Focus Issues with EF 24-70mm 2.8 usm

So I know this lens has been criticized for having back focusing issues and the new version supposedly fixes those problems. However the prices for these lenses used and in good condition seemed to make sense. I shoot lots of landscapes and video so auto focus isn't' the biggest deal but ideally a lens like this would allow me to shoot more portraits and events, anyways thats beside the point.

Is there a good standard way to put this lens to the test and check how well the focus is functioning and how sharp it is?
I shoot with the 5D mkII which also doesn't have the greatest AF abilities.
But i'd just like to know if theres a good way to go about evaluating the lens because if it isn't up to par I can send it back and try a different one.

Sigma Macro 180mm f2.8 OS Canon TC modification

I just bought Sigma Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM and I noticed that Canon TC's cannot be used with it. Looks that Sigma has just added additional (too long) collar behind the rear lens. That collar will prevent use of Canon TC's. If collar would be just 1-2 mm shorter Canon TC's could be used.

Has anyone tried to cut that collar little bit shorter? I removed bayonet of the Sigma but I couldn't figure out how that collar is mounted. Maybe it has only threads that will keep it around the rear lens mount. That collar seems to be made of plastic so I believe that it is not the actual mount for the rear lens.

Surely modification can void warranty, but lets not care about that ;D

Move from 24-70 f/2.8L Mk I to 35mm F/1.4?

I'm considering selling my 24-70 f/2.8L MkI because it has gone practically unused since I got the 24-105 F/4L IS.

Now I'm considering getting a 35mm f/1.4 instead - either the Sigma or the Canon. At the moment I think I would prefer the Canon eventhough I've good experience with my Sigma 50 mm f/1.4.

I know these 35mm lenses have been discussed to death but now that for most people the initial love affair with the Sigma is probably over, I'd like to hear your *real world* thoughts on the matter of choosing between these two. Maybe you've had to make this choice yourself or even owned both lenses.

I know about the lab test data but prefer to hear from you some real world comparisons. These include portability, reliability, subjective quality etc etc. So please, your (subjective) opinions.

5D Mark II composition movement

I have recently brought a Canon EOS 5D Mark II second hand. A few weeks ago I shot a wedding and noticed some of my shots where not composed well, first I thought this was me not paying attention but after the wedding I noticed that even though I didn’t recompose my shots, something in the camera is moving and altering what I see through the view finder, this happens more often when shooting portrait rather than landscape. Any idea why this is happening? Is there something in my camera which needs to be fixed?

ND filters /waterfalls on 5D3

Just wondering how most people are metering with their 5d3 (or 5d2) while using various ND filters.

Will the 5d3's meter be able to see well enough through say a 3 or 6 stop ND filter to allow one to just shoot in aperture priority mode with one of these on? Or is it best to meter, figure out the extra shutter speed, put it in manual, set the speed then throw on the filter?

What are most people doing with the 5D3 and 10 stop ND filters?

I have not really used ND filters much, and will be travelling to a waterfall-rich area soon and don't want to blow it by making a bunch of noob mistakes.

Anybody know of any particularly good waterfall-shooting advice sites?

Thanks for any help!!

How much better would the 5D mkIV have to be for you to upgrade from your mkiii?

What upgraded feature would push you to get the mkIV?

    Votes: 30 25.4%

I'm a recent 5D mkiii cult member and I really like it. I'm not quite sure that I buy into all the hype that full frame takes your photos to the next level and you'll look back at your old crop sensor photos with disgust and loathing. But I do like the mkiii. I feel it is a more than adequate upgrade from my 60D and it was well worth the money it cost to upgrade (Cost of mkiii minus the money I received from the sale of my 60D).

I haven't fully tested the low light performance of the mkiii though I will acknowledge it is superior to the 60D and the frames per second is more than satisfactory, and the auto focus is excellent... Basically I don't have any REAL complaints about the mkiii where as I did have some issues with the 60D (not afma, low light performance, rubber grips starting to come off, etc.) and I didn't want to upgrade to the 5D mkii because of the AF performance and the lack of the cross type peripheral AF points and the meh shots per second rate.

