Request for Advice: 5D3 AF issues nightphotography

Hi,
My 5D3 is a great cam. Coming from the 30D I set its AF by suggestion of my brick and mortar dealer on the center AF point. In 90% of the cases it works great.
But compared to the 30Ds center AF point which was quite snappy even at very distant and dim light in moonless nights, the 5D3 AF is struggling a bit. Still being in my learning curve since August, what are the mistakes by my side while handling my gear.
AF on the moon: no problem.
AF on Jupiter: mostly no problem.
AF on some distant, dimmer light at full darkness...not always working.

Guess I've read about slight issues here, so thank you for any help

Q: 5d3 Autofocus squares in viewfinder - tracking

Situation: AF Case #6, erratic movement. AI Servo. 4- or 8-point expansion enabled.
AF/Meter start on the subject with centre AF point.

Subject (dogs at play, at great speed!) moves all over the field, I keep it within the 61 AF points and eventually I see a shot and press the shutter all the way. Despite the fact that the reticle display never moved from the original "lock on," the shot is properly focussed, though the subject is no longer "under" the original 5 points. The AF system seems to be "invisibly" tracking the subject and maintaining focus while confusing me (the operator) by displaying the point originally locked on rather than the current locked point.


Q: Is there a way to have the viewfinder AF display track and continuously display the active AF point in real-time, rather than "going out" soon after it locks on? I've tried the 4-point (preferred) and 8-point expansion modes. Zone AF is too much of a blunderbuss for my purposes. :)

I haven't spelunked all the Custom Functions yet, but my reading of the manual suggests that my expectations and intuition are wrong - that is, the viewfinder AF squares do NOT track the active AF point after locking on and until the shutter fires. I have it set in AF5 to display in modes 1,2,4. That is, everything but "always on 61point." It does indeed display, but doesn't move with the subject. YES, I am using Ai Servo and it seems to do more than the manual suggests (p103/104).

Is there any way to get the VF reticle to track this way? I'm just getting to know the camera (frame #241 today!) but my hit-rate today for focus was nearly 95% - way up on the 40-60% for my 30d under the same circumstances.

For the moment, I'm just using the centre AF point in 4-way expansion mode for focus acquisition, and the camera seems to track correctly over the other AF points despite still showing the "active" AF point as the centre. In playback, on the LCD, the red square is where it should be, and rarely the centre point :)

This is more of a confidence thing than anything else - I'm conditioned to expect poor tracking performance, so I want the 'crutch' of knowing where the camera is aiming for. Am I making sense? Thanks for any insights.

Flash/Speedite for 7D and 600D (Rebel T3i)

My wife and I are enthusiasts (in Australia) with a 7D and 600D and are considering our first speedlite purchase. We will get two so that we can have a macro and portrait set up with two flashes (operating wirelessly from the camera master control). We are considering getting two Canon 430 EX II, but could make one of them the 600 EX-RT if there was a compelling reason to spend h extra money. Comments/experiences sought.

EF200mm f1.8L vs EF200mm f2L IS vs EF300mm f2.8L IS II

I'm looking for an excellent lens for use in fast sports and portraits. I'm considering between these 3 lenses. It's really hard to find comparisons of these lenses let alone individual reviews. So I'm depending on the professional photographers here whom have used any of these lenses.

EF 200 mm F/1.8 L USM - used on Ebay - US$3200-4000 (but they look like they've been driven over by a truck)
EF 200mm f/2L IS USM - New on Amazon - $6000
EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM II - New on Amazon - $6800

There's about $2000 gap in prices in between these lenses. But price is not the deciding factor. I care about being able to use the lens wide open so it needs to be super sharp at the widest aperture. The IS is also not a big deal since I'll be shooting upwards of 1/200. I would like to use extenders (stacked if possible), how much loss in IQ is sacrificed for reach.

As of now I'm considering 200f1.8 but it's tough to find one in good condition. It seems practical in terms of range, 280mm F2.5 or 400mm F3.5 or 560mm F5.6 (stacked is doable). The images I've seen so far are just amazingly sharp and the bokeh is simply stunning. I can't reproduce it with my 70-200 f2.8 v2 even if I try my best.

