Carrying Handle To Attach To Tripod Collar / Foot?

Hi,

Rightly or wrongly when I'm out and about I tend to carry my camera + 300/2.8L via the tripod / collar foot (with it reversed so its at the top). This is fine for a while but as its basicaly a two figure grip offer a few hours can get a bit painful.

The other day I noticed that the Sigma 500mm f4.5 seems to have the solution to my pain by actually moulding a grip into an extended tripod plate:

My question is does anyone know if anyone makes a 3rd part add on like this that I can screw onto my existing collar?

Thanks in advance

70D vs 7D - preliminary review for bird photography

My 5DIII is out of action while being repaired and so I have reverted to my old 7D. I am one of those hiker/bird photographers who uses the 300mm f/2.8 II + 2xTC III combination at 600mm for its relative lightness. The 7D autofocusses quite quickly with most lenses in general under all conditions. It is a bit slow with the 300mm f/2.8 II + 2xTC III for well-defined targets and fails for diffuse ones and hunts badly. Out of frustration, I tested a 70D in a shop with the 300mm f/2.8 II + 2xTC III and it was fine. The 70D is reputed to be less noisy than the 7D and slightly sharper (DxO tests give the figures). So I bought one.

Here is a brief review.

1. Most importantly, despite being described as having the same AF system as the 7D, the 70D works very well with the 300mm f/2.8 II + 2xTC III combo and appears to have a more consistent and faster AF. So, the over-riding consideration for me is fulfilled.

2. I prefer the screen and toggle switch of the 7D as I use the camera as a digital telescope in the field for identifying birds. But, the swivel touch screen of the 70D does have advantages.

3. The 70D lacks the spot focus of the 7D - it just has the "open square" in the viewfinder.

4. The weather here has been atrocious so field trials have been difficult. My impressions are that the 70D is indeed sharper than 7D at the extremes of resolution.

As there are so many variables under field conditions, I conducted a test under controlled conditions. I took a very sharp close-up of a kingfisher with my 5DIII in the summer and had a large size print made. So, I used the print as a target. I used the 300mm f/2.8 II without the TC for testing as it is so sharp and will not be the limiting factor in resolution at the distances used indoors. The lens was AFMAd using FoCal on both bodies prior to use.

This target photo had been taken at iso 1250, 1/320s and f/5.6 at 600mm on the 5DIII.

Why can't there be IS/OS in all lenses?

I mean, they put it in their cheapest possible lens, the 18-55, which go for about 75 bucks in a kit. But they don't put it in various higher end lenses, like the 24-70/2.8 or 16-35. Sigma just announced a new 50 1.4 but with no OS. Why not? What am I missing? Why not make the price of a premium L lens like $1875 instead of a mere $1800 and add the IS?

(An aside, when I was with Pentax or Sony, I couldn't understand on the other hand why they didn't put hypersonic motors in all their new lenses. So many remained screw driven.)

Nikon makes development announcement for D4S

"As Nikon's new flagship model, the D4S will offer advances over the Nikon D4 digital SLR camera that include even better image quality enabled with adoption of a new image-processing engine, and more advanced autofocusing performance."

This doesn't sound like a new sensor is in the works, which I find very surprising. Maybe they aren't ready to tip their hand yet.

Traveling to Taiwan & Japan..do i need to declare Camera kit

Hi,

I am based out of India.
I bought a 5DM3 + lenses in May'13. I will be traveling to Japan & Taiwan for business purpose and planning to take my Camera kit with me.

What I am worried about is do I need to declare the Camera + lenses before boarding of flight for International travel ?
The Customs officers might think I have bought these in Japan/Taiwan on my return ?