But my contention is that the 5D mkiii is practically the perfect mix of performance and durability for me. So why wouldn't I keep it for 7 years (when then mkV is released and presumably the mkiii is about to die)? What features would drive me to consider upgrading prematurely and by extension, what features would drive yall to upgrade?

The launch price for the mkiii body was $3500 which sounded astronomical at the time. If the mkiv's launch price is $4000, but you sell the mkiii for $1700 making the upgrade "only" $2300.

So the aforementioned question is 'How much better would the mkiv have to be for you to upgrade from the mkiii'? And I'm sorry that this basically excludes all non-mkiii owners, but ya'll haven't drank the Kool-aid yet.

Is the EOS M discontinued?

We’ve received a lot of emails about B&H Photo showing the EOS M w/22mm STM kit as “discontinued”. This has worried a few people that did order cameras that were backordered. I think it’s listed as discontinued on their site so no more can be ordered.

We spoke to B&H Photo today and have been told that all backorders will be fulfilled at the sale price. I didn’t get a date as to when that was happening.

The EOS M is likely reaching end of life and a new EOS M camera should be announced shortly. A second EOS M camera will be coming sometime in the fall we’re told.

You can still get great deals on the EOS M body with the EF-M 18-55 IS STM lens.

Cheap telephoto lens

Hi guys,

i'm looking for a telezoom lens. Until i can afford the 70-200mm 2.8 II, i want to have solution to get past the waiting time. I'm doing sports photography, mainly outdoor soccer. Sometimes i wanna shoot some birds or wild stuff like... birds of prey or deers. In conclusion, there are 2 lenses in the race: the old Canon 70-300mm and the Tamron 70-300mm VC USD.
Which one to choose? The cheaper Tamron or the Canon with the better optics?
Which one is your favorite, because i'm having a hard time with this question.

PS: The Canon 70-200mm f4 is not in the race due to expensiveness.

PPS: 1Ds II and EOS 40D (don't know the american term)

Canon Germany just posted a video on their YouTube page saying “Your audience is waiting for you – 07/31/2013″. No other country has any kind of teaser for that day as of yet, though we could see them pop up over the next few days.

This type of ad seems to indicate something on the “consumer” side, more so than a “prosumer” product. We’ve also seen teasers like this in the past that are strictly for a regional service or event or maybe it’s a Canon Instagram clone.

Different new lenses?

On the website NorthernLightImages there's a mock up of a 42mm f1.2 lens and the description clearly labels it as a fake. But it did get me thinking about what if Canon (or the N word) started to rethink their lens lines. A fast
42mm would be wonderful (especially with APS sized sensors). What other "new" lenses would you like to see.
It appears the zooms killed the 150mm focal length. Could you make a "less expensive" 250mm or 350mm (the
old Leica R longer primes)? Any other candidates?

The Canon EOS 8D
Over the last couple of weeks we’ve seen a few rumors for a Canon EOS 8D camera body. It first appeared on a Russian retailers web site (We won’t link because I think they’re just fishing for traffic) around the time of the EOS 70D announcement.

Today, we see a spec list published for the Canon EOS 8D on a Chinese retailer’s web site, they are below.

Body features: APS-C size digital SLR

Effective pixels: 16.2 million

Mode of operation: full manual operation

Video Interface: AV Interface

Flash Type: External

External flash (hot shoe): Yes

Focus Points: 45 points

CR’s Take

I file this under nonsense, as there is no Canon EOS 8D in development. If this leaked to a Russian & Chinese retailer, it would have leaked many other places as well. Secondly, the “7D” moniker will continue with the next version of the camera and Canon will not be adding another APS-C DSLR to their lineup.

I resist posting this sort of stuff, however it’s now making the rounds so I have to.

Travel photos and help 5Dc, 40D or a rebel for beginer?

