What lens do recommend?

I'm expecting my first child in the near future and I was wondering what the group thinks I should do for those first shots in the hospital.

I only have a crop body. I have the 50 1.8, and a Sigma 18-50 2.8.

I've never been too enthused about my 50 1.8; on crop I find it isn't wide enough or isn't telephoto enough for the kind of shots I like, and its minimum focus distance isn't that great.

I don't have much money and have been eyeing the 28 1.8 or 35 2 (around $300-400), which would you recommend? I'm interested in the shallow dof shots that I've seen all around.

Is there something else in the <$400 used range I should consider? The 85 1.8 is so tempting, but I feel it'll be too narrow on crop (the room isn't that big)?

Thanks for any advice!

Ttyl

January in Japan...Advice?

Hello All-

I racked up enough miles to cover flights and hotel for a trip to Japan from Jan 9-18, 2014. I'm flying into Tokyo. The main draws for me are the snow monkeys near Nagano and Tokyo itself. I plan to spend 2-3 days on the monkeys, and other than flying into and out of Tokyo I am flexible. Is Hokkaido even doable in this time frame? I considered Kyoto to fill the time not used in Nagano or Tokyo. Is there much to see in Kyoto at this time?

Also of interest to me is whether I should rent a lens. I will be bringing my 16-35II, 70-200II, and nifty 50 on my 5D3. I may own a 24-70II by then. Should I rent the 85 1.2 for the trip? Monkeys are like people, so portraits, right? Worth it to bring my 600EX-RT and ST-E3 RT to do a little off-camera flash? Or do you think the monkeys will flip out if I pop them with a speedlight?

How useful might a macro be on a Japan trip? I'm thinking markets, sushi, possibly even a tight shot of the monkeys' eyes.

I'll likely bring either a 1.4x or 2x bc why not, and of course my tripod.

So, what say you collective CR intellect?

Seeking advice for set of primes

Hi all:

I need some info from the fine forum members here who have a collection of primes, and what set of focal lengths you have.

There was a recommendation I heard that to be economical, if I had one focal length I should spread every lens out 2x. (e.g. 24 + 50+ 100 or 35 + 85 + 135). Does this make any sense at all?

I have already started by ordering a 35mm f/2 IS USM, but I still need a 50mm (I will wait until the CR2 level rumored f1.8 IS USM comes 2014). I could not afford the L primes.

Thanks!

Background: Last week I purchased a 24-70mm f/2.8L II, it was a marvelous lens, real good sharpness/contrast/colors - it was hard to part with it, but as I'm not making money out of photography I came to my senses and realized it was an extravagant purchase for me personally. After a week I ashamedly returned it to the photo shop. (Nitpicked on my copy about the soft corner sharpness on the lower left even at 35mm f/8. All other corners were significantly sharper and the vignetting was heavier on the left of frame).

I am going back to primes. I ordered a 35mm f/2 IS USM. I love the 35mm focal length, I mostly do documentary/"fly on the wall" style of photography.

Advice on pricing

Hello everybody. I would describe myself as a non-professional photography enthusiast, since I have a different day job to pay the bills, but I do make some money here and there from photography (have sold a few pictures to businesses, done a wedding, etc). Last year I did the family Christmas card of a friend, and I did it for free, since it was fun for me and the first time I did such a thing (I know, I know, I ruined somebody's business). It turns out they were very happy, and this year they want to pay me to do it again. I don't really need the money, but it certainly feels good (plus it justifies new equipment), so I'm planning to charge them a reasonable price. And here is where I need your help. What it is "a reasonable price". I will probably spend half a Sunday at their place planning, setting up, shooting (eating dinner) and then several hours in post. How much would you professionals charge for something like this? I live in Knoxville, TN, in case you want to take cost of living into account.

