New 300 f/2.8 OS & 400 f/2.8 OS lenses coming?

We’ve been told again that Sigma will likely announce new “sport lenses” some time in 2014. The first two to come will be the 300mm f/2.8 OS and 400mm f/2.8 OS. One of these lenses may be in testing for the Sochi Olympics this winter. A new 500mm and 800mm zoom lens could also be on the horizon, but less is known about them at this time.

A recent patent for a 300 f/2.8 from Sigma does make a good case for the updates.

Mma photos

Hello I have been taking pictures at mma events for a few friends (for free) and would like some feedback and tips to improve. I have mainly been shooting cage side and I am always shooting at caged events. My camera bodies are not ideal but I am trying my best to work with what I have. I have a 6d and t3i and mainly use my tamron 24-70 2.8 and my sigma 70-200 2.8. I have been getting as close to the cage as possible and all but the lighting is so awful in the events it makes it hard to get great pics and I cannot use flash. All my equipment is I'm my signature Thanks for any info and feedback

Setting up 600ex speedlite system

Ok, I'm starting to feel real stupid over here.

I'm still having problems setting up my speedlite system. I've read the manuals multiple times and I'm still a bit clueless.
I use two 600ex and a St-e3-rt in two westcott softboxes, so it's a pretty small and simple set up, or should be.

I find myself constantly having problems with understanding exactly how the speedlite menu-system work over radio. Somehow I mange to set it up at every shoot, but mostly by pressing randomly on buttons and I end up going with "another plan" because of the flash guns refusing to work with me.

Could someone please write a guide on how to set up basically three 600ex (since st-e3-rt works just like a flash menu-wise) with one as master and two slaves. I sometimes use ETTL on both flashes and sometimes want full manual mode when I don't want lighting to change over time.

Thank you very much,

Filters for Sigma 18-35 f1.8

Hi Canonrumors,

I am looking at getting a Variable ND filter for my kit ( I know a set of ND's is better, but it seems like it would be out of my budget. I also like the ability to use variable ND for video purposes).

My question is two fold:
1. Because it is a wide angle lens, do I need to get a "slim" version and is it out of the question using a 77 with a step up ring to the 72mm filter size of the lens?
2. Which Variable ND's, if any have you had success with? My budget is about 150 for the filter.

Thanks,

Sam

moving from nikon D40 to Canon 5 D (classic)

Hello :)

first post here. I live and work in India and photography is strictly a hobby. Over the last 5 years, I've taken about 20,000 photos with my nikon D40 and while I'm in love with the camera, I feel I've outgrown the camera mostly.
I only have the kit lens 18-55, an additional 55-200 VR and the SB-400 flash.

I analysed the exif data on about 5000 of my images and realized that about half the shots are at the 18 mm APS-C end. About 92% are in 18-85 mm range. Thus, my needs are at the wide end (photograph the ancient monuments of India more than anything else, very limited people, some street scene, flash usage is about 10% of the time so can dispense with that possibly?)

I was contemplating upgrading to a nikon D7000 / D7100 (and a matching lens) when the thought of getting a canon 5D (classic) occurred. I reckoned I'd spend about $1200-1500 if I buy the nikon combination of D7100 with 18-140 or D7000 with 16-85 and for the same amount of money, I can look at a full frame if I get a canon classic! They're going on ebay for about $600 for a good piece and I could put the remaining $600 or so towards a good multipurpose lens (say a 24-105 L)?

Is this combination still worth a purchase? Should I look at another lens?

my primary considerations for making this move would be good image quality, reliability of equipment (lots of dust where i live and shoot) and usage for next 5+ years?

Any suggestions would be great!

thanks!
- Vaibhav

Time for a silly question...

Ok, here is the situation. I already have a set of 2 Elinchrom D-Lite heads with the El-Skyport trigger system.

I'm looking at moving over to Bowens eventually but in the meantime I'm going to buy a single Gemini 5000R head to be my main light, and a Bowens Travelpak to do some outdoor portraits. I'm only going to use the Elinchrom lights with it in the studio though.

Here's the thing... The Elinchrom kit comes with its own radio trigger system, and the Bowens strobe comes with nothing but has an option for Bowens' own trigger system.

Now the stupid question: Will the Elinchrom trigger on the camera set off the Gemini too?

I know, it's a major long-shot. But stranger things have happened, and if you don't ask, you don't know.

Assuming it is a stupid question, what are my options for triggering all three in the studio?

If I had the Elinchrom transceiver on the camera, could I connect the Bowens light using a cable? Would one cancel out the other? Would the camera throw a Sh1t-fit?

I dont want to buy the Bowens trigger just yet as I'm sure it won't trigger the Elinchroms either.

Would a Pocket Wizard trigger the built in Elinchrom receivers? I know, anther long shot.

I know the real answer is a Pocket Wizard set up that covers all three strobes, but I checked before I flushed last time and, sadly, there was no money.

Your thoughts please, Ladies and Gentlemen.

