500mm or 600mm lens on a monopod.

While I'm planning on buying a 600mm lens in the next 6 months, my current 300mm (plus, on occasion, the 1.4x TC) with a gripped 5D3 feels okay on a monopod (for birding/wildlife).

However, not having used a 600mm before, is the monopod approach still ideal for such a large lens, or am I entering tripod territory?

Sorry for the possible lame question, but I'm just imagining the extra weight adds to the momentum when tracking, and in the heat of the moment, those BIF movements can get fairly active ;)

Bright highlights clipping to black / blue in video mode?

Yesterday I was filming a wedding with a new video light (1000watt lowel DP light), and I noticed that the brightest part of the light appeared black with bits of blue in my footage rather than white. (See sample jpeg)

Can anyone explain this? I was shooting with a 5D mkII.

<strong>New EOS</strong>

As previously posted, Canon will launch the EOS 70D this evening.</p>
<p>The camera will come as a body only package or kitted with either the EF-S 18-55 IS STM or the EF-S 18-135 IS STM. Below is a screenshot with the price of the kit with the EF-S 18-135 IS STM in Canada. The USA price should be within $100 of this.</p>
<p>Noted in the screenshot below is the September 13, 2013 release date, we’ll see if that turns out to be true. We’re hoping the camera launches well before that date.</p>

Big white lenses: Foot replacement or Lens plate?

hello,

having bought a 500mm f/4L IS II and using a Markins M20 head - which for at least this year will NOT be complemented with objects named Wimberely, Gimbal, Sidekick etc - I wonder if the best choice is a lens foot replacement or a lens plate. Since a friend is coming from the States where almost everything is cheaper I decided to test both! So I will get Kirk LP-58 and Kirk LP-55SG - the reason for Kirk is my positive experience with their Camera plates. I will have them in about 2 weeks.

I have the following thoughts:

1. LP-58 comes with 2 1/4" screws and a 3/8" adapter.

My 500mm requires 3/8 and 1/4 screws (one per category) so the adapter will have to be used. Do you have experience with these adapters? Are they safe to use?

For example when you decide to remove the plate which one will unscrew first adapter with the screw or just the screw first and leave the adapter in the lens plate and me scratching my head wondering how to fix it

2. LP-55SG means removal of the original foot. Will the screwing of the new foot be secure? Canon suggest to leave this to them which of course is silly so what is your opinion? Is the replacement safe? I guess it's both safe and trivial...

On RRS site they say: "If your mounting screws loosen over time, consider using a drop of LocTite 242 for better security. "

There is nothing like that on Kirk's site but I think RRS are being more sincere...

3. Any comparison between Lens foot replacement and use of lens plate?

Sorry for possibly silly questions but I am newbie as far as big white lenses are concerned.

YN-622C and 600ex-rt setup question

I currently have 2x 600EX-RT's and a pair of YN-622C's being given to me in the next couple weeks. What I would like to know is...

Will I be able to setup one 600EX-RT to fire with the YN-622C's, and be able to use that 600EX-RT to wirelessly fire the second 600EX-RT? I know I could just buy a third YN-622C transceiver, but would prefer to put the cash toward something else if I can.

EOS 70D Video Features?

Are there any rumors about the offered specs of the video features being included with the 70D? Any chance for 1080/60p with the standard firmware?

Hoping for some improvements, updates, or features that make this worth looking at. Shooting video with a T4i is often easier than a 7D/5D these days, especially with the rotational touchscreen and STM lens support (although QUITE limited selection). This feature does seem to be moving to the 70D, but hoping there's more improvements aside from that...

Amazon.com PULLED the 600EX-RT?

I just sold my old 580s and PocketWizard gear on eBay, and went over to Amazon to upgrade to the ST-E3 and 600EX-RT, and found this...

Item Under Review

While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here. (Thanks for the tip!)

We're working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

SOURCE: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-600EX-RT-Speedlite-Flash-Black/dp/B007FH1KX2

Does anyone know what this is about? After further digging, I've found there are a lot of people unhappy with the overheat protection kicking in way too soon on the 600's, ruining gigs in the field. Is this related? It also sounds like Canon has been unresponsive to this problem.

Now I'm really nervous about moving to the 600's with all of this weirdness surrounding the product. Can anyone shine some light on what's going on?

Thanks!

Gitzo tripod or no?

It seems like Gitzo is kind of universally accepted as "the best" when it comes to tripods. But if I try my hardest to ignore the fanboy-esque reviews and comments I see about them online, and don't let myself be tempted by their slick branding materials, it seems like there has to be a better and cheaper alternative.

Currently I have a manfrotto (it was around $100). I'm pretty sure it's made out of aluminum. It is sturdy even with my 5d3 w/ 70-200 on it, and that's probably the largest rig I'd ever have on a tripod unless I can afford the 200mm f2 IS someday lol. But the head isnt changable, there is no level, and the head sinks too low when I tilt the body on its side (even when it's as tight as possible).

