Get the 1DX or wait for the 7D Mark II?!

Hi everybody,

To start with, I'm not a pro. I'm just an enthusiast. I've read extensively on cameras, specifications, and such. From my understanding, a full frame camera produces better output than a crop sensor one. That being said, what can you recommend me to do in this case? Get the 1DX or wait for the (rumoured) 7D Mark II?! I'm asking, since, from what I've read in the Internet, the specifications of the two cameras are close enough for the choice to become a bit tough. I don't care about printing anything or selling pics or putting my pics on the front cover of some magazine. In short, I don't do paid work. But I like to shoot anything from landscape to sports, action, portraits.
Do you think the IQ of the 7D Mark II will be substantially different from the one produced by the sensor of the 1DX?!

Huge Issue with 1DX AF micro adjustments

Hi,

I am a wedding photographer from INDIA and till now have been using 2 Canon 5D mark III for all my work with all L series lens only and straight out of the box all lens with any of the 2 bodies were super sharp at wide open apertures like (85mm 1.2 or 24mm 1.4 , 70-200mm 2.8)

If you look at my work on www.robinsaini.com or www.facebook.com/robinsainiphotography you will notice that I usually shoot wide open and it was working great till the time I was on 5d mark III.

10 days back I purchased 1DX from an authorized dealer in India (Pune- Audio Palace) and started playing with it.

Though, Its a great camera but I realized that when I shoot wide open with any L series lens 85mm 1.2, 24mm 1.2, 100mm 2.8, 70-200mm 2.8, 24-70 II 2.8, 14mm 2.8 etc etc...they show sharp images from both 5d Mark III, however when I shoot same subject on 1dx the camera either does front focus or back focus.

After doing some research,I read some forums saying that such incidents happens and need so some micro AF adjustments.So purchased lens cal and did a fine tune and realized that camera was front focusing by +10.

Did over 50 test shots and when i thought that it was all set and took out to take some shots..realized that even after doing AF micro adjustment, camera still does back /front focusing and unlike 5d mark III, i never get all shots sharp at wide open.

their seems to me some big probllem, with AF on my 1DX as its very
inconsistency to focus is driving me nuts .

In INDIA wedding season has started and I can't afford to miss it as already booked for next couple of months....so I need quick solution.

Can you please help me.

How to teach a friend Photography...

I think this will be a fun thread. I thought I would throw this out there and see what everyone thinks...

- Neighbor wants to learn photography and wonders if I will teach her.
- I'm an experienced technical instructor, just need to decide what will work for her.
- Neighbor is a mom of foreign origin whose son is also in our scout troop.
- She eventually wants to buy some good equipment and learn to take good images.

I have plenty of equipment similar to most of the CR gang. My plan was to loan her a basic DSLR, (like a Rebel or a 30D) with a basic kit lens and flash along with a few good books and let her get her feet wet. Then loan another camera (like a 5Dc or something different), different lens, maybe a prime and let her experiment some more. Demonstrate the fact that she can get good pictures with any camera if she develops good technique, etc. Along the way answering questions and then teach more later after she is more familiar with what to ask.

Cart before the horse or the chicken and the egg: I think that many folks go out and buy a ton of gear, mess with it for a while and then get discouraged because it isn't what they expect. It isn't that fulfilling. My goal is to first see if she truly enjoys taking pictures before she invests in gear or gets turned off by trying to formally "learn" photography. Actually taking pictures is the most important part and often that is the part people learn they don't really prefer after all. Or, by actually taking pictures one tends to be motivated to learn on their own why or why not a picture worked and get the spark, the itch to keep going. One also starts to discover what kind of pictures they like to take and how they like to go about it. How many of us have said that if they could have known some period of time earlier what they knew later, how they would change their initial purchases, etc. By loaning her a camera for while, I hope to give her the ability to make a better purchase later that suits the style she develops.

So, what are the thoughts of CR members that have some experience with this scenario or teaching in general? Keep in mind that I'm not new to teaching but since this isn't an official classroom type thing, I figure I would try another approach. It's more of a private tutor kind of thing I guess. The more good ideas I get here, the better! Thanks.

Major IQ advantage of FF?

I know that you get a more shallow DOF and better high ISO performance with a full frame over a crop, but with good lenses on either is there really much of an IQ difference all other things being equal. I do get great results with my T1i, but I do see some ultra-great results out there that my camera just isn't capable of. The sensible option is to remain with my crop-inspired lenses and maybe go to a 70D or the next Rebel, but the 6D seems pretty cool.
I agonize over this stuff because I'm the opposite of a gear-hound. I'm a minimalist who tries to do the most with the least so it's quality over quantity. Thank you in advance for your wisdom.

