Sunrise!

So I was up early this morning and decided to get some shots with my rented EF 100-400L on my 5D3. These were processed quickly via in-camera RAW processing before resizing on my work computer and posted. I still like them though :)

anyone use the RRS flash bracket?

Wanted to revive a discussion on flash brackets, especially those that:

1. allow swift change (std CCW motion) from landscape mode to portrait mode. swift is important, as event work often requires one to change orientation very quickly.

2. keeps the flash centered above the lens in both orientations.

3. keeps the flash head in its original horizontal position, without a separate motion to rotate it, so that its bounce card is still in the vertical orientation (to utilize ceiling bounce)

4. mounts to an AS style L plate, i.e. does not require its own threaded mount

I'm currently using a Newton bracket which fulfills 1-3 above quite nicely. Its compact, effective, and I absolutely love using it to eliminate those horrible side shadows :-) . The RRS B series bracket (but not their wedding bracket) appears to fulfill all of 1-4 above. are there any others? Specifically, Custom Brackets makes a compelling solution but does not meet (4) above. Wimberly provides a solution as well, but does not meet (3) above

Apollo Orb - Speedlite batteries

Hi all,

I am planning on shooting some portraits during a gala this weekend. I recently purchased an Apollo Orb Speedlite Kit to get some decent even lightning.

I read some comments on the internet about the 580EX II eating batteries, so I bought some extra Eneloops. This time the Eneloop XX with 2550mAh.

Do I need to charge the Eneloops in my Maha C9000 or are they ready to go?
The package says preloaded. Break-in, refresh&analyse, charge, discharge or just use them straight away? I read a lot on the internet but I can't seem to find the exact answer.

Also, is a CP-E4 recommended?
How long will the Eneloops last with and without an external battery pack at full power?

Thanks a lot!

600mm too long?

Hi.

Ok.. I know that there has been several threads regarding this focal length and I have also created one earlier regarding the accessories needed to support and use a lens this big but here comes another one =)

It´s hard for me to rent one and I have no friend that owns one so the only thing I can do to get an idea about using this focal length is to look at many pictures of a variety of animals and try to figure out if it´s a good thing to go for or not.

Is it a very limited use for this lens? Does objects need to be VERY far away to fill the frame in a good way?
Of course I understand that an elephant can´t be compared to a small bird in an example and that is not the flexibility I am asking for when purchasing this lens. But maybe there is someone out there who can give me their thoughts on how it is to use a 600mm?

I photograph everything. All from wild boars and deers to tiny birds. Is it too limited so any place that has not got an open area of many meters is too hard to handle? Do I need open fields or is it flexible enough in the woods? Now I am talking about the focal length and not the handling.

Do you who own this lens often feel that a 500mm would have been a better focal length and for you who own a 500mm does it feel a bit short from time to time? I know that many use their 600mm with converters so that is a proof that more reach is wanted sometimes but for avarage use and not only small birds?

On a regular day I have the chance to photograph everything from small birds to big deers, foxes and so on. I have a 70-200mm which will often follow as a backup and I think I later will go with the 300mm 2,8 as a more flexible smaller lens those days the big one will stay at home or so.

I know it´s tricky to answer but maybe you who have the lens can tell me your thoughts and how you use it. And maybe even what made you go for this instead of the 500mm.

best home laser mono multifunction printer: Canon MF4890dw?

Guys, the subject says what I am looking for--do you have any thoughts on what is the best current or soon to be released model?

