Wedding expert suggestions desired...first time.

Hello folks - a local couple are going to be married and it was suggested that since they don't have enough money to hire a photographer I could shoot help them out. What I am asking for are some basic suggestions - maybe even a "how to shoot a wedding" for amateurs such as myself.

The gear I plan to use are my 7D along with my EF 24-70mm f/2.8L. I understand this lens is a great choice for guys shooting with 5Ds and such but with a crop sensor should I use this lens or my EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II?

The ceremony will be during the evening outdoors at the Norfolk Botanical Garden and the reception will be indoors. The bride has provided a nice list of the shots they would really like which is quite helpful.

Guys, I would really like to provide them with a good assortment of photos to choose from since this is such a special day for them. I am not charging anything of course but I would still like to do the best I possibly can. If you can provide basic suggestions such as:

  • Mode - Full, CA, P, Tv, Av, or M?
  • Flash or not? Fill indoors, outdoors, etc.
  • ISO on Auto from 100-800 or just set it on a particular value?

Just really a comprehensive review of the basics for a guy trying to do the best he can. I am a fast learner but truthfully normally enjoy taking time to set up a shot, use a tri-pod, experiment, etc. I am not a pro like many of you guys who make adjustments on the fly with full knowledge of what is required to create the desired shot.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and none are too basic. :)

Matching C100 to other Canon DSLRS

SO I just got a Canon C100. I have a wedding next weekend and I was wondering if anyone out there had a great recommendation for matching the picture profiles of the c100 and two 60ds. I am not interested in using c-log for the c100, but I am considering using WIDE DR for the c100 and cinestyle for the 60ds and adding back some contrast. I found the C.Weed Nutrl profile that matches up fairly well with the neutral of the 60d however I am not completely sold. Any thoughts on this subject? Thanks for your help!!

Best lens for capturing the Milky Way?

Over the summer I am going to move to Montana, this is great because it means I am only a couple miles away for beautiful locations with almost no light pollution. I have gotten pretty interested in star photography and I really want to capture the Milky Way. I shoot with a Canon 5D MKII and I have a 17-40mm f/4 and 50mm 1.8 that I use when I do photograph the night sky. I have been wondering what would be a good lens to use for capturing the Milky Way, my 50mm seems a bit to long and my 17-40mm seems to slow. I've been thinking about getting a Rokinon 14mm 2.8 because it is wider so I can use a longer shutter speed without getting star trails and faster so I can use a lower ISO. Having it be manual focus wouldn't seem to be that much of a problem if the infinity is well marked. I'm just looking for other peoples inputs on what they think would be a good alterative to my two lens or if one of the lenses I already have would be well suited for this.
Here are some shots I've gotten why in Hawaii and in Montana, unluckily, it was cloudy every night for 2-5 so I never got a chance to get any Milky Way shots.

Best Point & Shoot that will fit in a pocket?

Hello,

I'm looking for a great small camera.

I've been looking at:
Canon PowerShot S110
Panasonic DMC-LX7
Sony Cyber-shot RX100, which is a little steep on price.

I basically want a point and shoot to have with me every day. Something to shoot street, meetings, and whatever else that steps in my way. Which one would You choose? or any new recommendation?

Best,
Jin

Looking for some expert help with umbrellas and stands for speedlight 600

I just ordered 2 600ex-rt and the st-e3-RC, I want to get some portable light stands and umbrellas and/or light boxes and a backlight flash seems crazy to have to get another 600 for this, I have no idea what to get, I have a 5D3 and a 1Dx and am just starting to get into flash photography. I prefer not to buy twice, I would like it to be portable and durable and lightweight, any suggestions out there?

My kind of HDR

I took this in Maui while on Vacation. In print its just amazing. Was done in Photomatix about 5 years ago.
Granted... I have seen some great shots of this fence around the island and Internet but this one I feel is in the top 5. I havnt done an HDR Photograph in a while, just havnt had a scene jump out at me lately that says otherwise.
I wish that I would have shot this with my 5D3 and my Tokina 16-28 though...it was shot with my old 40D and Sigma 10-20...

Cycling

Never done any cycling shots so had a look to a local event. Got a spot pretty much on my own. Popped the 1D4 in my paws, 24-105 some Lee filters 2stop hard grad, a tweek of the focusing and just over a second burst hand held. Amazingly, it worked. Did a few others to. Wanted a few slow shutter shots but had to go home due to work.

Lenses from International Sellers on eBay

I am looking to purchase a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (non-VC) sometime in the next few months. I have seen that on ebay there are several international sellers that have the lens new for markedly less than, for example, Amazon. I was wondering if anyone has experience purchasing lenses this way. Do you have to pay import duties? If the lens comes from another country, will the warranty still be applicable in the US? Is there something else I'm not thinking of that may make this less of a deal than it seems?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Found a Canon 35mm f/1.4L lens for $900...

And I'm pretty sure I'm going to go ahead and buy it and sell my 50mm f/1.4 USM. But I wanted to check with some "experts" to see if there is anything I should be looking for.

For example, I know the 50mm f1.4 has AF issues, the 17-55 and the 100-400 are dust suckers (by rumor at the very least), etc.

So is there anything I need to be aware of about the Canon 35mm? Also, the new Sigma is reported to be crazy good wide open and it also is in the $900 range. Is one really that much better than the other?

