near future lens size and resolution

My interest is primarily with wildlife photography and in this thread I want to explore the near future (the next decade - if you can consider that near) of telephoto lens inovation. Over the past 2 or 3 decades telephoto lens size appears to have changed little - is this going to change over the next 10 to 20 years?

1. What specifically restricts lens size with existing DSLR technology? Does the distance from the sensor to the lens make enough of a difference that future telephoto lenses on mirrorless systems will be substantially smaller? (forgive me for assuming that mirrorless cameras will replace DSLR)

2. Ten years from now, when you're shooting with a 100mp mirrorless camera body, will it still be an advantage to shoot with a massive 600mm f4 lens, or will cropping to a 20mp image with a significantly smaller lens eliminate the need for a super-telephoto? There are certainly differences that will be difficult to overcome, such as tracking wildlife from a distance and accurately focusing at that distance with a smaller mm lens. Do you think these challenges will be met?

In a nutshell, 10 years from now (when I finally have 10k to spend on a lens) will I still want to purchase a 600mm 5kg lens for optimal image quality?

5D3 Pricing

Well, I was about to go ahead and pull the trigger on a 5D3 about 3 weeks ago ($2949) at B and H, but of course I procrastinated. In the last week or so it was back up to $3199 (more, but OK). Then today, it's $2999!!! I think instead of stocks, I will just invest in a whole bunch of 5D3's.....

Seriously though, anybody have any thoughts on when we can expect at least a little price drop? Right now D800's are $2796 at B and H, which seems like a pretty significant differential for 2 pretty good directly competing bodies...

I need mine by June, so hopefully a little reality sets in soon...

What made you choose Canon in the first place?

I picked up a Nikon 5100 and I actually kind of liked it. But then I thought to myself, why pay the same money for a Nikon that was not even made in Japan? So I went for Canon and got a 60D. Stupid reason I know. 3/4 of my friends shoot Nikon. I don't like to be asked to lend lenses. That's another reason. ;)

Sometimes I wonder if it was the right decision. I have a 6D now. Nikon D600 seems pretty attractive. I'm not going to switch over to Nikon. The switching cost would be too high. But are there things about Canon camera, lenses, or optical technology that are superior to Nikon? I'm not really looking for validation, but I'm curious to learn more about Canon since I consider myself a newbie. Please share your views.

Nikon D800 Value Dropping?

There is a almost new D800 on our local craigslist (not a scam) for $2100. I checked ebay and noted that there were a lot of sales in the $2200 range, some even included a cheap lens.

Why are people dumping them? I was tempted to get it as a 2nd body to my 5D MK III. I have several Nikon lenses. Finally, I decided that I'd pass it up, if others don't want them, I won't be able to resell it a year from now without losing money.
I did buy one new last May for $3K, and later sold it for $3200 when they were hot items. There are some better lenses now available or on the horizon, so the lens situation is not so bleak as it was.

I think I'll wait for a new backup body and see what the year brings. I just bought my 6th 40D this week, its great for my product photography, but isn't capable of ISO 6400 or 12800.

Please share your camera settings

Ken Rockwell claims that he doesn't need to shoot RAW and he said if you know what you are doing JPEG is fine. He also said the smallest size JPEG is good enough.

well I think I know what I'm doing but I need RAW. Anyway, my real question is
1. what size of RAW and JPEG do you normally use?
2. do you use camera NR at all? or do you use LR?
3. what settings would you advise against and for?

My macro rig

Just testing if i can post a pic here, if so heres the Canon 100L and canon bracket.Sorry struggling to insert an image, ah i think thats it?

Its rock solid stable compared to the usless £8 used bracket i got off ebay, and im pleased with the illumination. Its only 1:1 but its a start.

Canon 1.4X III vs Canon 2.0X III

I am looking at both the Canon 1.4X III and Canon 2.0X III. What I am confused is why they are both at the same price. Been reading some reviews on the web, but given that both are the same price, which one to choose? I am aware of the loss of 1 or 2 stops of light as well as image quality being not as sharp. I have a 7D and 5D3 with 70-200 2.8 II. I would love the notion of extending the reach to 640mm on my 7D, but I don't know if that means that my image quality would suffer greatly or settle for the 1.4X and be limited to 448mm. Or I can settle for 280mm or 400mm on my 5D3. My intent for the extra reach would be for wild life.

Any advise? Thanks in advance.

Keep my 70-200 f/4 IS?

I just bought a new 70-200 f/2.8 IS II and still have my 70-200 f/4 IS. I'm guessing others have probably "upgraded" as well and I'm wondering how many of you kept your f/4 or if you sold, any regret you had. I have the 85 f/1.2 II and 135 f/2 plus teleconverters so I could use those for travel or when I need lighter weight.

