70D release date question

Well I am on a pre-order list for the 70D but seem to be getting conflicting dates as to when it is available. Most folks seem to think it will be available late August BUT the CANON USA website is now saying September 23rd. Word to Canon: drag the release date out and I start thinking...wait for the 7D MkII?? Any thoughts for this impatient enthusiast??

Food Photography: any other Chefs or Food Photographers here?

I have been lurking on this site for over a year, rarely posting as most of you are far more technical and advanced than I am. I have had a Canon since I was 11 and enjoyed photography over my life. I recently upgraded to a 5D Mark III and am happy to have a camera smarter than myself. Since there is no food category I posted this here as it is a portrait of my food. I have had big time problems posting so hopefully this one will actually go through. My question is: anyone else here do food photography? Any favorite food photographers out there? I have had my food shot by several different photographers over the years and have liked Mark Lipccynski's work the best http://marklipczynski.com/food/... I prefer food photographers that do not alter, enhance or do too much styling. I love landscapes and other shots as well and the same thought applies to those. To me, food is sexy enough on it's own. The two shots I took with my old Canon are below. I piggybacked off of Mark's shoot using his lighting, so to be truthful, they are partially mine. I appreciate any commentary. The first picture is a dish I learned while staging with Joel Robuchon in Paris. His version is different but the genesis came from him. I call it Springtime Turban. It is a turban of pasta, morels, cepes and fava beans. The second dish is a Chilled Asparagus Salad with house made Pancetta, Parmesan Fondutta and 63 degree egg. Comments would be appreciated.

What's your oldest Canon EF lens?

I'll kick off with my Canon 28-70 f3.5-4.5 II :)

Datecode UC0500: Utsonomiya, 05/1988

I've also got the original hood (not shown).

Canon Lens Date Codes - How Old Is That Lens?

Beside the rear lens element of many (but not all) Canon lenses is a date code (as seen above) in the form of "UR0902". This code is also present on many other Canon products including camera bodies.

The first letter, "U", indicates that the lens was made in Canon's Utsunomiya, Japan factory. Prior to 1986, this letter is moved to the last position of the date code.

U = Utsunomiya, Japan
F = Fukushima, Japan
O = Oita, Japan

The second letter, "R", is a year code that indicates the year of manufacture. Canon increments this letter each year starting with A in 1986 and prior to that, A in 1960 without the leading factory code. Here is a table to make things simple:

A = 1986, 1960
B = 1987, 1961
C = 1988, 1962
D = 1989, 1963
E = 1990, 1964
F = 1991, 1965
G = 1992, 1966
H = 1993, 1967
I = 1994, 1968
J = 1995, 1969
K = 1996, 1970
L = 1997, 1971
M = 1998, 1972
N = 1999, 1973
O = 2000, 1974
P = 2001, 1975
Q = 2002, 1976
R = 2003, 1977
S = 2004, 1978
T = 2005, 1979
U = 2006, 1980
V = 2007, 1981
W = 2008, 1982
X = 2009, 1983
Y = 2010, 1984
Z = 2011, 1985

* assumption of continuation being made for future years.

The first two numbers, "09", is the month number the lens was manufactured in. Month 02 is February, month 11 = November. The leading zero of the month code is sometimes omitted.

The next two numbers, "02", are meaningless in determining how old a Canon lens is. This is a Canon internal code (that is occasionally omitted).

Upgrading from the Rebel XSi: Perpetual indecision

Hi y'all! I've been shooting with the Rebel XSi since dec 2009 and it has been my first and only DSLR. It's been a hard journey... other fancy cameras have tempted me but I'm proud to say I have held off! until now...

I got started by shooting birds in flight with the EF-S 55-250mm
http://www.flickr.com/photos/igphoto/sets/72157626186549397/

Then later moved on to high school football/portraits. Now in college, I continued with sports, portraits and events but more than ever I find myself no longer satisfied. The low-light performance of the XSi and the limit of only 1600 is definitely straining the relationship!

I shot a quidditch tournament with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS ii
http://www.flickr.com/photos/igphoto/sets/72157632938593319/

And as you can see, my keeper rates dropped significantly once it got dark and those 'keepers' weren't as sharp.

I have long pined for the 7D when it was regarded as the best for sports photographers but I fear the low light performance improvement won't be enough... at least when compared to the 6D.

I read that the 6D is not good for sports.. mainly recommended for landscape photographers. But surely, it is going to be tons better than the XSi right? For autofocus points, I only shoot with the center point anyways on the XSi so the lack of crosstype won't be something I'd miss. Same with the fps and the RAW buffer rate... if its better than the XSi then I don't think I'll mind. The big pain right now is the ISO performance.

But the jump to full frame means I'll have to give up the poor man's tele effect of a crop sensor camera.

On the otherhand, with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 is ii I have gotten terrible chromatic aberration and was told in the topic i made about it that it would be ameliorated with full frame sensor plus the 6D has that processing feature now.

