Should I get into this industry?

Hi there, my name is Dave. I need a little advice if possible. I was in the computer graphics industry for 20 years. I lost my job last December. I've been having a hard time finding work. So, with that said I'm kind of find myself at a crossroads in my life/career. I have been a hobby photographer for about 10 years and thought maybe now is the time to change career paths. What kind of advice would you give someone who wants to get into this career. I dont have any buisness or marketing education, so I am willing to take some classes. I love to shoot landscapes, cars, old buildings, abstract things. I know this industry is competitive and probably oversaturated but I want to do something I love. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Canon 18-135mm VS 17-55mm VS 15-85mm for concerts?

Hi all! I'm far from being a pro, but I'm planning on buying a new lens which would be good for: concerts, and as a walkaround. I love going to concerts, but I used a 50mm f/1.8 (my only lens aside from my kit lens, which is really sad, I know) for the first time to the most recent one I've been to, and most of the pictures were slightly blurry. I think it was due to a combination between the 50mm being a prime lens, and my distance from the stage--I was closer than I thought I would be.

So, I wanted something that would give me versatility, one which would give me good/sharp results no matter my distance from the stage. In addition, something that I could also use as a walkaround lens would be great.

I researched, but I still can't choose which would be the best choice among these:

15-85mm f/3.5-5.6
17-55mm f/2.8
18-135 f/3.5-5.6

Any help/other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

Lenses questions

Hey everyone. This is my third thread in this forum. I have a few questions about lenses and hope I get answers.

1- mm stands for millimeter right ?

2- How do you know which lens is better in zooming and auto focus ?

4- What does EF stand for ? example: Canon EF 100mm

6D and Minolta Auto 280PX?

I upgraded to the 6D and unfortunately there is no onboard flash which is slightly inconvenient at times. Before I was able to use the Minolta Auto 280PX on my T2i with no problems. The 280PX requires 2V to trigger from the camera hotshoe: http://dpanswers.com/roztr/flash_show.php?id=654&pid=MIA280PX The T2i can output 6V from its hotshoe so that is why the flash would fire.

Does anyone happen to know what the 6D hotshoe can output?

Should I even be using such an old flash on my brand new camera? (EX: Something could fry :-\ )

Thanks!

New tripod suggestions

I just received my 300 2.8 IS II. Mounted with my gripped 5DIII and 2x TC III the weight feels like it is too much for my current Manfrotto ball head and tripod. I'm looking at getting a new tripod and gimbal head. The gimbal I am looking at is a RRS PG-02 FG. For legs I am looking at a Gitzo GT3541L series. Currently Gitzo is running a rebate at B&H for $200 on this tripod. I'm wondering if anyone has any input or ideas if this would be a good combination? Surprisingly there are not many reviews on YouTube for this tripod. Just some headless guy? with white gloves extending the legs, but I don't think that is much of a review. LoL

Should I tell my lady friend that she should change the name of her company...

I'd rather remain someone anonymous, so I'll change the name and places to protect the ignorant... I mean innocent.

Well, the lady's company name is... oh lets say Burrito Supreme Photography. And her water mark is a very nice, very swirly font that spells BS photography. Does she simply not know what the Acronym BS stands for in the rest of America... maybe the world?

And every time she posts something on Facebook... I think... maybe she just simply doesn't know. Though I am really not one to talk since my company name is Dirty Sanchez Photography, but my acronym is DSP... so not nearly as awful.

rokinon t1.5 cine or sigma 35 1.4

well here goes my first official post on these forums...

I have a canon mark iii that came with the 24-105 which is a great all around lens. looking to add to my collection by finally investing in some more glass. I do shoot both photo and video with it. sometimes ml raw and sometimes just the internal codec when doing video.

so for the video aspect...as far as image quality goes on these 2 on par with each other? sigma cost more and get electronics with it. I have no problem spending the extra money if its a better lens. just want to get maybe a few opinions between the 2 before pulling the trigger.

also to add I've pretty much decided to get the sigma 85 1.4 for portraits (not sure if there are discounts for buying 2 at same time)

TIA

Best body and lens for product Photography - Request for Comment

I have to recommend and then put together a very specific product photography solution and wondered if anyone would care to offer advice or the usual well meaning personal abuse on my thoughts ;) ............

