Viewfinder Specifications

I know the typical ratings for an optical viewfinder (maginification, accuracy and sensor format) are readily available for most cameras, and often, if you dig deep enough you can even find the eye relief rating for a viewfinder. Does anyone know why there isn't any rating for any camera (that I can think of) for apparent field of view (similar to telescopes, binoculars or microscopes)? Anyone who has looked through the eyepiece for a high-quality microscope or telescope knows what I'm talking about. Does anyone know what the AFOV would be for your average camera VF?

Yellowstone vacation advice

I'm flying into Yellowstone and trying to pack and wanted advice. I have 4 bodies. I was thinking about bringing 2 bodies. I have a 1DX. Obviously, my favorite to use. I have 1d mark IV, 7d and 5d mark iii. I have cf and sd cards, but my sd cards also work in my camcorders and they are larger than my cf cards. I was hoping to bring my Motorola Xoom tablet to save space. I was thinking about taking the 7d and 5d3 to save space (charger is much smaller too). I want to take pics of birds in flight and astrophotography. I am bringing my Canon 600 f4 and my 14mm f2.8 Tamron. My 70-200, both 1.4 and 2x extenders. I also will bring my 35 f1.4 and 24-70 f2.8. I am leaving behind my 85 1.2, 100 macro, 400 f2.8, macro extenders and my 17-40 f4.

Am I making any mistakes?

Chances of EF-S 17-55/10-22 replacements w/ 7dmk2?

Hi all,
I currently have a 650D and I want to expand my lenses for it.

I actually plan to buy a 7DMK2 when it comes out, but that is some time off.

My question is:
1) Do you think the EF-S 17-55mm IS USM and EF-S 10-22mm will be replaced around 7D launch? Both are on the older side of available EF-S lenses. Then again, both are awesome... Only improvement I could see is even further refining optics on both and maybe adding IS on the 10-22 even though its not necessary at such a wide angle. BUT, still since these lenses are still quite expensive I would be a bit miffed if they were replaced with significantly better versions in 6 months. Thoughts?

2) Is it possible they might make the EF-S 17-55mm IS USM a kit lens for the 7DMK2? I don't see the 18-55mm IS STM quite being up to par quality wise with a camera that will likely be the quality of the 7DMK2... If that happens, odds are it will be much cheaper than it is now. I could actually see it happening, similar to what Canon did with the 24-105L IS USM.

So, just wanted to get some opinions on this. I really want to expand my artistic possibilities now, but on the other hand if it is likely these lenses are getting replaced in the near future I might just make due and wait. I realize there is nothing wrong with either of these lenses and they are both fantastic, but I always like to get the best value for my money - so if the value drops significantly in 6mos due to new models, I might have a bit of buyers remorse. Thanks :)

One thing led to another...

I stopped in small town called Greylingstad yesterday on my way to photograph a coal mine. It was early morning and the light was great. I stopped to photograph an old house , the owner came out and said hi, and I asked if I could photograph her. She said yes. When she saw the image on screen she asked if she could show her mother and invited me inside. We waited in the kitchen while her mother got dressed and I made another photo of her there. this is the one I like most ....more images from my short stopover in Greylingstad here at...http://thelazytravelphotographer.blogspot.com/2013/08/greylingstad.html

Direct playback is possible on an HDTV via the integrated HDMI port, with HDMI-CEC support, and 60 fps movies are saved in the Internet-friendly MP4 format for expedited online sharing and editing. When recording at 30 fps, the DIGIC 6 processor and Fine Movie Detail Processing work together to enhance noise reduction and overall clarity.</dd>

<dt><strong>Built-In Wireless Connectivity</strong></dt>
<dd>Built-in Wi-Fi allows direct, wireless transferring of photos and videos to mobile devices and PCs for instant online sharing to social networking sites and cloud-based storage sites. The CANON iMAGE GATEWAY helps to expedite this process through an intuitive workflow, and the free Canon CameraWindow app, available for iOS and Android devices, enables efficient transferring control and also permits GPS tagging to images. An enhanced Wi-Fi set-up also works to streamline connecting to wireless hot spots, too, as WEP Key input is no longer needed and wireless preferences can easily be modified through a web browser. Additionally, Automatic Switching via the Image Sync function works to automatically sync images with any discovered and linked PC within a designated network or, alternatively, images are temporarily sent to the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY for later transferring.</dd>

Err 1 on 100mm f/2.8

So today, out of nowhere, my Canon 100mm macro started giving me an "Err 1" message. I cleaned the contacts and it doesn't work. I tried other lenses on my 5d3 and they all worked, then I tried the 100mm on my 50D and it started to work, but as soon as i take the picture i get the error. I'm assuming that this is something that I will have to send it to get fixed.