I'm just wondering if I'll ever use the f/4 again, but it's been one of my favorite lenses, so I'm not sure what to do.

IS mandatory? 70-200 f/4 IS vs. f/2.8 Non-IS

Well, title says it all. I've never shot with an IS telephoto lens and I was wondering if that should affect my next purchase? I don't do video whatsoever and I try to shoot handheld when possible (although I will 'pod it when necessary). The couple stops of Aperture seem to be quite a difference but I'm willing to compromise if the IS makes that much of a difference. As you all probably know, these lenses are within the same price range so the money isn't a factor. Thanks in advance!

* Most of my photography are static objects but I do like to shoot moving animals occasionally.

Body upgrade advice

Hi all,

I am in need of some educated advice. I am looking to move out of the rebel lineup. I have a T3 currently. I use an 85mm f/1.8 on it primarily.

I primarily enjoy portraits. What do you view as being my best option?

I can struggled with AF in lowlight with the T3 so I am looking for an upgrade when it comes to autofocus. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks.

7D2 or 5D3?

Wait for Canon 7D2 or move on Canon 5D3?

I am an amateur photographer that spends most of my free time trying to shoot wildlife... I currently have a 50D that I use primarily with a 400mm F5.6L lens, but will on occassion also go to 70-200 F2.8L

I have been waiting for the new Canon 7D2 to come out later this year, thinking that for my purposes it would make the most sense to stay with an APS-C sensor... but the more I read about the 5D3, the more I question if I should not act now...

Typically i find with the pictures I take, i will shoot nothing over ISO400 as i find the noise too much with the 50D.... and i am sure that with either the 7D2 or 5D3 - i would have much more range in terms of ISO...

In terms of cropping, I will often crop a photo to no more than 50%, as i find going more than that will affect the quality of the photo... again, I believe that with either of the 7D2 or 5D3, i would like be able to crop to a higher percentage...

I guess my big concern is that shooting with an APS-C camera and 400mm lens, that going to the 5D3, will not allow me to crop in to as tight a shot as I am currently doing....

And help or suggestions would be appreciated...

5DM3 Firmware Update

I'm very excited for this update if it will help with super low-light focusing (when using the assist from the speedlites).

However, I'm not sure how these updates are downloaded/installed. I've never done this before. Is it something which is downloaded via computer, placed onto my CF/SD card and then, once it's placed back into the camera it recognizes the new file? EOS Utility, maybe?

How many of you guys/gals have done this before? Is it difficult?

Random Thoughts

What do you do when....

A photo lab renders a photo that doesn't match your edit?

A client thinks you are a photoshop guru who can make the photo look totally different from what was present. For example, I've had brides want me to change a horses ears from being pricked backward to forward, remove salt shakers from tables, etc. What is appropriate and reasonable in this circumstance? I am a photographer not a photoshop guru.

100-400 f4.5-5.6L or 2x extender

I am planning on spending 2 weeks in Yellowstone National Park this summer with the hope of getting some good wildlife shots. My thought is that I will need to purchase new equipment to gain some reach in order to get the desired shots. My budget does not permit a significant purchase such as an expensive tele-length prime at this time. I am debating between the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L or a 2x extender.

The gear that I currently have:
Bodies: 5DM3, 550D
Longest lens: 70-200 f/2.8 IS mk2

Which option will likely yield the best IQ for the gear that I have and the results that I am striving for? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

cheap android tablet for 6D ??

i want to buy a cheap android tablet for my 6D.
7 inch would be fine, not bigger.
8-16gb should be enough, i don´t need to store much on it.

this tablet goes into my backpack and i will use this tablet only with my 6D & WIFI.

so a good strong WIFI connection and a nice display is all i need.
speed should be decent for using the eos remote app.

any advice what to buy?

is the nexus7 the best option?
or is there a cheaper alternative for me?

Firmware coming soon

Lots of questions about the firmware updates Canon announced a while back. A non official source has updated us on the progress of the software updates for the following 3 cameras.

EOS 5D Mark III

Firmware 1.2.0 (may be 1.2.1 when released) will be on our CF cards by the end of April. Canon USA also confirmed this for me.

EOS-1D X

There is no reported delay on the firmware update for the EOS-1D X. It will arrive in May as previously announced.

EOS-1D C

Another announcement may be coming at the end of April letting us know when we can expect the 25p at 4K update. One of the challenges is encrypting the firmware to combat hacking or reverse engineering of the software inside the camera.

As for the 120fps/720p mode that leaked in a photo a few weeks ago, that feature won’t appear in the final version of the firmware update due to “stability concerns”.
