Can u store more than 3 user defined picture styles in 5D mk ii?

Hello all,

Can u store more than 3 user defined picture styles in 5D mk ii?
Read from Magic Lantern forum somewhere that this is not possible/dangerous for now.
Any workaround other than carrying a laptop to upload the picture style files to camera?
I suppose I can do it in post with raw capture but if I can get the effect I want in jpg, I save a lot of
post processing time :)
PS: I shoot raw+jpg all the time.
Thanks! John

How tightly do you frame your shots & and do you crop?

Some time ago, I've been told by an alleged pro photog that real photogs don't crop, or at least only do minor angle correction. I am wondering if this is true, or it is an old-school fairy tale from the analog age that falls into the category "real photogs don't use auto iso and only shoot in full m".

I've gotten much better framing my shots, but I wonder if squeezing the last pixels out of your camera makes sense all the time. If I have a hard time framing a wildlife shot just right to get max. resolution, the Nikon guy next to me just shoots 24 or 36 mp and then crops some, gaining flexibility (aspect ratio, different framing) while probably not loosing much iq for usual print/screen sizes.

When shooting raw stock you cannot crop, or with 1000+ shots of an event you of course don't want to crop some pixels from every one - so a 100% vf (which my 6d doesn't have) makes sense in these cases. But I also have recently experienced some situations where a couple of pixels to one side could have really helped in postprocessing, but I always have this nagging feeling that leaving more space around a subject simply isn't considered "proper".

Thus the question: How do you do it - better safe than sorry, or go for the full "no cropping, please" experience?

Anyone tried the Hahnel Extreme Li-ion batteries?

I was looking at prices of (genuine) Canon LP-E6 batteries and stumbled across the Hahnel HLX-E6. Slightly cheaper than the Canon and if you believe the claims gives around 25% more shots from a charge compared to the Canon.

Don't know what the camera will report regarding a serial number or performance but might be worth checking out. (Ask yourself how you coped prior to having that info available and I expect you'll say "just fine!")

Anyone been using the Hahnel?

http://www.hahnel.ie/index.cfm/action/batterysearch/pid/853

Update - I've e-mailed them to see if a 5D3 will register a serial number and give accurate recharge performance data. Will keep you posted.

Irritating photography advice

I get irritated when I am told that -

1. f/4 lenses are all you need - f/2.8 or faster is just a waste of money;
2. hobbyists don't need two camera bodies - one is all that you require;
3. you no longer need a tripod - the high ISO performance takes care of everything;
4. you no longer need graduated filters;
5. anyone with too much gear is a collector and not a photographer;
6. you don't need to spend $$$ on good quality filters - any cheap filter will do the same job, equally good;
7. you can shoot a wedding with an iPhone;
8. a camera is all about the sensor;
9. more MP = better photos;
10. anyone shooting in TV/AV mode doesn't understand how to expose correctly;
11. Auto-ISO is for noobs

I got three from the above list earlier today ... grrr!

Anything that I have missed?

My Showreel

Hey guys,

as my Timelapse showreel was well received I thought I'd share my actual showreel.

Which you can find on here: https://vimeo.com/76289417

Most shots done with a 5D mark III, a few bird close ups with the 600D.
Generally L lenses used, ranging from 16-35mm, 50mm f/1.2, 24-105mm, 100-400mm, 300mm f/4.
I often use a Glidecam, a lot of shots handheld or on tripod.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Powershot D20 replacement / update?

Just wondering if anyone as heard anything regarding a update for the Powershot D20? I appreciate that it's a bit specialist, but I'm interested to find out if anyone truly believes that Canon wil be releasing an update to this underwater camera next year, as I have a bit of a diving holiday planned for mid next year and don't really want to fork out the >£1K for a DSLR case or risk my 7D getting ful of fish. At the moment, it seems that the Panasonic FT5 and Olympus TG-2 are surging ahead in terms of underwater colour rendering and (Panasonic) in MP and scoring well in reviews, but I would rather keep with Canon.

cheers,

Grant :-)

Sell my 85L for these two lenses?

As much as I adore my 85L, it has its downfalls. It's friggin heavy. Its AF can be tragically slow. And it is hard to work with with that paper thin dof.
I've been thinking of selling my 85L, and with that money buying an 85 1.8 AND a 35L...if I can make the prices work. (I'm not at all saying that the 35L would somehow be comparable to the 85L... I've simply always wanted the 35L.)

What do you think? Would this be wise to exchange the 85L for these two lenses, or do you think I'd have sellers remorse? Is the 85 1.8 a decent alternative (I've heard it's quicker)?

New Zeiss 55 f/1.4 Distagon

We’re told that the new Zeiss 55 f/1.4 will be part of the new “Otus” family and will appear for preorder some time in the next 24 hours. This lens is the start of a new family of lenses from Zeiss that will set the gold standard of optical quality.

The price for this new lens is apparently $4000 and is manual focus. The lens will be available on November 11, 2013.

kenko mc4 1.4 vs kenko pro 1.4 vs sigma 1.4

Hey everyone!
I am wondering if any of you have tried both of these teleconverters and sees noticeable difference in image quality , faster autofocus etc. Because I already have the mc4 and wonder if I should upgrade to the pro one ( I am (would be) using it with sigma 120-300 os on a 6d for sports) or if the sigma one is better than these 2 and should buy this one instead. I wouldn't really use it for nighttime sports since f4 is pretty slow and would even need to stop lower to get better IQ..
Thank you!

