Another Lens recommendation request :)

I thought I might ask for a little help finding my next lens. I won't go into a ton of detail but I'll try and get the basics covered.

I'm an enthusiast level wildlife photographer that also likes to dabble in all areas of photography, and a bit of a gear head, as well as a technology geek. My goal is to save up enough for a big white, probably a used 500mm sometime next year. Also I want to eventually have a two camera setup, one crop and one full frame body. I was running a 60D and 7D combo for the last year or so, 7D with a Sigma 150-500mm or a 70-300L for shorter stuff, and the 60D with a prime or 10-20mm for landscapes. For now though I only have the 7D and I switch lenses as needed.

Long story short, my current lenses are Sigma 10-20mm, Sigma 30mm F/1.4, Sigma 50mm F/1.4, Canon 70-300L and Sigma 150-500mm. What I'm missing is a good standard zoom, and I'll qualify it by saying that I don't have a ton to spend and I really want IS for shooting video, my current lenses have made it difficult to shoot as much video as I would like. I like to hand hold or monopod as much as possible, I prefer walking and hiking to static tripod setups waiting for wildlife to come by.

My current list of options in no particular order:
Canon 24-105mm F4
Canon 24-70mm F4 IS
Canon 17-55mm F2.8 EF-S
Sigma 24-105mm F4
Tamron 24-70mm F2.8

The Canon 24-105 seems like the one to go with since it's decent/cheap/easy to find, I really like the features of the new Canon 24-70 F4 but that price is horrible. the Canon 17-55mm is probably the best lens I can get right now for crop but won't work if I end up with something like a 6D for landscapes and my 7D for wildlife.

One other tangent that I keep thinking about is to get the new 70D with 18-135 kit lens and use that as my second camera, I really like the swivel screen and video features of the 70D, but I'm hesitant to go with another crop body. Then again, a 70D with a 7DMK2 could be a killer combo next year, and combined with a Canon 500mm, yummy!

I'm torn, can't make up my mind and pull the trigger!

Thanks in advance for any help!

<p><strong>More Non L IS Lenses

</strong>We’ve been told that Canon will announce at least 2 new non-L IS prime lenses in 2014. The two you can bank on are a 50mm f/1.8 IS and an 85mm f/2 IS (the source wasn’t totally sure on the aperture, but did say it would be slower than the current f/1.8). Both lenses should be announced some time in the first half of 2014. The replacement to the 50 was originally slated to come in 2013, but fell into the status of delayed like a bunch of other Canon lenses.</p>
<p>The other lens that was mentioned was an IS version of a 135mm lens. It was unknown whether or not the lens would be an “L”.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

replacement for my 17-35 till there is a 14-24

Hello All,

I still use the older 17-35 2.8 lens...it has served me well for many years but I'm having issues with it. ( the connection between camera and lens goes bad. Have to turn off camera take lens off and remount )

Canon does not even service this lens any more. Checking into independents that might me able to service it.

What I want is a Canon 14-24 ( don't we all ) but since this is not an option, I wondering what the best stop-gap solution would be till they do.

My main concern is image quality for a minimal investment that I'll sell when the 14-24 comes out.

So far it's between the Tokina 16-28 2.8 or the Canon 14-40 F4
I like that the Tokina is cheaper $700 @ B&H vs $840 for Canon.
The Tokina is also faster and wider
The reviews I've found push the Tokina.
If build quality is a little lower on the Tokina so be it...just needs to last till canon brings out the 14-24.

I'm a pro shooter doing everything from weddings to corporate and editorial.

I have the canon 15 fisheye to cover the super wide stuff till canon brings out the 14-24.

Love feedback/suggestions

Thanks...Arnie

Comets

Well, this seems to be the month of comets. In addition to Encke, ISON, and the new Lovejoy, four other comets were discovered this month (C/2013 V1 (BOATTINI), C/2013 V2 (BORISOV), C/2013 V3 (NEVSKI), C/2013 V5 (OUKAIMEDEN)). Nevski and Oukaimenden are moving right along. Nevski is passing by the constellation Leo, and Oukaimeden is approaching Jupiter in the sky. Not sure if/when they might put on a show, but currently, we have Encke (a main belt periodic), ISON and Lovejoy sharing the sky and putting on a show for at least binoculars and telescopes.

Given the plethora of cometary beauties moving through the skies right now, I thought it might be worth it to start a Comet thread. I had originally intended to have a Celestron EdgeHD 11" with their DX equatorial tracking mount...but circumstances have left me with only a 600mm f/4 lens. Not particularly ideal, but it allowed me to get a basic shot of Lovejoy:

If you've been photographing comets (especially if you have a tracking mount and a telescope), post em here! Would love to see them!

