me to send them hi-res TIFFs and video files straight from the 6D shot on L and Zeiss lenses so they could see what the quality was really like.

Here's 5.6GB of TIFFs + Video, or 3.4GB of video-only. Download it all and check it out for yourself what the quality is like.

view & download here >> https://app.box.com/s/jmtxb6mvkmqfqo357z4q

Shot in Death Valley National Park, Grand Canyon, Big Sur, Yosemite and a few others.

Shot with the 6D and all L + Zeiss lenses.