What are your experiences with the any of the lenses? Which one is a more practical - range, portability, focusing speed, AI servo performance, Image quality at widest aperture, bokeh quality?

After CES Whats Next for Canon?

<p>After a decided lack of exciting Canon DSLR announcements  at CES, the next big show coming up will be CP+ from January 31  – Feb 3 2013.  Canon and Nikon each have  huge spaces reserved for their exhibits at the Pacifico Yokohama, Japan exihibition hall and traditionally have made some major announcements at CP+.</p>
<p>Will the long awaited EF 200-400mm f/4 L finally be announced?  It was two years ago in 2011 at CP+ that Canon announced that lens development program, so what better place to announnce the lens formally.</p>
<p>Many are also thinking a 70D or the 7D Mark II is due.</p>
<p>We do not have any inside information or leaks at this point, so this is just pure speculation, but Canon is almost certain to announce some new products.</p>
<p>New lenses are the toughest products to predict, but recent new lens rumors beyond the 200-400mm f/4 L  might find fufillment at CP+ as well.</p>
<p>Expect  more to come and rumors will abound as the show gets near. If there is to be a major announcement, it should happen in the next 10 days.</p>

Should I go with a 6D or a Mkii while they're cheap

Hey guys I've seen other threads about this but no updates really in a couple week with any new valuable information. So I'm currently shooting on a T2i of my own but often renting out either 5D mkii's or mkii's even now, (I'm an independent filmmaker) and I finally have the cash on hand to upgrade my own camera so I don't have to spend the money on rentals. If i had the money i'd be getting a mkiii but money is tight snd i shoot with sigma lenses so slong with upgrading my body i need to upgrade my glass as well. Now I know the mkii is a workforce and still capable of great things especially when I can pick up the 5Dv2 moire filter to eliminate that issue. But with the arrival of the 6D I'm kind of torn. I know that the moire on this is even worse but I'm worried if I pick up a mkii now while they're cheap, i could miss out on something great in the 6D with it having the new processor and even higher iso capabilities. Any thoughts?

Again if money wasn't an issue I know the mkiii would be the obvious Answer but 3500 clams is a lot when adding the cost of lenses and what not.

New Rebel T4i vs 60d/7D

I think I know what I'm going to do already, but I thought I'd ask some people that know what they're talking about. Sorry if this kind of topic is done to death here.

I currently own a Rebel XSi. It is long overdue for an upgrade. My dilemma is do I get another Rebel or do I bump things up a notch or 2 and get the next level up. So I started looking at a 60D or even the 7D. Which i think are the next levels up. But from my understanding these models have not been updated in awhile? Whereas I know the T4i was updated in the last year. I don't need the absolute latest newest, but I don't want to spend the extra money and get technology that is a couple years old either.

So definitely leaning towards the Rebel, but with my luck a new 60D or 7 D would come out the day after I get the Rebel. Lol I'm also going on vacation in 2 weeks and am not wanting to wait long for anything newer. So would the current 60D be a better purchase than the T4i now?

I'm a very amateur amateur. I'm really using the camera for fun. Travel pictures etc. at this point a 5D3 isn't even a wish for my purposes. I just want a basic "good" camera. Any input would be appreciated.

Canon EOS 6D test data and further impressions on DPreview

We've now spent enough time shooting with the EOS 6D to form a reasonable first impression, and as you'd expect it seems like a very competent camera indeed. It's solidly constructed yet lightweight for a full frame model, and feels great in your hand. Anyone coming from an APS-C SLR will particularly appreciate the large, bright and clear viewfinder that's a characteristic of all full frame models. Set to its 'silent' drive mode the 6D is also wonderfully quiet and discreet - great if you don't want to draw attention to yourself while shooting.

The 6D uses much the same control layout and user interface as other Canon SLRs, which has been refined over successive generation to the point where it works extremely well. Most of the key controls are within easy reach of your right forefinger or thumb, including an array of buttons that give direct access to key settings such as ISO, metering mode, and drive mode. In concert with Canon's well-implemented 'Q' menu, this means you can change a huge array of options without moving your hands from the shooting position.