Much to my surprise my little brother just expressed an interest in learning photography! He has a go-pro 3 black edition which he uses to make surfing videos but I suspect the root of this new found interest is his new girlfriend who shoots a bit of film. Keen to encourage this new found enthusiasm I want to buy him a DSLR set up for his birthday and would appreciate some advise from the experts on this forum as I've not shot with some of the cameras I'm considering.
A couple of points to keep in mind:
1) I'm not rolling in cash but my girlfriend and I can probably stretch to round 400 quid, anything over that and he'll have to chip in
2) We're about to go travelling through Central America together for 6 weeks so whatever gear he is going to get is going to take a bit of a kicking (also 1 or two lenses only)
Our trip is why I'm going to get him a DSLR rather than a film camera and a fridge full of film.

so far I was considering
1)a 5D classic: not a camera I've used but one I've heard a lot of good things about. probably with a 28-135 lens of some type (will recommend he also picks up a nifty 50 or a shorty 40)
Advantage: image quality, rugged
Disadvantage: body cost, lack of good cheep wide zoom options, something about some 5d's having a wonky shutter?

2) a 40D and a 17-85mm I used to have a 40D and loved it before it got stolen in Peru. Not used the 17-85 but heard good things (again will recommend he also picks up a nifty 50 or a shorty 40)
Advantage: dual control wheels, magnesium alloy body
Disadvantage: no cheep normal prime

3) A rebel of some type: Not familiar with the rebel line at all. Everything since 500D shoots video?
Lenses: again tempted to go with the 17-85 as I cant afford the good EF-S lens zoom with F2.8 (17-55?)
Advantage: Video, Cheapest body option, smallest and lightest
Disadvantage: might not survive the trip, Single control wheel (A hindrance for learning?)

4)? is there something I've overlooked?

So what would you do in my situation. Is there a gem of a lens or a combo that I've overlooked?

All help greatly appreciated!

Here's some travel photos to counter the gear and request heavy nature of the thread

Sigma 18-35mm 1.8

Hi all,

The new hotness from Sigma seems to be getting some pretty decent reviews so far - looks like a solid addition to the Art line-up. Personally I'm invested in FF kit so I won't be getting this, but if I were looking for an APSC zoom it'd be this or the Canon 17-55 2.8 is...

poor battery connection and delay in consecutive shutter clicks

My Canon Mark iii keeps getting a delay between shutter clicks when shooting in continuous mode. It seems like it may not be getting full power from the battery but I have replaced the battery as well as the SD card but that doesn't make a difference. It doesn't do it all the time but will take a few rounds continuous shooting then revert to this slow odd click noise for each shutter. Any idea's what may be going on? It's only a few months old and I really don't feel like trying to get it fixed through the warranty.

6d focusing screen comparison please

No, sorry, I don't have such a comparison nor have I been able to find one.

I'm about to move (a long overdue move at that) from a D-80 to a 6D, I never ever expect to own another Nikon.
I've read 6D reviews, specs and pixel peeped until my own focus blurs, the 6D sounds just about perfect for me, I expect to start with just the 40 mm pancake.
---
So, here are my questions
.
About the focusing screens;
Standard is the Eg-A II, Standard Precision Matte.
Optional is the Eg-D, Precision Matte with Grid. I like a grid in the finder, although lack of a grid is in no way a deal killer.
Also Optional is the Eg-S, Super Precision Matte. SUPER PRECISION, I really like the sound of that!!

I'm anxious for input from 6D (and 5D II?) users that have used two or more of the three Canon screens, I suppose I shouldn't be close minded about aftermarket options.

At wider lens apertures, is the Super Precision Matte Eg-S significantly sharper showing focus than the merely Precision Eg-D?

At smaller lens apertures, say f-4, f-5.6 and smaller, do either the Eg-D or Eg-S darken objectionably to the point of uselessness?

Anything else I'm not thinking to ask?
---
A little insight to my camera operation style, I go back to the film days, the only things I miss about film are the loading, rewinding and release tricks to get multiple exposures. And I'm quite happy to miss them, right along with automotive carburetor and valve adjustments though I still far prefer driving a stick.

Autofocus to me is a gimicky luxury, I do not expect autofocus to take photos for me. At the first sign of autofocus wavering, manual I engage. I'd much rather manual focus than dink around with shifting autofocus points instead of activating the shutter. I have little (read, no) interest in even learning how to shift autofocus points, yeah, I'm that old.