Rant mode on
I want a laser because I hate how inkjets are evilly engineered to not work in any function if any ink cartridge runs dry. I have have had a single color cartridge run dry, even tho I almost never print color, and then the whole device does not work. I will never use such detestable technology. MBA swine should be shot.
Rant mode off

I did a bit of web searching over the weekend, and my search led me to conclude that the Canon imageClass MF4890dw is probably the best model that I can currently buy. Here are the criteria I care about (in descending order of importance):

quality results (text more important than graphics)

connectivity: ethernet, USB, wireless, Wi-Fi Direct (for portable devices)

small (needs to fit on top of a filing cabinet)

scan into several different file formats, especially PDF files

double sided (duplex) ALL OF functions (print/copy/scan/fax)

Linux support

international voltage (needs to work anywhere I might move to)

LCD control panel: tiltable, touch control
Here are some positive reviews:

I know that the MF4890dw lacks Wi-Fi Direct. If anyone knows about its Linux support and international voltage, I would love to hear what you know.

In addition, I would really really appreciate it if you guys had any insight as to when Canon will be refreshing this line of products.

I ask because I see that I can get this unit on Amazon with free shipping for the amazing price of $215.95: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-imageCLASS-MF4890dw-Wireless-Monochrome/dp/B008YD1V76.

Such a low price hints to me that maybe this model is old and about to be replaced with something much better.

Do any of you follow Canon's printer product development?

Canon 70D or Refurb MK II?

Hello everyone! Next week i'll finally be purchasing my first DSLR!

I understand there are other cameras out there, but it's gonna be between these two cameras, the Canon 70D or Canon 5D Mark II.

I shoot Portraits and Concerts mostly, but also do a lot of just general walk-around photography around town etc.

I've wrapped my head around the details, and I don't really care about the Wifi/Tilt Screen/Touch screen features that are always talked about on the 70D. The Dual Pixel AF is nice, but video mode on my camera is going to be used less than 30% of the time when the camera is in my hands. At the end of the day what I truly want is great image quality, and low light performance.

This is what lead me looking at Full Frame cameras. Obviously a Mk III would be awesome, but as my first DSLR? I don't think that would be the way to go, as I want to invest in some awesome glass and not blow the entire wallet on a body. I've seen refurb/used MK II's going for around the same amount as a new 70D, so that really put the conflict in my brain.

Maybe you wonderful folks could provide some input, and make this decision a little more clear cut!

Thanks in advance!

<p><strong>More Sigma Primes

</strong>We’re told that Sigma is working on a 135 f/2 DG OS Art series prime lens for release some time in 2014. Possibly around Photokina in September.</p>
<p>The source goes on to say that Sigma is going to be very aggressive next year and announce a lot of high performance glass.</p>
<p>The same source also says that Sigma may have a surprise camera announcement. There are a few details to be worked out, but there’s a possibility of a big DSLR announcement.</p>

Blackmagic Pocket Camera: Need info about MFT lenses, and possible EF adaptor?

Hi all,
Well, I'm starting to get tired of waiting for the Magic Lantern firmware to get out of alpha for my 5D3. And, with it setting (at this time) an un-resettable boot flag, that when even not running ML, it causes quite a delay from turn on or coming out of sleep, I'm gonna wait to do that.

But, I'm highly excited about trying RAW video.

The BM pocket camera, at about $1K is quite interesting, but I have NO idea about micro 4/3's lens systems...
I'm not sure what lenses to get with this camera due to its sensor size, etc.
I've heard there is an adapter out for mounting canon EF lenses to this thing, which I'd really like so as to save me buying more $$ glass.

Can someone give me some pointers, maybe a some good links to read about this or a brief description of what I'd be getting into here on this thread?

I love my 5D3, but while I wait for ML to get RAW working properly without permanent changes, I'd like to possibly play with the BM Pocket camera....so, any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

I've gotten a LOT of good help here, but the forums over at BM are pretty dead from what I've seen so far...

