How to measure and set white balance on 60D

I'm confused how to get the correct white balance for my 60D

I saw one guy who put a white card in front
Then he measured the kelvin value
And then he said you had to manually input this
It all seemed good and made sense - but then afterwards I couldn't find the same video again!!

ALSO... can someone give me a line or 2 about why getting the right white balance is important and what it does for you?
The problem with the internet is that there's too much to read - not sure where to start!

Thanks

Do I need a light meter? Can I use Android or iPhone??

I've been looking at 3 point lighting videos

All the experts use a light meter
If I want to be in full control, should I also invest in one?

I've seen them for about £30. Are there one or 2 models that are industry standard?

AND... how about Android or iPhone? I've seen a few apps for light meter
Are these a waste of time? Android I would be happy to dismiss
But iPhone... that always surprises me

Thanks

70-300L IS + Kenko 1.4 PRO300 DGX

Hi. I read so many different views on the combination. Everything from low light to not "locking on" at 300mm. Does anyone use this setup and does it work? If not then you are saving me 250 Euro so thanks in advance :-)
I need this work on a regular basis and not depending on certain factors.

On the Kenko site it specifies "With the PRO 300 1.4x, DGX full AF operation is possible with camera lenses having a maximum aperture of F4 or brighter. The same light and contrast requirements apply." Does this mean that from over 200mm you have to use manual focus?
On the compatibility list it states that the lens is supported and does not mention the aperture. I wonder also if it is slow on focusing on moving objects.

Underwater Macro Video - Canon 5d Mark II

Hello all:

I wanted to share an underwater macro video I made. You can see it here:

https://vimeo.com/66974789

This is the 5 minute version. I also have a 3 minute version that won first place in the SEA International Video Competition. It was filmed strictly with a Canon 5d Mark II, and a 100mm USM Macro lens. I also used a Subsee +10 underwater wet diopter. Some of the things in the video are incredibly small. The seahorse you will see, is about the size of a grain of rice.

Curious to see what your impressions and thoughts are. So please feel free to share any comments.

Thanks,
Dustin

Magic Lantern is onto something…

There have been a lot of posts lately about Magic Lantern’s breakthrough enabling RAW video recording on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III.

Below is an ISO test of the standard H.264 of the 5D3, and what the RAW video from Magic Lantern looks like. This was done by Dustin J Tolman.

The results are pretty remarkable and easy to see, this software is still in its early stages and will probably get a lot better over the next few months.

Workflow

An ISO test comparing Canons H264 compression vs Magic Lantern’s 14 Bit RAW hack.

• First I converted the RAW files with ML’s raw2dng.

• Next I dragged the files into Photoshop which opened up Adobe Camera Raw.

• I selected the first image and used the auto white balance setting which got rid of the heavy magenta tone.

• Then I synchronized the additional files, and exported them as 16bit tiff files.

• First I tried to use QuickTime 7 to create an image sequence, but it render the video with incorrect color.

• So instead of QT I ended up using Final Cut Pro X to create an image sequence to a ProRes 422 HQ output.

Canon Milestone - 90 Million EF Lenses Manufactured

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 29, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced its parent company, Canon Inc., has reached a new lens-manufacturing milestone with the production of its 90-millionth EF-series interchangeable lens for EOS cameras. Canon turned out its 90-millionth lens, an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (released in September 2012), on May 23, 2013.

The production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) single-lens reflex film cameras began in 1987 at the Company’s Utsunomiya Plant. Since that time, supported by a wide range of users, demand has steadily increased and production has expanded. Today, Canon produces EF lenses at four of the Company’s manufacturing bases, including Canon Inc., Taiwan; Canon Opto (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.; and Oita Canon Inc. in southern Japan.

