Canon S110 vs S120

Hello,
Just seeing what everybody's opinion is between these two cameras. S110's have come down in price quite a bit and wondering if the S120's features are that much better to justify the cost. Is the Digic 6 sensor that much better than Digic 5?

Forgot to mention that I currently have the S95.

Any help in making this decision would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

"Two New FF Bodies in 2014" - if 5DM4, would you jump in?

I know that if they actually rolled out the 5DM4, I'd be very interested in it. However, if you own a 5DM3 and have realized how amazing this camera truly is, what would it take to make you grab one immediately?

I'm so happy with my 5DM3 that I truly can't wrap my brain around what they'd have to put into a mark IV to make a guy like me jump in.

Thoughts?

Canon 5dmk2 - weak usb connection - options?

Hi,

So I shoot most of my work tethered to a laptop. Unfortunately the usb connector on the camera has gotten loose, it still works fine if the camera is steady on a tripod and not moving at all. But for situations where I like to move the camera a bit around in between shots i often loose my connections.

My options as I see it is.

1) Get it repaired, does anyone know what this costs? and time. I am based on the Canadian west coast if that makes any difference.
2) Get the wifi grip, i can then tether with wifi, or its built in usb or ethernet ports, correct?. Currently watching a few on ebay to see what they go for.
3) buy used mk2 or new 6d. Will have to hold back on this purchase till end of january. my mk2 does have around 110000 clicks so it is getting old.

If you have any knowledge, advice or thoughts regarding my situation it would be much appreciated.

What ads do you get on Canonrumors?

Ads appear in on Canonrumors pages. They used to be picture of pimply girls before applying some proprietary software and then their beautifully smooth skin, straightened noses and narrowed faces after post-processing. Now, the two well-endowed ladies advertising T-shirts, as well as ads for Ukranian (sic) ladies. These can't reflect my personal browsing habits as I never shop for T-shirts and certainly don't log in to websites specialising in pictures of girls (or boys for that matter). So, does everyone else get these ads? If so, why are they targetting us?

Leica CEO: DSLR might not be alive next 10yrs

http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/leica-ceo-syas-not-sure-dslr-will-still-be-alive-in-10-years-no-way-we-go-mft/

I better enjoy my recent purchase Canon 300mm f2.8 IS II before my DSLR dies ;D

I'm not sure how they going to make 24-70 f2.8, 85mm f1.4, 135mm f2, 70-200 f2.8, 300mm f2.8 list goes on...small enough to go with mirrorless body.

Question sir , EOS-M or EOS SL-1

Dear Teachers and all of my friends.
Yes, I already have 4 EOS big bodies and So many EF Lenses. My question is = I want Small Camera Body that I can use with very small lens( Pancake Lens) , Yes to go to Red Square or the Place ( In the Night time at the Place with many Bad people-Who want our Camera gears) ,that they not let we use the Professional Camera and Professional Lens like White L Lens.
Yes, If I buy EOS-M Plus The Lens converter--That almost the Same Cost as EOS-SL-1
The question is = EOS-M + Lens Converter OR EOS SL 1 ?---Which one better handler, and how about the Quality of Picture from Functions/ Controls systems of camera body.
Thanks you, Sir.
Surapon

PS, Yes, Sir, I still use My Point and Shoot Olympus FE 300, 14 MP, Super tiny camera, and Canon SX160IS 16 MP.---In my pocket all the times.---Yes, For the most convenient, Olympus will fit in my shirt pocket.

Christmas trip to Arizona and Reno - where to go?

Hi All

I'm making a trip to the US over Christmas and New Years. I'll be in Phoenix AZ for a week and in Reno NV for a week. I'm going to have free time and would like to make some day trips out to go for a hike and see interesting things and take pictures. Can any of you great people make some suggestions about interesting places to walk and see photogenic scenery, or any suggestions of places to go at all?

I'm thinking about historical Indian sites in AZ and lakes and mountains in NV, but where are specific places to go and what great things don't I know about :)

Thanks all

Cheers

  • Poll Poll
POLL: The 2nd ff camera in 2014 will be...

The trusty says two new ff announcements in 2014, one would be the 1DXs, the other...

  • ... the 6D2 before the 5D4, that's for sure.

    Votes: 43 38.1%
  • ... of course the 5D4 before the 6D2!

    Votes: 70 61.9%

What do you think - will the 6d be updated with a above-mediocre af system and dual pixel af for the masses, or will the 5d3 at last get a real sensor upgrade above the good ol' 5d2 and become the even more expensive 5d4?

Edit: I changed the poll question to make it's clear "ff in 2014" might as well be just an announcement, and actual 2014 releases might be "just" lenses. Still, the question is which ff updates comes first as this might matter to potential buyers of the current models.

