60D over exposed in sunlight - how do I control?

I have a Canon 60D + 50mm F1.8 lens

It's on shutter speed of 50, FPS of 24 and aperture of 1.8 (what I want) - I have on manual exposure
I tested yesterday. All fine

I shoot today. Damn!!
Over exposed!!
There wasn't a control for the exposure - or at least I couldn't find it

I put on auto exposure - all fine now and beautiful video
BUT I wanted the blurred background look
The aperture was pushed up to a higher value and no longer changeable

What am I doing wrong?
(This was actually my first attempt to do video outside!!)

Thanks

5D mark III Live view NOISE!!!

My name is Emanuele Del Bufalo

About 3 weeks ago, I bought a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, A couple of days ago I had the chance to try it at night, for a session of astrophotography.

I experienced an issue on the LCD screen.
By activating the Live View for manual focussing, the screen instead of being sharp is completely full of noise, zooming x5 or x10 degraded by the noise.
The strange thing that made me worry is that this problem is always present regardless of the ISO set.
In the first few shots I had a high ISO value and the problem was present, also decreasing the ISO in low to medium levels from 800 to 100 noise and distortion on the screen are always present.
I would point out that the problem is not visible in the final result, the picture is sharp and the file is splendid, the excellent performance I expected from a device such as the 5D Mark III.
By changing the various settings of the live view and ISO, I noticed that if you disable the extension ISO H1-H2 and L decreases the noise on the LCD screen.

I did several tests using the camera body that I used in prior an EOS 500D and the LCD screen not absolutely similar problems. Mounting the same lens setting both cameras in M Av or Tv p with the same settings LIve View the 500D is much more 'sharp and the noise is obviously visible in H1 but does not disturb the focus of the scene tp much.

and even more 'important, if the live view at high ISO is quite noisy in the canon 500D I expect a much better situation in a Canon 5D Mark III or at least similar, definitely not worse.

I've spent the last 24 hours doing online research on this problem, without much success, I do not find anything about this problem.

A friend of mine has the same camera and noticed the same problem.

Please consider this mail that I send you, I'm trying to solve this my problem, I bought all my new equipment to become a professional photographer and I can not afford to have purchased a camera body that is not perfect as I expected.

I am attaching some photos of the live view of my 5D Mark III where the problem is visible at different zoom and various ISO.

I look forward to your response, please do not underestimate the problem

Sincerely

Emanuele

What Portrait Lens Should I Get Next? 24-70L/70-200L/85L?

I know there are some significant differences between the 24-70L/70-200L/85L, but price isn't one of them. I'm hoping to gain a little insight from those who have a broader arsenal than I do. The subjects are infant to small groups, like a family of four or five. I don't often shoot super wide or from far away but I don't know if I want to limit myself to 85mm with a lens this expensive, although I'm very comfortable with moving around to frame.

I currently shoot primarily with a 50mm 1.4 and love the image quality, sharpness, and DOF options when shooting. I used to never go below f2.8 but I came away with some great shots last weekend at f2 and they've got me thinking twice about utilizing the shallower DOF. I shoot with a 5D3 and don't care much for IS. The only other lens I have is the "good at everything but great at nothing" 24-105. Although to it's credit, I like the images it captures on the wider end.

Anyways, opinions welcomed. Thank you for your time!

Canon service center

So, a little story...

I live/work in Japan, but am an American citizen only. I have a job that grants me SOFA status, which basically means though I am a civilian, I work on a military base here and am granted the same privileges as an Active Duty military member.

That status granted me the ability to purchase a brand new 5D3 last summer at the base exchange, as opposed to having to buy one out on the town for a much higher price (sidenote, most Japanese electronics are cheaper in the states than Japan).

I flew to America a few weeks ago, and on my return flight, I decided to check my camera bag as opposed to carrying, so I would have a lighter load at the three airports I must always traverse. Mistake. When I arrived home, and began unpacking everything, I noticed that the multidirectional button/pad seal was torn.. no biggie... Except then when I tried using the button, it was stuck to one side, would not operate, etc...

I tried messing with it, tried getting it to work, and actually ended up breaking it off. Now my 5D3 is pretty much useless to me without that function. I emailed Canon, explained the situation of the camera, my situation, they said send it in, so I did.

Got the email today that the camera is being fixed under warranty, no charge. I didn't know their warranty covered things (airline transport) that most companies would just laugh at. I was expecting a couple hundred dollar repair, instead it cost me the 45 dollars or so to USPS priority mail the camera to their California service center.