EF lens production surpassed the 10-million-unit mark in 1995, doubled to 20 million lenses in 2001, and went on to reach 30 million units in 2006 and 40 million units in 2008. Afterward, due to the rapid spread of EOS digital SLR cameras, production of EF lenses gained further momentum, crossing the 50-million-unit threshold in 2009, reaching 60 million units in January 2011, and hitting the 70-million-unit mark in October of the same year. In August 2012, lens production reached 80 million units and now, a little over nine months later, the company commemorates its latest manufacturing milestone of 90 million lenses.

Canon’s proprietary EF lenses, launched in March 1987 along with the EOS SLR camera system, have continued to evolve since their introduction, leading the industry through the incorporation of a wide range of innovative technologies, including the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, a multi-layered diffractive optical (DO) element, and Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) anti-reflection technology.

With the introduction in May this year of the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x, super-telephoto zoom lens with a built-in 1.4x extender that makes possible a 200-560 mm focal length range, along with EF Cinema Lenses for digital cinematography, Canon’s extensive EF lens-series lineup now comprises a total of 84 models.

Canon will continue refining its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technologies, striving to produce exceptional and reliable lenses and cameras that cater to the varying needs of photographers-from first-time users to advanced amateurs and professionals-while contributing to expanding the photographic and video imaging culture.

Wireless remote operation for 5D3 + Ipad 4

Does anyone have experience with CamRanger + 5D3 that allows you to shoot wirelessly through an Ipad? Having Live View on the Ipad and being able to adjust the exposure, etc, remotely is my goal. The only vendor I've found is CamRanger which is approximately $300. Any alternatives to this?

The Canon 6D has wifi and works great with Canon's EOS app on the Ipad and I miss this same function for the 5D3. Smart Trigger app does not work with LV nor Ipad 4.

Any help you can provide would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

7D frozen when turned on

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this before:

Last night my 7D froze on me and after some quick google searches, I found that the camera sometimes freezes after the firmware has been updated and the quickest remedy is to remove the battery and then replace it. I removed the battery and this fixed the problem but I have not updated the firmware in quite some time; in fact, it is still on firmware 1.xx.

The camera would turn on and off, the sensor cleaning would perform but the camera would not take any pictures. At first, the lens did not autofocus and after checking the lens, and putting a different one on there, the camera was still not working. I then tried to change the aperture and this did not work along with the shutter speed (I could change the iso setting). I tried changing to aperture priority and still no luck. When I changed back to manual, the set aperture changed from 4.5 to 15. After some more attempts at shooting, I noticed the aperture and shutter speed would change automatically, almost as if it were in full auto. The camera gave no error codes. I then did a reset of all of the cameras settings which still did not fix the problem. As stated earlier, once I removed the battery, it worked fine. I have had this camera for 3 years and have done two seasons of weddings with the camera (approximately 75,000 shots) and have had no issues like this. My wife, the photographer that makes money at weddings in the family, has a wedding this weekend and she about had a meltdown while we were trying to figure this out.

I am just curious if anyone else has had a similar experience with this...

Genus 77mm ND Fader Circular Filter: Adequate for a serious amateur?

Greetings, Canon specialists.

Being in the market for an ND filter to mount atop my 70-200 2.8 L Mk II, I dropped into the local mortar and bricks outlet, Henry’s , and asked them for the Teffen filter. The rep came back with a Genus GL GNDF 77mm and said, ‘This is better’. Since I have acted on this bloke's advice before, I paid what he wanted, around CAD220, and came home. I then went to B&H, Adorama sites and they came back with ‘Discontinued”. Only another retailer, in Australia, I think, was selling them. The reviews seemed to be good and I am sure for what for I have in mind, just a few shots of buildings and bridges minus people, it will give me good results.

Has any one in CR-land experience with this filter? I just want to be reassured before mounting it on the lens, even though Henry’s are good about returns/exchanges. Did I buy a collector’s item since it is now discontinued, a reasonable ND filter or a lemon is my question.

