Looking for opinions on a new lens. Zoom vs Prime.

Hi Everyone,
So I know the majority of you probably get sick of these topics, but with that said I just wanted to see what the lot of you thought about my situation.
So here it is if you are interested.
I currently Shoot with a 5d mark 3 with the following setup. 24-105,100mm L, canon 50 1.4, canon 85mm 1.8, and 17-40 f4. I also have a 430 ex mark II. I have been doing a handful of weddings and have a a fair amount coming up and was flirting with the idea of adding a new lens to the arsenal. I have about $1500 and what I was considering was selling the 24-105 to get the 24-70 2.8 mark II, or keeping the 24-105 and getting the sigma 35 1.4 and upgrading my speedlight to the 600. I really like fast glass, not only for its low light capability, but just as much so for the DOF. The 24-105 has treated me well as most of the wedding I do are outside, but that may change. The 24-70 looks amazing, but Im loving the 35 1.4, sigma has made a monster. I am also eyeing the 70-200 2.8 II, but that a different day.
So any feedback?
Thanks in advance.

LENs and Camera in a warm/high temp room

Hey all I pit up a shelf under my stairs where I have a small room and space under the stairs.

in this area I already have my network/server room. In that I mean server/network gear full rack. This area is very warm.

I wanted to see what people thought about this space for storing my lenses and bodies when not in use.

I'm concerned that the lenses might dry out something

Upgrade: aps-c or full frame

I know it's been beaten almost to death...

I'm looking to upgrade my 30D. Are the differences between the IQ and noise of the 7D, 70D, and 6D when used in good light that great? I'm trying to be cognizant of price-performance; not sure if the performance of a 5D Mark III would be 'worth' the 2-3 times jump in retail price.

Thanks.

Lens advice for New York City

My wife is running the New York City Marathon this year and we are taking our first trip to the city along with my son (17) and daughter (13). We arrive November 1 and leave November 4 - it will be a short trip but the kids will be missing 2 days of school. We don't have specific plans yet but I imagine a ferry tour will be on the agenda along with some of the bigger attractions (Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Grand Central, etc.) I am looking for advice on what focal lengths I should take to capture our trip.

For cameras I have: 7D, EOS M (and EF adapter), and a S100.
My lenses are: EF 70-200mm 2.8 IS II, EF 50mm 1.8, EF-S 18-135mm, EF-M 22mm

With my son in college next year, we are on a pretty tight budget but I have considered purchasing one of the following: EF-M 18-55mm, EF-M 11-22mm, or Sigma 50mm 1.4.

I am leaning heavily toward leaving my 7D and 70-200 at home. If I were to rely solely on the M and the S100, do I need 2 or 3 lenses and what should they be? Any other advice also appreciated.

Thank you!

Milky Way near the moon?

Would it be too hard to get the Milky Way if it's near the moon? :(
I'm gonna be in an extremely dark and relatively high location (In Morgan Hill if anyone knows where that is or cares to know). The moon is going to be pretty close to the Milky Way's location so I'm just wonder, as it's my first time attempting to capture it, will it be too difficult or too bright to get it?
I'm using a 5D Mk III with a 50mm 1.4, but may borrow my friend's 24-70 2.8 Mk I if that helps at all.
Around 1 - 3AM also.

Canon + phone manufacturer collaboration

Anybody knows if Canon + phone manufacturer collaboration? I'd be happy to have a smartphone with 1/1.7 camera sensor, full manual exposure, 3X to 5X zoom and shoots RAW. That'd be awesome. I just hope they'll be able to maintain the size of an IPhone (though I don't mind the size of a Samsung Note). S120 + IPhone features? Possible?

Canon 300mm f2.8is II with 2.0x teleconverter III

I previously owned a 300 f2.8is version I and absolutely loved that lens. Razor sharp, very versatile, small and light (relatively) and worked very well with a 1.4x TC. The one down-side is that it was very SOFT with a 2.0x TC.

I ended up selling this lens to fund a 500 f4 is Version I. I have been pretty happy with this lens for the most part, however it does not perform super well with TC's from both an IQ standpoint as well as an AF speed standpoint. I find that I almost exclusively use this lens without TC's to produce images I am consistently happy with.

I really miss my 300 2.8, and have been considering the newer version II for quite some time. I would need to sell my 500 to afford one so I thought I would ask for feedback from those who own the 300 Version II and have used it with a 2.0x converter Version III. The lens comparison tool from TheDigitalPicture indicates that this lens does quite remarkably with a 2.0x TC. So well to my eye that I am thinking it would be a nice replacement for my 500 f4 Version I, and give me the 300/420mm that I so often miss. Has anyone used this 300+2.0 combo? How do the images look? How snappy is the AF? Compared to the 500f4is? Any feedback is appreciated.

Happy Shooting,

400mm f2.8L IS II or 600mm f4L IS II?

At the moment I have both of these lenses, and they are both extraordinary. But I'm not a a pro and it is a lot of money, so my common sense tells me to just keep one. But which one?

I do sports, wildlife and birds. And I also use the 1.4xIII and 2xIII extendres. Well, I don't use the 2xIII on the 600mm, because of the reduced AF functionality and 1200mm is difficult for anything but fairly stationary objects.

So, what would your reasoning and decision be, if you had both, but could only keep one?

Please explain how multi-group ettl preflash works?

I know what ettl2 is and what the preflash does in general, what I'd like to understand is how multiple groups work.

* Is it that every group does successive pre-flashes on their own so that the camera can determine what ettl ambient/flash ratio to set?

* Is this also the reason why pre-2012 don't work in group mode as they are only able to meter two pre-flashes (a:b and c) and rt requires up to five (a-e)? However, even if so Canon could at least have made it possible to use groups a+b in ettl and d-e in m flash mode (not to bash Canon, just for my understanding of the system)?

Suggestions for hot air balloon festival

Going to a hot air balloon festival next weekend and looking for suggestions on what lens to bring. I believe the event does not permit backpacks, so will likely only be able to bring 1. Would you go wide-angle (like a 17-40), all-around (24-105), or tele (70-300)? Or possibly a prime like 85? Appreciate any advice and shooting tips anyone can provide.

Finally getting some Eneloops, but will my old charger work?

So I bought this set of rechargeable batteries last year -

http://www.hhgregg.com/energizer-nimh-aa-and-nimh-aaa-battery-charger/item/CHVCMWB4

and they worked more than well enough in my 430 ex ii and my 580 ex ii. But they are finally not holding much of a charge and I know it is time to move into the big leagues with Eneloop.

I'm cheap... I know it... and while I have a ton of cash invested in gear, if I can save $4 by not having to buy an Eneloop branded recharging station, that is exactly what I will do.

So will there be a performance drop off? Will the voltage overheat the batteries and reduce their lifespan? Should I just bite the bullet and not worry so much about $4?

Thanks a bunch.
