Batteries and AF

Question for all of the collective wisdom here:

The other day, I let my sister borrow my 7d. She's used to my dad's 60D, and probably getting a rebel of her own, so I wasn't too concerned about her messing anything up. When she gave it back to me, it wasn't AFing- with any lens, regular or live view, nothing. When I MFd in one-shot mode, I got a focus recognition beep. Checked all the connectors, they were all clean. Finally, I looked at a pin diagram, and seeing that a pin provides 6v for the lens AF motor (something I logically knew, that was just the inspiration) I popped in a fresh battery. Suddenly, AF worked again!

My questions:
Has anyone ever observed behavior, where a battery shows 2 bars of remaining charge on the top LCD, and the camera takes shots, but doesn't have power to AF?
The battery I had in was OEM. I swapped in a Wasabi power LP-E6 clone- any OEM/3rd party compatibility issues? I'm inclined to think no, since the OEM was the one that caused the problem.
Should I do anything? At this point, this is purely an exercise in intellectual curiosity- that wasabi power LP-E6 has now taken 1,000 shots without issue, so I'm curious more than concerned.

Thanks!
Brian

Picked up a Zeiss 15mm f2.8

The hours and minutes ticked down last week, as I waited for the arrival of the new lens I had ordered. Yesterday was D day. And what a lens it is to hold :)
Perhaps not a great example of what this lens can do, but this is one of pet interests, astro-photography (and astro time lapse/star trails). Its sharp, from edge to edge. Well, this'll keep me busy for the weekend. Any work needed around the house can wait ;)

The southern sky. The Southern Cross and pointers are roughly in the middle, above the antenna (20sec, f2.8, ISO 3200, Canon 5D3)

Congratulations to Canon Service Centre - Australia

Hi All....

I have to just write a few lines to congratulate Canon Australia for their integrity and professionalism in dealing with an issue that was of my own doing and could have been a costly excercise. I use a 5D Mark III for landscape shooting and as I live by the sea there is alot of salt spray in my work.

Two weeks ago I noticed small spots appearing in my photos... After changing lens's I quickly found the camera's sensor to be the issue in that it needed to be cleaned. I purchased a cleaning kit from ebay which was sold with some fluid specifically made for cleaning full frame sensors and read the instructions. I also googled and read posts relating to cleaning sensors. Whatever possessed me to think that I was a camera technician I will never know.

As I progressed to cleaning the camera's sensor I noticed that the issue of the marks and spots only got worse and all I actually did was to move the spots around the screen. I also attempted to clean the prism as well but only made things worse.

Noticing the effects only getting worse I bundled the camera up and sent it to the Canon Service Centre for them to fix. After dismantling the camera this is what I received back from Canon....

Upon inspection unit found that an unauthorised person tried to clean the
CMOS sensor and has badly scratched it. Focusing assembly found scratched as
well and foreign particles found inside prism assembly. * This type of
repair is not covered by the terms of warranty. Quote to dismantle unit,
supply and fit listed parts to repair. Adjust the unit as required.
Reassemble, clean, check and test all functions.

CY3-1656-000 CMOS SENSOR ASS'Y W/O FB DATA $919.36
CY3-1655-000 SCREEN, FOCUS $6.03

Labour $314.00
Parts $925.39
Freight $13.00
Sub Total $1,252.39
GST $125.24

Quotation Total $1377.63

I had no other choice but to authorise the work and put the experience down to a lesson well learnt.....

The following day I received a call from Canon to say that after dismantling the camera and working on the sensor the technician had been able to polish/save it?? and all I was up for was a new prism and labour....total $286

Canon could have just gone ahead with the work and billed me for the $1377 but actually saved me nearly $1100.... thanks so much Canon. All this I might add whilst keeping me in the picture with what was going on and in a two day turn around period.

I just thought I would put this up to congratulate Canon on being honest with me and in doing so showing their professionalism and integrity... attributes sadly missing by some other companies..... In future I will be leaving this type of cleaning to the experts...a lesson well learnt...

Canon Cinema CN-E lenses compared to Canon EF

I haven´t found anything about the new lenses yet compared to the Canon EF lenses.
Had anyone a chance to play with one, make some photo or video shots and compare them to the well know lenses.
Reason for me to look into it, is that I´m going to Order myself a 1D C instead of the X and give my wife my 5D III.
Only intrested in the lenses Canon Cinema CN-E 24mm T1.5/ Canon Cinema CN-E 50mm T1.3 or Canon Cinema CN-E 85mm T1.3.

Thanks

diy ideas on how to protect camera from rain?

Hey y'all! So next week I'll be shooting a tournament outdoors. It is likely it will rain but I still need to shoot. I'd be using my rebel XSi and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II lens. The latter is weatherproof -so I don't need to worry about covering my lens right? but I can't say the same for my rebel.

Any ideas on making a makeshift dslr rain cover?

How much light(watts) do you need to shoot f8 to f11 in studio

I plan to buy a Studio strobe lighting set.

Here is my plan:
1. Setup location, my garage
2. Shooting F-stops, min f8 prefer f11
3. Shutter speed, 1/125 or faster
4. 100ISO
5. Budget $300 to $600 (lower better, don't plan to use much)

You guys know the min light(watts) I should be looking for? or any good suggestions?