I like the Gitzo traveler tripod (gt1542t). The weight, max/min height is cool, weight limit is good, but the price is pretty steep even for that one at $670. I went to a local camera shop and looked at them in person, ready to buy one if it proved to be on par with the hype online. The rubber foot stops seemed loose on most of them. One model's legs slid completely out and detached. Small problems, and possibly only because they were abused as floor models. But still, considering the price and their "...forever" tag line, I lost confidence in them. I searched about those issues online and found reviews about the same thing happening to other people.

Does anyone have a tripod in mind that they swear by... built to last, useful features.... lightweight is a plus, but not necessary? Was my experience coincidence and is the Gitzo really as great as it's cracked up to be?? Or is my gut right, and they are over hyped?

Used 300 2.8 L IS Mk I

Hey all,

Hopefully will be picking up my first big white soon. There are a couple of sellers in the area. One has a UV date code in very good condition the other is a US date code in pristine condition. Both are about the same price.

So my question is -- the US (2004) vs the UV (2007) -- is there any reason (USM motor, aperture control etc.) that a person would pick the lens with newer electronics over the older lens or is date code fairly irrelevant? Both lenses are supposed to have perfect glass, no internal dust or fungus. The few scuffs and scrapes on the UV lens are just cosmetic on the body.

Anybody know of any quality control issues with any of the runs of the 300 2.8?

Recommendations?

Thanks,

Ryan

<p><strong>We’ll know tonight

</strong>We’ve received word that the new Canon EOS 70D which is right around the corner will set the benchmark for ISO performance from a crop camera.</p>
<p>That bit of information will make a lot of people happy, as it may mean Canon is ready to make a jump back into the top end of sensor and processor development.</p>

IQ of Sigma 50-500mm F4,5-6,3 DG OS HSM - Your experience about it

I have a problem with my Canon 100-400 as it needs much power to change the focal length. The push/pull mechanism was repaired last year, but ist ist difficult to change the focal length if you photograph passing and fast moving objects.

As Canon will not release the rotating zoom in the near future, I want to ask, if the Sigma 50-500mm F4,5-6,3 DG OS HSM would be an good alternative?
It is an rotoating zoom with an IS too.
Does anybody own this lens? What is your experience of this lens?

Much thanks

NP-E3 - NiMh-accupack for 1Ds ...

Hello,

I have the problem, that my accumulators for my 1Ds become old. Replacement is necessary, but from which source? Canon sells them for more then 100€ in germany, there are many other suppliers on the market, are there any experiences in the community which brand should be avoided and which is good? I order also in the US, that's no problem if it is worth tax and fee.

Why I also took film to Europe

I assume most forum members use film either rarely or never. I am in the rarely category. But I did take my film camera (1N) on a recent trip to Europe as well as my digital (5D2) which I used most of the time. Main reason is there were a couple of spots I wanted to do timed double exposures and only my film camera has mutliple exposure capabilities. (I know some of the newer digital bodies have this and I would be curious to know if it works as well as film).

My technique was to do a first shot with some daylight left at sunset, underexposing a couple stops, then wait for the night lights and do a second shot for the lights on the same frame of film. The second place I used this, Dover Beach and Castle (England), did not come out as well as I had hoped. And the time between the first and second shutter click was much longer than I anticipated - two and a half hours. (I wanted to do the day shot before the sun went behind a big hill causing shadows). But the first place I used this, Notre Dame Cathedral (Paris, France) turned out exactly as I had hoped. It was only about half an hour between the first and second click. The first shot captured some blue reflections in the water and also the red glow in the lower clouds. Immediately after the second click I did another single exposure of the night shot to compare and there is no comparison. The double exposure blows it away.

I used Ektar 100 and it is amazing how good the latest 100 ISO films are. I enlarged it to 40x60 inches and it looks great! (Had the film scanned high res at the lab I work at http://www.jonesphoto.com/ ).

Thanks for looking and I would be interesting in seeing other multiple exposure efforts (both film and digital).

For all you wedding photogs out there...

Ok, here we go again for your sound advice. I have started out as an assistant wedding photographer not too long ago, and my goal is to become a primary wedding Photog (disclaimer: this is still a side gig & I have a full time job, but goal is to be full time wedding photog). Currently my gears are:

1) 5D Mark II
2) Sigma 35 mm f/1.4
3) Canon 50 mm f/1.8 II
4) Canon 24-105 mm f/4
5) Canon 70-200 mm f/2.8 II

I am saving up to purchase my next gear...should I aim to buy:

1) 5D Mark III
or
2) Canon 24-70 f/2.8 II (if I choose this option, I would sell my 24-105)

I know the price difference between these options could be a swing of $2k, but that's not the main issue. Priority here is practicality and usefulness.

Initially I thought of purchasing lenses first, but the thought of a 2nd body is very intriguing because I have found swapping lenses is a bit of a hassle and could miss some important opportunities.

Thanks again!

Repair Shop for Old EF Lenses?

Looking for some recommendations if I need to have some older EF lenses repaired. For instance, my trusty EF 20-35/2.8L has developed a rattle inside that sounds suspiciously like a loose element. I live in the Midwest USA but no problem in shipping anywhere in the States. If you have had good luck with any shop(s), would appreciate contact info. Thanks in advance. (Apologies if this thread has been asked before. If so, where can I find previous info?)

