Tamron announcement November 7, 2103

As previously mentioned, Tamron will be announcing a new lens on November 7, 2013.

Apparently the new lens will be a replacement for the current 200-500 f/5-6.3 lens. The new lens will have an increased zoom range (150-500?) and vibration correction (Tamron’s IS).

This is going to be a development announcement, we won’t see the lens until well into 2014. Pricing will not be immediately announced either.

How Am I Moving Along With Macro?

Almost all of these have been taken with my hacked 35-80 mki. I strive to take the most pro quality images with what I've got. Few older ones are kinda meh (like lots of noise and over sharpening) but I'm leaving them up there anyways to track my progress. Please keep feedback on this thread and not in the picture comments.

Things to be noted of: I don't have a good ring flash for this lens so i try alternate methods of directing the light into the subjects face with my YN568 EX. I either shoot handheld or with my monopod. I despise tripods when it comes to macro of moving subjects. All have been post processed and i try to sharpen as much as i can till I'm satisfied which is why i shoot with the lowest ISO possible. Thanks for reading :)

300 f/2.8 -a big problem

I just made the mistake of renting the EF 300 f/2.8 this weekend for a trip to Bosque del Apache. The problem......I LOVE this lens! The speed, focus lock, clarity and contrast were amazing with and without the 2x TC and even in the very low light of sunrise. No surprise but this lens blew away my 100-400. My trusty 70-200 f/4 never came out of the bag. I even got a few decent keepers doing BIF pics with the 300 + 2x TC handheld (yeah, my left arm is tired :o ).

So what am I to do? No way my budget allows me to get this lens. I am trying to tell myself that not using a zoom at this range created some issues and that swapping lenses and TCs was a pain and that the lens was too heavy. But, I found myself putting it back on the camera every time I tried an alternative. If I need a good zoom, I guess I could always look at the 200-400 (yeah, right $$$$$).

So here I sit. I know I'll be renting this or another beauty again. Some consolation, there.....

Seriously, does anyone think a 70-200 f/2.8 (another beauty, no doubt but at a much better price point) with a TC and some cropping can come close to the IQ of the effective 600 f/5.6 I was using?

Oh well.

Focus speed of 50mm lenses and other primes, especially in low light

I have 2 50mm lenses, the nifty 50 1.8, and the Sigma 50mm 1.4. Neither of these seem to focus very fast or very well in low light. At least my 70-200 f2.8 II blows them away, and my 24-105mm f4 IS is maybe halfway between the 50s and the 70-200.

Now the 50mm does give more light in the photo and lets you use faster shutter speeds, but it usually will not focus. I am talking about a shopping center parking lot (bunch of guys getting their cars together) and things like that. Yes I could use a flash, but that is not what I am after.

Logically it seems like the f1.4 or 1.8 should be a big advantage when trying to find contrast and focus, but it does not seem to work that way. Is the Canon 50mm f1.4 better?

This is with my 5D Mark III and 1D4. I used to have a 5D2 and 7D, and it seemed the same.

Upgrade to 5D mark III or keep my 5D mkII and get a 70D as backup body for video

I currently own a 5D Mark II and love it but looking to expand to something with more video features like 60p. I love the image quality of the 5D and have considered getting selling my mark 2 and getting a Mark 3 but it's still pretty over my budget. Then someone had suggested I get the 70D, because it has the best video features of any of the canon DSLR's and also can act as a backup body for my 5D mark II which I can then keep.

Will the 70d give me just as good video image quality as my current 5D Mark II? Or should I wait and keep saving up to upgrade to a 5D Mark III?

6D autofocus capabilites: let's bust some myths about it

I'm about to spend a significant (for my finances) amount of money on a new Canon full frame body, it is going to be either a 6D or a 5D3. The plan is to get the camera body and 2 very fast primes: Sigma 35/1.4 and Canon 85/1.2. The 6D has got what i want and costs about 1000€ less than the 5D3, but given the fact that the DoF with fast primes is going to be tiny to say the least, how is the supposedly "simplistic" 6D AF system going to perform? The main fields of application will be travel and street photography, family portraits, some landscapes, the occasional event, and everything will happen just for the sake of it, i'm not trying to make a living out of my hobby (or else i wouldn't have such quantity of money to squander on gear :D ). I just don't want to spend a significant amount of money and be disappointed by a quirky AF behavior. I would like to hear from owners of these cameras and lenses, lots of online researches and reading still aren't enough to make up my mind.

Canon 400mm f/5.6 focussing issues

Hey everybody :)

I'm looking for a little advise to hopefully allay my focussing issues with my Canon 400mm f/5.6.

I was out birding two days in a row where my lens would just not focus on anything in flight. I know on two occasions, my centre focus point (Canon 500D) was slap bang on a bird but the lens would not focus lock.

I experimented by focussing on reeds about 4-5 meters away then focussing on some buildings in the distance, it locked nearly 100% of the time with a very minor lag. The only time it did not focus on the building was when I tried focussing on a white wall, bathed in direct sunlight causing noticeable glare.

