Upgrade fun...

When I tell the wife about the gear I buy and then sold while be able to upgrade for a song... she doesn't care. I hope this doesn't sound like boasting, but I figured like minded individuals can appreciate the following tale.

It began with me reading an article about creating a black background using nothing but a off camera flash.
http://glyndewisblog.com/2010/01/19/the-invisible-black-backdrop-photography-technique/

I was so interested in trying it, I looked for a flash and I saw a really good deal on a 7 graded used 430ex ii flash from B&H. It was something like $125 but then there were some customer service issues and the price went down to $116ish. Either way, for a fully functioning 430ex ii, that is a heck of a deal. Yes there were scuffs along the body, and on the wide angle screen one of the notches was broken off, but the other notch was there, so it still came out easily enough.

That was about a year ago.

On Craig's List, a lady is selling off her gear because she is getting out of the business. She is selling a 50mm f/1.4 and a 580ex ii for $470. I offer her $450 for both and she bites. The 50mm's auto focus is just fine as it should be, and the 580 is in perfect condition save for velcro being attached here and there. But I might eventually use the velcro so it doesn't bother me.

I then sold my scuffed but fully functioning 430ex ii for $184. So the final price to upgrade to the 580 is $41. A steal right. Well... I also sold the 50mm for $300... so for basically taking into my possession for 2 days, I was able to upgrade from a 430 ex ii to a 580 exii for -34 bucks.

And I'm loving the 580. The feel of it is dramatically different. The recycle time with the same batteries as the 430 is lightening quick. I'm a happy camper.

Compact camera for travel/everyday use

Looking for a compact body for travel. Would prefer an optical viewfinder over an electronic one if possible, and one that has great ISO performance in this segment. Don't know if I am asking too much but would be great if I can get clean images upto 1600 in low light conditions and usable upto 3200/6400. I don't know if such compact bodies come with fast primes, or fast zooms but a fixed aperture lens would be nice. Basically looking to replace my 5D3 when I want to travel light or just out and about. Any recommendations?

Question regarding focusing

Over the past six months I've been noticing that my pictures are getting fuzzier than what I've experienced in the past. The problem is probably me, but the only lens that seems to be consistently sharp is my 60mm macro. Do auto-focusing systems get out of calibration? I've had me camera since 2009 when it was first released and have not done any adjustments to it.

thanks in advance,

Wes

Canon 600D flash problem

Hi, I'm new to the forum so I'm sorry if this is not the right place to post questions. If its not, please let me know where to post.

I have a Canon 600D for almost a year now, and since I bought it the built in flash always had a problem. Whenever I take a photo, no matter what light conditions, the photo comes all black. I've been told by a friend that probably it was because the flash light was too strong. Would really appreciate help from the forum. Thank you!

Canon didn't cancel the "1Ds" line when 1DX came out!

Everyone seems to claim that Canon merged the 1D and 1Ds lines into the 1DX and killed the 1Ds line..

In all official stuff i've seen Canon has said that the 1DX is a combination of the speed of the 1D and full frame of the 1Ds.. hence the current 1D and 1Ds lines "merged". That does not mean that because the 1DX combines those good things from 1D IV & 1Ds III that there will not be a 1DXs.. (or whatever it is called)

I just wanted to make this clear.

I'm looking forward to working with both the 1DX and the 1DXs. The combo would kill any other camera brand.

7DM2 as a FF? Hmmm...

What do you guys think of this rumor? I'd only heard rumors before, but thought I'd throw it out into the CR forums to see what you guys all think. Up until now, 7D has been thought of as the flagship for crop sensors. However, is the 70D the new flag-bearer with big changes to come in the FF lineup?

Here's a link to the CanonWatch site where it's discussed:

DSLR vs Mirrorless for timelapse.

Hi guys,

I want to shoot more timelapse movies and wanting to get some advise on getting a new body.

I usually take a series of photos and combine them in post to make a short clip.

With DSLRs you have the mirror that flips up and down for every photo and is rated for a particular amount of photos.

So I was thinking of picking up a EOS-M or wait for the update(heres hoping :P) as it wont have this issue.

What do you guys think?

Looking for C Stands in the UK

Title says it all. I'm looking for C Stands (along with boom arms)

I have looked into this a little though, and have read good things about the Lumopro C Stand, and Avengers C Stand... however neither seem to be (easily) available in the UK.

Now one make I keep seeing is the Interfit INT308 C-Stand and Boom Arm Set.

http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-interfit-int308-c-stand-and-boom-arm-set/p1027342

So the question I guess I am asking, is what brands do other people use, and does anyone have any experience with this company?

Kind Regards,

Steve

Tested true freedom yesterday

Yesterday I was going to a friend's place to visit. This friend has two one year old twins. So I took my camera with me along with the recently bought four YN 622Cs. I do not have any ETTL flash, so I put three Nikon SB 28DXs at 1/2 and 1/4th power on top of three bookshelves directed towards the ceiling. The walls were coloured, so the white ceiling was my best bet for reflecting the light. Now, earlier I used to use cables to fire my flashes remotely, and that was cumbersome and clumsy. Boy, yesterday with the four YN622Cs (one on top of my camera, and the other three with the three SB 28DXs) it was so much easy and fun photographing the twins. I was not going for any dramatic lighting, I just wanted enough soft light to use a shutter speed fast enough to capture the twins's activities indoors (and the sudden moments like the photo below where one of the babies falling down after throwing a tantrum). It felt so great just to be able to reposition the lights without breaking a sweat. Some photos from yesterday attached. (Now I need to learn a bit of more post processing) Your comments are most welcome.

PS: YN 622Cs are my first remote flash transceivers. And they seem to work just great in manual mode.

Canon Testing a 75+ Megapixel EOS-1 Body? [CR1]

The big megapixel camera gets bigger!

Photography Bay is reporting that a good source of theirs has told them that Canon is actively testing a 75+MP EOS-1 DSLR camera body.

I don’t find anything surprising in the megapixel count, as Canon has announced enormous megapixel sensors in the past. However, this is the first I’ve heard of an actual product using image sensors with this much resolution.

Previous rumors have placed the “big megapixel” camera from Canon in the 40-50mp range.

We do expect such a camera to make its way to us sometime in 2014.

How to program shift the EOS M

I was shooting in P mode and wanted to shift the exposure reading to get diff DoF but can't seem to find an easy way to do it. In order for it to work, I need the shutter half pressed and while the AE info is shown, I can turn the dial.
The av an tv values will shift but it so hard to do unlike in dslr body where you use the wheel by the shutter button.

There must be an easier to do this without reselecting AV from the menu again if all I wanted is a diff AV value.

Bird Photography Critique/Tips

Hi, I have been getting into bird photography since the beginning of this year. I am shooting with a 7D and 100-400 L. Attached is a recent exposure (I have attached both my processed version and the original RAW). This is probably not my best work, certainly not my worst. What I am looking for is a critique of my exposure technique (what you can infer), the image itself, and the processing. Feel free to download the RAW and post an example of how you think I should have processed it (please include a basic write up of what you did).

I am just looking for opinions and suggestions on how I can improve and hone my skills.

Some details about my technique. This was taken about 7-10 feet from the female red-winged blackbird at about 6PM. I used AF Servo, single point AF, Spot metering, ETTR (as much as I dared), and IS to achieve this shot at 1/800s, f/8.0, ISO 800 @ 400mm. I processed the image completely in Lightroom 4. I cropped, adjusted WB, and globally sharpened, then applied the following local adjustments: highlight recovery, contrast, and applied NR.
