About to drop some $$$ again...lol

Ok, so, often you see me posting here right before i make purchases, just to get swome feedback and thoughts on (call it me checkin myself before I wreck myself!)

The first item I am pretty sure on, but would love to know how others who may own it feel - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/221063-REG/Tamrac_69401_694_LP4_Rolling_Strongbox.html

I am currently using the thinktank streetwalker harddrive...it's an awesome bag but once i grabbed my second camera body, yeah, not enough space. I picked up a smaller shoulder bag to carry the excess gear, but, it is kind of a pain in the butt especially if i am also bringing lightstands or other lighting gear. A larger bag has been on my mind for a while, and for this it's kind of difficult, because most are trying to make their bags and roller case carry on friendly - down the line carry on friendly may be an issue, but for now, its all about getting as much gear in one bag as I can - from the looks of the LP4 strongbox, that should fit all i got plus give me room to grow. Any of you own this bag, it's pricey (which hell, it's gonna carry and protect a bunch of gear so the price isn't what worries me, it's how rugged this bag is, how well it will both carry and protect that i am considering)

70D or 70-300L

Hi All, I have the venerable 40D. My longest lens is a 200 2.8L version 1. I sometimes shoot planes from a distance and often wish for more focal length and end up cropping fairly heavily. I've been considering the 70-300L for some time in order to get "closer" to my target. But now I'm thinking that the 70D with twice the megapixel count might allow me top crop more and therefore give me better IQ.

Which would be the better option:

70D with twice as many pix on target,

OR

70-300L with greater focal length

Opinions? GO...

On Sensor Phase Detection - Depth Map possible?

with the new 70D sensor i wonder if it is possible to extract usefull depth information for a depth map from the sensor?

if i get it right EVERY photosite on the 70D sensor is recording phase detection?

im coming from 3D graphics and it was my dream for years to get depth information from a camera sensor. so i would have some kind of Z-BUFFER information for postprocessing.

that z-buffer could be used to do much better DOF in post processing (with PS for example).

im not asking if the 70D is recording this info... just if it is possible with this technology. :)

5d mark III external monitor, problems?

Hi guys, so I'm looking at buying a new external monitor for my 5D Mark 3 listed at the bottom

Currently I am running the firmware version 1.1.3 and cannot upgrade because I use magic lantern for work (I know risky).

The questions that I have are:

1) If I get an external monitor and I go and press record in H.264 movie mode is there a delay from the camera to the external monitor or does it instantly record without turning the external screen off and on?

2) What other issues have been experienced with external monitors that should be known?

3) Is there better options for a monitor in the $200 price range?

I figured Canon rumors is the best place to ask because you guys know much more about cameras than I ever will and I trust your opinions and feedback.

Again thank you, thank you, thank you very much! :D

Here is the monitor that I am looking to buy:

Sports Shooting Options?

I currently have the 6D and T2i! I really have been liking the center AF point on the 6D for sports as it is worlds ahead of my T2i. I have been using the 24-105 and really do not have any telephoto. I'm really stumped as it only has an F4 aperture and indoor sports such as volleyball require shutter speeds of 1/800 and above! Plus, outdoor football requires some sort of telephoto lens. (Kind of just getting stuff for my school's photoclub and yearbook)

Here are some of the options, and I would like your opinions:
6D+Tamron 70-200 V2
Second hand 7D (Getting to around $300-500 in my area! :o) and Canon 70-200 MK I
6D+135mm F2 + 70-300 (Sigma's new one coming soon?) 135mm is a great focal length for all of my indoor sports, and 70-300 wouldn't be too bad for football as the field is really nicely lit
7D+85mm F1.8+70-300mm?

Thanks guys!

Whitewater kayaking sequence

This is my first post here. I recently took some pictures at a local whitewater kayak slalom race. I am posting a series of 4 shots with two ideas in mind. I am hoping that each photo can stand on its own and that in a series, they can tell a story. I would appreciate feedback on these two points.

The story is the athlete negotiating a slalom gate during a whitewater race. The boater approaches the gate as he paddles across the current as it pushes him downstream. He must then paddle upstream through the gate then turn and move downstream to the next gate.

Question for owners of EF 24-105mm who also acquired EF 24-70mm II

Hi there.

I'm pretty sure there are people here who had a 24-105mm before and bought the 24-70mm II. I have some questions:

1) Does it make sense to own both lenses (in case it will be difficult to sell the 24-105mm). I also have the 100mm f2.8L Macro for little subjects.
2) If you sold the 24-105mm, did you miss it later on?

At the present my 24-105mm has 98% utilization rate on the 5D3 because it's the only one I have, it's a versatile general purpose lens. But I *want* better with the 24-70mm II despite the lack of IS (I can get around that). Not need. Want! (haha).

I heard that the 24-70 II at f/4 gives much better image quality than the 24-105mm at f/5.6. Is this true?

I am not a professional photographer, just a serious amateur who loves cameras, pictures, and photography for more than 30 years.

Thank you!

Hurraaah! More 1D X problems

Well, after selling my 7D and 5D Mark III to purchase a 1D X to act as my workhorse I have encountered a minor setback in my journey to become some sort of 'artist' or whatever photographers are these days.

I purchased my 1D-X and there was nothing wrong with it, as is to be expected. When the announcement was made that some 1D-X and 1D-C models suffered from a possible issue due to lack of lubricant [Or whatever it was] I was one of the first to have mine 'fixed' [First in Australia at least].

I have had my camera back for a while and only after I get my camera fixed is there now a nice progressive build up of specks in the top left corner of the viewfinder. Since getting my camera back I have been restricted to using only one lens [L Series] so no dirt of grime could have entered while I was changing lenses.