<p><b>LAS VEGAS– Jan. 6, 2014</b> – Sigma Corporation of America, a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world’s most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, today announced the launch of two new Global Vision lenses from the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.</p>
<p>The improved and redesigned 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM and 50mm F1.4 DG HSM lenses are the latest additions to Sigma’s Global Vision lineup. Both lenses’ availability and pricing have yet to be announced.</p>
<p>“These two lenses are among our most popular, and we’re pleased to reintroduce these products by adding them to our Global Vision lineup,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “The 18-200mm, in particular, is an exciting new lens as it now has macro functionality, updated optics and a Global Vision design, making it a fantastic alternative to the kit lens. As has been the case with our recent Global Vision lenses, we expect an array of photographers to gravitate to their technically advanced features and slick new look.”</p>
<p>The <b>18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary</b> lens, designed specifically for APS-C DSLRs, is the successor to the 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM, which was launched in 2011. The smaller and lighter lens (15.2 ounces and 2.8×3.4 inches versus 17.3 ounces and 3×3.5 inches) now macro capabilities with a minimum focusing distance of 15.4 inches and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3, as opposed to the lens’ earlier minimum focusing distance of 17.7 inches and max magnification ratio of 1:3.8. Its minimum working distance is 14.7 inches, which makes the lens suitable for close-up shooting with natural light, keeping shadows of the camera and lens out of the image.</p>
<p>The 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 Macro has also been updated to incorporate Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements that have a high refractive index and can correct chromatic aberration at the telephoto-end. Moreover, aspherical lens elements, including double-sided aspherical lenses, will ensure a compact size and excellent correction of distortion.</p>
<p>The new <b>Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art</b> has been reengineered and redesigned to set a new standard of performance in the Art line. A staple focal length, the new Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art is a pro level performer for full-frame DSLRs great for many different types of photography including portraits, landscapes, studio work and still-life. It has been updated to include SLD glass and optimized for rich peripheral brightness with improved large aperture performance by positioning wide elements into the front groups. Other updates include an optimized autofocus algorithm for smoother focusing and a floating focusing system to reduce lens movement while focusing. Under the Global Vision line, it features a new matte finish, improved AF on/off switch and guarantees every lens is tested with Sigma’s proprietary modulation transfer function (MTF) “A1” measuring system before being shipped. Now with 13 elements in 8 groups compared to the previous 8 elements in 6 groups, it also has improved close focusing at 15.7 inches and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.6</p>
<p>Both lenses incorporate Sigma’s Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) system to produce quiet, high-speed auto focus. In addition, they include Super Multi-Layer Coating to reduce flare and ghosting, and to ensure high-quality images throughout the entire zoom range. The 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM and 50mm F1.4 DG HSM lenses are also compatible with Sigma’s USB dock and the company’s Mount Conversion Service.</p>
<p>Other recently announced lenses and accessories such as the 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM, 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | ART and USB Dock will be on display at Sigma’s CES booth. Visit Sigma at CES 2014 at booth 10431in Central Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center from Jan. 7 to 10.</p>

How 'bout primes

So I have 24-70ii and 70-200ii. Everyone talks about the need for some primes.
I have 40 2.8, 50.1.4(yeah I know seems sort of redundant but I swear it's not)
Now what. Of course I would love 35 1.4 and 50 1.2 and 85 1.2 and 135 2.0 but I'm not made of money.

I need another reason besides focal length to get a lens

For example the 40 2.8 is so small I can just throw it in my pocket in case I need wide and I'm shooting with my 70-200 or rented 300.

The 50 1.4 is a lens that can do about anything and is faster than my zooms for low light

Then I thought the Rokinon 14 for really wide.
And the 100 non-l macro for portraits and macro

This make my own unholy trinity of utility primes 14/50/100 with the pancake for fun

What do you think?

(Yeah I'm snowed in and bored)