I know this won't be productive, but i have to take some time to vent. This lens is LESS THAN 3 YEARS OLD!!! it cost me about $550 new, and now i have to fork over another $153+ to get this thing fixed? it's not like i dropped it, got it wet, banged it into the wall, or melted it - it just stopped working. i checked online and apparently its some cable in the lens that burns out? if this is the case, how can canon seriously expect users to pay this amount on something that is so new and out of their control? way to stick by your products canon...

anyway, its now my birthday - thanks canon.

What Lee adaptor ring for Canon 70-300 L ?.

Hi Guy's

I'm planning to purchase the Canon 70-300mm L next week. It's go to be used primarily for landscape photography on a full frame body. I currently use a 77mm wide angle adaptor ring to help avoid vignetting at the wide end of my 17-40mm and 24-105mm L's, when using the Lee 100mm filter system. Obviously i'm going to need a 67mm adaptor ring for my new lens, but is the wide angled version required to avoid vignetting at 70mm ?. It's twice the price of the standard ring.

Auto iso in manual using center point focus

My first dslr was & is a 60D. I shoot everything for the most part with birding being my favorite. For birding I shoot manual with my iso set to auto 3200. This works really good because the area I live in there are a lot of open fields surrounded by dense woods. A bird could be in focus at iso 100 one second then the next second iso 400-800. Plus I can keep my shutter speed & aperture where I want it.

Av & Tv modes will not let you get the shot you want cause the shutter speed will be too slow or the aperture too wide. Putting a lens at an aperture where it may not be the sharpest.

So it's easy to say the 60D has spoiled me with auto iso. I have a 1ds mark ii and even with safety shift setting it can't compete with having auto iso in the 60D. Plus it doesn't have the additional safety speed setting that the 1d mark iii has.

With that here is my question: For birding I shoot AI servo, spot metering, center point focus with the 100-400 5.6
Will the 6D be on the same level as the 60D for birding using those settings or do I need to look at the 5D mark iii to get the same results or better for birding?

The reason I ask is because I will be using center point focus @ 5.6 will there be a really big difference? Better or worse?

Thanks

5D sensor problem?

Hi guys,

I bought a 5D classic two years ago. Everything of the camera was great to me. I really love it. However, yesterday, I tried to take a photo with no light, and the photo completely broke my heart. I set the ISO at 50 and speed was just 1/500. The format is Raw, I just used Picasa to convert to jpg. The photo looks like this:
IMG_5112.jpg

I was taken a back. Immediately, I took another photo of my room. It seems to be that there was nothing wrong with the second photo (I guess that):

I already re-update the firware, but the problem is still. Who knows what happened to my camera?

<strong>From Australia</strong>
The first country to our knowledge to get the new EOS 70D is Australia. A few have started to trickle in to retailers around the country. For the moment it appears only kits have made their way to retailers.</p>
<p><strong>*UPDATE*

</strong>Bodies are arriving at retailers as we speak.</p>
<div id="attachment_14207" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 333px"><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/70dinstock.png"><img class="size-medium wp-image-14207" alt="EOS 70D in Stock" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/70dinstock-323x575.png" width="323" height="575" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">EOS 70D in Stock</p></div>
<p><strong>The rest of the world…</strong>

We’re told by B&H Photo to expect arrival of the camera to happen before the end of August. Stock will be pretty good, but preorders are still recommended. European retailers should get them around the same time.</p>

(How) do you actually use the 6d/70d wifi remote control app?

I'm wondering: What's the use of the new wifi remote control in practice, given that you cannot move the camera/lens itself? And with the upcoming 70d you can just the swivel screen for awkward angles...

... Is the wifi app just an enhanced self portrait gadget or has anybody managed to pull off some shots that wouldn't have been possible otherwise, for example shy wildlife? None of the Canon marketing examples really convince me :-\ but I'd be not surprised if there were creative uses I currently cannot think of.

Btw one of the shortcomings seems to me that as usual there is no sdk, so we cannot expect 3rd parties like Magic Lantern to make use of this feature for focus stacking, timelapse, motion detection, trap focus ... and the Canon apps seems to be limited to p&s.