In short, Canon just earned my continued business, despite me being a long time canon fan (Canon G2-PS800-PS1000-SX10-Rebel T1i-5D2-and now onto my 5D3, S95, and EOS-M. I don't really use the S95 anymore with the M in the stable)

Just wanted to share. Comment if you feel like

Tutorials/Videos/Books/PDFs for Canon 5D Mark III

Hi all,

I have been swamped with work and look forward to taking my 5d MK3 out this weekend for some video/photo fun and learning experiences. There are a few things I need to get (Variable ND and CF card currently using a 16gb Sandisk SD leftover from 60D).

I see that Dave Dugdale is in the mix of creating/mixing an instructional video for the 5d MK 3 primarily for video. I also saw that f-Stop academy has one and if you google a few more options come up.

I wanted to get some general and specific feedback.

I'd like to obviously get more proficient at both video and photography and while many will be inclined to say read forums and practice I can't help but think that well produced video tutorials and books/pdfs are already available to speed up the learning curve. (this includes: capturing AND editing video/photo)

Thanks in advance!

focusing screen dilemma resolved

I have two manual focus lens, two auto focus lens and a 6d. I could see in Photoshop focus was often soft or off on a number of photos. Tried a Ec-A (micro prism) and a Ec-B (split image) focusing screen but had two issues: 1) I could not align the small center circle with the center focusing aid and 2) The center focusing aid went dark on smaller apertures especially if it was a low light situation. Solution? I installed the Eg-S. No center focusing aid to align or go dark. I had the more precise focusing I needed without the issues. I do use auto focus in low light with a f5.6 lens. The Eg-S is also not as clear as the Eg-A standard precision screen Canon supplies. Eg-S is designed for f2.8 or larger apertures. I'm using it successfully on f1.8, f2, f4 and f5.6 lens.

The Eg-S is available from Amazon and and other Canon retailers for less than $35. Can be installed on 6D, 5D Mark II and 5D Mark III for sure. May work on other EOS cameras as well. Works for me. I can see far better what is in focus in the viewfinder.

Does This 6D Upgrade Make Sense?

Only a matter of time before I trade my T1i in for a 6D. Most of my photography is indoor volleyball for which I use the Canon 100 2.0 and 200 2.8II lenses with results that would even stun the editors of Sports Illustrated.
Does it make sense to stick with the 100 and 200 for indoor sports (and the 100 2.0 for portraits), add a Canon 35 1.4 (I just really like primes) for most non-sports things and a 100-400 for outdoor sports, events, etc.?
So the proposed line-up would be:
6D
35 1.5
100 2.0
200 2.8
100-400
Thanks.

remote shooting

can anyone advice me on the capabilities of the rc-6 ir remote control. i want to set up my camera around the garden and take shots of birds, foxes , put it up trees etc ( i havnt got any super long lenses) so itll be like a camera trap but ill be controlling when it fires.

i have a 6d but sadly i have a windows phone (no canon app) and i dont own a laptop (my desktop pc is not close to the garden and not possible to move), so the wifi/tethered options are a no go.

my options are , buy android phone/get alaptop (expensive ) or another remote

is the rc-6 anygood for a budget option, is it something that i could work around its limitations, or is there another relatively cheap option i could go for. considering my gardens not huge but might want to work at 20 meteres

200-400 f4 and the "new" 100-400 zoom

I have a couple of questions...

1. How much do you think the 200-400 actually costs to manufacture? It seems to me that even allowing for a hefty markup and amortizing development costs across the number of lenses they are likely to sell (at +10k a pop) the retail price is out of line with costs. I'm not asking if this is what the market can bear and all that, just trying to get a feel for cost vs. price.

I don't know, maybe their manufacuring costs were doubled by the tsunami (building the factory twice...)

2. How much of the lens (hardware such as the glass, electronics, or manufacturing equipment needed to produce the lens) would be transferable to the "new" 100-400? And is this where they are going? A metaphor might be commercial aviation, the 200-400 is business class and the 100-400 is coach. One pays the overhead and they other marginal costs.

Can a (DSLR) flash cause permanent eye damage?

Hi,

out of curiosity and since i just remembered as a kid i accidently fired off my compact camera flash directly in front of my eyes ( ::) ) im wondering if permanent eye damage is possible with my inbuilt 1100D camera flash for example. Some external flashes are able to burn plastic bags as can be seen on youtube. Oh and the compact camera flash just gave me purple vision for some time but nothing permanent.

Just wanna see some calculations of the mathematics/physics experts here (i suck at this) like

1.) Whats the minimum flash power needed to cause retinal burn or other permanent damage

2.) If its even possible to happen in real cuz light travels different inside the eyeball onto the retina than in the air i guess etc.

im just curious so please satisfy my scientific needs :)

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Raw Video-Processed in Lightroom 5 Beta

Just a bunch of test footage that I shot to try out Magic Lantern's 5D Mark III Raw Output hack. Only was able to shoot a few seconds of video at a time before having frame drops because I don't own a fast enough CF card currently. All RAW files processed in Adobe Lightroom 5 Beta, video footage put together in Sony Vegas Pro 10.