This is because the market is flooded with too many DSLR choices, (it can be overwhelming and confusing for many) and point-and-shoots will soon be fully diminished due to advanced smart phone cameras and mirrorless bodies. A product line that has a minimal, easy to decide from selection usually fares better. (i.e. apple, chipotle, in&out, google android devices)

"Powershot C(anon)" ..The best small sensor they can make, in a fun, stylish, trendy,
body (i.e. lots of color options) with a ton of creative filters,
wifi, easy to use auto modes. touch screen

"S" ..mirrorless sensor, sleek, elegant super compact body for advanced amateurs, enthusiasts and pros.
fixed lens with wide aperture and medium zoom range, touch screen

"M" ..mirrorless sensor, larger, more robust body, yet compact, interchangeable EF-M lenses
weather sealing, touch screen, add-on EVF

"G" ..APS-C sensor, optical viewfinder, compact, mini-dslr body, fixed lens w/ widest open aperture and zoom
weather sealing, touch screen, for those who want a DSLR experience w/o interchangeable lenses, pro / enthusiast compact
camera

"Rebel" ..APS-C sensor, full dslr body, articulating touch-screen, interchangeable ef-s, ef lenses, basic AF

"x0D" ..APS-C sensor, top LCD panel, more focus points + FPS than the Rebel, larger, weather sealing,

"7D"..APS-C sensor, top of the line, weather sealing, advanced AF, highest FPS, more megapixels than x0D

STROBES / FLASH ..All need to be radio controlled, and the st-e3-rt needs to be smaller with an AF assist beam


At this point, every camera should come with wifi, GPS, ALL-I video with no moire, and 1080P 60 FPS, and headphone jacks!! (No excuses Canon!)
I also believe that every sensor should have the best dynamic range and ISO evenly, so that your choice boils down to megapixels, body, and features. (Sony sensors have proven that this is possible even with high megapixels) Although I know it would be difficult to balance more megapixels with higher FPS and low ISO, but what a dream that would be!

As for the "C(inema)" line, I would like to see the 1DC with a reduced price, close to the 1DX, which would allow Canon to become a quick and dominant player in the realm of 4K. The outrageous price has prevented it from having a revolutionary impact for indie filmmakers the same way the 5d Mark II did. At its high price point, professionals would rather use a RED, etc. I would target indie filmmakers with the 1DC at a much lower price point!!

I think the C300 and C500 are fine, just a little bit of a reduction in price would be appreciated. Finally, the C100 also has a chance to become a hit, if only they allowed RAW instead of the current weak native codec.
And also make sure it has all the features filmmakers need and ask for.


At any rate, I feel that these differences will allow all of Canon's products to co-exist peacefully, and with increased IQ in all their sensors, will allow Canon to have a more harmonious place on top of the camera market.

UWA: Tokina vs Rokinon

I've been thinking of getting an ultra wide angle lens for sometime, and so far reviews from this forum have pushed me towards either:
i) Tokina 16-28mm f2.8
ii) Rokinon 14mm f2.8
What do you guys think about that? I understand that both have cons, the biggest for Tokina being the inability to put on a filter, while for Rokinon it would be that there is no autofocus; as far as IQ is concern both are amazing. However Tokina's zoom might not help much since it's merely a 16-28mm, where in landscape most people would settle only for the widest. Anyone to give me advise on which one to choose? Or even recommend a third lens? The 16-35 f2.8 L USM II doesn't seem to be receiving as much praises as these two lenses, hence the exclusion from here.

EF-s prime lenses?

With over 60% of Canon's DSLR line (by product count) and probably more in terms of revenue percentage, why
are there no EF-s mount "serious" lenses? I've heard the consumer market argument and feel it's incredibly weak.
Certainly some percentage of photographers using AFS cameras are serious enough about photography to seek
higher quality lenses than are currently available . I'd like to see several reasonable fast prime EF-s lenses - maybe not at the "L" quality level, but then again, why not? How about a 15mm f2.0, 22mm f2.0, 32mm f1.8
and 53mm f1.8 (23-35-53-85 equivalent)?

Buying "dodgy" American Canon camera gear?

Ok, American camera gear isn't dodgy, it's all totally ligitimate, BUT it's a hell of a lot cheaper than it is in the UK (less that $ for £ in many cases)!

My question is, now that I have got your attention, "Is there any risk of buying Canon cameras and lenses in America when I live in England?"

Basically, I am planning to be in Vegas in February (I know, prices in Vegas are expensive, but B&H / Adorama, etc. ship to hotel rooms) and I am planning to acquire a couple of lenses and a body - camera body, not the usual Vegas type of "body" ;)

Your odd voltage and her majesty's customs and excise issues aside, are there any issues with using "American" gear in the UK, such as waranties or support?

Triggering E640 via PC terminal + 600EX-RT via ST-E3-RT

So I've attempted my due diligence in searching for an answer in the forums but couldn't find it.

Trying to plan ahead... is it possible to trigger an Einstein E640 via my 1D Mark IV's PC terminal (using the E640-supplied 15-foot sync cord) AND multiple 600EX-RTs via an on-camera ST-E3-RT, at the same time?