Sensor production

Today, I have seen a news telling that Intel will open its fabrication-units (and technologies) to other companies.
Intel is the most technologically advance in producing semi-conductor, and will go with the 14nm technology very soon.
As I have understood, canon sensor are made > 100 nm.
And, 14,22, or 32 nm, the electronic will be faster, more energy-saver.

I wonder if Canon would - one day - make their sensor produced by a third party company...

Any ideas or rumors ?

6d, canon refurb issues, and AFMA results

I recently purchase a 6d from canon refurb sale. Tested it out, image quality sucked. AF was totally off, even after focal and hand AFMA. I compared shots taken from a bh demo unit, with no edited settings besides raw. Immediately noticeably better. I prepare a whole folder for canon repair to look at.

The choice was to send it back or have them fix it. I've need a replacement for my junked 7d I sold a while ago. I chose to fix it. Jus got it back, took some shots, then focal. Here are the results.

Minimal info on the repair sheet - AF adjustments.

These are twice as good as the blur city it was originally. But it doesn't look great, especially not full frame great. Admittedly, the pictures do look a lot better and it harder to argue it, but look at those results...like soft. To less soft. In comparison, before it went back the settings came back -9 -9 for this sharp copy of 24-105.

I will not an do not conduct image quality test after image processing, so no I won't be running them through lightroom or dpp to see how much better they can get. I expect good images out of camera.

Lastly, every image I work with is viewed at 100 percent and similar settings, so there is no deviation.

What do you guys think? More details to come.

Next purchase 300mm f/2.8 L II - should I sell the 100-400?

I'm planning to get the 300mm f/2.8 L II next and have saved up for the most part. I'm confused whether I would need the 100-400 after I do get the 300. That said, should I sell the 100-400, I might just be able to give myself an early Christmas present or else I have to wait a few months.

All you guys who have used the 300, have you needed the 100-400 after getting the 300 f/2.8 L II? If so, why?

Two New Full Frame Cameras in 2014? [CR1]

Two new full frame cameras coming?

We see talk of two new full frame cameras coming in 2014 with availability in the early part of 2015. It’s mentioned that the EOS 5D Mark III would move up the spec ladder once again, but wouldn’t be the camera for “total image quality”. That would be saved for studio based EOS-1 body that is coming next year.

There is no chance of an EOS-3D according to this report. Although medium format is “still an option”. This information apparently comes from a higher end dealer presentation that occurred in Japan.

This is the first mention we’ve seen for an EOS 5D Mark IV. If two new full frame cameras are on the horizon and one is an EOS-1DXs type of body, what could the other one be? I’m willing to wager the EOS 6D won’t be replaced before the EOS 5D Mark III or EOS-1D X.

I assume he above report doesn’t consider the Cinema EOS branded EOS-1D C as one of the “full frame” cameras.

Lens(es) for photographing artwork for reproduction

First, assume that copyright/contracts/permission/etc taken care of for the gallery & artist, so all legal and above board.

The actual question:
So, I'm going to be taking some photographs of some artwork, primarily paintings/2d work for now, for the purpose of creating digital prints of the artwork. I've got a 5d2/5d3 (planning on using 5d3), pretty good quality Benro tripod & ballhead, shutter release, and know about mirror lockup & such. I'll have to get a good level, and then either eyeball it (probably bad idea) or bring a few things to try and cobble together something so that I'll be able to make sure the camera is square on to the artwork, and the plane of the sensor is properly at the plane of the art. I do have a couple of speedlites I was going to use on stands with either umbrellas or large foam-core boards at 45-degree angles on the sides as seems to be the general recommendation.

So, what lens? From my list, I was thinking the 40mm f/2.8 pancake as it's quite sharp and won't suffer much from perspective distortion. Plus I can keep it fairly wide open, f/4 or f/5.6 and have a very sharp image. Alternatively I could use the 85 1.8 @f/4 or so, but that feels a bit long for most things, and I'd have to have quite a bit of room.

I'm happy to rent a lens for a few days, but which one? The 24mm TS-E is too wide I feel, and would end up with some perspective distortion at the edges. 50 1.2 would be desirable over the 1.4 for renting, but I don't know well enough about it's performance and 40mm vs 50mm? I dunno how different in perspective it is if it'd be worth it. One of the Zeiss 50mm? Canon 45mm TS-E? 90mm TS-E? Canon 50mm f/2.5 Macro?

HELP 24-70 f/2.8 II Repair - Is this within spec?

After six weeks away, Canon finally returned my 24-70 f/2.8 II.

My complaint was a decentered element that I noticed using Reikan FoCal software because of the massive dips in the curve. Canon returned the lens to me saying they adjusted it and it is "within spec."

People who are familiar with this software, does this look like a "proper" repair and within spec?

This is before the "repair":
