From Canon France

The fine people at Canon France sent me a tweet explaining yesterdays mention about large sensor compacts. Their reasoning seems reasonable, however it appears they’ve been migrating their web site for 6 months or so. Hopefully they aren’t paying the folks in charge of that by the hour.

I have talked to a few other sources, and none of them had heard anything as of yet about a cool big sensor compact.

One more thing….

Canon is not overly happy with us at the moment, especially one specific country (not France). However, nothing we do here is about being malicious or to hurt anyone. As such, we apologize to anyone that may have been affected in a negative way by yesterdays posts.

Comparing AF-tracking 7D, 60D and 70D

Hi,

My needs: APS-C-body that will track birds in flight accurately.

The recent talks claim the coming 70D would be equipped with the AF of the 7D. Most people seem to agree that this would make the 70D better than the 60D. However, my experiences with the 7D and 60D were different. I sold my 7D because I got many more hits of birds in flight with the 60D, simply because its tracking abilities were much more accurate, regardless of settings. I should mention that I am more than reasonably experienced with the matter.

I think the new 70D specs are great, but resorting to my personal experience, I'd wish it had retained the AF of the 60D rather than working with the unreliable and bitchy 7D's.

Anyone besides me had a chance to compare 7D and 60D in the field side by side?

Any of those actually would confirm the 7D is better?

In the future, I'd be thankful for any direct comparisons of AF among 70D and the other cameras, even including EOS 1D Mark IV (which is clearly better for birds than the 60Ds from my experience, bjut too heavy for some purposes).

Cheers

Canon 40D to 5D Classic. Good upgrade?

Turns out I won't have the budget for the Canon 6D but I know a photographer that wants to sell a 5D Classic that was recently serviced by Canon not too long ago. The whole reason I want to go from a crop camera format to full frame is to print big. I asked a friend that has a 5D and 5D Mark II if I could obtain 20x30" prints from the 5D Classic and he said yes, easily. I'm assuming he means at 300 dpi since that is what WHCC uses.

So since I don't have the means to jump to a newer full frame Canon, the 5D Classic would be a good upgrade?

Need a new Body- nothing available- wtf Canon

Any new news on when a new canon body might appear..? I mean anything?

Im running my t2i into the ground...and the 72100 looks delish but im not switching. Love my t2i and dont want to see it lose its life before an new body - at nice high intro price becomes available.

(Cant believe the 60d and 7d are still on the market. Neither are options for me. 6d is the same.)

Was thinking ( lot) about a t4i, but the prices are a bit too high for my tastes. I may have to go this route as a holdover body, but im just not sure thats a wise decision.

What is a portrait shooter that cant afford a 5d3 to do?

70D ante portas?

http://www.canonwatch.com/

From readers, we have to provide information about the new Canon products next.

• New product next Canon seems to be a EOS 70D.
• And Kit with EF-S18-55mm IS STM, Kit with EF-S18-135mm IS STM is prepared lens kit (because it is information from overseas ※, might be different from the kit in Japan).
• Battery Grip BG-E14 is prepared.

This is the information from the person who has received to provide correct information several times in the past. New product next to the Canon it seems expensive can become and related products EOS 70D.

For the presentation time of 70D, there was a rumor a variety so far, seems to be the story of the destination so apparently. In addition, the new interchangeable lens at the same time as 70D may or may not appear, it is unclear at the moment.

EF mount vs F mount and adapter

Hello, guys. I'm really looking into the Samyang/Bower/Rokinon manual lenses and I was wondering if there was any disadvantages in using a 35$ F to EF mount adapter from B&H and getting the Nikon F mount version of the lens. The reason behind this is that I have old Nikon film cameras and it would be cool if I can use inexpensive fast primes with them. If the EF version is significantly better on a 5D Mark II, I would go for the EF version.

Thanks!

Canon 6D and Sunpak RD2000 - ettl not working

Hello,

I bought my sunpak RD2000 to use with my canon 40D and it was ok but it is not working correctly with my new 6D. The flash power is always at maximum. I tried the 6D with a 430ex and everything is fine.

The 6D is not present in the compatibilty chart on sunpak website so I am not so surprise but ....

Is there somebody having experience with this combo ?

Thanks a lot

Request for advice: SIGMA 20mm F/1.8 EX DG Aspherical RF for Canon FF?

Hi everyone,

Tested my 16-35 F/2.8 USM II and my 50 f/1.4 on the 5D3 wide open at low light and 51k ISO. The 50 f/1.4 had the edge exposure value wise. As I took the pictures at about 20mm I thought I could gain some aperture using a Sigma 20 F/1.8. I read the reviews at photozone.de (see Nikon part). They were not very flattering. But due to the price I just think, why not? Is there anybody out there shooting either the 20 or 24mm siggy?

Thank you for any advice
Peter

Medical joint overload by heavy dlsr?