And another thing to note is that I do want to try video on the slr but that's always going to come second to photos.

But refurbished 7d's are going for under 1k... but I don't want buyer's regret either. I also don't want to spend more than I need to. I say "I don't think I'll mind" but that could be wishful thinking.

What do you guys think?

lcd display on 6d

hi guys,

was just interested to know, what sort of processing is the canon 6d (or rough equivalent) doing to the photos before it displays it on the lcd display?

i ask because i took a reference photo of a nice sky the other evening, there were some subtle colours that i wanted to remember.

i know i shouldnt rely onthe lcd screen for colours or anything like that but a quick glance never hurts, i remember being happy with what i saw ( just a simple Av setting 100mm f2)

i downloaded the file which was a raw image, which has everything zeroed, so photos need a bit of processing, but the image i got was almost grey compared to what i saw on the lcd screen.and i had to process the raw in lightroom to look like the image from the back of my camera,as it was what i wanted it to look like! which seems totally stupid lol ive attached the files.

just for reference and for comparison id love to know what sort of processing is applied for the lcd output ?

sometimes digital photography is so darn backward lol

( the first photo is the raw no processing turned into a small jpeg, the second is the procssed image to look like what i saw on back of lcd screen and more what the actual sky looked like )

Bad Photography Rant

.
I know there are charlatans with cameras all over the place. And I know this isn't a forum for ranting about bad "photographers," but let this be a caution that if you don't have definite skills (and most here certainly DO) that it's not nice to take money from people for bad pictures.

Recently a member of my family I haven't seen in several years gave me a CD full of jpg images taken by a "professional" photographer. This person was paid $100 for two hours work taking pictures of two teen-age daughters and a couple of family portrait shots out on a seashore location. She dumped all the image files on a CD and gave them to my family member. She had been "recommended" by a hair dresser my aunt uses. Looking at the photographer's Web site she indicates she went to art schools and shot for magazines for several years. I wasn't exactly sure what my aunt wanted when she handed me the CD and asked me to "develop" the pictures and select the best 10 for printing.

Overall, the images are awful. Out of focus, grainy, even badly tilted horizons. The photographer used a Nikon D800 with a Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 lens. A little research suggests it is an inexpensive lens that has a reputation for generating noise on its own. The shoot day turned cloudy with a breeze and misty rain. Setting were typically ISO 2000 around f/4.5 to 5.6. Flying hair can be a good effect, yet this photographer made no attempt not to have it flying across their faces. There are dogs in some pictures (on laps, being held, etc.) and they look scared -- a look I've never seen in a dog's eyes. I was angry when I looked at the pictures and realized she took money from my aunt for this. She even had the audacity to include a document releasing the images for print -- but reassuring that she retained all rights.

When I talked with my aunt she finally admitted she was deeply disappointed with the pictures. She thought perhaps she may be wrong and the pictures really were good, but she wanted me to see them. I had to confirm for her that bad pictures are simply bad pictures. I did soften it by suggesting maybe the photographer was trying for a "soft focus" look with the girls. Also, maybe the tilted horizons were purposed to add "drama." I told her there wasn't much I was going to be able to do but that I would pick the best 10 and have them printed by a good printer.

I cleaned up the files as best I could -- sharpening, noise reduction, horizon straightening, etc. The lens even had mustache distortion that had to be corrected! Then I sent them off to Bay Photo for printing on metallic paper. I'm hoping for the best.

Sorry for the big rant, but bad photography is unfair, and it makes me angry. Not only is the $100 (plus cost for printing) gone, but the expectation of great pictures of cherished family members has also been stolen. The kids and their parents don't live on the seashore, and they can't be reassembled for a do over.

I've often encouraged inexperienced photographers here to take opportunities given -- but only with the explicit understanding that clients know what they can expect. If you're going to present yourself as a seasoned professional, you must produce professional results!

first paid gig need help

I am doing a friends birthday party of 4yr old twins. I am being paid and was told to get candids of games and group shots.

I was bringing the following and was curious if there are any suggestions, tips or lens/flash I should rent.

5d3
24-70 II
35mm Sigma 1.4
70-200 2.8II
600ex flash with stofen cap

I know that would cover it I assume but do not have anything longer than 35mm for shallow dof shots or just standard portraits. Also they want pictures of the cake and such. Just curious if there are any suggestions like the 100mm L macro, 50mm 1.2, 135mm f2. Those were lenses I was looking into anyway but do not want to buy just for this in a rush. I would rent one or none. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Or even tricks since I have a hard time balancing bounce flash for an even exposure. I know you here in the forum have said off camera flash but what do you do at a kids birthday party in a home without looking over the top?

Underwater Cameras

(Apologies if this is in the wrong place, I wasn't sure which area it should go).

I've got a trip to Jamaica coming up in a few months and was looking into underwater options to play around with. This isn't something particularly serious for me, so I'm not looking to spend a ton of money on it (so underwater housings for my 5d3 are out, even rentals are ~$600 for a week).

