Your opinion on backup camera

Hello all, I've been thinking about getting a second camera, I'm wondering what to get. So far I've been thinking about a 7D or a 1D3. I've used the 7d and liked it but full frame is just so nice and crop feels funny but sharing batteries with the 5d2 would be nice. I have a 13 year old canon 1d with the 1.3 sensor and it feels pretty good. I choose these cameras based on their used price of around 1000$ or would it be better to wait and get something newer?

I hate photographing my family for posed photos...

They always look horrible. The wife has very thin eyes naturally when she smiles, so it looks like they are closed, my daughter likes to bug out her eyes to be funny... and then today we were on a limited time schedule so I really didn't have a chance to review the images... and needless to say... Ughhh...

And then I was asked to have my two and their two cousin do a group photo... I don't see that ending well since the baby may elect to cry... the other will bug out her eyes, the one cousin is completely unruly and if she lived in my house and acted the way she did, she would be disciplined everyday, and the other is physically and mentally handicapped.

So god help me.

Travel Advice to National Parks in Utah

I have two questions I searched for answers to and couldn't find adequate enough answers. I a m going to be going on a 2 week trip to Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Zion National parks soon. I will have all my camera gear in a backpack (cary on) and will be flying into Salt Lake City with a direct flight from a big city, so I wont have to worry about puddle jumpers and small overhead storage.
1. In the past I have put my tripod in checked baggage, but am wary of doing so now as I have a good tripod I wouldn't want damaged or lost. It will not fit inside of my back pack. How do you travel with your tripods when you can't fit them in your travel bag? I was thinking of taking it as my second "small item" but am not sure if it is going to be deemed as a dangerous object.
2. Any recommendations for little known places from people who have been to these parks recommend?

IQ comparison; or how meaningful is DXO

Hello, I made a table with different samples from different cameras at different settings. I took the pictures from dpReview, and arranged them in 6 rows with 4 pictures each. The picture in each row are taken with the same setting (ISO, Raw or JPG). The pictures are mainly from Canon or Nikon cameras, but others are also included.

Feel free to rank the pictures in each row, or to just point a interesting things. I will post the picture with the settings and the cameras later.

You should download the picture to see it at 100%

The goal is not to spot the 70D. The idea is to rank the picture according to your impression, and then see later from what cameras they were.

200 f2.0 first dissapointed customer ever? *it's back!*

Hi guys!

This is an outlet of my frustration.

I bought the 200 f2.0 L a month or so ago and while it's CRAZY image quality, I'm very dissapointed.

The AF is highly inaccurate even with correct afma, it's just all over when tracking and the shots vary a lot in sharpness. FoCal couldn't even do a complete run without prompting me with a message telling me it can't focus, and even suggested the reason might be "a poor performing lens camera combo"

And a few days ago the final effing drop, the focusing ring sounds like it's sprinkled on the inside with gravel!! How??

I have owned almost every lens in the L-series and this is the very first
Time build quality have been an issue...

So I think it truly sucks plain and simple.

I once
Tried to break and scratch a defective 17-85 canon, and it I tried REALLY hard throwing it to the ground, but couldn't even scratch the front element and part
From already defective AF, it
Still shot like new...

Canon ? Wtf?!

5D mk III - AF microadjustment and AF-ON button issues

I just got my camera back from a 'clean and check' at Canon. Had a few stubborn dust spots that I just couldn't get rid of. They also updated the firmware for me.

I took the camera and 70-200/4 IS to the beach yesterday and figured I would test out a few different AF microadjustments in the real world to see if I still needed a +3 on the tele end. Tried out 0, +3 and +5 in the field.

When I got home, I did not see the AF adjustment on the LCD info nor on the Canon ImageBrowser for any shots taken in One Shot mode; only in AI Servo.

Realized something:
I use the AF-ON button for focus.
In any mode (One shot/AI focus/AI servo), pressing and releasing the AF-On button then clicking the shutter does not engage the microAF adjustment
In any mode, pressing and HOLDING the AF-On button while clicking the shutter does engage the microAF adjustment

Can someone confirm this behavior for me? Is it specific to the 5D III??

Just upgraded from the 60D to 70D - I'm loving the new video capabilities!

I have just upgraded from the 60D to 70D and loving the new video capabilities! The touchscreen is amazing! I think this is going to open up some serious video production options for amateur enthusiasts. I got it with the 18-55mm STM lens kit. My first impression was that I had bought a junky lens - simply because of how light it was to hold. But after using it a little, I am very happy with the quality of the images - and the speed of focussing while using continuous auto-focussing.

I mush admit though - if I was not in to using my DSLR for video, I would not think the upgrade was worth it - as the 60D was an excellent camera.

I made a youtube video of the unboxing showing some closeups of the camera body (and a little bit of using the touchscreen).

Advice - worth the jump 550d to 70d?

Guys,

This is a genuine request for opinions. For my first couple of years photography I’ve had a 550d and frankly being totally new to the field have been delighted with it. But it’s getting on and I’m getting to the point where I’m starting to realize some of the limitations to my little “magic box”. I’m therefore thinking about the new 70d. What I find almost impossible to gauge from all the informed opinion and debate about ISO charts, sensor IQ and the like is just how much of real-world difference I’d notice and would like the opinions of anyone with greater knowledge than me. To be clear, that’s pretty much anyone who regularly remembers to take the lens cap off for their first shot .