The user needs to photograph HO scale model locomotives on a dressed product stage that is about 24" x 20". The models are vary from 8 - 12" in length with a width of around 1.25" and a height of 1.5". The lighting is going to 2-3 small softboxes with 200W to 600W equivalent daylight balanced fluorescent bulbs. The user's idea (translated into tech) is to use a camera with good Delta E and minimal noise to generate 10-12MB files which will either be used for high quality print production, or downsized for website. User likes idea of tethering a camera mounted on a tripod (and probably on a 4 axis macro rail on top of a huge arca-swiss type ball head) to a mac, and using tethered live view for composition, dof etc. The workflow is to acquire and color correct in Lightroom possibly using an HDR plug-in with certain product color combinations which might require expanding tonal range)the drop into photoshop for any retouching. The user is color savvy (did digital ore-press work) and understands how to create and use color profiles etc.
The camera has NO OTHER USE, and VIDEO is not required.

My first thought was to use a "low mileage" original 5D as that imager was really nice, the only issues being with the AF speed (which is irrelevant in this application). I do not remember its live view capability.

Now, lenses......

Canon 24-105EF or original 24-70/2.8? plus 50/1.8 or perhaps a 45TS (probably will induce heart failure when it comes to cost). Possibly something longer towards 100mm as a prime Macro.

Would anyone like to comment?

This will be a permanent setup and the goal is really High Quality illustration.

Canon 24-105 IS vs Tamron 24-70 VC

So I know this isn't a very common comparison, but I am looking at buying the Canon 6d as well as a new lens. The way prices are looking, I can get the 6D w/ the 24-105 and a $500 rebate for $2600 while the 6D w/ the Tamron would cost $2800 with a $100 rebate. From experience, what is the optical and performance difference between the f/4 and the f/2.8? Is it worth the extra money?

Can 24-70/2.8 II replace 35/1.4?

I have had the 24-70/2.8 II for a couple of months and I realise now that I have not used the 35/1.4 since. Obviously an f1.4 can do things a f2.8 can't but is DOF really an issue for a wide lens? And I have the 5D MKIII so light/ISO is not that much of a problem either. I was just about to put the 35/1.4 up for sale but I simply can not make up my mind.... Opinions are more than welcome.

Sad Day...the 1V is no longer worth anything to CPS

I love my 1V-HS, lot's of great memories. I paid full price for it in 2001...back then dropping over two grand on a body very much out of the ordinary. Well anyway, fast forward to today. I was re-upping my CPS membership and I noticed the 1V/1V-HS no longer are worth anything (it had been worth a point). I guess canon really is done support film :(

Anyway Amazon still has stock of new ones...sadly they sell new for about ten times the rices of used on EBay.

I went to the North coast of NI recently. A couple of photographs:

canon 16-35ii or sigma 12-24 ii

I'm after a wide angle lens for FF 5d3.

I already have canon 24mm 1.4 so I'm not to concerned with low light shooting at wide apertures.

I'm after it to use pretty much at the wide end, although decent performance performance at the long end wouldn't be go unmixed.

Want to use for it landscapes, environ portraits and close up wacky wide abstracts.

ANyone done a comparison of the two lesnes? is there much difference between 12 and 16mm? is the canon worth the extra £ in terms of IQ?

Macro photography: lens+flash+diffuser?

Hi all!

I'm looking for a macro lens for my Canon 7D, after some research I've narrowed it down to these two:

-Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
-Canon 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM

I'm leaning towards the 100mm for a variety of reasons: IS, f/2.8, can be used for other purposes, newer and cheaper. The 180mm on the other hand is considered the "ultimate macro lens" (from what I read), because thanks to its extra reach it flattens the subject more (but it's old and pending an update).

Which one do you guys suggest?

I'm also going to purchase a flash, would the Canon Speedlite 600 EX-RT be a good choice? Which diffuser do you suggest?

Thanks for the advices!