Body upgrade - Florida trip

Hi all!

I have been looking around for an upgrade of my current 450D bodies for some time now.
First one, then two 450Ds have been in my ownership since the release in 2008. I learned a lot from them, but I think I'm ready to step up.

I will visit Florida this summer for a two week trip. Things I miss about the 450D are the colours and details. I’m afraid I will be disappointed by something that could have been prevented.

Two bodies I'm still fighting with; the 7D and 6D.
These are actually very different from eachother, but I find the desicion hard.

I really like the 6D. It's something totally different (fullframe) and I can start to learn new things. The 16-35 is usually my walk-a-round lens, which would become quite wide. Is this fun in Florida, or is even the 35mm impractical without the crop-factor? Another advantage is the SD-capability. I wouldn't have to buy new cards as the 450D uses SDs too.
One camera 'below' the 6D seems to be the 7D, in my opinion. It does have a faster AF-system and a higher frame rate. But how much of an upgrade is it from my 450D? Advantages of the 7D are of course the crop-factor and the lower price (1699€ vs. 1049€ after cash back).

Which one would you pick and why?
I actually shoot all kind of things. The main focus for now is Florida, but I do shoot some sports sometimes. But even the 6D seems like an upgrade regarding sports compared to my 450D.

A small list of my current gear could be useful;
- 16-35mm f/2.8L II
- 50mm 1.8
- 70-200mm f/2.8
- 580EX II

Thank you very, very much for any input.

Kind regards,
Jerome

Focusing Screens for better Manual Focus with 5D Mark III

In general, I have been very pleased with my Canon 5DIII. However, the one weakness that I have finally addressed is the use of a manual focusing screen. I wanted to let folks here know in case this was an issue for them.

Scenario:

I have several Zeiss Lenses and use Canon tilt-shift lenses that are all manual focus. While the focus confirmation "works" and allows me to achieve accurate focus (especially with the micro adjustment), I find the manual focusing process distracting with focus points and the focus indicator being the prime means of verifying focus when I am concentrating on the image. I longed for a good "old fashioned" microprism where I can simply look at the subject and focus the lens until it looks sharp and the microprisms are clear. This is less of an issue with my tilt-shift lenses as I almost always use live-view with the camera on a tripod. This is real issue with my Zeiss lenses that I focus hand-held, especially the 85mm.

I found a source for focusing screens from a review story linked to the Zeiss website; the provider can be found at <dead link removed by mod>. I believe the gentleman who runs this is based in Taiwan. He custom cuts Canon 1-series focusing screens to fit the 5DIII and includes installation tools and shims to achieve proper focus. In addition, he provides very clear instructions how to install the screen - it is fairly simple, if a somewhat nervous, exercise.

I have been using his microprism screen in my 5DIII for a month and am very satisfied with its performance. I did not need to use any shims as the thickness of the screen is exactly the same as the standard screen in my 5DIII. I have easily verified this by focusing the camera on a tripod and examining the image with magnified live view.

By turning the display of AF illumination points off in the viewfinder (custom settings anyone?), I now have a simple way to configure the camera for excellent manual focus at flick of a switch. It has changed the way I use my manual lenses and greatly enhanced my experience with the 5DII, which was already sky-high.

If you have the same manual focus issue that I do, this could be helpful for you.

A side note: after going through this, I have arrived at the conclusion that the only reason Canon did not provide interchangeable screens on the 5DIII is to maintain enough "separation" between it and the 1DX. I don't make this statement lightly as I have great respect for Canon and its products. However, the removal of the 5DIII screen only requires two screws and is a simple affair. Canon could have provided interchangeable screens for the 5DIII at low incremental cost if they wanted to.. I am thankful that I have an alternative..

I hope this is helpful for others..

Kit for California trip

Next month my wife, 14-year old son and I are flying to California to spend two weeks. The purpose of the trip is to attend my nieces wedding. Following the wedding my extended family has rented a large home in Santa Barbara to have a week long reunion. The final week of the trip will be visiting Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks with just my wife, son and a nephew for lots of hiking, camping and photography.

So, week one I'll be primarily enjoying the company of my extended family. Most photography will be indoors or outdoor outings and activities, 95% people shots and portraits. Week two will be entirely outdoors and mostly landscapes and my immediate family enjoying the parks.

I plan to take my 6D and S100 as a pocketable backup. My lens choices are:

24 1.4 L (loan offered by a friend)
50 1.4
135 2.0 L
85 1.8
24-105 L
24-70 2.8 II (just purchased yesterday)
70-200 2.8 II
70-300 L (offered as a loan by a friend)
430EXII speedlight
90EX speedlight (used for on-camera optical master/fill)

I would like to limit myself to 2-4 lenses and the speedlites as the other luggage will be considerable. This is a family trip first and a photography expedition second. When taking overnight hikes and camping, we will leave much of our luggage and gear locked in the rental vehicle, as we will need to travel light. I'll probably only take 1 or possibly 2 lenses for the long hikes.