Currently I seem to be getting into a chronical a medical condition because my equipment seems to be too heavy for the way I handle it: The whole 60d+70-300L+600rt-flashbracket package rests on the last joint of my ring finger, and my physician advises me strongly to change the way I shoot or stop doing it, at least for 8-10h straight every other day.

Problem is: I don't know how to even the load on my hand, esp. with the flash bracket because I cannot attach a hand strap at the same time. There are lots of people with expensvie (i.e. heavy) equipment on CR, and I'd like to ask you for your advice:

* Where does the whole camera load sit with you (with me it's the ring finger and a bit of the index finger of the right hand)? Do you carry the weight rather with the left hand that holds the lens?

* Does a battery grip help to even the load because you can grab the camera with the whole hand?

* Does a larger grip like 5d2/3 vs 60d/6d help because you need to cramp the hand less?

Edit: Using a monopod is not possible for what I'm doing...

Seqoia National Park - On Film

So here's my attempt at a few (somewhat hurried) landscapes when I was visiting Seqoia National Park a few weeks ago. Shot with Mamiya RB67 Pro-S on Ektar-100 with 90mm and 180mm -C lenses. Scanned myself on an Epson V600, white balance and exposure tweaks in Lightroom 4. In no particular order, so there is some jumble as to shot earlier vs later. Tips? Criticisms? Thoughts?

I'm really wanting the 50mm or 65mm for this camera as I suspect I'll get both some incredible landscapes and fun wide-angle portrait shots.

Question about Refurbished Lens from Canon Direct

I just got my refurbished 70-200 IS II today which I ordered from Canon Direct. Upon close inspection I noticed there is a small scratch/blemish on the front element. A very minor paint chip near the tripod collar. Everything else seems fine. No noticeable dust inside, and works fine. Also I was under the impression that Canon ships their refurbished lenses in a 'refurbished' box. In my case they shipped my lens inside the soft case that came with the 70-200 IS II. Anyone else experienced similar case?

Also, I was wondering if I should return the lens. The minor scratch on the front element is bugging me, even though that mark shouldn't affect the images.

What do you NOT like about the Canon 6D?

Having gone back and forth between options, I am thinking a 6D is my most practical choice. ($$$). Of course, I would rather have a 5D Mk III. But that being said, what do you 6D owners find you don't like about the 6D? I really want a full frame and an upgrade to better low light...... Focus points.... well, I guess I can be OK with the few that I would get..... But day to day, in hand, what don't you like about the camera? And what do you like better than your previous camera? Is the joystick too far away for easy point selections? Etc..Currently shooting a 20D and a 40D. Want to put my 17-40 and my 100 to work for me on a full frame body.

Is the unmodified Canon 5D3 any good for infrared photography with R72 filter ?

Hi !

I like playing around with B&W infrared photos using a Hoya R72 (or similar) infrared screw on filter and long exposures.

Since some cameras are better than others at shooting infrared without hardware modification, I wonder how does the Canon 5D3 fare ?

My original 5D Classic Mark I was ok (ish) ... Exposure times of approx 4 mins f11 at 100 iso in sunlight with R72.

The Canon 5D Mark II seemed to have a stronger internal IR filter making exposure times even longer and was less practical without hardware modification.

Is the 5D Mark III likely to have an even stronger internal IR filter that makes infrared photography almost impossible without hardware modification and removal of the standard factory fitted internal IR filter ?

Does anyone have experience with using UNMODIFIED Canon 5D3 and filters for infrared photography ?

Thanks in advance ...

Advice on a new body

Hi

Going to try to keep it short and simple.

I currently have a T2i which I use with a 70-300 (non L) lens to shoot birds and a 100 macro (non L) to shot bugs. I've got a 400 5.6 on the way for birds and other wildlife in general and am in the market for a 15-85 as a new "walk around lens".

I feel like I need a new body, particularly for the rear dial - I'm shooting macro in full manual and need to be able to change my aperture and shutter speed more easily (the T2i only has one dial).

For both birds and bugs I find myself always wanting to bump up my ISO to allow me to take shots at faster shutter speeds but, well, "noise".

I'm debating at the moment between a 7d, a 60d or the theoretical 70d.

Now I know people always say "don't wait for something that doesn't exists...", but, I live in Africa at the moment so I probably won't be buying until after the 70d arrives. Even if it's just a fancy 60d with a new autofocus, is that going to be better for me than a 7d?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Also, I shoot video VERY rarely. My camera is for taking pictures. I have yet to think to myself "oh, man I wish I had a flip-screen".

Thanks,

d

From NL: Big Product launch invitations

From NL, what might this include? Hope it hasn't been posted here yet.
"We're told (thanks) that Canon have been summoning inviting some people from dealers for a 'big' product launch within the 6-8 week timeframe. If so, expect to see some more serious leaks within the next couple of weeks. No details of just what was meant by 'big', since in PR speak that could be anything!"
