Is the EOS M discontinued?
We’ve received a lot of emails about B&H Photo showing the EOS M w/22mm STM kit as “discontinued”. This has worried a few people that did order cameras that were backordered. I think it’s listed as discontinued on their site so no more can be ordered.

We spoke to B&H Photo today and have been told that all backorders will be fulfilled at the sale price. I didn’t get a date as to when that was happening.

The EOS M is likely reaching end of life and a new EOS M camera should be announced shortly. A second EOS M camera will be coming sometime in the fall we’re told.

You can still get great deals on the EOS M body with the EF-M 18-55 IS STM lens.

Something coming July 31, 2013?
Canon Germany just posted a video on their YouTube page saying “Your audience is waiting for you – 07/31/2013″. No other country has any kind of teaser for that day as of yet, though we could see them pop up over the next few days.

This type of ad seems to indicate something on the “consumer” side, more so than a “prosumer” product. We’ve also seen teasers like this in the past that are strictly for a regional service or event or maybe it’s a Canon Instagram clone.

This is the ad

The Canon EOS 8D
Over the last couple of weeks we’ve seen a few rumors for a Canon EOS 8D camera body. It first appeared on a Russian retailers web site (We won’t link because I think they’re just fishing for traffic) around the time of the EOS 70D announcement.

Today, we see a spec list published for the Canon EOS 8D on a Chinese retailer’s web site, they are below.

Body features: APS-C size digital SLR

Effective pixels: 16.2 million

Mode of operation: full manual operation

Video Interface: AV Interface

Flash Type: External

External flash (hot shoe): Yes

Focus Points: 45 points

CR’s Take
I file this under nonsense, as there is no Canon EOS 8D in development. If this leaked to a Russian & Chinese retailer, it would have leaked many other places as well. Secondly, the “7D” moniker will continue with the next version of the camera and Canon will not be adding another APS-C DSLR to their lineup.

I resist posting this sort of stuff, however it’s now making the rounds so I have to.

From Magic Lantern
The Magic Lantern team is letting the world know that they are at the beginning of a new function for the 5D Mark III and EOS 7D. Apparently they’ve figured out a way to boost dynamic range by 3 stops by using a new way of making a photograph by using ISO 100 for some of the vertical lines and ISO 1600 for the rest of it. Sounds wild to us, not sure how they’re doing that. There will be a process to combining the lines of 100/1600 ISO to give you the full resolution file.

From Alex at ML

Works for both photos and raw videos on Canon EOS 5D Mark III. On Canon EOS 7D, photo only (since it can’t do raw video).

What are the benefits? more dynamic range (less shadow noise).

The functionality was not really in Canon firmware, but in the chip that samples the sensor. Canon firmware does not make any use of it (they just set both ISO “registers” to the same value). It was implemented on the hardware side though (and that’s why it works only on these 2 cameras, because only they have two ISO amplifiers).