Does anyone have recommendations for underwater cameras on the cheap side (~$300)

Ideally, I would prefer the following:

- Manual exposure mode (I could also live with Av+exposure compensation)
- RAW support
- 24mm (FF equivalent) on the wide end of the lens

Don't really care if it's Canon or not (the D20 *seems* to shoot raw, but doesn't look like it has manual exposure, and is 28mm on the wide end).

Prefer my 1D Mk III to 5D Mk III, dollar for dollar

I almost bought one of the fantastic bargain 5D's yesterday. I sat staring at the screen, watching the count go from 111 sold to 122 sold in a matter of minutes. I looked at the price. I considered the warranty question, and the missing lens not in the box. I almost bought one, knowing full well I could always have sold it for more. I did not buy one. I considered the money I would still have. I thought about my 1D and decided, for my needs, I did not need a state of the art camera, although it would be nice. I am sure the new MkIII is a wonderful thing to hold and use. However, for me, my 10Mp 1D is fine. And I really enjoy using a pro body. So I passed, and let others buy one, or two or three for a quick profit. Maybe I should have considered the profit angle, but I didn't. Let's see how much time passes until we see a $2500 brand new 5D MkIII again. I am guessing Christmas.

New Canon Hi-pixel Medium format...?

So with all the rumours about the High megapixel body coming next year, what if canon has something really neat up their sleeves and it turns out to be medium format and square?? Is this a possibility?

Is there a gap in the market for a high-end Canon (low end in comparison to hasselblad) medium format in the £6000 - £8000 range? if you're going to pay more than that for medium format you might as well get a leaf/Phase 1/mamiya combo but a slightly less expensive system from canon could do well especially for product/advertising work which the 1D and 5D series are still very much just about getting away with it...

People are commenting that for a high megapixel full frame there'd be interference on the chip and the current lenses wouldn't be able to keep up with the quality needed so with a medium format camera comes a new line in larger chips and new super-duper lenses?

kinda makes sense. I'd like to shoot medium format again without having to take out a life time mortgage.

1DX- Custom settings not saving AF or shooting mode

:-[

I am trying to save several setups using the custom settings (C1, C2, C3). I place the camera in the settings I want, then go to the register custom settings, and register them. Great.

However, the AF settings and the shooting mode (H, L, single shot) are not saving. Exposure, Aperature, etc. all save, but not the other stuff. For me this is really the most important part! I can't find any information in the manual or online about what is going on. Any help would be wonderful!

Resolve Now Accepts Raw files from 5Dm3

From http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7075.0

DaVinci Resolve v9.1.5 will accept raw files shot on the 5dm3 and then converted with the various free raw2dng apps out there.

What does this mean?

Well rather than have an absolute dog of a workflow using raw sequences in AEX which take an aeon to compile even with a beefy workstation, you can now load your dng sequences into Resolve Lite, a free version of one of the most powerful colour grading tools out there, which only lacks a few of the features found in the full version (4k support which is irrelevant anyway, the noise reduction it has, which isn't).

So you can perform a rough grade of your material using tools which are immensely preferable to using adobe camera raw, or using lightroom for sequences (you can keyframe changes over time). Then output a high quality prores of DNxHD file and go into your NLE of choice. If you want, you can use those as proxies and return to resolve to perform a final grade off the raw files (using the transcodes as proxies).

Effectively this is the same as the BMC raw workflow. I haven't been able to test this (I've just moved to NZ and my workstation is halfway round the world in a shipping container - my 4 year old laptop is nowhere near up to spec to run resolve) but am looking forwards to having a play when it eventually arrives).

Sigma Service :)

Like a lot of photographers who use 50mm F/1.4 primes, I often wonder if it could be a little sharper wide open or focus a little more accurately. While I was getting to know my new 24-105 L zoom last month, I decided to send my Sigma 50/1.4 in to Sigma for a little TLC under warranty. I've had it for about two years.

On the repair request, I said that it was not as sharp as I wanted wide open and it did not focus as accurately as my Canon lenses. I figured that would challenge them a little.

I got the lens back exactly two weeks after I sent it, which means they had it in the shop about 3 working days, by my estimate. Pretty impressive.

The service invoice says they "adjusted af data"

If there is any improvement in performance, my methods are not adequate to detect it, but I do feel better knowing that the lens is properly calibrated. It's a confidence thing, you know.

This is still one of my favorite lenses, along with the Canon 85mm F/1.8.

EOS Film images

Every so often the question crops up.. what film camera should somebody wanting to get into film use.
A DSLR is always the correct answer of course, unless they are going large format. But I digress.

Anyway.

Post your film images.

EOS film images would be nice.

I'm going to have a rake through my scans and see if I can find anything..
...which I have, EOS A2e (EOS 5, see I had an EOS 5 before any of youse) and I think a crappy 35-80 lens. Ilford XP2 chromagenic.
