Isn’t she pretty?

Below are some images of the new Canon EOS X7 in white. I personally would like a white 40mm f/2.8 STM!

All the specs of the camera are the same, we’re just talking a new paint job here.

Handheld vs. tripod with the Great Whites

I posted this on another thread, but I think it works well enough to repost it.

We all struggle with getting maximum movability with our long tele lenses. I used to handhold a lot, but a 600mm f4L IS II, with a 1.4xIII extender on a 1DX body is quite a load. But as an old boy scout, who used to carry the flag in parades, I thought of using a flag bandoleer, which I did.

I am still working on a solution to strap the lens to the shoulder straps of the bandoleer, so it can hang in a stable position while I operate another body.

It is cheap small and very efficient.

Anyone try the Olympus OM-D E-M1?

I see that it's performance levels are impressive and I've been intrigued by MFT for a while. I'd have to see what the available lenses are like, some seem to have a lot of native distortion before in-camera correction.

I played with one in the store tonite and WOW! I LIKE IT! Feels like it was custom made for my hand, yet nice and compact, unlike my very comfortable but mugh larger crop and FF DSLR bodies.

AF was super fast under indoor lighting. Not what I've come to expect from mirrorless, much more like newer DSLR and PDAF.

I'm definitely going to have to spend some time playing with one.
At base (200) ISO the files look, pixel-per-pixel, pretty close to the d800 output at 200 ISO.
Hmmmm... The Fujis are really nice but methinks I small new Oly toy is now higher on my lust-list.

A really naive person

Hi all,

I am an amateur/part time photographer living in Bangalore (it is not my day job). Last night a friend of mine who lives in Delhi who is a documentary film maker asked a favour of me; to film a short interview with a guy near by. It was a situation where this was the only time and place it could happen. Despite having had my 5D MKIII for nearly a year now, I had not shot more than 1 minute of footage before, but since I was his only/last hope, I went out to shoot. It went OK... I had no sound recording equipment, so as you might guess that was not great, but I muddled through everything, and much to my surprise he and his company liked what I came up with (sent them the files the same night). This morning they asked me if I would like to do some more shooting for them... I realise that this is a great opportunity, and I might as well give it a shot. However I am woefully naive about this kind of work... photography fine, but videography is not something I have any experience with.

I'm not even sure I am asking this in the right thread, but has anyone got any advice for me??? Some kind of sound recording shenanigans would be useful, any recommendations (a good price:quality ratio, nothing pro, but good value and simple)? Camera setting suggestions would also be useful... any useful on-line tutorials too! :) Sorry I really am in the dark here, and instead of fumbling around, I was hoping you guys in the know might be able to push me in the right direction! :)

Equipment wise I have the following:
5D MK III
100D (18-55mm STM)
24mm f/1.4L II
24-105mm f/4L IS
40mm STM f/2.8
50mm f/1.8
70-200 f/2.8L IS II
2x Tripods

Well, that is all I can think of right now... ANY advice would be appreciated! :)

Thanks,

John

1D-X underexposure

I shot my 1D-X and all image captures on the display were fine and dandy. I downloaded the CF card into Lightroom and all of the captures were underexposed by 1.0. Yikes! This is the first time the camera has acted up in any way. I tried everything but nothing seemed to solve the problem with my camera. After a quick trip to the Canon Service Center in Irvine, CA, I learned that the exposure problem is a known issue. The repair is covered under warranty including a standard service and cleaning. Whew, I was so happy that the issue was not another bone headed situation that I had caused. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Trying to decide on a prime for landscape photography

My current go-to lens for landscapes (on a full frame 5D III) is a Canon 17- 40mm L f.4. For some time now I have been thinking about picking up a prime for landscapes. My thinking is that I want an ultra sharp, reasonably fast (f 2.8 or faster), wide angel (22-24mm) prime, with the hopes of greater sharpness and a faster lens. But I will be using the lens primarily for landscapes and usually use a tripod and try to stop down to the f8-22 range when I want to maximize depth of field. But it would be nice to have a faster lens for star fields and low light handheld shots.

I’ve been looking at the Canon 24mm L f1.4, the Zeiss Distagon 21mm f 2.8 and the Canon 24mm f2.8 IS. Though each has its advantages and disadvantages I am struggling with which way to go. Although it does not have the same build quality (although I am told it is a solid lens) the 24mm 2.8 IS is supposed to be almost as sharp as the f1.4 and is less than half the cost. And since I am normally stopped down I am wondering if the difference in sharpness is worth it.

My understanding has always been that a prime will outperform a zoom at the same focal length in terms of image quality, but I’m wondering if either the 2.8 or the 1.4 will provide superior performance in the f 11 range, over the 17- 40mm L f4.

I’ve seen reviews of the Zeiss Distagon 21mmm f2.8, with some reviewers saying it can’t be beat in terms of sharpness, while others rate it close to or on a par with the Canon 24mm f2.8 IS.

What are your thoughts on these primes for landscape photography, and have you had any experience, positive or negative, with these lenses.

The price you paid for your 70-300L ??

Hello, I'm considering buying one of these 70-300L. Would like to know the new price (in US dollars) that you paid for yours, and when, where...if you would care to share. Also you could share the price you've seen in the past, if you recall, whether you own one of these or not. Apologize if this has already been covered in another thread. I searched and the first 10 didn't seem to discuss price specifically in the topic.