Advice needed: performance of 6D

Sorry, guys!
But I need some advice: For the high school graduation of one of my sons, I am looking for an Camera. He likes to photograph birds and planes, and now landscape at climbing.
Which Camera? I do not want to spend 3000€ for a 5D3. Would be the cheaper 6D an alternative? How is the performance of this Camera in the field for shooting fast objects? How fast is the Cam saving the images? I know that the image quality is very good.

Or should I buy an 700D first and wait for the 70D or 7D2? How fast is the 700D at RAW continuous shooting saving the images on the card? Faster then my 60D?

(I owned an 7D, but when I photographed with it, I did not use the continuous shooting mode. After it crashed, I use an 60D. But my son tells me, that the 60D takes a lot of time to save the images when the buffer is full. Sometimes he is not able to shoot another RAW series of 10 images for 3-4 minutes.)

Alterntive to tripod mount ring

Hi,

I own the EF 70-200 2.8 L IS II, which has a tripod mount ring. I rarely use a tripod, so generally I find the tripod mount ring is in the way. I therefore generally shoot without the tripod mount ring. My "problem" is that when the tripod mount ring is not on the lens, there are screws etc sticking out of the lens, and quite simply it does not look good. My question is therefore:

Do you know of any product I can mount on the lens that will hide the "ugly" parts where the tripod mount ring should have been? I'm thinking someting in the line of the tripod mount ring, but without the tripod foot, making it a simple "cover up" ring.

Thanks. :)

Tronix Explorer XTSE - any experiences

After a bit of thought I ended up with a pair of Elinchrom BXri 500 (instead of the older Bowens 500 and 250ws that I posted about a couple of weeks ago). I am starting to inform myself about possibilities of on-location opportunities, thus battery packs. I have found one that looks promising - Tronix Explorer XTSE. It is relatively inexpensive and seems on spec like a good option for me (it says it can shoot the two strobes at full power for about 500-550 pictures if you do not use the modelling light, and that will be good enough for my use).

Has anyone used them and can you share your experiences?

5D Mk III Focusing Issue

I have been using my 5D Mk III for a few weeks now. Overall I am very pleased with the photos. One quirk I have not figured out is that the camera often will not focus as I switch between focusing limits. To get it to focus I have to do a quick manual focus (just turn the focus ring while still in AF) and now focus will occur with no problems. This happens with both my 300 f/2.8 and 500/f 4 lens with the 1.4 extender attached. I have not tried this without the extender attached. Did I do something to mess up some setting in the AF in the camera? I am using center spot focus.

Thanks for any assistance,

Tom

Center and Spot Focusing

Hi. I mainly do aircraft and auto-racing photography and many people advise to use only the center point for focusing. This always confuses me.

What do you mainly use ? I now use an XSi 450D and this weekend I will probably purchase a 60D. Now the 60D has 9 cross-type focus points and as you know the 450D only has one which is the center. The 7D has 19.

Now if most people use only the center or spot focusing then why spend so much more money on a camera with more focus points? I do find myself that if I use all 9 focus points then on too many occasions some of the subject is out of focus.

Do the focus zones on the 7D help that much or do you still find yourself using center or spot focusing only? The 7D is another 400 Euro for me and I am not sure it is worth the extra bucks.

As usual thanks for your advice and comments in advance.

My Rokinon 85 1.4 and tamron 17-50 for my 60d won't work. Any suggestions for video? Prime vs Zoom? Tamron 24-70 looks like a good deal?

also can I get good audio with rode ntg2 directly into camera? Or should I keep it going into my h4n?

any good mono pods ? Is manfrotto the on,y viable option?

24-70 2.8f II or 70-200 2.8f II

First timer on the Forum looking to get some opinions on these two lenses

Ok so i'm planning on getting the 5d mark III here pretty soon and I wanted to get some opinions on what lens I should get with it first, the 24-70 2.8f II or the 70-200 2.8f II? I plan on having both of them at some point in time but for now I just want one or the other.

p.s. Some of my main subject matter is going to be events i.e. weddings, birthday parties and an occasional sporting event.