Any advice fellow 1D-X users? [Other than to get it cleaned/ checked up]. Also, anyone else have this happen to their 1D?

Silent Mode - 5D Mkiii

Is there a way, workaround or a piece if equipment ( cable release etc ) that will allow me to shoot in silent mode with the timer ?

I shoot AEB HDR with the timer on so that the entire sequence will be shot with one shutter press. I love this feature on the MK3, however it would also be great to do this while taking advantage of the silent mode which can work to reduce mirror slap ?

Any thoughts ?
Cheers.

How to fix zoom creep on EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens?

I just bought a used EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens.

I got a really good deal because I was able to bid down the price as there was dust in the front barrel and because the lens exhibited noticeable zoom creep. Other than that, the lens is in perfect optical and cosmetic condition.

Basically, I intend to clean the dust out by following this video:

Canon 17-55

and I figure that if I am already going to be opening up the lens, I can try to fix the zoom creep as well.

I tried finding information about this particular lens, but I was not able to find much that was helpful.

Does anyone know how to fix the zoom creep on this lens, or can you point me to a resource somewhere? I am comfortable ordering parts if I need to.

P.S. I know there are lensband/rubberband solutions, but at this moment, I'm not interested in those.

Would this be an upgrade?

I own a 7D, Canon 70-200 f/4L non-IS, and a 300mm f/4L non-IS.

I like the lenses, but I've been considering something with more reach for birding.

I've read some about the Sigma 50-500mm, and am wondering if people would consider that an upgrade, or if there are other options. I'm fine with prime lenses, but would have a $1500 price ceiling.

Thoughts?

Guess who! :)

Shots taken of a relatively famous person. I will be very impressed if anyone can guess who she is. Hint: the green chroma sort of shows her fame.
Photos taken by 5d3 and 85mm on a movie set which i am cinematographer of.

Is it Genuine? Canon LP-E6 Battery

[size=14pt][size=12pt]So I got bought a spare Canon LP-E6 off ebay, seemed legit. He had 3 from 60d cameras.
The guy made up some excuse that the 'genuine' batteries that he had were stolen. I got this 'replacement' at his expense.

After the excuse email and the receipt that was in the package, I am having serious doubts if it's genuine and worried about using it.

Is There Such Thing As a "Best" Normal Lens for Crop?

I was pretty psyched about my Sigma 30 1.4 Art, but got some wild purple streaks in some pics so you fail.
My telephoto lenses are the ultra flawless 100 2.0 and 200 2.8 II.
Is there such thing as a best normal lens (prime or zoom) for crop? I usually don't need to go overly wide, but just a great general purpose (non-sports) lens that'll do it most the best.
The Canon 24 2.8 IS is currently loosely at the top of the list, but maybe just deal with the size of the 17-55? 15-85? 35 2.0?
Thanks.

Canon behavior at launching new products

As I have an actual problem with my new Camera, I wonder, if Canon will act as it does at releasing the 70D.

Announcing the Camera, delivering a few Cameras to professional Canon stores after some month of being announced - and delivering it to other stores after an long "announcment time".
For me, this is just to keep the price high by making the product rare.

My japanese Girlfriends think, that this will be done by all new "highlights" from Canon to milk us custoerms as much as possible.
Maybe the 7D2 and an big MP Camera will be announced and released 2-3 month later and kept rare 6month. Rumored in by them. But who knows if this won´t be true?

What do you think?

6D Temporary Battery Drain 'Work Around'

Using your Canon 'BG-E13' battery grip. (Other Grips might also work similarly)

Turn your Battery Tray latch to the open/remove position

Place a sturdy rubber band around the battery tray to keep the tray from falling out

The battery is now disconnected....No battery drain whatsoever.

=========================

I also now leave my camera switched on and use the battery tray latch as my on/off for everything.

After a few times using the 'latch as a switch, it becomes routine and always ready to take pictures

Kent Rockwell on 1DX and 5D3

Hi,

I know what you probably don't like Kent but before bashing him, let check his writing here
about 1Dx and 5D3:

My 5D Mark III is about a half-stop faster at any given ISO setting than my 1D X.

In other words, at any given ISO, my 5D Mark III gives the same image with a half-stop less exposure. In other other words, my 5D Mark III actually runs at a half-stop higher ISO than marked, or my 1D X is actually running a half-stop slower than marked, or somewhere in between.

It's common for camera makers to cheat a little here, since Canon needs to make the 1D X look like it has better high ISO performance than the 5D Mark III. In this case, it's stacked the deck a little, since when anyone compares at the same indicated ISOs, the 1D X appear to have a half-stop advantage since it's really only operating at a half-stop less ISO than the 5D Mark III at any given ISO. When comparing images, you won't notice unless you shoot at the same manual exposure, in which case my 1D X is a little darker than my 5D Mark III, or if you get both to match, you'll notice that your 5D Mark III only needed about a half-stop less exposure.
src: http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/comparisons/5d-mkiii-vs-1dx.htm

Can someone check if this is true?

Forum posts on front page - suggestion

Just a thought - but would it be worth while creating a new group of post topics on the Canon rumors front page that picks up the most popular topics overall - off the top of my head, I'm thinking 'show your bird portraits', 'post your best landscapes', 'show your HDR images' as perennially popular topic threads which have gone to many many pages, and continually attract new posts. I guess once a thread reaches, say, 20 pages it would be worth adding to the list.

This would have the dual advantage of making these popular threads easy to access, and freeing up slots in the '10 most recent threads' list, which is normally about as far as I get ;).

An alternative, given the theme of the most popular threads, would be to create a second category of threads shown on the front page, namely those devoted to people wishing to share their photographs...
