Desired fantasy gear

Am wondering what gear we all want that is not being manufactured yet but we wish it were.

I start:
A focusing screen (for cameras that accept interchangeable screens eg 1dx and 5d2) with proper split screen focusing aid. This will help me use Zeiss lenses better and focus manually Canon lenses in low light etc.
And, if I could: 24-105 f2.8 IS with good corner sharpness. This will be my ultimate travel lens.

Thank you.

Recommendations for XTi replacement

Ladies and gentlemen, I have found lot of useful information on this forum and have resisted asking the same old basic question (my favorite topic is 70D rumors!) I am trying to provide the background and make this short but that is proving difficult.

I have used an XTi for 6+ years. It is still going but has some wear and is showing its age, has less usability and I leave it behind on short trips in situations I would have taken it in the past.

I shoot family/social/cultural events where I live for hobby. I shoot landscapes/cityscapes on travel. I have not printed more than a dozen photos in 6 years. XTi resolution has been sufficient so far. If I look at my past pictures, I like 35mm FF equivalent the most.

After doing much homework I came up with attached comparison (please see JPG attachment).

- Features highlithed in light green are important for my use.

- I tried 60D and 7D at local Costco. Their top display and buttons improve usability many times over my XTi.

- 6D scores most on the features important to me, but it is way too expensive. After 6D and 24-105 bundle, prime lenses will have to wait a while. When I do, I can get the most important prime lens, the 35mm. There is nothing comparable for 1.6x.

- I did not consider 7D because whatever it offers over 60D is not relevant to me.

- D60 will allow me to buy all three lenses I want, but I don't like to buy a camera that is overdue for replacement and use it for another ten years. I am OK spending $400 more if a 70D was announced today (moot but just shows my preference).

- If T5i improves usability, compensating for lack of buttons with touch-screen, that allows me to get the three prime lenses I want. I have not tried this hands-on. Actually, the 18-135 IS may meet 60% of my needs but I know the exact situations when I needed a prime. I will miss C1/C2 though (even one on my G12 is a big help).

- If buying a camera today, I think STM support is important though I don't shoot video (because my XTi doesn't have it). Same goes for articulated screen; I use it a lot on my G12. 6D doesn't have one but supports smartphone via Wi-Fi.

Please share your thoughts on any relevant factors I am missing. And if you have an opinion on which camera will serve better based on my evaluations, please share.

Thanks a lot.

Chromakey Green Screen Editing help

Hello I am pretty new to the 5D2 and I have been using its video mode more and more. I have a small green screen setup at home and I want to make some videos with it can anyone offer some help in a program thats pretty simple to use that can aide me with chromakey? I havent done much video editing other than windows movie maker so something cheap or free thats easy to use. Heck I will spend some extra bucks if its easy to use. Google hasnt been pointing me in the direction I want to go. Thank you!

Do you trust your camera?

When shooting scenes that I consider to be "keepers", with my 60d I am always taking multiple shots because I fear the af won't be spot on. The actual "real" af misses are maybe 5%, however more often the large af points miss slightly when trying to af on small points for example the eyes of a horse looking towards me.

Another issue is IS which only improves statistically so even with good IS systems like 100L and 70-300L I always take multiple shots because in my experience there are visible differences even with the same settings.

That's part of the reason why I'm now @120k shutter cycles, apart from running focus stacks and bracketing. Also sorting through very similar shots and deciding which is a little better than the other is annoying and time-consuming.

I'm wondering: Am I doing something wrong or different than other people? If you have a 60d or other cameras (what about 6d/5d3), do you trust your af and lenses so much that you take just one shot even of important scenes?

Since this will be a year for lenses, What lens do you desire the most to be released by canon? If your lens is not on here, Post and I will add.

Most should know my vote. ::)

Honey Bees

Saturday evening we became the guest of 32 hives of Honey Bees. They are out behind our house, (we have a lot of space behind us) and the air is thick with them. They quickly found our flowers and Crab Apple tree. They are peaceful, and just work like ... Bees ;)

I used my 5D MK III and 70-200 f/2.8L to capture a image. Its at f/6.3 and 1/500 sec to try and stop the action a little. We will get a small amount of the honey for the use of our land, and we will get everything well pollinated.

