More from Sigma in 2013

We’re told Sigma will announce a 135mm f/1.8 DG OS Art lens sometime in 2013. There could be up to 3 more Art lenses announced this year. We’ve previously heard they would be releasing a 24mm f/1.4 DG Art sometime in 2013.

There has been no mention of an f/2 or faster zoom for full frame cameras.

An update to the 50mm f/1.4 could also be on the horizon.

Lens Choice

Hey all,

With the rebates that are out there now, I have come across a dilemma for choosing a new lens.... Do I go with:

1) Sigma 70-200 OS, OR
2) Canon 70-200 USM...

Yes, if $$ were no object, the Canon 70-200 IS II would be a no brainer... BUT it is. The main differences I see are the lack of IS for the Canon and it being an older lens design/technology. The Sigma does seem to focus a bit slower, but how is it in real world use for sports and fast action? I would be using it on a gripped 7D.

Any thoughts or insight would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

My review of the 40mm STM

For $150, just buy it.

/review

I just received mine Friday, unboxed it, screwed it on to my 60D and rushed out the door to pick up my baby girl and then head over to my wife's work outing. The sun had already set behind the trees at the park (but not set on the horizon) when I snagged this pic (this is literally a snap shot and that's it - didn't have time or space to maneuver for anything more significant as I was SURROUNDED by people behind me and my wife was 2 seconds from handing me my little girl to take part in a 3-legged relay race)

**I just realized upon previewing this post that CR downsizes pics. So, just copy the url and paste for 1200 pixel wide versions of these pics**

That was shot at f/2.8, 1/200, ISO100 from a few feet away. PP'ing was all done in DPP and consists of DLO correction as well as other lens aberration corrections, sharpening @ 4 and RGB sharpening @ 125.

What's pretty amazing (to me anyway - perhaps y'all disagree) is the 100% crop

Color me impressed!

I managed to pick mine up for $142 (thanks to a heads-up on this site) from Adorama right as the rebates went into effect. I haven't spent $142 more efficiently since I took my first picture.

Any thoughts?

Also, I've just used DLO for the first time today. Anyone have any recommendations for a standard setting for the slider bar? I think this one was at 65. Thanks!

5D Mark III: 3 Bad AF Points

Hello I just got my new 5DM3 about 4 days ago. It has worked perfectly for me in this short period of time. But this morning I was checking out the accuracy of the outer AF points and all were focusing accurately until I got to the three top 5.6 cross points; if you orientate the camera into the landscape position, it would be the top three points, in the center block of 21, as seen through the viewfinder.

Every once in a while one of the three would attempt to focus, it would appear to move in incrementally a couple of mm at a time and then give up. This would take place say 1 out of 5 attempts, the other two rarely did anything. I tried removing the battery, changing the battery, and use a different lens, but nothing worked.

I have a 24-105L, 70-200 2.8 II and a Sigma 85 1.4. Of course rotating the camera to portrait position made no difference. My luck, both PMI Digital (who I purchased it through) and CPS are closed until Monday morning. I think I will call CPS in Newport News, VA first to see if they would want to take a look at this problem first or try to do an exchange with PMI. Yes, the solution is rather straight forward, but I thought I would post this just out of frustration with a brand new camera.

Safe to leave lens on camera?

I have my 70-200 f4L USM on my 7D and it got me wondering, with the weight of this lens (and other lenses), is it safe to leave the lens on the body at all times? If so, should the body be facing up with the weight of the lens pushing on the body? Or maybe should the camera be hanging down so the lens is pulling on the body?

Or should the lens be removed and a body cap used?

1DX Autofokus did not work when really cold -20 C

Any experience with the 1DX below -20C

I am often on remote locations and Expeditions. On a dogsledge Expedition i used a 1dx and a 5dm3. Temperatur was allways below -20C. We were staying in a tent and could only warmup the batterys in our sleepingbags. The 5d did well but the 1Dx did Not operate with autofocus. I never had these problems with my 1Dm3 and1Dm4.
The main problem in extreme cold are the batterys (and your nose) but never the autofocus.