<p id="TWP23">MELVILLE, N.Y., January 6, 2014 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the addition of a new concept camera to its PowerShot lineup: the PowerShot N100 digital camera. Featuring a new body style and unique, new creative options, the PowerShot N100 camera helps users create and tell their visual stories by allowing the photographer to become part of the image being captured. With the innovative and new Dual Capture mode, users can simultaneously capture special moments using the Main Camera, while the Story Camera, a rear facing sub-camera, will embed a picture of them onto the main image.</p>
<p id="TWP24">To help people create unique images that tell a story, the PowerShot N100 camera offers the new Story Highlights mode. Story Highlights mode intuitively creates a highlight reel of images and video* to create a customized movie that tells a story as seen through the photographer’s eyes – all done within the camera. No longer will a photographer need to use additional software to assemble this footage.</p>
<p id="TWP25">“Canon is continually working to discover new ways for end-users to combine high-image quality and creativity in a technologically advanced compact camera,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The new PowerShot N100 is a unique digital camera designed to not only create high-quality images and video, but also capture the feelings of the photographer at the moment they take a picture.”</p>
<p id="TWP26"><strong>Become Part of the Story</strong></p>
<p id="TWP27">Remembering a child’s first birthday and the parents’ excitement during that memorable moment can now be captured with the innovative Dual Capture mode featured in the PowerShot N100 digital camera. Easy to access and use, Dual Capture mode creates a picture-in-picture effect by simultaneously capturing the subject in the framed shot while the Story Camera, a rear-facing sub-camera, takes an image or video of the photographer as they take the picture. The PowerShot N100 camera then combines both shots into one distinctive photo or video combination. The images captured using the Story Camera can be placed in four different locations on the main image and in three different sizes at the photographer’s discretion.</p>
<p id="TWP28"><strong>Capture Your Story</strong></p>
<p id="TWP29">To help create even more share-worthy memories, the PowerShot N100 digital camera features an artistic mode to help users creatively capture images and movies. Story Highlights mode works within the camera to create a highlight reel of selected images or movie digest clips creating a unique imaging experience. The images can be selected automatically based on events, the date they were taken, by people utilizing Face ID, or the selection can be customized based on photos hand-picked by the user. As a result, the moments that are most precious to the user are intuitively combined, allowing for complete highlights of the images taken from a friend’s wedding day or a child’s first ride on a new bicycle. The final created movie will last approximately two minutes from the automatically selected pictures and videos, or if the files were selected by the photographer, it will last a maximum of five minutes.</p>
<p id="TWP30"><strong>Share Your Story</strong></p>
<p id="TWP31">With enhanced Wi-Fi® capabilities, the creative images taken with the PowerShot N100 camera can be shared with friends and family even while on-the-go. Using the Mobile Device Connect Button, users can connect to a compatible smartphone, a compatible tablet or a computer. Connection to the computer is easily done using Canon’s Image Sync1 through the cloud. For the first time in Canon’s line up, the PowerShot N100 camera has the convenient connectivity of Near Field Communication (NFC™) offered on Android™ devices. After an initial one-time set up, with NFC, users simply press the Mobile Device Connect Button and tap their NFC enabled Android2 device to the PowerShot N100 camera which automatically launches the Canon Camera Window App3 so users can share images from the camera to the phone with ease.</p>
<p id="TWP32"><strong>Enhance Your Images</strong></p>
<p id="TWP33">The Creative Shot mode on the PowerShot N100 camera includes four new filter categories to bring an enhanced artistic touch to photos. The filter categories are: Retro, Monochrome, Special and Natural. In Creative Shot mode, users compose their image and let the PowerShot N100 camera analyze the photo to apply one of a series of artistic elements of varying composition, lighting and color. After an image is captured, Creative Shot mode will automatically render five different variations of the shot to deliver unique, new perspectives while still retaining the original image. There are also 46 new filter types, including HDR effects, to help artistic expression reach new creative levels.</p>
<p id="TWP34">In addition to the creative imaging functions, the PowerShot N100 camera offers a 5x optical zoom, a 24mm Wide-Angle f/1.8 lens, a 12.1-Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 6 image processor to help provide stunning image quality. Users also have the ability to quickly access and then record high-quality 1080p Full HD video with the dedicated movie button. To make choosing the ideal setting for each shot convenient, the camera’s Intelligent IS System allows the PowerShot N100 camera to automatically select the optimal image stabilization settings according to the shooting conditions, so shooting in dimly lit or bright situations can be easy and accurate.</p>
<p id="TWP35">The PowerShot N100′s new body design gives the camera a portable shape. The three-inch capacitive touch, tilt LCD panel allows users to capture images at unique angles, up to 90 degrees.</p>
<p id="TWP36"><strong>Pricing and Availability</strong></p>
<p id="TWP37">The PowerShot N100 digital camera is expected to be available in May 2014 in white or black for an estimated retail price of $349.99.</p>

Kirk PZ 148 plate for the 5d Mark III

Hi Everybody

Am using the 5d Mark III with BG E11 grip and the Camdapter hand-strap. Brilliant for everything else EXCEPT shooting street... too bloody obtrusive a set-up. Tried to use the plate hat came with the Camdapter strap in the ungripped body. This makes the camera unstable on a flat surface and it tends to tip over withe heavier L-lenses (50mm f/1.2 and 35mm f/1.4) that I swear by. Am looking for a sturdier (wider) plate which will allow a hand strap to be used with the body while allowing me to place the camera on a flat surface without it's tipping forward. The Kirk PZ-148 seems to fit he bill. Does anybody have any experience with this plate. Can anyone get back and let me know if it maintains camera stability with heavier lenses???
Cheers

PS: hoping somebody replies soon :) :) :)

Baby on the way - lens help

Just for background I've been a Canon shooter for many years and am very comfortable with all things film and digital (35mm and MF at least). Yes, i will be getting a new camera shortly before the baby arrives. Yes, this will be perfectly fine.