No, CyberSync won't work with the Canon RT system. No 3rd party radio system does, and I suspect there won't be one for a while, if ever.

However, I have seen some people use a Canon 580EX II flash in TTL mode on camera, and they velcroed the Cyber Commander to their 580 and plugged in to the camera's PC port. The camera would trigger the 580 through the hotshoe and the Alien Bee's/Einsteins from the PC port, and still use the Cyber Commander to remotely control power of the strobes...

How can I choose between 1DX and 5D MARK III?

I want to upgrade my camera which is 5D markii.
For those of you who have tried both the Canon 1DX and 5D MKIII,

1. how do they compare to each other?

2. How do they compare in image quality?(Especially under ISO 50 and 100)

3. Do you think that it's worth getting the 1DX over the 5D MKIII if I mostly do a lot of landscape shots and sometime shoot birds?

We see those words tossed around quite a lot recently and more specifically with the new nikon that made it it's tagline (for the cam as no video mode, mainly).

What would be the spec of a camera that would fit your definition of a "pure photographic experience?"

All the talk with the a7r and the df, I thought of a kinda weird machine. Mirroless FF high ISO and DR performance and so forth, of course, like 99% of us will want but the form factor in my mind is quite different.

The biggest retro conundrum of mine would be to just give up the LCD. We have cards that can store 500+ pics, not 36 expo films, why do we always need to look at a damn 3" lcd? For those who never did, I suggest one photo outting with the LCD blocked, you'll feel way more free. (bonus point, the sucker will stop draining batterie)
That also save space for a big @ss viewfinder with the modern HUD techs.

Second would be fixed lens. I know zooms are more convenient...but they are generally just that, a convenience. I really tend to be more original, more raw, more acid when bringing out the primes.
More space saved to go toward the inards. More calculating power saved for AF and such if they aren't lazy coding.

Give up all the software crap. RAW or jpeg of course but forget about styles, mode and all this crap. TvAvM.

Of course this isn't a "pro gear" as in paying gig gear but a high IQ toy for photog.

Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS II / F4, VS. 85mm 1.4 - Portrait,filming and weddings. 5D3

I own a 5D mark III am thinking of purchasing the Canons 70-200mm IS II 2.8. Has anyone used it? What are you thoughts? Is it up to par for portraits? Or is the 85mm 1.4 better? The lens would also be used for filming and weddings and was thinking that the 70-200mm would be better for both. Is there anything I should be aware of considering the camera is full frame? vignetting, moire, etc?
Another topic that I've been researching is that the 70 - 200 mm F4 is a pretty good candidate as well considering that the 70 – 200 mm Is II 2.8 is $2000. What do you professionals think? I've been getting a lot of mixed reviews some say that the F4 is perfect for filming but not great for wedding or portrait photography. So would it make more sense just to splurge and buy the 70 – 200 mm F2 .8 to cover all the bases that I'm trying to do?

What are people's thoughts on the 85 mm 1.4? Is that good for weddings? I must apologize for such noob questions but I just want to make sure that we are making the proper purchase considering money is unfortunately not unlimited.

EF 8-15 FE Vignette Issue

Had an 8-15 for about 9 months and noticed that the vignetting is not even when zoomed out wide. It has more on the right side than the left and the lower left looks the least. I have a 60D and 5DIII and it happens to both. Thinking of dropping off the lens at Canon's local repair center but want to make sure this isn't normal. Sample image below from 60D. It looks worse on the FF. What do you think? Needs service? Thanks!

BP511(a) vs. AA in a grip

hello,

I have an original Canon battery and 2 third party ones.
Canon provides 1.39Ah and the others reach 1.5Ah.

One of the cheap batteries seems to be broken.
The charger states it's loaded, but the camera doesn't display a fully charged battery.

I was wondering if AA batteries in a grip are a good alternative.

6 AAs provide about as much Energy as two original BPs, so I don't think there's too much of a difference.

If you use a grip, which batteries do you use?

I think a grip is useful anyway.
If it enables me to use AAs in both flash and camera, I'd be happy to buy one.

When discontinued, does lens price go up or down?

I'm trying to say goodbye to my 24-105 but I'm not willing to sell it at lower than purchase price. We are know it's incredibly cheap now. If it's discontinued next year do you think the price would trend up a bit? On the other hand I'm concerned more people will be interested in the sigma version or maybe canon 24-70 f4. What do you suggest I do? Cut loose or wait? It's collecting dust now but I don't urgently need the money.

Profoto B1 500w/s TTL flash (Canon only right now)

Um.. DAMN! Traffic crashed their site, but 500w/s with TTL - using their remote - 220 pops per battery - and it's itty bity. TTL is in the remote you place on camera, Canon right now, and they promise a Nikon version next year.
