2nd Body... 1D IV or another 5D III

Hello all-

I posted a few weeks back about my first experience shooting college football and it appears I'll be doing quite a bit more of that as well as basketball and general PJ work. As of right now, I'm shooting on a gripped 5D III, a 16-35 II, a 70-200 II, and a nifty fifty.

CPS loaned me a second 5D III as well as their 400 IS II to shoot that last game, but as you may or may not know, these are evaluation loans and as such you can only "borrow" each item 1-2 times, depending on your level of membership. As such, I've decided without a doubt that I need another camera. In truth, I would prefer to cover football with 3, but we'll worry about that in due time. With all of this, keep in mind I will also be buying EITHER a 300 2.8 IS II OR a 400 2.8 IS 1.

So, the question becomes which one? As I need to sort this out fairly soon, I don't have a ton of time to save. Yes, I know the answer to this question is 1DX, but I can't do it right now. I'm between another 5D III, maintaining battery and control compatibility, or a 1D IV.

I love the 5D III, no real complaints. It's great at what it does, and honestly, it's not a half bad sports camera. If I get a third camera later next year, it will be a 5D III more likely than not. I did notice some shots missed due to having "only" 6 fps. The tracking though was largely fine. IQ I was happy with. I did some cropping, but not a ton with the 400. If anything, I could use to back off a bit.

This leads me to consider the 1D IV. I can pick one up in good shape for roughly the same price as a refurb 5d III + grip. I could get the newer 300 2.8 IS II and get slightly less reach than 400, while gaining fps. I expect tracking to be fine, metering fine, etc. After all, this was THE sports camera before 1DX, it's not all the sudden bad.

I've got a 1DX (I'm gonna hate myself) and 300 2.8 IS II coming in for my next game, shooting Teddy Bridgewater against UConn early November so I should get a feel for both the speed of the 1D-series and the difference in reach, should I go 5D III on a second camera and stick with 300.

Your thoughts on 5D III / 1D IV and on 400 ver I / 300 v II would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a ton!

Is there a market for an 8mp crop body with excellent iso performance?

I know the argument with full frame v. crop is that you have a larger sensor so the individual sensor "pixels" aren't as close together and that allows for larger pixels and better low light performance.

So if that is true... do you think that with all the in camera processing we have today that anyone would consider a crop sensor that has full frame low light capabilities at 6400 iso? 8mp is still a decent amount of data and would allow for some cropping, though not as much as a 20+ mp sensor in good light.

I think there are too many people who wouldn't be willing to pay $500 for a camera with ONLY 8 mp.

Canon EOS 1DX defective Mirror Boxes - Screen Splash - AF Lock-up

I work for a newspaper and we bought two Canon 1DX's to replace older equipment.

Both IDX's were defective. We returned one and sent the other to Canon. This will be the third time we're sending the 1DX back to Canon for the same reasons.

1. The mirror / screen gets small black specs in it. Some are clear others look like random shaped dark pieces of broken black glass.

2. The Auto Focus stops working. First we notice a lack of focus, then the lenses hunts a lot, then it does not focus at all.

The Canon 1DX we bought had a white "A" in the battery compartment. We were told it was adjusted by Canon after it was made so all of the above would not happen.

When we sent it in the first time it was returned with a white dot next to the "A" but the same thing happened again. And again, splash in the screen and a lack of focus all the same things happend after only a few shots.

We sent the 1DX back to Canon again and it was returned saying the "MIRROR BOX" was replaced. After a few 100 shots, we were all amazed that this happened again the very same way.

The Camera has been to Canon so much time that we can't return it to the retailer and now it's back with Canon for a 3rd time. If Canon fixed this after is was manufactured, this is really the 4th time Canon is fixing the same issue not the third.

We did some research and now we see there are many people all over the world with the same issues with the 1DX having defects or defective AF and this oil splash.

Are there others out there with this same issue? Have you had to have your new 1DX fixed 3 or 4 times?

Canon cannot seem to fix this issue and based on a Google we did, the 1DX seems to be defective in design itself. One note I read said something about oil being the issue and another about broken plastic.

This seems never ending :(

17-40mm L or 24-105mm L for crop sensor 20D?

Hello,
I currently shoot a Canon 20D with the kit lenses (18-55 and 55-250 IS), I also use the 100-300 4.5-5.6. I'm tired of poor build quality and I just feel an upgrade would be nice. I shoot a lot of trucks / heavy vehicles, street photography and landscape. I use the 18-55 mostly because its wide (hardly use the zooms). I'd like to upgrade to some versatile L glass that will suit my needs and fit in with my budget of around $700-$900 (happy to shop at camparadise). I was thinking the 24-105 f/4 IS. I then remembered I don't own a FF body so 24mm isn't great for wide trucks and landscapes on a 20D. So maybe a 17-40 f/4? Will the lack of IS be that bad at 40mm? Are there any other options?

Why was Godox first to think of this?

