All-I/IPB compression and SDs

How does the compression work on Canons . Can you choose a bitrate in the menu? Is it decided by the SD slot speed? Decided by the card speed as well? Is it always a consistent speed in All-I? And if so does anyone know the max bitrate for the 6D? (I think it's. 90 for Mark IIi) Just curious cuz I don't wanna but an SD card with a super high write speed if it isn't even capable.

A use for the 24-70 f4.0 ?

I'm thinking it might be a nice lens for a woodworker taking shots of furniture. At least that's what i'm debating about whether to buy it for myself. I wouldn't be taking show shots, but rather working shots to aid in reproducing some piece of furniture, or some part of a piece.

The lens is supposed to have decent resolution, relatively low distortion, good stabilization, and macro capability if needed. A faster F2.8 aperture wouldn't be needed, since depth-of-field is usually more important here.
The reported focus shift (worst at 70mm close-in non-macro) might be an issue, but seems like that should be fixable by a simple firmware update, i'd think. Hopefully Canon's already done that.

Hopefully the price will come down a bit...

60D vs. 6D slower at capturing focus

I recently bought a 6D, have been shooting with a 60D for 2 years. In the last 4 months I have been shooting a lot of hummingbirds with the 60D and a 70-300 IS L lens. In the last week I started using the 6D for the same shots. I am finding that the 6D is decidedly slower at locking focus that the 60D. Most of my shots are at 300mm, f8, 1/1250, high speed flash snyc all on a tripod. I have shot many tack sharp images with the 60D, but can not match them with the 6D.

Any experiences, help or advice would be appreciated.

shutter problem

Today, every picture I took with my 5DIII has a black bar on the bottom of the frame, regardless of the lens I used. The camera has not suffered any recent impact (of which I am aware). Is this indicative of some problem with the electronic shutter? I assume I will have to send this into a Canon repair shop to get this fixed.

Canon 6D video feed to projector?

I want to feed video directly from my 6D to a projector for a club meeting and may also want to record the videos for our website. Have not done much video but assume the EOS software will manage this interface thru wifi into my mac laptop and then usb into the projector? Any tips or "watch out fors" here? I did some searches on this forum and came up empty handed. Thanks for any advice.

Dual-pixel AF and ISO performance?

I switched from Nikon to Canon recently, and for my crop body went from a D7100 to a 7D. The 7D seems great with the major exception of high ISO performance, which I find disappointing compared to the D7100. Yes of course the D7100 is much newer sensor technology, so it should be better at high ISO, but I have high hopes of a 7d mk II in 2014 that would trump the D7100 at high ISO because of even newer sensor tech.

But now with the 70D having dual pixel AF, which is of little use to me since I don't shoot video, I assume this will be in the 7d mk II as well. My question is: Does dual pixel AF have the downside of hindering high ISO performance? I have read this from uninformed sources and am curious if there is truth to it. As a still shooter, I would be way bummed if technology that mostly benefits video shooters was really hurting us still shooters! I want the best high ISO performance possible in a crop body for stills and would be thrilled to see a 2 stop improvement over the current 7D, but man what a bummer if we saw only minor improvement as a result of dual-pixel tech implementation. (would be WAY cool if Canon offered 2 versions, a video optimized version and a sills optimized version). And before you tell me to just go full frame if I want quality high ISO, I own a 5d mk III and love its high ISO, but will always switch to the crop when I am shooting wildlife or other reach-limited scenarios.

Thanks for any clarification on this dual-pixel AF tech question!

Wow lens filters are hard to sell!

I have a couple of spare lens filters on Amazon from previous lenses I sold. They are all B+W XS-Pro MRC Nano 007m Clear filters - good stuff! In 77mm, 58mm, 52mm... But they won't sell for weeks even though I have the lowest price and they are in beautiful shape!

I'm really surprised, has anyone else had difficulty selling lens filters they don't use anymore? Or is this just an unpopular model I am using? IMO it is the best model for the cost, but perhaps because they are costly filters they don't sell much? I know you can get a lens filter for a fraction of the price, but usually you get more flare, loss of clarity, and color tint with those cheap filters - are people not aware of this in general?

17 Year old Sports Photographer

Hi all,
I am a 17 year old photographer currently working freelance and volunteering for my school's yearbook.

I have been a long time follower of Canon Rumors (probably about 2 years now), but have never been one to post, so this is my first post!

I was just looking for some possible critiquing of my work and want to know if I am on a good path to shoot college sports!

Here are a few photos and more can be found on my website: http://www.charlesbankephotography.com/

Thank you!

IXUS fun

I bought a new IXUS 132 (Canon ELPH 115 / IXUS 132 / IXY 90F) yesterday for only 69 Euro's and decided to try it out on my cat. Here's a few shots; I had a lot of fun! ...and it's interesting to try out some of the digital filters. It's a great little camera. The only thing that's really missing is a 'shutter priority' mode (there's only 'P' and all the creative stuff). So to get fast(ish) shutter speeds the only workaround I could think of is to increase the iso. All in all I'm very pleased with the results. Not bad for such an affordable little camera. The build is good, too.

eye focusing with 5D3

Hi again,
i'm playing a bit with an 85mm f/1.8 at 1.8
I'm having a 5D3 and i use this kind of setup for head portraits. so here are my worries:

There are two choices: spot AF and point AF

so let me see if i get it straight:

The spot AF is used for tiny subjects like eye lashes and it can be more accurate than the point AF. Right?

which one do you use for portrait shots? or it doesn't matter?

after playing a bit with both, the point AF hit the target better than the spot AF, or is it just me? i'm a bit confused.