Thanks in advance,

cayenne

What price to quote for used APS-C gear

Hi all
I am looking to sell my 7D, 17-55 IS and 10-22 since I moved to FF. I had an idea of what to ask for, but that was before all the price cuts on APS-C lenses and talks of 7DII, etc. I only sell my gear on Craigslist (not a big fan of packing and shipping), and I would like to get an estimate of how much to ask for. If you can give me some advice based on recent buying/selling experience or just general breadth of knowledge, that will be greatly appreciated.
All my gear is in perfect condition functionally and cosmetically, and AFMA-d with FoCal. The 7D is refurbished, bought 2 years ago and carries a 3-year MACK diamond warranty. The lenses were bought new, also 2 years ago, and come with Canon hoods and I have the box for the 10-22.
I have seen people selling well-worn 7Ds for $ 500 as well as some trying (unsuccessfully) to sell for $ 1100. Can you advise what would be a fair price that'll help me get these off my back quickly. Thanks!
Oh, and I am located in Houston, USA.

[P.S. Please note that I am not trying to use this as an advertisement. As I mentioned, I sell only on Craigslist]

6D compensating in manual mode

Hi all,

I have been using my 6D for some while now and I start to get irritated that the camera compensates in manual mode. When I change the aperture, the shutter speed gets compensated to keep the same exposure.

Simple example;

Manual mode
Shutter: 1/160
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO: 1600

When I set the aperture to f/6.3 the shutter speed compensates by setting itself to 1/125.

What am I missing here?

5DmkII + Magic Lantern question for ML users

I have a 5DmkII and found Magic Lantern on the net recently.
I think it could be a nice improvement but because it's not official supported, are there known stories of camera's died due to ML?

I've read it supports Auto ETTR. It sounds great to get the best image question but are you using it?
Does it really improve the IQ?

Why should I try ML for stills in your point of view?

Thanks in advance

Best Camera for New-bie

Have a friend who is interested in upgrading from her sony P&S for taking pic of her 3 boys...mainly family stuff but keeping cost around $700-ish. I'm a Canon loyalist and thought about recommending the Canon SL1 or maybe the T3I with kit lens and a 50mm 1.8. But there are so many other avenues to go...Samsung, Olympus, Sony, Nikon...all make decent looking mirroless and/or intro level DSLRs that look to have better specs than the intro Canon cameras. Although the size of the SL1 would/could be appealing for some one new to DSLRs. One feature that also seems appealing is built in Wifi transfer (of course Canon doesn't offer this near the price point she wants to keep at). Need advice on some good set-ups under $700. And for those of you with wifi built in, is this a must have?? Thanks

17 years old: My First NCAA Basketball Game ASU vs. DePaul

Hello all,
Last weekend I received the opportunity to shoot my first NCAA basketball game for ASU while they were playing DePaul here in Chicago. I am in the works for shooting college sports and ASU is probably my number 1 choice as of now.

Any way this was a crazy first experience...here are a few photos from the game, comments and critiques always welcome!

Thank you!

Another HSS option

On Friday I received a promotion from a local reseller for the Jinbie Discovery 600 flash, reviewed here at Lighting Rumors.
http://www.lightingrumours.com/jinbei-discovery-dc-600-review-1412
Out of curiosity I emailed them and asked if they had tested any of the Jinbei flash units for HSS capability.
To my amazement I actually got a reply, and he had done actual tests himself in response to my query.
Here's his reply:

I have taken four shots with a Jinbie Discovery 600 with a Yongnuo YN-622C HSS type wireless trigger that we stock and here are the results below straight out of Lightroom with the Meta data shown.

Shot with a 5D Mkiii quick and crusty (sorry) anyway, the first shot is 1/4 second no flash, 2nd shot 1/200 of a second (technically the actual flash sync of the camera), 3rd shot is 1/500 and the last is 1/8000. All synced fine as you can see :-)

I did these four shots on 600 ws, and 400 ws settings and turned the 400 ws setting down 5 stops which is technically 12.5 watt seconds and it still synced at 1/8000. If i put the flash in the second socket which is 200ws it did not work as the flash duration is obviously becoming too slow, I think it would only handle 1/500 before sync issues.