So Godox have beaten everyone to the punch with the release of their Godox V850 speedlite with a rechargeable Li-Ion battery.

Read more about it here -

http://flashhavoc.com/godox-v850-lithium-flash/

Why did no one else ever think to do this years ago? Why did it take so long? Is there some engineering difficulty they had to overcome? Or was it a marketing thing?

Makes no bloody sense to me why we have to use AA batteries in our Canon or Nikon flashes in this day and age.

Discuss.

Is this rude or just customer apathy?

So I get contacted earlier in the week to photograph a flag racing event. I don't have anything planned so I say yes. Saturday... check, time... check... they'll send me the details later about where. The event is weather dependent so I'm not writing IOU's at the strip club and they said they would know by Friday if they were going to cancel for weather.

The email doesn't come... I contact the secretary of the organization and she says, "It will come this afternoon." It didn't. I'm still doing my homework... google (learning where the event is and the types of events that are going to be held)... facebook (making sure this is a real organization and not a robbery)... Flickr (getting an idea of what images and what angles are compelling).

So today I touch base and I'm told they are deliberating on postponing, cancelling, or having the event at another venue. I request, "Keep me in the loop."

11:30p.m. as I write and I still haven't received word. I know it has been cancelled... they indicated so on their Facebook page... but am out really out of line expecting a call, text, email, etc. indicating that it was cancelled?

So does this happen to anyone else? Is it the customers who don't want to break bad news? I'm not that annoyed... I now have a weekend day free to do whatever I want... but I still can't help but be annoyed.

70D Diagonal Image Processing (DIP) Defect

I seem to have made a mistake. I bought a 70D.
I mostly photograph birds with a 500mm lens and 1/500 sec exposure or faster, formerly with 5D Mk II with no sign of this problem. Normally an out-of-focus point should degenerate to a circle representing the round lens aperture (see honeyeater pic). However, with the 70D, a large proportion of the images develop a diagonal streaking in the bg.(subsequent pics). It appears that part of the image is isolated (face recognition/image stabilization ??) and inserted into a replicated bg. In one instance the bird's beak was replicated, in a 1/750 second shot. This renders the camera unfit for lf lenses. People awaiting the release of a 7D Mk II should note this, for unless rectified it could perhaps be found also in that camera.

It could be that the DIP defect only occurs with long focal length lenses. It has never happened with over 9000 photos using the 5D Mk II with 500mm but has happened with about 1 in 5 of 800 shots with this lens on the 70D. I have not used the 70D yet with shorter fl lenses.

Should you hear of the matter or its resolution please log it here. I will do the same after I've returned the camera to Canon for evaluation.

Two focusing squares suddenly seen in 5D Mk III screen -- advice needed

Colleagues: I was in the middle of a shoot last night: simple circumstances, no trauma to camera, just a simple, not very physical event. Shooting 5DMkIII and my 70-200 II, on autofocus, not manual. Used this lens/camera setup a zillion times. I use "1/2 press shutter" focusing; I do not use back-button focusing. I was using the smallest focusing target, one square. Suddenly one square stayed highlighted (in black) towards the left of the viewfinder. The other single-point that I was manipulating continued to work. The camera focused on the movable square, NOT the single black square. I tried everything to fix this: turned camera off and on, checked all the switches on the lens, dismounted/remounted lens. Black square stayed put. I panicked. Finally I did the 'system reset' on the camera, returning all settings to the original, 'out of box' tabula rasa state. The black box disappeared, and now the screen is normal. Does anyone know what happened? I am quite worried--I use this about 6-7 days a week and don't deal with malfunctions well. Any advice gratefully received. Thank you for your time in reading this.

Focus Peaking for Canon 5D3

Hi Guys,

Sorry if this has been discussed before but after using a focus peaking feature on my Fuji camera's I really would enjoy this feature with my 5D3 and Zeiss lenses. It really makes manuallly focusing so much easier IMO.

I would imagine that Magic Lantern has offered this but wondered if anyone is using ML on a regular basis with a 5D3 for stills and what do you/they think of it.

Thanks again,
Markoe

Good or lucky copy of the 50L?

Today I received my copy of the 50L and I was very impressed with it's sharpness. Like all of you may know, this lens has a reputation for back-focusing. Fortunately for me though, my copy seems to be tack sharp. Something I'd like to know is: Does Canon fix issues as they go and continue to make production of that same exact lens with these improvements or do they leave it alone until a new model undergoes production? I'm very satisfied with the fact that I received a good copy, or Canon has fixed this problem.

Also, this is my first f/1.2 lens and the DOF is indeed extremely delicate, but not as tough to shoot as many say.

My first concept video....

I finished this a couple of months ago...
I'm not proud of it, because it could have been 100X better than it is...
Nonetheless, I learned a lot and I hope that I don't make the same mistakes that I made on this video on the next project.

Again, its my first concept video and I did it for a couple that got married on June 9, 2013.

Constructive criticism welcome.