I do understand that these would be just opinions and yes it’s different for everyone but I’d rather listen to a few of those opinions to get an idea of what I might expect to see from such an upgrade. To inform those opinions my photography prime interests are:-

• Nature, most especially birds in flight.
• Sports, especially football and cricket.
• Rock concert photography.
• A smaller amount of landscape / architecture photography and occasional macros.

I’ve got what I think is a decent collection of lenses with the obvious “miss” being something a bit longer for the birds, all Canon:-

10-22, 24-70L (the older version, not the latest one), 100L Macro, 70-300L

All lenses frankly more than adequate for my current level of talent / capability. I took previous advice to concentrate on glass first.

My real expectation of upgrading from a 550d to a 70d is:-

Significant improvements (for me):-

Low light capability for the concerts and indoor or other low-light shots. Seems to me there should be a noticeable improvement?
AF performance and flexibility, especially for the birds in flight and low light situations. I’m thinking this should be the real deal clincher?

I guess there are other things, I do very occasionally video things so the new Live View AF looks like a big jump and of course the touch / vari-angle screen will be a genuine step forwards.

What I’m really after though is opinion on whether the two areas that I point out (AF and low light capability) are genuinely things that I will see a genuine improvement in. I don’t plan to buy just yet, I will let the price run down first but I’m curious to see if my expectations are roughly in line with reality 

Thanks.

Canon SL-1 as travel camera

It's adventure time again. We have just booked three weeks in Laos, trekking and backpacking. This time I just didn't want to lug the 5D3 plus glass. Research pointed me towards the brilliant range of mirrorless cameras, the Olympus OMD in particular. This ran a very close second to the final choice. My shooting style needs quick response AF, and a viewfinder for me is a must. The winding road eventually led to the new, tiny 100D/SL-1. OMG this camera is TINY! APS-C sensor, viewfinder, light weight and sharp price clinched it. Plus it takes all my Canon glass. For the trip I've set it up with one of the classier EF-S lenses, the EF-S 15-85 f/3.5-5.6is.

Check it out compared to it's bulked-up siblings:
http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=canon_eosm&products=canon_eos100d&products=canon_eos7d&products=canon_eos70d&products=canon_eos700d

And there is a moral to the story. My initial SL1 was a DOA, exchanged the next day over the counter without question. It's a good argument for buying new gear well before a planned trip, and also for buying from an authorized dealer. We're not leaving for a couple of months. If I'd cheaped-out and bought gray, just a couple of days before leaving for the trip, the potential for disappointment would have been very high.

Almost a week in, I'm loving it. This new class of tiny DSLR deserves a big future. I'll remember to post some Laos shots when we get back.

1DX Issues after recall service!?!?!?

Hey guys,

I received an email from CPS saying about the recall notice on some of the 1DX's, unfortunately mine was one that fell in that group...

Before it was set away it was perfect nothing wrong with it, focus locked on every time etc... Now after receiving it back from canon it sometimes struggles to lock on even to simple things, yesterday I was using it a falconry show and manage to get the Error 80 come up. The focus screen, mirror and sensor have been flicked with looks like oil. Not really sure how I can move forward with this now.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Cheers

7D Mark II news

A german ambassador from Canon told some dealers that the 7D Mark II will be ready for the christmas business 2013.

He told them, that the 7D Mark II maybe have the same sensor as the 70D, is faster, body like the 5D Mark III (with no rate button), 5-shot-AEB, improved AF system for stills without live view and a CF card or a CF/SD card slot.

For me the specs sounds possible because the price gap between the 6D and 70D is not very big. But is it really possible that Canon introduce a product that is more popular and is reducing the sales of the 70D?

CPS Repair Appointments?

So...just read about this and thought I'd put it to you fine folks. Rather than mailing off your gear for repair, you can apparently make an appointment and go in person in one of two areas. Anyone done this? I'm specifically interested in the Ridgefield Park, NJ location.

What are the advantages? Do they actually do simple repairs on the spot? Is this just trading shipping for gas/time? What's the process? I've asked for an appointment so we'll see what they say. Are they pretty good about fitting you in or should I expect an outrageous wait list to get a slot?

Thanks all

Canon 7D Major Issue

Hey all. I was out shooting some college football today (video) and the camera was working fine. Then all of a sudden I noticed that my record button was not working. Once I realized this I look closer and noticed that none of the other buttons (menu, iso, playback etc..) were working.

This evening I sat down and tried to research the issue. I didn't find much. I took out both batteries and even did a software update. The only mode that buttons actually work in (Menu, play back etc.) is Full Auto. If I put it in any of the others the buttons become non responsive. The only thing that works in manual is the wheel by the shutter button but instead of it doing the Shutter, it controls the aperture, oh that and the light button. I notice that the ISO is changing on it's own in Manual as well.

I've been able to get it to work a couple times with taking the batteries out and resetting the camera and also luck (not sure how it started working) but as soon as I put a card in, the camera wanted me to adjust the time, and as soon as that happened it went back to being borked.

I really have no clue what the deal is. I am guessing there is an issue with the camera and it will need to be sent in. Anyone have any ideas? I've tried different batteries, the power button is completely on and the lock isn't on.

Anything is appreciated!

Recommend a 1.4x and 2x for my non-L lenses?

What is the latest consensus for the best "third-party" TCs these days? Have been using a Tamron 1.4x SP AF TC for many years but it probably could use upgrading. (Yes, am aware of light loss, AF troubles, and those things, but that's OK.) Ah, but ... if only Canon made such a thing, I'd be all over it. Primarily shooting with a 6D which I love. Suggestions?