Thanks for any input,
Anthony

5d Mark 3 Fail

I have been experiencing a phenomena with my 5D Mark iii and wanted to see if anyone else have had this issue. I have sent both my camera in as well as my flash and Canon said nothing is wrong. I shot a quick video this morning showing my issue then called canon tech support in Virginia and to my surprise this issue was being duplicated by the tech.
In a nutshell My camera is all in Manual except for the focus and I am using either my 580EX2 flash or the 600EX-RT flash on ETTL directly mounted to the hot shoe. After taking a photo (typically happens when over 800 iso) I wait for about a second or two after the green confirmation light turns off and the take another photo. The Auto focus assist light turns on, the camera locks focus and takes the photo, however the flash fails to fire. It seems to only happen when in auto focus and I manually select the ISO. If I use it in manual focus or in auto ISO select this issue does not appear.
The tech at canon has no idea why it does this because he also tried it on the 7D as well as the 70D and the flash fired each time. The issue only happens on the 5D Mark 2 and 3. It happens more often when in a dimly lit room as opposed to a bright room. Not sure if it is related, but my issues started on my Mark3 only after I updated the firmware 5 months ago or so.

Please let me know if anyone else has experienced this problem and what they did to fix it.

24-70mm f/2.8 L mkII & 50mm f/1.4???

So I just bought the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L mk II yesterday and as luck would have it, was just offered a brand new Canon 50mm f/1.4 for a very, very good price.

So the question is, should I buy it? In fact, with the vaunted performance of the 24-70, does it still make sense to buy a 24mm, 35mm, 50mm or any other prime in that focal range?

I am thinking the only plus to those primes would be better bokeh, or am I being short sighted here?

I'm still learning this photography thing so apologies if my questions rankle.

<b>Canon Firmware Upgrades for the EOS-1D X and EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cameras Deliver Improved Creative Control and Convenience</b></p>