Budget lens for birding ?

Hi all,

I'm from India and i'm new here. I am very interested in bird photography. I currently shoot with 550d (t2i ) and a 55-250 IS 1 lens.
The 55-250 lens is an amazing lens and i'm very happy with how sharp the pictures turn out to be. I feel the lens's af is fast enough to even capture birds in flight in-case the backdrop is sky. I havent used any expensive lenses till now. The only problem with the 55-250 lens is, reach . I'm missing out on too many good opportunities because i simply am not able to approach a bird by foot and get a good shot without having to crop a lot in PP .
So considering this , i'm thinking of upgrading my setup with a budget 1500 $'s ( My bro can buy the equipment in US and send me here ). What do you guys suggest ?
1.100-400 lens ?
2.what are the different versions of this lens ?
3.how does it couple with 550d (t2i) . how fast would be the autofocus with this body and lens ? I'm not sure how much the body would affect the speed of autofocus. It would be of great help if someone can explain how/how much the autofocus of the body would affect the performance of the lens .
4. I can wait for a couple of months too if there's an oppurtunity of the price going down for the lens. whats the lowest price you guys have seen on this lens ?
5. Or do you guys suggest me to buy a better body first and then rent lenses till i find the budget for the lens ?

Thanks for reading :)

Canon L Glass is currently priced at over $1200 / pound

Okay I'll admit I am crazy enough to put this analysis together. Then again after a year of retire (from Director of Marketing Analytics at a major CPG company) I miss number crunching.

Glad to share the data, I am sure that there a few items I missed. Right now all I am interested in is the top line. When I went deeper into the data, I found that older lens (2006 and early) had lower cost per pound $750 versus more current lenses $1,200. Lots of reasons for this - could be new lenses are more technologically advanced and harder to manufacture, include more expensive glass and metals, harder to raise prices than introduce a new product at a higher price point ...

60d or t5i, your help?

Hi, I'm looking to buy my wife a new camera, I was all set on buying her a T5i. I see now the 60d body only is selling for $661, my Question to you guys is, would you buy the 60d or the t5i? Will the T5i be better at higher ISOs than the 60d? Also, the main use of the camera will be for stills but she will also use for video once in a while?
Thanks in advance,
Anthony

Canon T5i & 18-55mm STM Sample Images

Hi All,
I took the new EOS Rebel T5i out earlier this week with the new 18-55mm IS STM kit lens. I've posted some pics on our blog http://handbdigital.blogspot.com and elsewhere http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/51309377, but thought I'd share a few different ones here.
I was really impressed with this setup given the price and intended market. The T5i delivers great JPEGs right out of the camera. The STM lens focuses quickly, is capable of some nice detail and background blur, and even has some pleasing bokeh (ok, you purists can criticize, but for a kit lens intended for a Rebel body, they quality is fantastic).
I'll be putting zoom samples in the Lens Forum. I'll also try and take some low light pics at some point, but I'd expect them to be fairly similar to the T4i.
Cheers,
Dan at H and B Digital.

Notes on the images:
1) Nice and sharp, great colors with the typically difficult reds, good contrast, and high quality bokeh (no polygonal edges, circles of uniform density). 1/320 sec. at f/5.0, ISO 100, at 46mm, 1.5 feet from subject. No crop or post-process.
2) Another sharp shot, the light greens a little washed but metering is otherwise accurate and colors fantastic on the flower. Bokeh a tiny bit muddy, but what do you want?!? 1/800 sec. at f/5.6, ISO 200, at 55mm, 2 feet from subject. No crop or post.
3) The closest I got to a portrait... Greens are great, this camera is awesome for street shooting. 1/320 at f/5.6, 55mm, 8.6m from subject, small crop (straightening).
4) Super detail and great distinguishing between various yellows, which some cameras have trouble with. 1/640 at f/4.5, ISO 200, at 32mm, 4 feet from subject.