Thanks

"I am boycotting Nikon" campaign

For once, I'm really happy to be a Canon shooter - no matter what the dynamic range is :-)

Animal rights activists have targeted (doh) Nikon for a campaign because the evil empire is not only selling cameras for shooting (doh) baby pets but also rifle scopes so you're able to take not only the picture back home, but also the real thing... plus they sponsor trophy hunting in Africa for watermarked shots.

If this is over the top or a legit criticism of business practice is up to you to decide and I certainly don't want a political discussion or even a flame war, but I'm posting this as information because no Canonista should be ignorant about public relation events that for once hurt the main competitor:

Introducing the MōVI Stabilizer

MōVI M10

Vincent Laforet began hyping this product this week, and here it is.

Says Vincent about the MōVI

“….the beauty of this device is how quickly you can also make more simple shots. A push or slide is done in seconds and near perfectly. You can add a tilt or pan to that too to make it even fancier if you’d like with little effort. And the speed at which you can work is hard for many producers (including a friend and long time producer I worked with on a commercial this week… until he sees the results and how quickly you can get them.) Then you run down stairs, walk across a busy intersection, or ride in a vehicle and your head will certainly spin…”

About the MōVI M10 (From Freefly Systems)

A handheld 3-axis digital stabilized camera gimbal, so advanced, it redefines the possibilities for camera movement. The heart of the gimbal is Freefly’s proprietary high performance IMU and brushless direct drive system. The gimbal is 100% custom designed in-house by our engineering team. No compromises were made to accommodate off-the-shelf brushless motors, motor drives or IMUs. Creating the gimbal from scratch allowed Freefly to precisely execute our vision for the next generation of stabilized camera gimbals. In creating this camera gimbal, we aim to empower a new era of stabilized cinematography. Freefly MōVI – “The New Moving Picture.”

MōVI in Action

Below Vincent Laforet and Freefly systems talk about the advantages of the new stabilizer. In practice it looks extremely cool and the results seem to speak for themselves. The entry level M5 is $7,500 and the mid level M10 is $15,000.

Impact of falling Yen on Prices

Last November the change rate was 80 Yen to the $. Today it is 93. That is a 16% changes. Does anyone know how Canon prices? Especially as international rates change? Who profits (Canon US or Canon corp) when the exchange rises? Will we see new products introduced at lower prices (such as the 200-400 F4), more details, or simply Canon profits increase?

What does Vincent Laforet Think is a Game Changer?

A teaser from Laforet
Apparently Vincent Laforet is going to share a product shortly that he calls a “game changer” for the video shooter. He swears it’s not a camera.

In case you didn’t know, Vincent Laforet did the “Reverie” video that changed the DSLR world when the 5D Mark II launched.

Says Vincent…

“I’m predicting that this device will follow a very similar path and will stir things up (in a positive way) in our industry. I know it has already changed the way I shoot. And while it will be more expensive than the Canon 5D MKII was, its price will pale in comparison to the current tools that it will come to compliment or perhaps even replace.”

I guess we’re going to know shortly.

25p/4K for the 1D C

We received a report today that issues have been found with the “final test” version of the new firmware for the EOS-1D C.

We’re told the issue is compatibility issues with HDMI external recorders. Some users have reported that there were corrupted frames when recording an uncompressed signal from EOS-1D C’s HDMI port.

No word how much of the delay their could possibly. Though the source did speculate late April or early May is a good possibility now.

Just bought a 6D

I've been using my 7D for a couple years, but have been dying to get a full frame for a while. I debated selling the 7D and getting a 5DIII, but decided to keep the 7D and pick up a 6D. I can use them both with my 24-105L and 70-300L lenses. I love the reach and speed of the 7D for birds/sports.

On my 7D I've used auto ISO with a maximum of 800. What would you suggest is a comparable maximum ISO for the 6D?

Thanks.

Finally a DXOMark win for Canon

At a per megapixel level the Canon 5D Mark III sensor is sharper than the D800 and with the lens line up Canon sensor manages to get the best out of the lenses compared to the Nikon!

Finally some good news :D

Love or Hate Canon Rumors Forum

I don't know how many times I've sworn I was going to just stop posting on this forum.

After about the 10,000th thread regurgitating the same talking points it all becomes a little too much. Then someone posts something interesting or insightful and I am hooked again.

Things I like:

1) It's truly an international forum. I like hearing the perspective of people from all over the world and feeling that in some small way I have a connection to those in other countries.

2) There are some very good professionals who take the time to participate and share their knowledge.

3) There are people willing to share their personal experience and advice on equipment purchases.

4) There are people who know far more about the technology of today's equipment than I will ever know or even care to know.

5) Occasionally I pick up usable tips.

Things I hate:

1) Reading 10 million threads all repeating the same talking points on issues like sensors, dynamic range, ISO performance, shadow detail, etc. etc. Most of which don't have the tiniest thing to do with the quality of an image.

2) A handful of obsessive individuals who hijack nearly every thread and repeat the same points over and over again, arguing over obscure issues that have nothing to do with the original subject.

3) Individuals who "critique" the photos others post, pointing out insignificant or non-existent "flaws" that only shows how little they themselves know about composition and what makes a compelling photograph.

4) Individuals who post pictures asking for critiques, not knowing that most of opinions they get on this forum will consist of very bad advice. (And then taking offense at the ill-informed critiques)

5) Moderators who are often too quick to hit the "delete" button.

6) Commenters who have no sense of humor themselves and can't abide anyone else having a sense of humor.

I could go on, but that's a good start. How about others? What is it that makes you want to never again return to this site. And what is it that keeps bringing you back here?
