The Digital Picture Reviews the Tamron 24-70

After difficulty in getting a lens that did not have problems, they finally got one from Tamron (Not Retail) that was good.

This is worrisome, if the only way they could get one that met specs was to get it from Tamron. My dealer told me to avoid it, apparently his customers had similar issues.

At any rate, here is the review. http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Tamron-24-70mm-f-2.8-Di-VC-USD-Lens-Review.aspx

Is anyone using ML after the latest 5D3 firmware update from Canon?

Hello all,

I'm getting ready to do the latest Canon firmware update to my 5D3.

I was also wanting to start testing out Magic Lantern on the camera, then it dawned on me, that that is a bit version dependent on the Canon firmware.

Just wanting to check to see if that was working yet and if anyone was using ML on the new Canon firmware upgrade.

Thanks in advance,

Buying a new camera - 650D, 700D or 60D, thoughts and suggestions?

I've had a 400D for the last 6 or 7 years and it's starting to feel a bit dated, so I'm looking to replace it.

I was thinking of getting the 60D, but it seems like the 700D and 650D are broadly similar, but with the DIGIC 5 and higher ISO.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has owned any of the above, what they think of them, will I see much difference in image quality between them and my 400D

Thanks everyone :)

Sensor Going? Purple Shots 5DMKII

Did not really see this covered except one small mention. But occasionally I will be shooting and have one image that comes out like it was shot through a purple or blue filter. It is almost like I am just seeing a single channel instead of RGB.

Is this a sign the sensor is going or other issues with the body? The CF Card going bad? Last time it happened was with the 24-105 and a SanDisk card

Lenses for climbing photography

Not sure if anyone on the forums has any experience to share for shooting climbing but here goes. I'm looking for a new telelens and is wondering if there is a better option than a Canon 70-200 2.8 and a 1.4x TC.

Photographing climbers is a bit tricky because of the perspective. Shoot from underneath and you only get shots of various bums and soles of feet while if you shoot from above you usually get tops of heads or people looking like they are straining while on the toilet. The only way to really shoot properly is being at the same height as or slightly above your subject which then means you can only rarely choose how far from your subject you will be. Because walking with a pack full of climbing gear is heavy enough and then adding a couple of heavy lenses makes my knees hurt just thinking about it, so it can't weigh too much either. Since I live in Britain weather is well, inclement at times. During the last six trips I've been to Wales I've been hailed on five of those trips so weather sealing is a plus. I'm by no means a professional and do it only as a hobby though I have managed to get several hundred pounds worth of gear as a result of the photos I've taken. It is far from what I shoot most but it is the bit where I'm finding my equipment lacking a bit.

I'm currently using a 40D, a 400D, a 24-105, a sigma 70-200 f2.8 and a 58mm f2 MF lens. The 400D will be replaced with a 5DII as soon as I find one which looks clean and doesn't cost too much. The 400D and sigma were bought for selling again as they were really cheap and below market value. The 40D will be replaced somewhere down the line with something a bit more weather resistant.

I've been trying to come up with the ideal lens combo for photographing climbers and it is a bit tricky. I know from previous experience that equivalent of 200mm on FF isn't enough reach a lot of the time. A reasonable aperture is very handy as backgrounds, especially indoors, are very distracting if not blurred out properly. It is also usually pretty dark indoors but movement isn't fast most of the time so 1/125 is often enough to get sharp pictures if stabilised. For indoors I may well be able to bring two bodies but for outdoors it'll be too much to carry with me and two lenses will max probably.

So far for me I'm leaning towards a used canon 70-200 f2.8 MKI (MKII is more than I can justify spending, especially as I'll need a TC as well) with a MKII 1.4x TC. The option of having a 2.8 aperture is very appealing for lots of other photography apart from just climbing so is a pretty big plus. Other lenses I have thought about would obviously be the 100-400L but I'm not sure about the rather small max aperture and not so modern IS and not to mention the reputation of being a dust sucker. Push pull I don't mind as I've used those before in the film days. Sigmas 120-300 f2.8 is a bit big and the new version too expensive anyway. The sigma 100-300 f4 would have been ideal FL and aperture if only it'd had some form of stabilisation. The 70-300L is no doubt a very good focal length and lens but again the aperture isn't very exciting. The new sigma 70-200 f2.8 OS and the sigma 120-400 aren't really more appealing than their canon counterparts unfortunately. The Canon 300 f4 IS has crossed my mind several times as they go quite cheap, I'm just worried about the lack of zoom given my limitations in choosing a position as 300mm may well be too long. Had it worked to bring two bodies it would be a solid option. Tripod and flash will rarely be with me as I won't be able to use them so don't count on those.

Anybody have any insights to share or should I just go for the 70-200 I with a TC and be happy? Once the 5DII has been bought I doubt I will opt for the 40D much so won't have the crop advantage. Buying a compact feels a bit like a step backwards and I do have one which I usually bring as it fits in a pocket. Pictures coming out of it are a bit of a let down though. I'd rather buy a (cheap) used lens and sell it on rather than renting as I'm spending too much on this hobby as it is. I'm happy enough with the 24-105 so I'll keep that for the foreseeable future

70-200 for video

My friend is really into video and wants to invest in a cheaper 70-200 for that purpose preferably before this summer. He'd be shooting in on a tripod so stabilization isn't an issue. He came to me for a suggestion between the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 (non OS) and the canon 70-200 f/4 (non IS). He's actually shooting a GH2 with an adapter, and since it's a smaller sensor and he wants the shallow DOF, I agree with him that a 2.8 would be preferable. I was actually thinking Tamron's older 70-200 f/2.8 (non VC) might be a good choice, since AF isn't an issue and it's optically better than the Sigma.