I could be mistaken but I think I saw $1199 over the summer from one of the big retailers like Adorama...not sure about Amazon. That "BigValue" dealer on Ebay might have had it for a similar price. I guess what makes the difference, is if there is a Canon rebate on it at the time or not, but seems like sometimes there is a "sale price" that's suddenly the same as the rebate price, even though it's not an "official rebate". Then perhaps there are those times when the price drops even below that.

I am coming to realize this lens could replace two of my others, more or less, and might do as good or better of a job as either of them...so I'm pretty sure I want one.

NX300 AF vs. Canon DSLR's

Advertisements for the Samsung NX300 proclaim:

"If you demand performance there's a better option than DSLR"

"Faster than a DSLR - With 8.6 fps continuous shooting the NX300 lets you capture the moments within the moment with a series of brilliantly clear stills"

"Quicker Auto focus - A hybrid AF (auto focus) system combines phase and contrast detection for faster and more accurate auto focusing.

Is this true? I always thought one of the main advantages of DSLR's over mirrorless cameras was auto focus. How would a NX300 compare with a 7D, 70D, 5D3 or 1Dx in terms of auto focus performance for sports and BIF? Anybody with experience with both?

We’re big fans of this camera and looks like they are too.

From Reviewed.com

“Ultimately, this is still the best all-around DSLR in this price segment, pending our test of the Pentax K-3. The video quality is top notch, the still image quality only suffers in extreme low light, and Dual Pixel AF offers a usability advantage that nobody else can match. For a consumer-level shooter or hobbyist that wants a durable, control-laden DSLR that can do video and stills equally well, the 70D is the choice to beat.”

Image Quality - Body vs Lens?

Finally honed in on "lens" greatness (for my T1i) in a Sigma 17-50, Canon 100 2.0 and Canon 200 2.8II. All of these lenses work perfectly with the 1.6x effect so I'll stick with crop. With that itch to upgrade the body many reviews of the latest offering (the 70D) say that the image quality is OK which leaves me sticking with the T1i. Is it possible that there'll be a crop-sensor camera in the future that will get rave image quality reviews or is that where full-frame comes in and it's just best to place much more importance on lens selection?
I imagine I'd like whipping through touch-screens and all, but if there's no gain in image quality to be had then there's not much point really; I think.

Canon G1X or Sony RX 100 II or EF-M 18-55 IS STM

Going to Australia for 15 days vacation next month with my family (3 teenage boys & only 1 wife) ... our trip involves typical sightseeing tours like Great Ocean Road, 12 apostles, puffing billy, zoo (3 of them) and places in and around Melbourne & Sydney ... I like making a lot of short home videos clips of our sightseeing trips but I like taking still images even more ... so I will be using 5D MK III and a few lenses, (the wife feels iPhone 5S is all that she ever needs for photos & video), my 3 boys will do all the video footage capture (as they are getting pretty good at capturing video footage) ... the eldest son will use the Nikon D7100+18-300, second fella will have the EOS-M+24-105L & 22mm lens ... which leaves my last son (13 yrs old) without a camera and I want to get a camera that he can use and when the vacation is over I can also use it sometimes ... now with that in mind, I am thinking of the following options but can't make up my mind ... so any advice on the below options is highly appreciated:

1. G1X (big sensor, might be useful, as I use "Ken Burns" crop feature a lot in iMovie for our home videos).

2. Sony RX 100 II (I have had some bad experiences with Sony in 3 countries, India, UAE & Qatar ... so a bit hesitant ... but I hear good things about the RX 100 & the RX 100 II ... but since it is a much smaller sensor, how good is its video footage compared to G1X?).

3. Get another EOS-M with 18-55 IS STM lens (I already have one EOS-M, but not the 18-55 IS STM ... I hear lots of good things about this combo ... but how good is its video footage in comparison to G1X and Sony RX100 II?)

I don't mind spending US$ 726 for RX100 II (if it out performs the other two) or US$ 570 for the G1X but the EOS-M + 18-55 IS STM only costs US$ 369 with the 90EX flash, so I'm a bit unsure of which way to lean.

Given the background, which one of the above would you give your 13 year old, if you were in my place?

Just sharing some pictures from Xian, China. They would look better if there was some blue sky but that is a rare event here. These are straight from the camera no adjustments...the leaves were really that bright yellow

Cross Country

I recently shot the Schaumburg sectional and the Illinois State Cross Country Finals. As a cross country runner myself, it certainly made it easier in some ways (access to team tents, deep, deep knowledge of the sport, access to special areas, etc.), and they were really exciting events to shoot. Enjoy! C&C appreciated

85mm

Hello :)

Here are my worries:
The 85L is adorable but i'd have to sell my kidney to buy it :D

so i'm stuck between the EF 85 1.8 and the Sigma 85 1.4

I have a 5D3

i've tested the 1.8, i had absolutely no problem in focusing at 1.8. The sharpness was ok and with a little help in post processing i'm quite satisfied!

The one thing i can't tolerate is the purple/green fringes. The ones that are blended in the bokeh are unfixable :(

I'm talking about head portraits mostly.
The 100L macro which i own, is fringless on that matter.

I was wondering if the Sigma is any better? I need to shot wide open and i don't know which one performs better or should i just stay with 100L 2.8.

phewwwww decisions decisions...