What exactly is a 100% crop?

For years I've seen people post examples of a "100% crop" to show the sharpness of a lens or the noise level of a sensor. Today I was thinking about posting some images from a EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS that I just picked up and realized that I don't know how to do a 100% crop. Can someone provide brief instructions on how to do that? I'm using Lightroom 4 if it matters.

Should I buy a Speedlite?

I recently just got asked to shoot pre-prom photos for my high school. I'm a little undecided as to which I should buy, a fast lens (50mm 1.4) or a Speedlite (430 EXII). The shots will probably be taken at around dusk times. My fastest lens as of right now is my 40mm 2.8 or my 60mm macro 2.8 (focal range will not be usable for this occasion). Also, if you guys were wondering the flash will be used on camera. What do you guys suggest?

Color Differences, 5D3 vs 1D4

Colleagues: I shoot 5D3 and 1D4. I am a pretty experienced shooter. Recently on a mildly cloudy day I shot several hundred photos with each, under very very similar conditions (photos made from a boat on a lake of other boats on the same lake.) The general hue was mildly greener and muddier in the 1D4 than the 5D3. The image quality had no 'pop', and the images from the 5D3 were clearly superior. I carefully compared the settings (both 'standard'), the ASA, etc. I was able pretty much to correct this in Lightroom, though the white balance really did seem "off" in the 1D4. Does anyone have experience, insight, or further testing instructions they couljld offer me? Thank you for your time.

How much would you pay?

Hi guys! Well, I was reading about this auction which offers you to have a cup of coffee with Tim Cook at Apple headquarters. It's 17 days left and the current bid is already over $600k. https://www.charitybuzz.com/auctions/rfkcenter/catalog_items/337478

So, I was wondering how much would you pay to talk to the Canon Chairman or someone who's is directly in charge of development of Canon photo gear? Enjoy the rest of your weekend! :)

24-105L or Sigma 35.1.4 for 6D walk-around

I've been pretty happy with my 50D kit for general travel/nature/event photography, but I've been wanting to pick up a FF camera to achieve shallower DOF more easily for portraits and lower noise when shooting indoor events (e.g. my son's plays in dark theaters). I downloaded RAW samples from DPR for the 50D, 6D and 5D Mark III and played with them all in LR 4, and I was shocked at the difference between either FF and 50D (easily 2 stops in noise and better contrast across the board). I was leaning towards a 5D mark III, but I just can't justify the extra cash (as an amateur) and don't want the extra bulk and weight for travel, so I've settled on a 6D for its smaller size and GPS.

My dilemma, though, is whether to buy the kit with 24-105L or skip it and put the $500 towards a Sigma 35 1.4 HSM. I already have a 17-40L, 70-200 F4is and 85 1.8, so that wouldn't leave too big a gap in FL, and since what I'm really missing with my 50D is DOF control the large aperture 35 seems really appealing (particularly after the reviews I've read here). The 35 at 1.4-2 looks better than 24-105 at 5.6-8 to my eye. I used to shoot fixed FL lenses exclusively in my film days, so I know the pluses/minuses of that from a creativity standpoint and have no problem "zooming with my feet".

Any opinions of 24-105 vs 35 1.4 for a walk-around would be appreciated. Either way I intend to keep the 50D for now (probably bolted to the 100-400L for zoo/wildlife work).

Thanks

-Wade

Macro lens or attachments to make my current lenses go macro?

SO, hey hey gearheads, I can't think of a better place to ask this question. As most of you know, I shoot mostly weddings and portraits. One of the little things I'd like to improve on are ring shots. It's not that I don't like the shots that I am getting, but, I'd love to get in a little closer and the only lens I have that allows for really close focusing is the 16-35, which while it can get close, even at 35mm it's not as tight and DOF with that is not to my liking. I enjoy using the 50, 85 and 70-200 for that, but with the minimum focusing distance it requires a big crop to get the desired shot.

SO that leads to options. And I am not sure which way to go, and given the very limited use I'm seeking to fill, not sure I want to spend a ton of $$$.

Lenses:

100 2.8
100L 2.8
180L 3.5

or, I could go with an extension tube ---what are your thoughts on extension tubes? They are a fairly cheap fix which would get me in a bit closer, and I'd be able to use those on all my longer lenses.

Another option is the http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/87494-REG/Canon_2822A001_58mm_500D_Close_up_Lens.html

That one in particular is would fit my 85 1.8 --- its the cheapest option by far, but, again I have to wonder if that's enough. Do I need the versatility of the extension tube? Or, should I bag all of those ideas and snag one of the above mentioned lenses (I see the 180 macro used all the time on B&H...and I have heard that the 100L is also good for portraits...but, with a 85 1.8 and the 70-200, would I really use a 100 macro for portraits???????)

Again, it's not like I plan on diving into the insect world (yeah, of course once I can I probably will, but thats not the main idea here). Pretty much just wanting a way to get tighter shots of wedding rings, and looking to do so without spending an arm and a leg (I'd much rather snag a 135L than a macro lens..)

On the other end of things...I am considering a 2x teleconverter too. I have heard much more about those though...

Ideal walkaround Camera for Street Photography 3. Used as a second body by the pro's. Whatever you do dont go out and buy an EOS M or any other Mirrorless Camera, This little baby is just going to flatten the market when it gets going.
