When are they coming?

I have confirmed that the new EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x will indeed hit some retailers before the end of May, and for the others the first week of June. Canon Canada expects and is telling retailers that they will have limited stock on May 27, 2013 in their warehouse. Retailers will have theirs a few days later.

There will not be a lot of lenses available on the initial run, most reps are saying only “preordered” quantities will be available until at least the middle of July.

If you have your preorder in, it looks like you should expect your new lens quite soon.

What is the next Canon lens you want or covet and why...

Being relatively new to the Canon DSLR world, I have been reading up on various lenses. Many lenses that are just fantastic to have but cost a pretty penny or three. I am in the process of (FINALLY) getting a Canon 70-200 IS II and will be here in three weeks. Just need another $300 and it's in my hands. So, this dream lens will finally come to fruition and I cant wait to use it for sports.

But a new lens that I want has emerged and it's going to take much longer to save for but will be worth it. The Canon 200 f/2 lens. The wrestling matches I attend for my nephews and high school are usually in gyms with some craptastic lighting and when they are at an awards ceremony, the auditorium lights are even worse.

The reviews for the f/2 200mm have been superb. I wish I had this lens for my nephew's graduation at the end of this month but maybe next time for when the other nephews graduate.

So, that's my dream lens. The Canon 200mm f/2. A 400mm 2.8 is also on the list. What about y'all? Which lens would you like to obtain and why?

Just curious and I like reading about the varying subjects that people use for their photography. I use mine primarily for sports.

Pinhole Photography

I put this under lenses talk (proper, i don't know...?).

I would love for this thread to be a place where people can share their tips, experiences and questions about pinhole photography.

I have a few questions: I have seen several wesites that sell pre-drilled Canon caps for pinhole photography.

-Has anyone used them, and is it safe to use (I wonder if it is asking for trouble with dust on the sensor..)? If you have, what settings did you use to get the best results.

Feel free to post pictures you have taken with the pinhole technique.

Kind regards,

Gerhard.

Seriously thinking of selling my 5D Mk2 now that I can get a Mk3 for around £1800.

The 1DX just isn't realistic for me given the price and the Mk3 has advantages for what i shoot. The question isn't whether I want one regarding its features. I think it would be a great upgrade now.

Anyhoo, I'm seeing issues regarding reliability popping up on this and other forums regarding issues with it.

I'm concerned that I'll be going from the 5D Mk2, which is pretty much bullet-proof at this point due to how long they've been making them, to something that might let me down due to teething problems which seem to persist over a year since it was released.

Your thoughts, please?

Photographing martial arts

Cheers!

I'm going to take some promotional pictures for a taekwondo -club and would appreciate any help I can get.

Obviously it's going to be photos about people doing high kicks and fighting etc. It's pretty fast stuff, so I figured that it's better to be shooting in Tv mode with shutterspeed set up to 1/500 for starters. We'll see how fast it really needs to be. I'm going to shoot in continuous mode. When shooting with flash, I'll have the second curtain sync on. But that's about all I can think of by myself.

What I want to do is...
1) get some sharp photos with (maybe) some motion blur on feet when the models are kicking/fighting
2) maybe some silhouettes with a flash lighting the background (with or without a colored gel)

I'm not going to have a studio. We're shooting some of the pictures outdoors in the summer and some are going to be shot indoors at the training place - which is clean and neat, but it's not particularly a beautiful place. Lighting is probably going to be a problem, there's fluorescent lights in the ceiling and there are many large windows, so there's going to be light of two kind.

My gear: 5DmkIII, 35L, 24-105L, 100L, 100-400L, 580EX II flash with Honl gels (CTO's, plusgreen, CTB, bright red, etc.) and Canon ETTL cable (about one meter long when stretched out), circular polarizer filter + some Cokin graduated and not graduated ND filters

There's also an option to borrow 600EX and 430EX II. It's not an option to invest in new lenses, flashes or lights. Or 1Dx :'(

So... What to do? Or try to do?
Am I totally lost?

Ok, I just snagged a 600EX-Rt, now what? (Questions on use, and going forward).

Hi all,

Thanks to the forum here, I snagged a refurb 600EX-RT from Canon. (I'm still trying to figure out why they charged me freakin' sales tax on an online store, I've not heard of a Louisiana Canon B&M store here, but I digress).

So, first thing, I'm reading through the strobist site and doing research. First think I'm painfully aware of, that except for some instances of bouncing light off the ceiling, and having the little card catch some light off that for face fills on that type shooting, you're never really wanting to use the flash on camera.

So, question one:
Does this flash come with some type cable to hook to the hotshoe to the flash, to allow you to shoot with camera in one hand, flash in the other?

Question two:
Looking a the Canon ST-E3-RT. I found it on amazon.com for $299 shipped, that's not a bad price is it? If so, that starts me off well for this and future growth with flash off camers.