A more experienced photographer advised that its not my lens, its due to the cloudless sky being completely monotone blue. He mentioned the sharp sunlight is not giving the lens anything to lock onto.

You guys agree with his assessment? And birder with a 400 f/5.6 also experienced a similar result with her lens.

I had a USM motor of a Canon 100mm macro pack up for no reason and I'm worried this lens may be experiencing the same issue.

Thanks in advance for any advise/experiences everybody :)

file names

Is there a way to change the file naming structure on Canon cameras?

All images are IMG_xxxx If you shoot more than 9999 pictures you get duplicate file names.

When I shot with Olympus cameras you could change the naming sequence, for instance in 2009 I would use 09Hxxxxx as the naming structure, then in 2010 would change it to 10Hxxxxx.

Is there a way to do the equivalent with Canon?

Back/Front Focusing: a Lens Issue, not Body?...

Whenever I catch people talking about f/b focus, the lens manufacturer always seems to have the fingers pointed at them... but I don't understand why!

I'm open to being schooled here, really, but if the camera has a sensor which detects that a subject is in focus at its distance from the glass, to me, it seems the image capturing sensor must be at a slightly more or less distant position than the focusing sensor if it's not receiving the same light distribution, right?! Anybody?

I LOVE my Sigma glass but they require so much MFA on my 5D3 (50mm f/1.4 @ +16!!) which I've lazily accepted, I couldn't use them on my (now sold) 60d, though I'm looking forward to maybe grabbing a 70D for wildlife, with the option of throwing my Sigmas on there... But investing in MFA cameras out of necessity seems... Unnecessary? I'd love to use these Sigmas with a 100D but there's no chance of it if I can expect focus to be off on all bodies.

Maybe I'm way off with the physics/mechanics and it makes sense when you guys exlain what's really going on ;)

Thank you in advance!

Looking for a EF 135mm f2L USM...

I've been scouring the internet today looking for a decent deal on this great lens. Do any of you have any leads which you'd be willing to share? Nothing at Canon (refurbished).

I'd like to get a lightly used one. Have about $830 to spend.

I need one for this weekend (two weddings). I've been looking for a rental, but I'm surprised that I can't find a lens around! Online rental services are going to run, with shipping, around 80 dollars. Maybe I should just buy one!?

I hate to say you told me so, but...

Just attended an Olympus event and got to play in depth with the new OM-D with the fast 12, 45 and 75mm lenses in a model shoot.

The live view AF is really something else, even with the long lens and shallow DoF. Really really fast and really really accurate.

Makes me love my M just a little bit less. Still love it lots and lots though.

I need to remember 2 things:

The OM-Ds don't work with EF lenses.
In video use I use MF anyway.

I know canon have tried to design a system that doesn't alienate existing EF users, wheras Olympus have pretty much had a clean sheet, I just hope the M2 tears more than a few pages from the OM-D's book.

Dust in refurbished lens from Canon

Alright, so I ordered the Canon 70-200 f/4 L non-IS. Actually two as I did not realize I couldn't cancel an order and I had a 20% coupon that I wanted to use. Anyways, so I get both lenses and inspected them. The outside is fine other than some dust I was able to blow off with my blower. Looking through both of them though they both have a pretty good amount of dust in them. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth paying to ship it Canon to have them take it apart and clean it or not. I was hoping one would be clean at least and I could keep that copy but they both have it. I've taken some shots and I'm not seeing anything. Perhaps I'll have to shoot at f/22 at MFD and see if I can see it. I asked lens rentals their thoughts and this is what I got back in reply:

Its hard to say what you might be seeing without a visual but it sounds like either dust or cleaning residue. Most used or refurbished lenses will have a light to moderate amount of internal dust. If they aren't very noticeable, chances are they will never affect your images. There is also a good chance that Canon has opened up the lenses to be repaired at some point and left residue on the elements from cleaning them. This is not ideal, but again will probably never affect image quality. If you are uncomfortable with what you are seeing I would bring it to Canon's attention with some photos of the spots on hand.

I wanted to get everyone's comments on what they thought I should do. Thanks.

sigma 120-300 review at petapixel

http://petapixel.com/2013/11/01/review-sigma-120-300-f2-8-one-sexy-beast/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PetaPixel+%28PetaPixel%29&utm_content=My+Yahoo

this is a very good lens and is very good for wildlife on a crop body. some are scared off by the talk that it is bad with tc's. i saw the test shots with the sigma tc's at tdp and they look horrible? i decided to buy the lens and experiment myself. from what i have found so far:

it is really good with the 1.4x kenko pro/promaster, sharp, good af, good all around

the kenko pro/promaster 2x is sharp but the colors are washed out and it overexposes by +1 ev fast af but inconstant

canon 2xiii has slightly slower but better accuracy and constancy af, better colors and contrast, same sharpness as kenko pro but performs better in real word shooting

i will try and do some comparison shots and post this weekend

I'm done - I have all the lenses I need

Thanks, or maybe no thanks ;) to a canonpricewatch.com alert I set up, I just snagged a refurbished TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II at 20% off.

