Canon 70D vs Nikon D7100 Epic Shootout

As promised on my one of my other threads about the 70D (yes the one that got ugly) here are my findings about both cameras. I appreciate all of your inputs and any suggestions for future improvements are welcome, enjoy!

The 70D's moire & low light focusing are it's weak points. Wish it had a head phone jack, but other than that....holy wow, the 70D is a GREAT camera.

I wonder what other are shooting. I shot almost only JPEGs, mostly I'm happy with the quality, even though I encountered problems with some scenes, where I got some nasty effects, especially in large areas with small color graduation (night sky...). I tried RAW for some of these shoots, but somehow it didn't help that much; probably it has to do with the fact, that my skills at RAW processing are rather limited.

<p><strong>More from Sigma?

</strong>We’ve been told to expect an announcement some time in 2013 for a 24-105mm f/4 OS lens from Sigma.</p>

Smoking flash

I was shooting an event yesterday, and there were the typical crowds of people taking photos with phones, compacts and DSLR's. At one point during an indoor part of the event, something caught my eye about a guy taking photos next to me. I'm not sure if it was a weird spread of the light from his flash or what, but something made me watch him take the next shot. He was shooting with a rebel of some sort, and as the internal flash fired again, a very noticeable amount of smoke came out of it.

He was wearing a baseball cap, and that was pushing the spring loaded flash back almost home, yet the flash still fired - presumably at full power due to ETTL and minimal subject illumination, and it was mostly projected into a confined black plastic area. I made sure to tell him what happened, and he then sniffed the flash and confirmed it smelt of burning. The flash itself looked fine from my half second glance at it, and I didn't have time to look in the area which I guess was burning.

I know using a crop camera in auto mode while wearing a baseball cap isn't something everyone does, but it can't be too uncommon. It wasn't hot either (inside a tent at about 15 to 20 degrees). If any Canon engineers read this, how about fitting a simple position sensor to detect if the flash is fully up, and only then allow the flash to fire?

A butterfly is born.

Hi, So this one shrub on the terrace was infested with caterpillars. Eventually there were 7 pupae left on it. Yesterday one of the butterflies came out of the pupa. Here are some of the pictures. Shot with my 5D3 and 100L macro. It is a tailed jay.

Front page often V .. E ..... R ................Y .. SLOW to load

It's been happening a while but seems to be getting even worse lately, opening the front page of this site can take a very long time.
from what I can tell, it often seems the holdup is google-analytics related code and waiting for social media sites to return data for their links (with counters?)
Seems at its worst during the day when all those over-used social media sites are very busy.

Once into the CR forum section, stuff loads pretty quickly, even with graphics.

I doubt any of this is going away... I'll either be skipping the front page or looking for a browser plugin to block all that 3rd party code from trying to load.

Grand Canyon Sunset

Hello all!

I just got back from Grand Canyon National Park where I was shooting for about a week. Just now getting images processed and wanted to share a few with you. Images were captured on a Canon EOS 6D and a sensor modified Canon EOS 5D IR.

Any comments, questions or critiques please don't hesitate to leave a response. More feedback the better! : )

Canon Complaints?

Hey guys,

Has anyone ever go anywhere with complaining to Canon? I have had to send my 1DX to them 3 times due to faults... I recently sent mine in for the " Modification ", when it was returned the view finder was full of dust same with the sensor. After using it, it started flicking the lube on to the mirror, focus screen and sensor. It has also failed to focus on numerous occasions, and to top it off the Error 80 kept coming up. Has anyone had any success with complaints to get a small or large reimbursement for the inconvenience?

W/A zoom for 5D MkIII

Having made the jump from a 7D to a 5D MkIII :) I am re-assessing my lens collection. I have a Sigma 10-20mm which,I understand, will fit the 5D but will produce unacceptable distortion and vignetting. On the to be sold pile then :(. I am therefore looking for a replacement. I want a lens to cover the range 17mm to 24mm (as I have the 24-105mm) although I would consider up to 50mm in order to save lens changes. There seem to be a lot more EFS lenses available and I keep on finding what appears to be a lens that fits my specification only to find that it is EFS only. Having splashed out on the 5D my budget is limited so I would consider 3rd party lenses. Any recommendations?

Problem: 70D saving 0-Byte files

Hi guys!

I need your help:
My brandnew 70D (4 days old), has problems at saving files on the sdhc card. I use an sandisc extreme 32 gb uhs-1 card. The first files on Wednesday and Thursday were ok, but now all Raw files have 0 Bytes, the jpegs too.
I tried one of my older sdhc cards, but there appears the same problem.
I did an reset on all Camera functions, and reformatted the card. The card is ok, when I save files from the computer on it.

What can I do?
My son thinks, there is an hardware problem. Is there anything I can do against it?

I wrote to the internet shop, where i bought it. They refused exchanging the Camera (despite they offer an uncomplicated exchange in the first 7 days if something is broken), because they only own a few of them.

Send it to Canon here in Germany? Or rely on an exchange?

Dani

Online Storage/Cloud - What's Good?

I've been kicking around the idea of using the many online storage or cloud options. I've noticed that some are for ALL kinds of files, but being a photographer, is there one which you all use that works well for us photographers? The idea of being able to show clients files anywhere/any time is very appealing. However, all the services probably aren't created equal. I'd want to be able to back up RAW/TIFF/JPEGS, etc. Videos not as important.

What do you use? What do you like about it?

Thanks in advance...

Setup Question 600ex-rt

Hi,

I Just got my new Canon 600ex-rt. I have a Canon 7d, a flash 430ex II, and a pair of yongnuo yn-662c wireless flash trigger transceiver.

Basically what I want to do is put one of my transeiver on my camera, to fire my 630ex and I want my 430ex II to fire as a slave.

I'm able to do it, when my flash is on my camera, but I can't do it when my 630ex-rt is mount to my yn-622c.

Is there a non-compatibility with those two? What should I do ?

Sorry for my bad english, I speak french.

Olivier :)

EF-s 17-85 focus how poor

Hi Folks, I have the EF-s 17-85 kit lens from my 40D, I am using it on my 7D which I bought body only.
I have checked the AFMA using the dot focus method and find that from 50-85 I need 0 to +1 for centre point of dot method.
The problem arises as I get down to 17mm I am out of AFMA points starting at about +10 and still going at +20.
I had the ribbon cable repaired recently though I don't think this has caused the problem as I see that older pics have the same OOF problem.
My question is, is this normal for this lens, if not can it be easily dialled in as I see this is the end I use most.
I do not wish to spend any more on this lens and I am not shy of getting out the screwdrivers if I can find someone to tell me which bit affects what. What I don't want to do is experiment with adjustments and screw up the end that is in focus!
It is possible that the best bit won't be having the lens fixed but fixing it myself!

Cheers Graham.