Resolution EF 24-70 2.8 II L against EF 24-70 4.0 IS L

Look in the attachment.

The EF 24-70 4.0 IS L lens is the second best performing Canon lens (resolution) and only a few points behind the the 180 mm Macro lens.

BUT:
The EF 24-70 4.0 IS L lens performs only very good, if your object is a few meters away. If your object is very close to you the IQ is a big step lower (using the macro function makes in my eyes no sense - look before).

If you don´t need f/2.8, want IS and a better build quility (zoom function) get the EF 24-70 4.0 IS L and you don´t regret it.

Aviation Help! 5D 3 vs GoPro

Hi All,

I'm very lucky that I get a front row seat in an Airbus 320. I have started filming approaches and take-offs as the views some days are stunning. I would love to know from those of you who aren't lucky enough to sit at the front what you like from a cockpit video so I can produce something you like!

<strong>Shocking news….

</strong>….. The Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 is the best lens ever mounted to a Canon DSLR! DXOMark has completed their testing of the new king of the primes.</p>
<p><strong>Says DXOMark

</strong><em>“Without doubt Zeiss has achieved their goal of producing the finest fast standard prime available on the market today for full-frame DSLRs, but at a shade under $4000, image quality like that doesn’t come cheap.</em></p>
<p><em>There are a couple of other concessions to consider as well. The Zeiss lacks autofocus and being slightly larger and heavier than the firm’s <a href="http://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Carl-Zeiss/Zeiss-Carl-Zeiss-Apo-Sonnar-T-Star-F2-135-ZE-Canon" target="_blank">Apo Sonnar T* 2,0/135</a> it’s not particularly discrete.</em></p>
<p><em>Despite that the <a href="http://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Carl-Zeiss/Zeiss-Carl-Zeiss-Distagon-T-STAR-Otus-55mm-F14-ZE-Canon" target="_blank">Zeiss Otus T* 1,4/55</a> is a breathtaking example of what’s possible, and will likely go down in history as one of the classic fast standard designs of our time.”</em></p>

I've had my 24-70 for a few months now and its started squeaking when retracting the zoom barrel. I've sent it into cannon for repair (under warranty) and they've sent it back saying that this is normal. I'm not sold yet.

Never had a lens do this before - looking for some advice on the issue. Links to video of squeak below.

<p><strong>Canon P Imperial Edition

</strong>Canon Rumors reader Bernard sent me a few photos of his custom Canon P rangefinder. He had it redone in Tokyo with the help of <a href="http://www.japancamerahunter.com/" target="_blank">The Japan Camera Hunter</a>.</p>

My Theater Photography

I'm not sure if this belongs in portraits, but I was the production photographer for my college's production of Shakespeare's The Tempest a few weeks ago, and I'm looking for some feedback. Personally I think these are some of my best work. The fact that the lighting and set design for the show were amazing certainly helped.

Best tablet for on-location preview

Guys,
What is the most effective means of previewing your photos on location when lugging around a laptop is not a possibility? I frequently find myself in the situation when exposures shown on the camera screen are drastically different from when I take them into lightroom. I'm thinking of perhaps getting a tablet with either lightroom or some decent preview software that reads Raw, and using it to check shots on location.
I'm leaning towards a full-featured tablet like the Asus W700... although I would prefer something lighter and less expensive. I'll be getting a 70d, and I think its wifi will be very useful for this.
I would be interested in hearing what other people here would recommend.

Want a second camera body already have 5D Mk3, Anything else too?

I am in the middle of getting back into this wonderful Hobby (Future job hopfully). I have already invested deep into it. Bought the following items: 5D Mk3, 16-35 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, Speedlite 600. Built a new computer I have Adobe Master Suite CS 6. Have a Nice 28 inch PC Monitor...Good Printers but I can use local processing.

Now I want to get a back up Camera body but also have something that would complement what I already have. I was thinking a 60D or a 7D. The 6D would give me a Full Frame back up. The 7D would give me the better focus capability and a longer reach with my long lens. Also Canon "might" be bringing out a new body between the 1D and 5D..Should I wait? Should I go with one of my choices? Get something different? Or just get a second 5D Mk3?

Other items I will be buying soon are. 2X converter, 100mm Macro, Macro Flash, travel Tripod and heavy duty Tripod.

As for other future lenses I think I'll be saving up for the 600mm after the above items.

Also open to other suggestions on my Kit, I'll get a 50mm some time and an 85mm too. Maybe a Tilt shift but waiting for a while on that one.

Thanks for your help.

A little back ground on me: At one time I was going to go Pro then my real life, wife, kids and other things got in the way. Now I am able to leave what I do and go Pro so I am very seriously building my Kit before I leave my present job to go with my 1st love.