Whats next

Okay i shot Nikon for years now i've decided that i want to add the Canon system to my repertoire. I've decided that i want only the best lenses so i have 5 in mind. What do you think of my collection so far or what do you recommend? I think my next buy should be the 16-35 2.8. Oh I shoot landscapes, portraits, events like volleyball and the occasional wedding

I have
24-70 2.8 II
50 1.2

Help on Markins Plate for rental Canon 300 2.8 II

I'm renting a 300 2.8 II for a couple of days and was wondering if anyone could tell me whether I can fit my markins plate PL-55 on it? it is the plate I have for the 70-200 2.8 II

http://www.markins.com/2.0/eng/products/plates/pl55.html

I have never used the 300 II so do not know if the lens curved foot would accept this plate given the plate it has a stop on one side. I would think of aligning the plate's stop to the forward side of the foot but will the screw position have enough play to fit it?

Though i'll be using the 300 mostly handheld I would really like to be able to use it as well on my tripod and I don't want to buy another plate just for a rental lens.

used 1Ds Mark 3 or 6D for Studio Work, Streetphotography?

Hello there
I have a 1D-X for sports and a 1D-M3 as backup for sports. And well i have a few 5Ds as well.

Now I could get a used 1Ds M3 from a trustable source. It got a new shutter this June.( i saw the repair bill from CPS)
It will be about 2200 Euro. (body only) A new 6D here is about 1650 Euro (body)
I'm going to get a camera for studio work with e.g. the 24-70 2.8II and for doing street photography with a 50 f1.4 or 85 1.8 etc. - would you go for the new 6D or the used 1Ds M3 ?

I should mention: i don't care for video or wlan or gps.

This momma is looking to buy a camera ?

I've been reviewing and reading for months now and still can't come to a solid decision . I'm a momma looking to buy a nice camera to take pictures of mostly my son with . I would like to be able to record video and take pics at the same time. I don't want to need a newer camera with more features later. Would like to spend around 700ish .. Would like touch screen if that would be easier to use ... I've been told to just get a t3 but I feel I will outgrow it quickly .. I've been leaning towards a 60d... I'm in need of some major direction.. Hopefully I can find it here . Thanks to everyone who helps ;-)

135 F1.8L IS

Who else would be all over this if they could keep it to around 25% larger than the current 135L and 50% more expensive ($1,700 range I'm thinking). The current 135L is really nice but lacking IS and weather sealing are bummers, and the extra 1/3 of a stop with F1.8 would be appreciated for really low light work like concerts. I know it has been patented and the current L lens is a pretty old design - would be sweet if Canon brought this patent to market in 2014. Yes yes I know it will be a good bit more expensive and also larger than the current lens but I think the upgrades would be well worth it. I'm curious how many other folks feel the same way. What a sweet pairing it would make with the 70-200 F4 IS or 70-300L to cover the normal telephoto range.

Did A Quick Family Portrait for Some Friends... Help Me Choose?

So, some friends of mine asked me to do a farm themed family portrait for them. Everyone was very busy, and the only time everyone was available at the same time was 1 in the afternoon today. Ugh. They wanted a certain background, which resulted in the sun being partially in front of them. It was hard getting everyone to try not to squint. I used on camera speedlight to try and lessen the shadows on their faces. This was very quick and I didn't have too much time to make adjustments to camera and flash settings. I'm not 100% happy with any of them, but I need to pick one to edit, and have it printed for a 24"x20" frame. I like #10 the best, but the 4th person in is moving their hand and it is slightly blurred >:(.

Technique...

I just learned the "Rule of Thirds," which I really didn't know about till 2 of my friends were arguing about it 2 days ago. So out of curiosity, I decided to check it out now. I was surprised, cause I was framing my pictures and videos like that unconsciously.

I learned a lot of different types of techniques via youtube, especially with DigitalRev.
Long Exposure, Double Exposure, IR photography, Prism Photography, etc.

I'm sure given that many of the members here are professional photographers. I was hoping that you can share a technique or two with the forum? Unless you think that what you do is a trade secret.

LP-6 total battery failure

I spent the day kayaking.... temperature started around freezing and warmed up to about 5C later in the day... my 60D with me. The camera was working fine and showing full charge on the battery and then it went dead... absolutely nothing! and for once I had not brought a spare battery.. I paddled for about another 5 hours and saw a half dozen or more Great Blue Herons, one from about 10 feet away (I think they were mocking my brick camera) and eventually went home.

When I got home I tried a second battery and the camera came to life. I put the dead battery into the charger and nothing happened... no blinking, no lights, nothing.... tried another battery in the charger and the charger worked properly... this battery instantly went from indicating a full charge to absolutely nothing.... my voltmeter across the power pins shows no voltage whatsoever.....

Has anyone heard of this happening before? It is a real Canon battery, about 2 years old.

Melbourne Cemetery Statue Project

Statues, statues, statues everywhere:

I recently did a walk around Melbourne General Cemetery in Australia photographing statues with my MKIII and Sigma 20mm and 180mm macro lenses. Cemetery's are great places for shooting and they are generally in the dead centre of town [he he].

Check out my Melbourne Cemetery statue work:

SL1/100D vs EOS-M image quality

(Apologies if this has been asked/answered before, but if so I can't find it.) I couldn't stand using the EOS-M but was impressed by its image quality as far as APS-C sensors go, somewhat better than the Rebel I briefly used for a while as a back-up. Can anyone who has used both in RAW mode say whether the SL1 offers similarly improved image quality? (There are lots of reviews of each around the web, of course, but the only comparisons I've seen are of out-of-camera JPEGs and thus useless.) Thanks in advance.