Lenses used: Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM, Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM.

1D X White Balance Bug NOW WITH SAMPLES...

I have a problem with white balance shifting on random images on my 1D X.
White balance is set to Flash, Manual Exposure and Aperture and ISO. NOTHING AUTOMATIC except for AF.
Out of 307 photos I took yesterday, about 8 or 9 have a "colder" white balance. Basically they look less "warm".
I shoot models so I can tell right away because of the skin tones and the over all scene changing.
At first I thought it was a color problem with my Einstein Flashes not keeping up while shooting rapidly (The camera is on Low Speed at 3fps anyway and at about 10% of power, so recycling shouldn't be a problem) but I notice this also happens when using available light.
This happens every day on random images and I am concerned at the moment thinking I might have a faulty sensor or light meter...
I have the latest firmware and use a Canon 24-70 F2.8L II...
Anyone has the same issue? Please let me know.
I am a CPS Gold Member and could send the camera to Canon for a checkup...
Cheers

Patrick

<p><strong>From LensRentals.com

</strong>Roger over at <a href="http://www.lensrentals.com" target="_blank">LensRentals.com</a> has taken some time to test a variety of Canon 400mm lenses, including the new EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x.</p>
<p><strong>Roger’s initial take…</strong>

<em>“I can’t say whether it’s worth the price or not, but I can certainly say it’s the sharpest zoom lens I’ve ever seen, with image quality rivaling the most expensive primes.”</em></p>
<p>He did note however, that the 200-400 is a bit shorter at the long end than the EF 400 f/2.8L IS II. They’ve come to the initial conclusion that it’s about 95% of the 400 2.8 primes focal length.</p>

5D Mk III Vs. 7D Vs. T4i VIDEO ONLY

So I recently had to give up my 5D Mk III due to my car breaking down and needing to be fixed (Damn BMWs are so expensive ;_;). Anyhow, it's summer and I'd really like to take advantage of the time to make more videos, my main focus.
Speaking of video purposes only, should I invest in a T4i for the time being and just upgrade down the road or just save straight for a MkIII if it means losing summer's opportunity to shoot?
I've had the 7D and Mk III before, never the T4i, and I understand the big differences are Noise, build quality, and stuff when comparing the T4i to the two, but if it's only video, and in controlled environments, will I be okay just using a T4i?
For sure, I'm going to need a camera that does full HD and has 60 FPS. I mainly shoot outdoors and the latest is sunset when I shoot (I usually hit 1600 ISO when I do that.)

5D Mark III phenomenon

My newly acquired 5D Mark III does something that I find really odd.

When I have occasion to remove the CF card for any reason and re-insert it, the camera switches to the SD card. It does this even when the camera has been turned off. My 1D Mark IV will do this, but only if the camera is left on when the CF card is removed, and never when turned off. This can be really a pain in the butt if I'm not paying attention or forget to check before I start shooting again.

Both cards are set in the camera to 'Standard' mode, not to switch or record to both.

I've looked through the manual but can find no mention of this. Am I missing a setting somewhere? This is really annoying.

$1550 for a used 85L f1.2 II

I saw a post on CL - 85L f1.2 II selling for $1775.

Condition according to seller:
1. Like new in term of funtionality and cosmetic. ( I did saw the pictures from seller, the lens looks new)
2. No dust, B&W filter is included
3. Date code UA(2012)
4. Comes with everything box, foams, etc....original receipt from best buy. Warranty is just expired
5. Reason for selling: seller wants 50L. 85L is little to tight.

I spoke to seller over the phone and we agreed @ $1550 cash.

Question: Would you go for it if all conditions above are true?

Need help with basic settings for 60D

I've been testing my 60D on manual mode
I don't seem to be able to get a good picture
The picture is always dark - I'm just testing from my bedroom - I'm using the standard 18 - 55mm lens

I've tried increasing the ISO to max (even though I read somewhere that you should go beyond 1600 - is that correct?). I've increased and decreased the aperture to both ends of the spectrum. I've changed the shutter speed from 1/50 to as fast as it will go. I've tried changing the AWB to be auto and also tungsten light

I've also tried to change the exposure setting. When I turn the wheel, I get 2 vertical lines both going in opposite directions

I've tried in Av mode just to test. Same again

The thing is, I also have a Canon 1100D. When I took pics with that, they came out fine. The light of the picture was spot on. BUT... the lens I used was a 50mm F1.8 - where I made the aperture 1.8 or 2.0

If I use auto, the flash pops up and takes a pic - but the colour just isn't right

Where am I going wrong??

Thanks in advance