Canon 10-22 vs. Tokina 11-16

I'm looking to purchase an UWA lens for my 7d. I'm pretty torn between the Canon 10-22, the Tokina 11-16.

The 10-22 is obviously wider, I also read that it puts out a little better IQ. Also the canon USM is probably a bit snappier. However, does anyone who shoots this lens find the variable aperture causing problems in everyday shooting? My fear is that i'll be shooting on the fly and get screwed over shooting at f/4.5. Obviously at that focal length DOF isn't really a concern but quick shutter speeds are important to me as a photojournalist.

11-16 is great because of the f/2.8 but i'm afraid the zoom range is too limited. Does anyone who shoots this lens find that range presents issues? My fear is that it is more of a specialty lens and I wont feel comfortable leaving it on the camera for long periods of time, while the range of 10-22 gives me a lot more options. Also I've been less than in love with the AF performance of non-canon lenses.

<p><strong>Dual Pixel technology more than just AF?

</strong><a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_rumours.html">NL</a> reports that they’ve been told to expect even more new features from Canon’s Dual Pixel technology other than autofocus. Currently the tech appears in the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/986389-REG/canon_8469b002_canon_eos_70d_dslr.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">EOS 70D </a>and will also appear in an upgraded <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/889545-REG/Canon_EOS_C100_EF_Cinema.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">EOS C100</a>. Will the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2013/11/from-interbee-interview-with-the-head-of-cinema-eos/" target="_blank">C300 get a similar upgrade</a>?</p>
<p>Apparently dual pixel design will need the latest generation of processing (DIGIC 6/7?) technology to realize its full potential. The benefits of this alongside new CODECS will be seen in the next Cinema EOS cameras and possibly in new high end DSLRs.</p>
<p>The video and stills segments of the professional lineup will get upgrades in 2014. Cinema EOS will get it first, and possibly be shown in April at NAB 2014 in Las Vegas. DSLRs will get it in the second half of the year and will most likely be shown at Photokina 2014 in Cologne, Germany.</p>

Random (but Legal) Use of your Photos

Sometimes we enter photo contests or sign the rights to do a lot with our photos over to others. So far, no harm has come to my photos - if anything, it's been a great and sometimes amusing experience. For starters, I entered the Florida State Parks photo contest twice - the first time with no luck and the second time I won the monthly contest. Out of the total entry of 4 photos, one was used (as the main photo) on the cover of their 18-month calendar, one was exhibited in a local museum (forgive the crappy photo), my photo is the little alligator in the bottom center, and I just found that they used my (winning) photo for the cover of some water quality publication. They gave my photo a HDR look and (re)-captioned my photo screwing up everything but my name and the location...but still kind of funny and cool that they used the photo.

My commercial clients have used my photos for magazine ads, billboards, lobby art, and other stuff. Has anyone else had their work spread around like this after giving away or licensing the rights? If so, any funny or interesting examples?

TEN YEARS FROM NOW.

It is a bit quiet here and until the 7d2 or the high mp camera here is something for us.
I think it may be fun to predict what camera technology will be like in December of 2023.
Here are my few predictions:
1. DSLR's will be used only by top end sports/wild life shooters.
2. Mirror less would have evolved and be thriving.
3. Point and shoot would be dead.
4. Canon cameras will have 4 stops better ISO.
5. There will be lenses with 6 stop IS.
6. Canon and Nikon would share equal percentage of the market.
7. Canon will have 65 mp full frame camera.
8. The fast version Canon camera will shoot 18 fps.
9. DR will be around 16 stops.
10. 1d form factor will stay.

We all need to put our thoughts down by early next year and then look at this ten years from now and tickle ourselves.

Refurbed lenses and sharpness

Hi all,
So while I have bought refurbed bodies, I've never bought a refurbed L lens. I can see why someone would return a body because it did not meet their needs, but returning an L lens I would find less likely for this reason as its pretty clear what a lens is able to do upfront.

Reason behind my train of thought is the below:
1) Canon refurb stock to my knowledge is generally customer returns in the 30 day period or dealer demos
2) I've heard lots of people who will do sharpness tests with brand new lenses and return them if they do not match some of the reference tests online. Or sometimes they will order multiple copies and return the less sharp ones.
3) Most of the time due to copy variation less sharp copies are generally considered in spec (i.e. look at lensrentals data), and thus Canon would not adjust it
4) Thus, when buying a refurb lens and thus a customer return, there might be a higher probability you would get a less sharp copy than if you bought new

Is this reasoning crazy, or do others agree? :) I do know many people are happy with refurbed lenses, and I am not talking about getting a lemon here, just a lesser chance of getting the brightest bulb of the bunch. I've also heard quite a few stories of people getting refurbed lenses with a lot of dust inside, though it is unlikely that would affect image quality.