AFMA Accuracy vs. Precision

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to pose a question to those with sufficient experience AFMA testing and adjusting several lenses and bodies. Specifically, I want to discuss Accuracy (how 'spot-on' focus is relative to a target) and Precision (the repeat-ability of focus).

Ref: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Photography-Tips/AF-Microadjustment-Tips.aspx

I have found that more often than not, zero AFMA adjustment on a body for a given lens yields more precision (repeatable results) even if the depth of focus is "off" (front or back) rather than once you adjust the AFMA in either direction, even by +/- 1. This is why I am starting to believe factory calibration of body to lens is better than AFMA tweaks.

Sometimes, but less frequently, higher precision (repeat-ability) is found on an AFMA setting other than zero, but it isn't always the "best" AFMA offset in terms of image accuracy/sharpness.

I believe this is why the FoCal AFMA testing application has a AF Consistency test, which allows you to test various AFMA values in a repeatable fashion, to seek-out the best AFMA setting with the most repeatable results.

Have any of you found the same to be true? That sometimes you may want to trade accuracy for better precision (repeat-ability).

Thanks

Photos made with Rokinon 24mm Tilt-Shift Lens

Just received the Rokinon 24mm Tilt-Shift lens ... this is my first Tilt-Shift lens ever ... anyway here is a quick image made today morning during a minor dust storm ... will try shooting in better locations once the dust storm settles down.
The first image is made with Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC lens set at 24mm f/2.8 ... the second image is with the Rokinon 24mm Tilt-Shift lens set at f/3.5 ... the only edit done to both images is adding Matt Klaskowski's "HDR Look" Preset in Lightroom 5 beta.

Canon 24-70 2.8 ll or 20-60 2.8 mark 1 ?

I've been increasingly tempted to replace my 24-70 2.8 with the new mark ll model.
I was surprised and quite disappointed to discover how much wider the new lens is at both ends of the zoom !

I always wished the lens was a little longer, a 24 to 85 would be ideal. Discovering the new lens is now shorter at "70mm" makes me less eager to purchase it even with improvements to sharpness. I wonder what the acceptable tolerances are when naming a lens focal length ? Is it a 20-60 f 2.8 mark 1 ?

SL1 or Fuji X-EX1 or Sony Nex 6?? Would like your thoughts

I currently own a 60D with various EF lenses. I don't always want to lug that around and would like something lighter and smaller but still be able to get quality shots. While I know the SL1 can't be put in your pocket it can be thrown in a purse. All I would need is the body. My son has the Fuji which is fantastic but your talking 3x the price. Any thoughts? None of the stores around has the SL1 in yet so I can't really play with it.
Thanks !!!

40D vs. 6D AF

I'm currently living in South America, but will be returning to the U.S. in June and plan to upgrade my aging 40D. I've got a budget of $4000. Current lenses are 17-40mm f4L, 85mm f1.8, 70-300mm IS (non-L). I teach yearbook at a private K-12 school down here and do much of the photography myself (sports, events, mugshots, candids, etc). My 40D has started to show its limitations. ISO performance is by far my biggest reason for upgrade. Given my budget, these are the two options I've been looking at:

Option 1 - 5D Mark III Kit
- 5D Mark III Kit w/ 24-105mm f4L
- 50mm 1.4 or 50mm 1.8 (depending on kit price)
- Accessories (CF/SD cards, filters, etc)

Option 2 - 6D Kit
- 6D Kit w/ 24-105mm f4L
- 135mm f2L
- 50mm 1.4 or 50mm 1.8 (depending on kit price)
- Accessories (SD cards, filters, etc)

So, the 6D option also gets me an awesome lens. Lenses first, right? I use my 85 1.8 a TON, so I imagine the 135 f2L will see a lot of use. I love everything about the 5DIII and it would be a great all-around camera for me, but I'm starting to wonder if the 6D + 135mm might do more for my photography in the long-term.

So, I'll get to my question. I would certainly love to have 61-point AF, but if the 6D AF is equivalent to or better than the 40D AF, that'd probably be good enough for me. Has anyone upgraded from a 40D to a 6D who could share some thoughts? How are the outer points? The 40D has 9 cross-type, the 6D has only one. In actual practice, has that been noticeable?

Thanks so much!

EOS 1V and new EF L II lenses. Match made in heaven or ziltch?

Good day. Owing a 5D2 I have some nice opportunity to get a 1V for shooting B&W film whenever situation arises. I own a 24/1.4L II and 70-200/2.8L II which I understand are calibrated for digital cameras, for example subwavelength coating (SWC) on the former. Based on your experience are these lenses a performance improvement for a 1V or mismatch?

1100D bug or not?

Ive noticed a lot of times already when i half press the shutter, then change my iso and change my aperture via the wheel that it doesnt update on the back of the screen. I gotta half press the shutter again. I can look at the display and turn the wheel like mad but it will stay at 1.8 for example. Bug or not?