So it's clear that we can add the Jinbeis to the HSS-capable studio-flash list, along with the Elinchrom D-Lite RX4. Good! Personally I'll probably pick up the Elinchroms for the HSS function. I know that they'll deliver HSS with Photix Odins, but has anyone successfully achieved HSS with the D-Lites with the Yongnuo YN-622C which I already have.

FWIW I have had a previously excellent experience with Jinbie flash gear. About ten years ago I bought a couple of high output Jinbie porty monos that ran off heavy lead-acid batteries (which were cheaply user-replaceable) They came with a 3 year warranty and were cheap. Zero street-cred, but they performed perfectly for years until I replaced them with Einsteins and PCB Mini-Lithium batteries. I gave them away and to my knowledge they are still going strong.

Need Your Help on My Next Lens--Yes, the Lens Questions Again!

Fellow Photogs, I really need your help! I'm fairly new to the wedding industry and have one year of experience under my belt, with 10 weddings done this year-one as a primary for a friend. My question is on lenses. Yes, the typical, but strategically important question (when funds are limited) on which lens to get next.

This past year, I've use mainly the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II on my 5D Mark II & the Sigma 35 f/1.4 on my Mark III. I've just sold my never used Canon 50 f/1.8II & seldom used Canon 24-105 f/4. I can now mortgage another lens! I have 4 in mind, but can only get one at this time & wanted to get your more experienced insights. The 4 lenses I have in mind to get next is:

1) Canon 24-70 f/2.8 II
2) Canon 50 f/1.2
3) Canon 85 f/1.2 II
4) Canon 16-35 f/2.8 II

Which one should I go for?!?
Thanks for your input!

Canon 70D Video (used for this cooking episode)

So, I have been a long time Canon Camcorder user, Canon Elura-100, Canon GL2, Canon HV40, and now I finally have entered into the world of DSLR video production. I have been impressed so far with this camera, and I am excited to master it. I have been using my Canon HV40 to film my little cooking show on Youtube, but now the Canon 70D adds to the creative possibilities. I used the 18-135mm STM lens. I can't wait for my Canon 1.4 50mm USM lens to get here.

Canon S120 making funny sounds when moving it around (in automatic mode)

Hi everyone,

I have a little question for those owning the Canon S120.

I just bought it and I noticed that my camera is making funny sounds when I move it around. Those sounds seem to occur more often when I'm in the automatic mode. If I don't move the camera, it doesn't make any sound, but as soon as I move it, it does a little "toc-toc" sound (hard to describe, it's like the camera is adjusting something automatically when it moves). It seems to come from inside the camera and not from outside. I have owned my Canon cameras before and this is the first time I notice that.

Has anyone else noticed that?
If so, is it "normal" or have I received a defective unit?

Thanks for your help!

In defence of the 100D

So, my mother - a technophobe with a brilliant eye for a photo and G series addict - insisted against everyone's better judgement that she needed a DSLR. Despite our fears she would never read the manual and unlock all the joys of things like shallow DoF and RAW she bought a 100D, which I had the pleasure of trying out over a recent visit.

And you know when you pick up a product and suddenly realise its a class act.

That.

Despite all expectations, I was so impressed. The smaller size somehow gives the lighter consumer grade body a better feel - like the size and weight now match. The grippy soft touch rubber coating adds to the surprisingly premium feel.

But still. Unlike a real camera its not got enough dials. And then you use the utterly brilliant touchscreen to interact with the Q menus and realise that maybe you weren't so sure about consumer bodies being utterly crippled.

And then I put my 40mm pancake on it. And couldn't stop smiling. It's so cute. Yet so right.

So, overall, I'd not be trading my 5dii for one, but still. This was a camera many on this forum roundly panned when the specs were launched, and I think its worth a few positive shout outs. If I were going to use a smaller crop body, I think this would be a great option, and its so beautifully done that it made me more excited to be a Canon user.

The biggest flaw was making me wonder if I wouldn't rather wait longer to swap my mkii. Maybe a mkiv with a few more of the consumer refinements would be a nice thing to have instead.