Long exposure Portrait with second curtain Flash - Advice.

Hi All

I have recently done a portrait shoot with the city lights as a background at night. The attached shot was a 10 Sec exposure on a canon 6D with a Canon 430EXii mounted on top. The Flash was on second curtain. If you look closely at the picture the models arm is ghost like. How do I overcome this problem. Was my flash not powerful enough to over power the 10Sec exposure? Would it help if I took the flash off camera and triggered it closer to the model? Or should I position the model away from bright background light.
Thanks for your help and thoughts

EF 50 f/1.8 IS USM

We’re told that a new EF 50mm f/1.8 IS USM is ready for release, but may not happen until Q1 of 2014.

The lens would be in line with the new 24,28 & 35mm IS lenses. Pricing would be more than the current EF 50 f/1.4 USM it would be replacing. However, Canon has noticed that the pricing on the 3 mentioned lenses at launch was too high and lead to poor initial sales numbers. Since the lenses have been price dropped, they are selling better.

Help needed: 24-105 f4 L softness and very stiff lens hood mount

Hi,

I recently bought a 6D+24-105 Kit as an replacement for my ancient 400d. While generally being very pleased with this gear I'm a bit concerned about the softness of the lens (compared to my 70-300L) and about the rather stiff lens hood mount wich already produced some scratches in the plastic. What are your experiences with this lens (compared to the photos attached)? Do you think I should have a little chat with Canon about this?

p.s. the attached photos were made after afma:

(1) 24-105: 24mm, f4
(2) 24-105: 105mm, f4
(3) 70-300: 70mm f4

br,

roedi

Advice on low light indoor sports photo's

dto8.jpg

Hi,

I've taken this picture at a judo tournament using a Canon 50D with a Canon 24-70 f/2.8 (mark I). I had to shoot at ISO 3200 because of the bad light. This adds a lot of noise to the picture.

I'm mainly shooting football (a.k.a. soccer) and judo pictures. I'm thinking of buying the Canon 70D. I hope the noise will be less at higher ISO values. I also like the fact that it's faster than the 50D.

I would like to hear from you if the 70D is a big improvement coming from the 50D or that I'm better of buying a lens with a bigger aperture.

Thank you,

Hans

24-70ii @MFD quality concerns. Please help

Hello,
I am new as a member to canon rumors though I've frequented the site for at least a year now.. Glad to be an official member with this great group of knowledgable and talented photographers! I was wondering if anyone who owns the canon 24-70 ii could post photos taken at MFD of something with some detail(maybe at different focal lengths even?)... I searched the site and couldn't find anything so my apologies if this was already covered. I am interested in this lens but I read on some site it has dismal resolution at MFD @2.8. Though that's hard to believe I nonetheless would love to see some real world photos... I find myself shooting wide open often enough at close distances that the result will carry heavy weight in my decision to buy or not. Thanks in advance :)

Studio lighting

Im setting up a studio in Melbourne, Australia - anyone got any thoughts on lighting options/brands - was thinking Profoto strobes or possibly Kino Flo led banks or a mixture of both. I shoot mainly portrait/headshots and fashion.

I've included a photo of the space. also thinking of constructing a cyc in this space.

1DX Battery Drain?

I had posted this in another thread, but didn't weant to take over the htread, so I thought I'd ask the 1DX owners in this htread if the follow scenarios are good, bad, or just pain ugly? My 1 year old batteries seem to be draining quite rapidly- at least it seems that way-

I'm a landscape shooter mostly- taking other shots at rendom, but mostly landscape- I shoot on tripod, with mirror lockup and 10 second timer to allow rickety-ish tripd to settle down (I made mistake of buying a vanguard tripod- now I have tol ive with wobbly tripod till I get a real tripod) and I don't use live view except for shots that I can't see through the viewfinder becuase camera is too close to ground, or at wierd angle- these liveview shots make up around 18/14 of my shots, but I am quick to turn it off and resume viewfinder viewing to preserve charge on batteries-

I went out today and shot exactly 100 shots, in dark conditions that required long exposures from 20 seconds to 30 seconds dependign on how dark (it's very overcast, and I'm in the deep woods, shooting streams and foliage right now) I had a freshly charged battery i nthe camera- I get home, check the battry indicator, and lo and behold, it's down to 3/4 already- I'm assuming if I had shot another 100, I'd be down to aroudn 1/2 battery charge left at that rate-

This just seems like an aweful quick discharge of the battery to me? Or is this pretty much on par with other folk's experience? I remember taking my canon 7D out for days on end and shootign hte same way, mirror lockup, 10 secodn timer, live view roguhly 1/4 of the time- and coudl get several days of shooting?- I know hte 1DX uses more juice, but that much more?

Scratches on inner barrel of lens

I had a hair that was stuck in between the outer and inner barrel of my new 24-70 f/2.8 II. Trying to remove it with my finger proved insufficient. I got some tweezers and managed to grab the hair and pull it out.

However, using the tweezers I noticed I made some very small (tiny) scratches on the inner lens barrel.

Is this cause for concern now or down the road?