Where's the 1DX firmware?

Correct me if I am wrong, the AF-Assist "fix" was announced for the 1DX but not for the 5D3... so what did Canon do? Released the fix for the 5D3 and not the 1DX. Any word on the 1DX update? Arguably the 5D3 is more important to more people, but selfishly I am eagerly waiting as my wedding season ticks on. Anyone know what's happening? Bueller, Bueller...

Canon 40mm vs 50mm f/1.4

I've seen many comparisons of the shorty forty and the nifty fifty, but not much info bringing the 50mm f/1.4 into the mix. I know of the obvious difference in focal length and the 2-stop advantage of the 50mm. I've owned the 50mm for almost two years (my first prime), yet it never felt "right" even after I moved to FF with the 6D. I think going a bit wider may be the answer. So I'm asking for clarification on the following from all the more experienced minds around:

1) How do these lenses compare on sharpness f/2.8 through f/8?
2) Is there any improvement on AF speed/accuracy on the 40mm?
3) Any thoughts on FTM functionality and motor noise (I've never used an STM lens, yet I've found the 50mm's USM implementation lacking)?

dissapointed 6d 100mm f2 and 24mm 2.8 (non l)

i took my 6d on holiday with my 24mm 2.8 (non l) and my 100mm f2 (non l) and the shots looked pretty good on the back of my camera. but after getting the raw files into light room, i am extremley disapointed with them, i expected a lot better shots than my old 400d , this is quite an investment for me, and to see the results so unimpressive is such a let down.

am i just being picky, for 2k worth of gear should i expect better than this? ive never been as dissapointed with a set of pictures than i am with these, it was my first proper foray with my new camera and although im no expert and i have taken some pleasing shots before with my old camera and the 50mm 1.8!

is it the camera or me?

First photos with the EOS Kiss X7 (aka Rebel SL1 / 100D)

Hello,

I just bought the EOS Kiss X7 (Rebel SL1/100D) for my girlfriend, and today we took some photos with it for the first time. I have uploaded some samples here: https://picasaweb.google.com/112011848694712498567/TakingOutTheEOSX7ForTheFirstTime?authuser=0&feat=directlink.

Although I have an EOS 7D, I found the X7 to have extremely good ergonomics despite the much smaller size. The body is quite well made and just feels natural and comfortable. The touch screen interface is intuitive and everything makes sense if you have already used an EOS system. I must say I am really impressed with the capabilities of this little camera.

No 7D Mark II in 2013? [CR2]

Only one more body in 2013?

From a good source, we’re told that an EOS 7D Mark II will not be released in 2013. We could get an announcement sometime in this calendar year, but availability will be next year.

The only DSLR still to come in 2013 from Canon is the EOS 70D. The same source does say “several lenses will be coming in 2013″.

2014 will be the year for high-end DSLR cameras from Canon, consider this a down year for bodies.

Grain effect in LR

Yesterday I did a portrait shoot with a a model. Mostly to use for an upcoming exhibition I have in a few weeks, but also for her to get some photographs for herself. I have been experimenting back and forth with the grain effect in LR to find the right amount of grain to get that film look.

I shot with my 5D3 and the 35L, it gives a nice perspective that I like and it fitted her face perfectly although it's wide to be a traditional portrait lens. I will make prints around 50x60 cm, fitting the whole picture in and leave white frames around it for the magnets at the gallery.

I am wondering if you have any recommendations on how far to go on the scale. Any pointers? I am experimenting back and forth but just can't tell when it gets perfect. Any tips are welcome.

cheers
J

70-200mm f/4L IS USM for $629 at RitzCamera -mistake or fake?

Likeacoupon.com on facebook posted a link to the 70-200mm f/4L IS USM for $629 at RitzCamera. I thought at first perhaps the link was rigged so I googled RitzCamera and saw that, still, the f/4L IS is even cheaper than their 4L non is listed! I've been to RitzCamera brick and mortar stores but still this seems fishy.

Thoughts?