With that, I'm done. Really. I have all the lenses I'll ever need to own. I can rent longer super teles, other TS-Es, etc. for jobs or projects.

It's taken me a long time to figure out what I need, but I have and I'm so happy to have completed it :D

My lenses and uses are as follows:

24 1.4L II - I love 24mm, it's my favorite and most used FL, period. The f/1.4 rocks for events and landscapes, and it's nice & small.

TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II - I have more and more architectural work coming my way and TS-Es just can't be beat. I don't like in a big city or shoot interiors much, so 24mm is ideal, plus I can use polarizers and ND filters with ease. I borrowed one from CPS and loved it, but didn't have much time to perfect it. I was very sad to return it once I realized how amazing tilt-shift movements can be.

85 1.2L II - the 50 1.2 and 135 2 are great, but I found the 85 to be more versatile for all types of portraits, and I think it's THE people lens.

180 3.5L Macro - I prefer the longer working distance, included tripod ring, and compression over the 100L. Plus it has the very best color of any Canon lens, IMHO.

300 2.8L IS II - I went for this over the bigger lenses as it's far more versatile (300, 420, and 600) and truly hand-holdable. No gimbal needed, just more patience and skill requireed to get closer to wildlife. I'll rent the 600 or 800 as needed.

Extenders 1.4x III & 2x III - both work awesome with the 180 3.5L Macro, 300 2.8L IS II and 70-200 2.8L IS II

16-35 2.8L II - I don't love this lens as much, but it is very versatile for architecture, landscape, and events

24-70 2.8L II - Perfect do it all zoom #1

70-200 2.8L IS II - Perfect do it all zoom #2

I'm sure I sound a bit nuts :o, but I'd like to thank that I have all I need to own. Has anyone else "completed" their lens kit?

300mm B&W Portrait

I recently invested in a Canon 70-300L to pair with my 6D. This was taken at the thick end of the zoom range at Edinburgh Castle. I have Parkinson's tremor, and I sway a fair bit; and even with IS a certain amount of micro tremor occurs. So....I am pleased at how this turned out.

PP'd in LR5 to my own recipe.

A new pro body

Suggestions of a new EOS-1 body to be announced in Q2 of 2014 have surfaced. No detailed specs have been given for the camera, which shouldn’t be shocking this far out from an unveiling. Before the announcement, the EOS-1D X will receive a price drop and the new EOS-1 body would come at a $2000 premium. One would expect it to have a large megapixel sensor at least.

The camera wouldn’t ship until well into 2014. Apparently this information is being passed around to select “pro” dealers.

A Q2 announcement would fall in line with the World Cup in Brazil as a testing ground.

Dynamic range Nikon/Sony vs Canon

Hi.

As most of you are aware of Nikon and Sony (I know that Sony manufacture sensors for Nikon) sensors are better when it comes to DR and so on compared to Canon. I have read DXO-tests and many others that verify that. But there seems to be a point at a ISO-value where the difference is not that big. Of course there is an advantage in mp also for the 36mp bodies but the resolution is not what I am thinking of now.

My main interest is wildlife photography and I am almost all the time above ISO 800 to get quicker shutter speed.
At an ISO-level of 800 and more is the advantage and quality still better with Nikon D800?

I will soon spend a lot of money on a Canon 600mm and by purchase that lens I really commit myself to Canon. It would cost the same to go with a brand new D800 and their Nikon 600mm as only the Canon lens because of the big difference in cost. The Canon 600mm really is expensive!

So for you that have more knowledge than me.. Should I stay with Canon (5D mkiii and 7D) because the difference in DR at high ISO is not that big compared to the different brands at ISO 100 or is the image quality so much better overall for Nikon and Sony?

Testresults shows one thing but to use in real life under the circumstances can be so different.

My English is not the very best so no comments please 8)

Widen framing in post: "extrapolate borders" or "non-linear stretch" plugin?

If a shot was framed too tight and I'd like to add some space around it, for example for print and framing - what options are there?

Is there a plugin to extrapolate the edge of the frame a bit so that the extension becomes less visible than a plain color, or a plugin to do a non-linear stretch so that the outer sides of the frames are stretched while most of the inner part remains the same (I know for the latter there is a plugin with this idea for AviSynth video processor)?

How do you do it? Thanks for any insight :-)

What to do, you experience is needed.

So today while trick or treating with my son i dropped my camera with a camera with my 17-40 attached to it. it fell from about 3 feet and landed directly on the lens. The lens cover popped off and there was a UV filter attached to the lens. The Lens filter glass was cracked in a few places and the metal filter was crushed really hard on one side. There were pieces of glass underneath the filter glass. I removed the cracked glass and was able to get the filter off. Upon further inspection of the lens i realized i was screwed. A small ring from inside the lens was popped out. I am assuming this is something to do with whether sealing. Pieces of glass are inside the barrel. can i send this in to canon to get repaired or am i better off getting another one. right now a new lens goes for 739.00. if it can be cleaned out and repaired, what would it cost?

your help is really appreciated.