<p>Firmware Version 2 for the EOS-1D X is Based on Extensive User Input and Provides More Efficient Autofocus Performance in Low Light, Custom Controls, and Improved User-Programmed Functionality</p>
<p><b>MELVILLE, N.Y., October 22, 2013</b> – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announces improvements in the functionality and convenient operation of the EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera and the EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cinema camera through new firmware scheduled to be available starting in January 2014 and November 2013, respectively. Firmware enhancements for the EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera are designed to provide photographers with greater creative freedom and speed, especially in sectors such as sports, wedding, nature/wildlife, and journalism, which often contain rapidly changing action, sometimes in low-light environments. Service enhancements for the EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cinema camera improve lens performance, lens status display, metadata storage, and audio recording.</p>
<p>“Canon constantly strives to provide our customers with advanced and innovative technology in our products,” noted Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “We understand the daily life of photographers, we listen closely to what they have to say, and we use their feedback in our constant efforts to improve existing products and develop new ones. The latest Canon firmware for the flagship EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera provides better automation to help photographers fine-tune how the camera operates moment-by-moment so users can concentrate on creativity and success. Filmmakers have also requested improved functionality for the EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cinema camera, and its new update delivers.”</p>
<p><b>Improved Operability for the EOS-1D X</b></p>
<p>Developed as the ultimate Canon EOS camera, the EOS-1D X Digital SLR is designed with foresight that enables its performance to be periodically improved with new firmware upgrades, helping to ensure maximum long-term value for owners and users of the camera. These improvements are engineered to support and advance the evolving creative needs and business imperatives of professional photographers and committed high-end amateurs. The features provided by firmware version 2 are designed for more efficient automation that takes the task of changing settings away from the “heat of the moment” and enables photographers to concentrate on creativity and obtaining valuable shots. Firmware version 2 upgrades and operability additions include a total of 10 features that are now new or improved:</p>
<p><b>AF Performance with Moving Subjects</b> – For greater creative control, additional parameters have been added to AI Servo 2nd Image Priority, enabling users to adjust these settings for more accurate AF performance according to the situation at hand. Photographers can fine-tune the balance between prioritizing focus versus the framing rate for the second and subsequent shots in a burst.</p>
<p><b>Enhanced AI Servo AF Performance in Low Light Conditions</b> – The AI Servo focusing algorithm has been improved to allow more time for light sampling during AF activation prior to shutter release, enhancing AF performance in low-light situations. Additionally, initial AF control is now based on the new “+2 focus priority” setting of AI Servo 2nd Image Priority, which has higher distance measurement capabilities under low-light conditions. Upon full depression of the shutter button, settings from AI Servo 1st Image Priority take over and then settings from AI Servo 2nd Image Priority are applied on any subsequent images in the burst. This increases the probability that the first image in a burst sequence will be as sharp as possible.</p>
<p><b>Improved Acceleration/Deceleration Tracking Parameters</b> – To improve tracking performance of fast-moving subjects that fill the frame, additional parameters for acceleration/deceleration tracking in AI Servo AF have been added to provide photographers with more precise control when photographing rapidly moving subjects that accelerate or decelerate quickly or unexpectedly. In response to feedback from professional photographers, these new settings have been added to handle larger differences in speed (i.e., the rate of change in image magnification) compared to the previous firmware.</p>
<p><b>Selection of Initial AF Point While Shooting in 61-Point Auto Selection AF</b> – This new option in the AF Menu provides more continuity when switching to 61-Point Auto Selection AF from any other AF Point Selection mode. The option maintains the AF point selected from the previous Selection mode as a starting point for 61-Point Auto Selection AF. It also maintains the ability to change to a pre-programmed AF point when changing the Selection mode. This time-saving option is designed to help eliminate the need to stop and think, and helps photographers to customize their individual shooting style.</p>
<p><b>AF Point Switching According to Camera Orientation</b> – In addition to programming the EOS-1D X camera to automatically switch to a different AF point and area selection mode based on camera orientation, firmware version 2 adds the option of programming only the AF point according to camera orientation (horizontal, grip up and grip down). This new ability to select up to three different AF points according to camera orientation allows for greater customization of the camera to specific shooting styles.</p>
<p><b>Expanded Minimum Shutter Speed in Auto ISO</b> – In response to user feedback, this improved functionality in Auto ISO enables photographers to select a minimum shutter speed as high as 1/8000th of a second to freeze moving subjects.</p>
<p><b>Exposure Compensation in Auto ISO with Manual Mode Set</b> – This new function enables photographers to manually set a desired shutter speed and aperture, use Auto ISO to control the exposure, and use Exposure Compensation to adjust the exposure for challenging lighting conditions (e.g., a very dark or very bright background). This new function can be activated through the Quick Control Dial or by using the Main Dial while pressing the SET button.</p>
<p><b>Toggling Between Alternate Camera Settings</b> – EOS-1D X camera users can now toggle between three groups of camera settings instantly by pressing the shutter button, AE Lock button [*] or the AF-ON button. Selectable settings that can now be assigned to the AE Lock and AF-ON buttons via Custom Controls include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Currently selected AF point vs. pre-registered AF point</li>
<li>AI Servo AF configuration sets (Case 1 through Case 6)</li>
<li>One-Shot AF vs. AI Servo AF</li>
<li>Currently selected drive mode vs. 14 fps Super High Speed drive mode</li>
</ul>
<p>With these new options, photographers can reconfigure their EOS-1D X camera on the fly, while keeping their eye on the viewfinder to maintain concentration on the shot they are trying to get. For example, the camera could be set up for One-Shot AF and single shot drive mode on the shutter button, AI Servo AF in Case 1 with high-speed continuous drive mode on the AE Lock button, and AI Servo AF in Case 4 with super-high-speed 14 fps continuous drive mode on the AF-ON button.</p>
<p>Same Exposure for New Aperture in Manual Mode – This new firmware feature provides users with the ability to maintain consistent exposure levels in Manual mode when the aperture changes, for example when a photographer shoots at maximum aperture with a variable-aperture lens (such as the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto zoom) or when using a lens equipped with built-in extender (such as the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X). The feature gives users the option to have the camera adjust the shutter speed or the ISO to compensate for the aperture change.</p>
<p>Display Protected Images Only – Users can now page through protected images only via an option on the main dial. This feature already exists with rated images, and is an expansion of that capability.</p>
<p><b>Enhancements for the EOS-1D C</b></p>
<p>A versatile, self-contained 4K cinema camera as well as a robust still photography camera, the Canon EOS-1D C will also benefit from a new service update that further enhances the performance of this unique imaging device.</p>
<p><b>EF Lens Communication</b> – The new service update for the EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cinema camera will enable Canon EF-mount Cinema lenses to store lens metadata in the video recorded by the camera. Furthermore, Canon EF-mount Cinema lenses will be supported by Peripheral Illumination and Chromatic Aberration Correction functions, helping to improve overall image quality [1].</p>
<p><b>Audio Recording</b> – In response to user requests, audio on the EOS-1D C camera has also been enhanced. Currently audio recording is limited to a MIC input, but the forthcoming service update will permit selection of LINE or MIC input, allowing use of a wider variety of external audio sources.</p>
<p><b>New Firmware Release Schedules and Installation Procedures</b></p>
<p>Firmware version 2 for the EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera is scheduled to be posted on the Canon U.S.A. website in January 2014. Users will be able to download and install the new firmware on their own, or have it installed by an authorized Canon Factory Service Center. For more information please visit: <a href="http://www.usa.canon.com/eos1dxfirmware">www.usa.canon.com/eos1dxfirmware</a>.</p>