Questions three and more:
For quick multi-flash setups...starting out before I can buy the ST-E3-RT or another Canon RT speedlight...would I be able to get some cheaper flashes right now to use with this flash? For instance, I'm thinking of trying to learn manual shooting (based on a great CreativeLive class the other week), could I get something like the Yongnuo YN-560 Speedlights, and have them fire off (optically?) when they sense the main 600EX-RT go off?

I've seen refurbs for those in the $55 shipped range..and thought this might be a neat way to get3-4 more flashes to play with cheaply to use with my new purchase right off to bat, which again, would be cool for learning to shoot flash manual...and would hold me till I can save to get more RT controlled canon ones in the future.

Thoughts?

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Do you wish your 70-200L were black?

Today for the first time ever I saw a refurbished 70-200L IS II 2.8 in stock. Never saw that before. Usually it's out of stock almost immediately. It was very tempting! !! But I decided to hold on to my f4 version and a 135L. It's nice to combine them in one package but it's nice when I want to be stealthy with the 135.

The white color is too showy. I always feel that it attracts unnecessary attention.

Boy...it's still tempting

Disappointed with 50 f/1.2 sharpness @ f/1.2

Learned friends,
One week ago I bought the Canon 50 mm f/1.2 for my new 5D Mark III, specifically for the very shallow DOF at f/1.2.
I am however disappointed with the sharpness of the lens at f/1.2. At f/2.8 its excellent.
I enclose two 100 % crops showing some text at f/1.2 and at f/2.8. The two images were taken at an angle of about 30 degrees, thus making the test independent of AFMA settings - it is clear that there is a focus shift, but that is not what I am complaining about.
I trust that you will agree that the f/1.2 image is a lot fuzzier than the f/2.8 image. My question to you experts is whether such a difference in sharpness is to be expected or if I should return my glas? Your help is highly appreciated :)

My first portrait session and what I learned

One of my friends asked me to take her portrait for her new website (family counseling). She prefaced her email request with saying that “you take such wonderful dog pictures you think you could take one of me?” I didn’t say a thing, just wrote to her and said I would give it a try but warned her she would be my first subject and that there would be no charge. I did some reading on setting, things to be aware of, e.g., clothing, etc., and of course lighting, positions, and so on. I read some pretty interesting tips on the process and then post-processing. The lady was in her early sixties and had age lines, wrinkles, blemishes, and an assortment of other spots, and features that indicated a rich life. The shooting went fine, I found a nice completely shaded spot, a neutral wall about 10 feet in the background, and I had my 85mm, 135mm, and my 35 mm Sigma. I had her look to me over her shoulder and up as I was slightly above her and did my best to minimize any areas that I didn’t think were flattering.

I sent several thumbnails to her that I had processed and thought I had hit it on the head, pun intended. Her response was that they were too close and showed too much of her face. She then related to me that she hated her face. On receipt of this feedback I realized that I had assumed too much about what the client had wanted. Her idea about a portrait and mine were totally different. One of the “tips” I had found for doing portrait photography was to spend some one on one time with the client to get to know them and get a feel of what they wanted. Being a friend I obviously knew her but I didn’t really understand her expectations and it led to a failed session. I had assumed the client wanted a head shot in a serene setting for her website. I got that part nailed but it obviously wasn’t what she wanted. One of the things I took away was that there are many definitions about what a portrait is and guiding my client towards what that is should have been my first priority. I'm not posting the pictures because she didn't like them and I respect her privacy. The point of this post is to widen my understanding of what a client wants, how to direct them (and myself) to a mutual agreement prior to taking the shots, and other points that would result in a successful session.

Any comments appreciated.

50mm.. Upgrade or not?

Hi guys

Probably done this subject to death, although I am considering getting the 50 1.2 (currently have the 1.4).

I am a semi pro wedding photographer mainly as well as portraits and have two 5D3's, 24-70 II & 70-200 II with a 50 1.4 for low light and bokeh shots as and when needed.

I guess I am a bit of a snob and do love my L gear which is why I am considering the 50 1.2 as an upgrade. There appear to be loads of good and bad reviews and its not like I have money to waste although I can afford this lens but obviously dont wanna waste money.

I am not really interested in the 85 1.2 as I feel the 70-200 covers this range well enough, I can live with the 2.8 and love the IQ and use of this lens so much I wouldnt want to take it off in place of a prime hence the 50.

I did have the 35L last year which was nice but I tend to find its a bit wide for portraits/make up shots and you really do need to get up in people's faces.

So, who would recommend the 1.2 over my current 1.4 to complete my 24-70II & 70-200II combo?

Cheers

Sy

Evening at the zoo

First time here! Hi everybody :)

After fooling around and studying photography as a hobby for a couple of years I am feeling comfortable enough to start sharing images.

So this was an evening at the zoo. Thunderstorm was about to happen, so it was a little dark. I am amazed what 7D and LR can do with ISO up to 3200.