There's no such thing as perfect camera, of course, and we do have some immediate gripes with the 6D. The 8-way multicontroller feels rather spongy and imprecise, especially when navigating the camera's Q-menu. Its positioning within the rear dial also makes it less convenient for AF point selection than the joystick that's used on Canon's other high-end SLRs. The depth of field preview button is poorly-positioned for portrait format shooting, and the location of the power switch behind the mode dial is far less convenient than placing it around the shutter button (as Nikon, Pentax and Sony all do). None of these are deal-breakers, but they make the 6D a bit less pleasant to use than it could be.

The addition of built-in Wi-Fi and GPS probably won't immediately grab traditionalists, but we can envisage all sorts of situations where they could be useful, from geotagging your travel shots to remote-controlling your camera from your smartphone. The Wi-Fi control capabilities not surprisingly feel somewhat first generation, with limited functionality: you can change the shutter speed, aperture and ISO, move the autofocus point around the screen, and release the shutter (with an obligatory focus cycle first if the lens is set to AF), but there's nothing much beyond these essentials. However the ability to see the camera's live view on the your phone clearly opens up a new world of creative possibilities, and with the 6D you don't need to buy a plug-in accessory to make it all work. The GPS certainly appears to work as advertised too.

The problem is the competition

The elephant in the room, of course, is the Nikon D600 - a camera that offers a higher spec in several key areas, with its 39-point AF system (including 9 cross-type in the centre of the frame), 100% viewfinder, 2016 pixel colour-sensitive metering, faster 5.5 fps shooting, dual card slots and excellent movie spec (including such things as clean HDMI output and a headphone socket for sound monitoring). In many areas the 6D just comes up slightly short in comparison, and the question is whether merely being highly competent will be enough to win the hearts and cash of buyers.

The counter-argument is that many of the D600's advantages won't make a whole lot of difference for the majority of users - how often do you really need to record files to two different cards, for example? - and in our estimation a lot will hinge on the real-world effectiveness of the 6D's autofocus system. If it proves positive and accurate with off-centre subjects (a clear weakness of the EOS 5D series prior to the Mark III), then many users will probably be very happy with it. Our first impressions on this are quite positive, but we'll need to shoot with a wider range of lenses under various different lighting conditions to make a definitive judgement.

Sony F5 and F55 official pricing, cheaper than initially expected...

Original announced price for F55 was $34,900, F5 was $19,400.

B&H preorder price, F5 is $16,490 and F55 is $28,990, so pretty big difference. I'm curious how Canon will respond, as the F5 seems like a more capable camera than the C300 for a better price. I think the F55 will be a hot seller at that price, especially with that global shutter, 14 stops of DR, etc.

Beauty dish for Canon 600EX-RT flash

Hello,

I'm looking for a portable beauty dish to use with this flash either hand held close to the model or on a stand. I saw one used by a photographer on a YouTube tutorial once and unfortunately cannot recall the site. I think he was using Nikon gear though. I've seen a retailer on eBay with different modifier kits that includes a beauty dish for each specific model of speedlite except the Canon 600EX-RT.

I'll look forward to any recommendations.

How are the AF points numbered on the 5D3

Hi,

I installed the Rob Cole's plugin for lightroom today (thanks to Marsu42). While checking the AF information in the metadata, I noticed that for AF expansion mode, the AF focus points were mentioned as numbers. For instance, one of my shot's AF metadata read - "AF Points Selected: 19, 29, 30, 35 and 41".

My question is, what is the numbering sequence for the AF points.

Fast lens for indoor use

killswitch
Looking for a fast lens, mainly for indoor(with low light) use. It will be used in family events, indoor parties at night and its usage will range from single to group portraits. Most of the time I will have external flash attached. Right now I take my 24-70 f2.8L in such events but I am looking for something lightweight and fast. It will be paired with a 5d3 and at times 60d. Oh, I use the 50mm 1.8 II at times and it often hunts for focus in dim lighting conditions where the 24-70 snaps on to the target almost instantly. I am on the verge of selling the 50mm 1.8 II.