I currently have a Rebel XTi (w/ grip), Tamron 17-50 2.8, 50 1.8, 55-250 IS, 40 Pancake, 430EX II and the full EOS M kit (body, 22, 18-55, 90ex). I have been rather amazed at the sensor in the EOS M compared to the XTi.

I'm going to be purchasing a 6D in the coming weeks as well as an EOS 3 (excited to shoot some Tri-X). I imagine it will make sense to sell my crop gear. I will almost certainly buy the kit with 24-105l for walk around purposes. While the Sigma is interesting it just doesn't make sense given how cheap the 6D kits have shown up recently.

My question is related to a large aperture prime. I'm considering buying either a 50 1.2, 85 1.8 or 85 1.2 (or even 135 f2?). I'm initially leaning towards the 50 based on the combination or performance, focus speed and price. For those of you with recent newborns, is the 50 the right focal length to start with? I imagine later adding at least the 135 f2 and probably something like the 70-300L to my new FF kit.

Thanks,

Christian

Should I go for the 85mm F1.2L II USM ?

Hi,

At last I managed somehow to save up some $$$ to purchase and upgrade my equipment especially my lenses. So one of THE lenses I was aiming for is the king of Bokeh .. THE 85mm F1.2L II USM, well it's Expensive alright but from what I see it's really worth the cash, but what confused me is that I've heard some complaints about it's performance in low light and how it keeps hunting for focus though it's a USM name holder, I'm about the fact that I might not be comfortable with it since focusing speed is an issue for me personally and might be for others as well, so should I go for it or wait if there's an upcoming upgrade ..

And thanks in advance ^^

Gear or Wedding Photographer

Hello All!

I am getting married in June and have 2 options as far as wedding photography goes. 1. higher someone to do it. 2. I buy gear that I don't have and have a talented friend take the photos. They have been very successful with portraiture but are looking to break into a weddings.

The wedding itself will very small and short. Roughly 10 people including my fiance and I and the ceremony will be 15minutes. It's also in the mountains. A pro wedding photographer would definitely want to get their monies worth for the travel alone. We've been quoted by 3 different local photographers for 2-3K. The price is a bit of an issue for what we a looking for.

After sharing this, my fiance suggested that we put the roughly the same mount of money into my gear and have my friend do the photos. :) Were talking roughly 1.5K on gear.

This appeals to me because, aside from the wedding photos, I would have something to show for my money spent. In addition to this, my friend will hand over all RAW files.

I intend on shooting APS-C for a while so APS-C lenses are something that I won't regret investing in. Also, the wedding will take place during the day and we will not require in any low light photography.

I currently have a 70D and a EF-S 10-22, 28 F/1.8, 40 F/2.8, and a 50 F/1.4. I was thinking about adding a 17-55 to give my friend some flexibility while shooting and an 85 F1.8 for close ups.

They will be using my camera as their 5DII was recently stolen and all they get their hands on at the moment is a Rebel t3i. I am assuming that they will get another FF by June but do not know what they really have planned.

I know it's a stretch to only have one camera and one photographer but we are also talking about a very small wedding.

What do you guys think? Go with the gear? :) Or hire a pro who has their own gear?

Editing critique needed!

Hello CR!

I got this inspiration to try out different editing techniques, usually I have done everything with Lightroom.
But this time I tried something new with Photoshop. Luminosity masks and combining Lightroom and Luminosity mask editing style.
Got pretty amazing looks with it and that's why I'm here asking your critique about this.

My friend was enough kind to give couple pictures from his Japan trip last week.
Shot with:
• 5D Mark III
• 16-35 F2.8L II - 16mm
• ISO 100
• 1/200th
• F7.1

I'll add the original picture that haven't been edited and then three other pictures that have been edited with only Lightroom, then Photoshop using Luminosity Masks and lastly COMBINE of those.
Basic critique needed to this one, I would love to hear your thoughts of this one. 8)

Mooses

Hi all,

Here are some pics of a beautiful bull taken in the forest near Québec city last fall. All the family was there (pics on my web site) but i followed the male in the forest for more than 2 hours to be able to take a few interesting shots in this very busy environnement. Very cloudy day with first snow (ice) falling. Pics taken with 1DX and the 70-200mm IS ll. Almost all full frame or very slighly reframed for composition.