Magiclantern + Shutter fail on 60D

Hi,
one strange thing happened to me while travelling US. I have 60D with upgraded firmware to newest version (1.1.1) and I'm using magic lantern (1.1.1-ml-v2.3)
Everything worked fine up to the moment all my memory cards were full and I had to buy and use the new one (16GB SanDisc Extreme). After that camera started to behave very strange, sometimes it just won't trigger shutter, just lock up mirror and let is locked for 30s (I tried to "take a shot" without lens to see whats happening). And no file was added on the card (I was expecting at least the just black frame)

After restarting the camera few times and also removing the battery this behavior continued. Then I realized it could be software issue, because camera worked fine in life view mode (Av, Tv, P, M modes were not working). As the next step I tried to switch to another card, to see if it's not somehow card related. After putting full card WITH magic lantern files the camera went live again and everything worked fine. ???

When I switched the cards again, camera still worked fine (so no permanent issue), but I this situation happend 2-3 more times and every time using card with magic lantern helped to "unlock" the shutter. I also have to tell that only the new never used cards triggered this behavior.

FYI only - maybe might help someone.
Did it happened to someone else here?

Edit: added firmware versions

Which TS lens is better

Hi, I´m looking forward to welcome TS lens into my roaster around Christmas.
I would like to know your opinion, which one is better:
17/4 or 24/3.5 II?
From reviews I know that 24mm is incredible sharp, plus is also can take filters. But I would be aiming for something wider.
17mm is great lens to but what I can read is that is as not sharp to tht corners as 24mm. Some articles says that Lee anounced also filter system for this lens which can be also pretty interesting.

HELP for a Canadian Buyer

I am from Canada and here is my situation:

I just ordered the Canon 24-70 f2.8 ii from B and H during the Double Dip Rebate period and mailed the item to a US city just one hour south of me to avoid the expensive brokerage/shipping fees that would be charged for shipping to Canada.

My question then is, when I go to pick up my order from the Parcel Service company that I used and bring it back across the border, will I be charged additional taxes on my way back? I have tried to consult the information on the CBSA (Canadian Border Services Agency) website as well as the Cross-Border Tax, Duty, and Brokerage Fees, Demystified section on http://www.photoprice.ca/article/tax-duty-brokerage-demystified to see if I could find any clear answers, but I did not find any.

If anyone who is familiar with the issue could provide their insight on the matter, it would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

The 50L: double dip on BH and Amazon, ~$1,200

BH and Amazon have been offering "double dip" deals recently - an instant discount equal to the Canon mail-in rebate. Right now, the 50L is offered for $1,439,; there is a mail-in rebate of $180, and you get 4% reward points (BH only). This brings the BH price to around $1,200, assuming that the rebate will arrive. This is below the lowest price in the last 5 years, according to canonpricewatch.

EDIT: I could not resist.