70-200mm 2.8 IS II vs 100-400mm

I have an interesting dilemma that I’d like all your experts opinion on. Quite recently I’ve upgraded from a Nikon DX camera to a Canon 5DIII, what a joy this is! Only I have to, of course, get a complete set of lenses as well. Since my name is not Rockefeller budget is an issue.
What I already have is a 50mm 1.4 and recently I bought the 17-40mm 4.0. I’m really pleased with both lenses but I miss a telelens. My primary use would be for travelling, I do get to go to the Kruger National Park in South-Africa every second year so I need some range, I want to use it for other travelling as well as sports events as well. My thoughts move between a 70-200mm II lens with a 2x convertor for the long range (don’t need it all the time) or a 100-400mm lens. I’ve read on this site that there’s a rumour that this last lens might be replaced soon, is this worth waiting for?

Using vintage Braun Paxette lenses with EOS bodies

Good morning, forum!

In the german "Digicamclub"-forum for manuel lenses on digital cameras we developped a special adapter to use the ancient M39-Lenses for the "teacher's Leica" Paxette, manufactured by Braun, Nürnberg also with Canon EOS bodies. There are Lenses from Steinheil (Muenchen), Schneider (Kreuznach), Roeschlein (Kreuznach), Enna (München), Braun and Staeble (Nürnberg) and other well known german manufacturers on the market.

Due to the longer flange-distance (compared to LTM) of 44mm it is possible to make adapters which allow infinity-focusing correctly.

If interested you will find an actual information (in german) here:

Thread -> http://www.digicamclub.de/showthread...998#post195998

Wer mehr über das Thema und seine Anfänge erfahren möchte:

Im Digicamclub gibt es darüber hinaus - Stichwort VNex - einiges mehr zur Verwendung dieser Objektive am NEX-System.

If there is any interest contact me, some of these adapters are still available.

85L or 135L?

Alright everyone, I shoot portraits and weddings and here are my current lenses which I use on my 5DM3:

24-105 (great kit lens, but I might sell it)
24-70 f2.8 MK2
50 f1.4
(Sigma) 12-24 - some people don't like this, but I think I got a good copy
70-200 f2.8 MK2

I'm trying to find a reason to buy either the 85mm or 135mm. Which should I buy? I know I have that length covered, but they're such celebrated primes that I'd just learn to zoom with my feet more and I know my results would be good.

So, here's my question. Both are very well-loved in the photog world, especially with portrait shooters. Which should I get? Or, should I be considering another prime altogether?

Thanks in advance!

Fantasy Dayhiking Kit

I will preface this post by saying this kit would be about 25lbs and $25,000 but its fun to dream ;D
So 2 bodies, 4 lenses.....

Future 7D2
Future Big megapixel/full-frame of choice
21 Zeiss
24-70 II
70-200(whatever incarnation works for you)
200-400(drool) would only need to take off the 7D2 if you needed 200-320

Probably .1% could carry or afford this but it came to me hiking the other day and thought i would share because having the ability to get basically a 21- 900mm focal length (unless my math is wrong) with incredible IQ sounds awesome. Discuss :)

From Magic Lantern

The Magic Lantern team is letting the world know that they are at the beginning of a new function for the 5D Mark III and EOS 7D. Apparently they’ve figured out a way to boost dynamic range by 3 stops by using a new way of making a photograph by using ISO 100 for some of the vertical lines and ISO 1600 for the rest of it. Sounds wild to us, not sure how they’re doing that. There will be a process to combining the lines of 100/1600 ISO to give you the full resolution file.

From Alex at ML

Works for both photos and raw videos on Canon EOS 5D Mark III. On Canon EOS 7D, photo only (since it can’t do raw video).

What are the benefits? more dynamic range (less shadow noise).

The functionality was not really in Canon firmware, but in the chip that samples the sensor. Canon firmware does not make any use of it (they just set both ISO “registers” to the same value). It was implemented on the hardware side though (and that’s why it works only on these 2 cameras, because only they have two ISO amplifiers).