In praise of the Tamron 28-75, F/2.8

I've said good things about the Tamron 28-75 before, since it was the only lens that would really focus well on my persnickety old 5D Classic.

I've had my 5D3 for about a year. About six months ago I figured the 5D3 deserved an L zoom so I picked up a 24-105, F/4. It's a great lens, very sharp, with fast autofocus and effective IS. My old Tamron sat on the shelf.

Recently I was doing a long studio shoot and started to feel the size and weight of the 24-105. For the next shoot I decided to try the much smaller and lighter Tamron. I was surprised to see how well it worked.

The autofocus isn't quite as fast as the 24-105 and it does make a little bit of noise, but not enough to be noticeable in the middle of a photoshoot. The important thing as that the images are very sharp. Of course, I'm shooting with strobes that prevent motion blur and I'm using enough light to permit apertures around F 5.6, so even a cheap lens will create sharp photos. Under these conditions, at least for me, an L lens is overkill.

Since the Tamron is considerably smaller and lighter than the Canon, I am a happier photographer during a studio shoot. I will still use the stabilized 24-105 for outdoor shoots, but in the studio, I'm back to the old Tamron, which, by the way, I picked up on Craigslist for $260 about three years ago.

This photo was at F/3.5, 53mm, ISO 100 (Alien Bees with umbrellas). I wanted to see if the Tamron would substitute for my 50mm Sigma in shallow DOF portrait situations. I think I actually dialed back the sharpening in Lightroom.

Question re: 4K

I don't even know why I'm asking this here, but we will see if anyone knows the answer.

Do you really need a 4K TV to view 4K?

I mean, I view a lot of online stuff, and my monitor's resolution is only 1280X1024.
We all know the difference between 480p and 1080p, and you can see the difference even between 720p and 1080p. And, this is all through youtube. Anyway, I've been watching plenty of 2.5K videos on vimeo... the video is so pristine... and thats on my 1280X1024 monitor...

Similarly, there is a huge difference between a blu-ray movie that is 1080p and a dvd movie that is 1080p.

Cam Ranger and focus peaking

Hi Guys,

I thought I'd share this information with all the MF lens shooters out there; the CamRanger accessory provides focus peaking which I find to be a great asset for manual focusing. Especially nice when you're focus stacking. The focus peaking highlights are in red and not white like other camera manufacturers use. I personally find the red to be easier to see and obviously focus on the LCD.

CamRanger also has a feature for focus stacking and setting up the number of shots you want but I have yet to determine if it does a better job than what I can do manually, other than it does it automatically after set up.

My Fuji X cameras have focus peaking and this feature is so nice to use with MF lenses. After you start using this feature its so hard to consider not having it on every camera you use.

Anyone Mind Another 70D vs 6D Question?

Sorry to be a novice, but I'm really torn between a 70D or 6D upgrade from my T1i. I get great results with my T1i, but feel like I'll really start blowing it out with the right body upgrade. I do a lot of indoor volleyball and a lot of everything else as well and my lenses are the Sigma 17-50, Canon 100 2.0 and Canon 200 2.8. For full frame I'd likely swap out the Sigma for a Canon 35 2.0 IS or Sigma 35 1.4.
The auto-focus on my T1i gets the job done so I imagine that the autofocus on the 6D isn't worse (so in my case maybe autofocus isn't an issue).
Thanks for any insight to include just sticking with the T1i can calming down.

On a side note, my third paid shoot is today. :)

Used Leica going to auction, expecting to fetch $1.2M

For those who have an extra $1.2M rattling around in their wallet, a used Leica Luxus II of 1930's vintage will be auctioned off in Hong Kong with that as the expected result. It's gold plated and there were only four made. I guess my 6D won't be worth that much if I hold on to it for 85 years. Interesting story, though. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-25046060

PowerShot Cameras Coming for CES 2014 in January [CR1]

CES 2014 in Las Vegas

Canon will be announcing new PowerShot cameras for CES as per usual.

Two cameras we’re told could be coming are a PowerShot SX60 HS, Canon’s big zoom range compact. We’re told the camera will take a bit of a “new direction”, though we weren’t told what. We’re also told that a redo of the PowerShot G1 X with an APS-C sensor could also be coming. Though the source says they haven’t heard much about the development for “some time now”.

I think it’s almost a guarantee we’ll see an SX50 HS replacement, I’m not sure the G1 X will get a direct replacement though.

CES could also be a good place for the new EOS M to make an appearance, but we can’t confirm that to be the case.

Remember too, that it’s the Consumer Electronics Show, we generally don’t see prosumer level gear getting announced.
