A New 4K DSLR?

PB has posted that a new Canon DSLR will be announced at the end of August. It will be 44.7mp and be capable of 4K video recording.

Also from Photography Bay

“Additionally, the camera will have a dedicated port for attaching an electronic viewfinder. While the source wasn’t exactly clear on this point, it seems that this may be some type of proprietary connection for attaching a viewfinder or monitor that is not an HDMI or SDI output.”

CR’s Take

I don’t see this being true. Everything we’ve been told from known sources is that Canon is done officially announcing DSLR’s in 2013. However, there is always a possibility of a development announcement. I also don’t think they can sell a DSLR for more money than the EOS-1D C and that any large megapixel announcement will not be a Cinema EOS product. They can sell a lot of $6000-$7000 cameras to enthusiasts, $10,000+ is harder to do.

Some of you living the big cities might get amazed by the lack of tall building here, but that's all we have, country style!

16mm (21mm equivalent), f11, 1/20s

It's actually a 2 shot HDR, one for top half sky, another for the landscape. I've used a 2-stop soft GND but it's too weak to darken the sky to an acceptable level.

Need some C&C please, I'm pretty new to landscape photography. Thanks!

5D3 vs. 1DX for lower-light shoot

I have a chance to rent one or the other of these for a night-time event this Saturday; I have my 5D2, 24-70 f/2.8L II and 70-200 f/2.8L IS II. The rental place closest also has a 135 f/2L on offer.

So what to do? I lean toward the 5D3 for the fact that I can use the batteries I have too; I have enough CF cards that those won't be an issue either.

If the lighting is similar I should be able to get around 1/80" at f/2.8 (a requirement) at ISO 3200-4000. That leads to the question: Is the 5D3 enough or is the 1Dx worth the learning curve?

I'll attach an image from a similarly-lit event for context once I have one processed.

Superteles: 300 vs 500

Hey all, I recently acquired a 300 2.8L IS Vers. 1. It is a fantastic lens, nail bitingly sharp and the combination with my 1.4x II TC still produces amazing images. My main use for this lens is nature / wildlife photography of mostly mammals / occasional orca and sometimes a few birds. I usually cart my gear with me while hiking (perhaps up to 4-12 miles roundtrip).

I haven't had the lens that long to really get a lot of experience with it but an opportunity has come up to trade this lens and another for a 500 4L IS vers. 1.

So.....the 300 has going for it sharpness, an extra stop of light, lighter weight and better portability, easily hand-holdable, fairly versatile focal lengths with TC's (haven't tried a 2x yet) but suffers a little in reach.

The 500 would give me an extra 200mm of reach natively and still decent image quality at 700mm with a 1.4x. However this is also 3 lbs heavier and would require replacing the monopod that I currently shoot off of with a full tripod / gimbal setup.

I'm shooting a 5D3 currently, no crop bodies. An alternative option would be to keep the 300, and wait for the 7D mark II to get the multiplier.

What would you guys do? I know with wildlife focal length is never enough but part of me doesn't want to give up the versatility and compactness of the 300.

Decisions, decisions......

Wide Angle lens for my 6D

Hello,

I am a newbie to this forum. I would like to have your suggestions for my next lens to use for my Canon 6D. I already have a 24-105L IS, 50mm 1.4, and a 100mm 2.8 Macro lens. I am looking for a wide angle lens for my 1 week next trip to Utah ( Bryce/Zion National Park and of course to the Grand Cayon ). My budget is ~ $1000. I can sell my current lens to get more $$$ for the big wide lens. Please let me know.
Thank you

Masai Mara Safari -September

I am off to Kicheche in Kenya on a photographic safari for 12 nights and will be taking 2 camera bodies 7 d and 5 d mkiii. Lenses will be 300 f2.8 mkii with both 1.4 and 2 x extenders mkiii. Wide angle will be 24-105 and a mid range such as 70-200f4 IS. My question would I be better taking the 70-200f2.8 mkii IS as a lot of photography will be done early mornings and late evenings. Have I covered all bases with the kit. Not looking to take anything bigger than 300 as quality of this lens bare and with extenders is superb. Hope someone who has been to the Masai Mara can help. Many thanks.

Newbie - My shots your thoughts

Hey guys,

So I've been lurking this forum and the site for eons, and think I finally have enough photos that I would say I am proud of that I'd like to see what your thoughts are on them. While I would love to have a larger kit of lenses, I'm saving up for other more pressing financial requirements first. However I do think that what I'm able to capture at least has a certain emotion (or so I hope/think).

I lay myself to the CR courts, have at it.
Jay

70D what do you think?

Everybody is talking about the AF of the new 70D but will this sensor also bring us much better IQ?

For landscapes i don't need the AF that much but better IQ will be nice.

For what i have seen the 70D example pictures looks nice. But it's hard to compare a picture from a 70d with another from a 60d. I need the same object shoot with both DSLRs with same lens to compare.

Are there any example pictures from 70d vs 60d on full size?

I know the Lens makes the most of the IQ but i just wondering if there are any differences?

Chris & Don MacAskill
Founders, photographers, regular guys

Ready to be amazed?

The reason I started with smugmug, and willingly pay good money for it (for that price I could get an extra box of 20 sheets of 4x5" Velvia 50 a year, even at the new prices), is that I like the customisability. I hate flickr with its white backgrounds, I wanted black.
I like smugmug's ability to change almost everything, make galleries look different from each other, all of my public ones (as empty as they are, I should upload more) look the same title-bar and all that, but some privately-shared ones look different, I've stripped all identification and links back to my public galleries.

Still, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt until I see what they've got in store. If they change the way custom galleries work, they're going to lose a lot of customers, I hope they know that and aren't mucking with what works. So maybe they're just changing the home-pages and maybe shared/group pages, in which case it won't affect me (or maybe it'll be a good thing and encourage me to share more).

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 IS
A patent has show up showcasing an EF 50 f/1.8 IS lens. Could this be the replacement to the 50 f/1.4? We had heard about this lens existing last year. While some may desire a direct 1.4 replacement with IS, I think Canon may want some separation between the EF 50 f/1.2L and the next 50 in the lineup. We’ve also heard of a new EF 50 f/1.2L design being tested.

The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens is Very Sharp

From DXO Mark

The folks at DXOMark have tested the new Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 DC (APS-C) HSM lens and found to be extremely sharp. It turns out that it’s the sharpest APS-C lens that they have ever tested. The performance rivals that of Canon’s 24-70 f/2.8L II lens.

Says DXOMark

“Although it is unlikely a user would buy several full-frame wide-angle lenses specifically for an APS-C format camera, the fact remains that the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM is an outstanding performer optically.

If we want to be picky, the Sigma lacks image stabilization and the zoom range isn’t as wide as some rivals, but at $799 the lens is remarkable….”

Bugs Bugs and more Bugs

A bit of "harmless" fun !!! Just started playing with reverse mounting my lens for extreme macro's ! Any constructive feedback would be much appreciated ! Details on my set up are on the site. Also i must say that the pictures where not tempered too much with in post.
Hope you enjoy:

p.s. harmless is in quotation marks as i was using a 35mm zeiss reversed ... maybe not a good idea exposing the rear element of that lens. ::)
