Can't decide on a good deal of 5D Mark 3 ($3000 budget)

Hello everyone,

A little bit about my history. I've been reading this website for a long time, but now I need your help with some decision. Before, I used to have a sweet time with 7D with 24-70mm 2.8L for about 3 months but sold it due to financial need at that time. Now, I have around $3000 and want to get involved to photography again.

My initial decision was getting 6D for around $1600 (a great local deal) and spend the rest on 24-70mm 2.8L again. But I've been surfing around forums and most people who owned 6D recommend to get 5D3 if possible. If that is the case, I have to setting with few prime lens like 50mm 1.4 to learn more about photography and save a bit more for new lens.

I found a great deal for brand new 5D3 for $2700, should I pull the trigger ? Or getting a brand new 6D for $1600 and 24-70mm 2.8L ? Or perhaps, a brand new 7D for $1000 (local) and spend $2000 on 24-70mm 2.8L II ?

Please give me constructive opinion.

Thanks

1.4 TC III vs 60D, Is this test accurate?

Hi,

I am shooting on 5D3 with a 70-200 2.8 II and wanted a little bit of extra reach.

I checked this test with more settings but always the 1.4 TC III is way better than the 60D

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=687&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=4&API=1&LensComp=687&CameraComp=736&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=2&APIComp=0

This is surprising for me. I do not have any possibility to test, but somehow I still think that the 60D/7D + 70-200 2.8II, will make sharper images over 5D3 + 1.4 TC III + 70-200 2.8 II.

(please stick only to this two options and only at which would give sharper image, not AF speed and stuff like that)

Fingerprint "investigation"? (ef 35mm f/1.4L)

Received new ef 35mm f/1.4L from AMZN this morning. Had a tiny person's fingerprints smeared in an arc across front element. Also had the faintest of scratches around contacts, very minor, but indicating somebody had already tried the lens.

Expected usual replacement scenario, but was told by a rep and a supervisor that this item was under investigation by AMZN because of many similar complaints from customers.

Sure enough, even though over the weekend there was no note about "Only XX left in stock; more on the way," the item is currently only available from third-party sellers.

Now, I've done a preliminary check of the lens. Seems wonderful, indoors by incandescent and outside in super-bright daylight. Image quality great, and I love that shallow depth of field and minimal distortion. The fingerprints wiped off and the front element looks to be scratch free, as does the rear.

Question: Who would keep, who would return for refund?

Another question: Has anybody else received a new Canon lens with fingerprints? (This is my first time seeing them.)

Thanks!

100 + 200 vs 70-200 2.8 non-IS?

I have the 100 2.0 and 200 2.8 for indoor volleyball and other stuff, but am teetering on considering selling them for a single 70-200 2.8 non-IS. My other lens is the tremendous Sigma 17-50 so the zoom would have the same filter size (polarizing, etc.).
I really like the image quality from the primes and the smaller size is a bonus, but keep coming back to the zoom. Would I take a hit in image quality? If even a little I'll likely stick with the primes.
Thanks for any insight.

5DMIII+70-300L w/ kenko tc or 40d+70-300L or 5d miii image cropped ?

Hi - Anyone with Kenko TC experienc, would you be able to suggest
Which one of these provide better iq and overall better ?
5D mark III w/ 70-300mm L with Kenko 1.4 tc
Or
5d mark III w/ 70-300mm L cropped
Or
40d w/ 70-300mm L (considering the 1.6x crop factor or APSC)

I have all the three except the TC. Wondering if it is worth spending the money on kenko when I have the other two options. I heard mixed reviews abt kenko when mounted on the 70-300

300mm F/2.8 non-IS... worth it?

Hello all,

I'm an 18 year old sports photographer in Dublin, Ireland and I'm trying to build up my reputation and get out there more. My main used lens at the moment is the 300mm F/4L non-IS on a 1D Mark IIN and I'm looking at getting a 300mm F/2,8 so I can work under floodlights for rugby/football.

I hear a lot of bad about this lens, because Canon will no-longer repair it and it focuses by wire (not entirely sure what that means). If I could get it for around, or a little over €1,000 ($1,200 USD or so) in reasonably good condition is it worth it? Would it be a stupid thing to do? Would going for a Sigma 120-300mm F/2.8 OS be smarter? I could probably get one of them for the same price, or maybe the first version of the Sigma.

I'm on a very tight budget, as I'm a student and still trying to be able to even afford a car and living costs, so the 300 F/2.8 IS is definitely out of the question, but I would definitely consider any third party F/2.8 alternatives if there are any.
Everything is ridiculously expensive in Ireland, I would contemplate going to the UK to get things cheaper even. I was quoted €500 for a Pelican 1510 case from the biggest camera shop in Dublin, it was €260 to order it online from the UK, inclusive of shipping...

Thanks.

Just picked up a ligtly used 40D as a back up for my 7D!

I find it amazing how many people dump their equipment when new stuff comes out, believing that the new stuff is just miles ahead of what they had been using, (and had been getting great results with to boot!)

I have been looking for a nice 40D w/ grip as a backup/second body to my current 7D. For the money you cannot beat the 40D. The image quality is fantastic (for 10.1mp) and it is as fast as ever. I truly believe this was one of Canon's most overlooked cameras. It's run only lasted a year and many people passed it over when the 50D came out. I have used/owned the 40D and 50D and I love the 40D for the price and image quality. My first 40D I bought used (for $500 bucks) and I replaced it with the 7D when it was stolen about 2 years ago.

I found a really nice 40D with a Canon bg-e2n grip for about $350 bucks. I can't complain. The older cameras may be scoffed at, but they are far from done.

If you have an older body and think you need to "upgrade", take a look at your glass. Good glass will take you farther than any camera body can.

Like a good friend of mine says, "Learn your equipment and learn it well, you will be miles ahead of someone who solely thinks newer is better but does not know how to use it."

My Personal Best Landscape Shots - Advice/Critizism accecpted

So for the Easter weekend. My parents and I decided to take a trip to Palm Springs. We rode this Sky Tram that took us to a place called Desert Trails (?) I was pretty sick so I wasn't completely in. I didn't look at my camera's screen after I took my shoots becuase I was out of it. So when I got home, I opened the photos in Lightroom and with a little color adjustment, turns out to be my personal favorite photos.

I don't know how to link Flickr photos to CR, so I'm just going to post a link to my Flickr account :D

http://www.flickr.com/photos/synomis/sets/72157633145608770/

Please let me know what you guys think I should do. I left all the EXIF data so you guys can see how I was shooting.

I used lightroom to adjust contrast, colors, and noise.

Film! What's the best Film left? Just got an EOS 1V Film SLR... and an FD A-1...

Hello everyone!!! :)

As the title says. I just picked up an EOS 1V... or at least it will be in my hands at the end of the week. I also will have an FD mount Canon A-1.

So... What is the best film to use? What are the best options left? I prefer black and white for the most part, but I will also use some color and IR as well. Any difference in what I should use in the 1V vs the A-1?

Any thoughts on what FD lenses I should pick up for the A-1? I have a little budget for this, but most seem inexpensive.

Also, any other film tips?

Thanks everybody! :D

I bit the bullet!

I've been struggling with getting a longer lens for way too long. I have debated 300 f4 vs. 70-300 L vs. 400 f5.6 vs. 100-400 vs. 70-300 DO (not too much consideration) along with the TC issue (I have the Canon 1.4 but would need a Kenko to use with some of the above). You see what I have below.

Thought I'd settled on the 70-300 L after taking some shots of the moon with my 70-200+TC last week. The night was cloudy but the shots were not too bad with cropping post (BTW, the Redged legs are great but I'll probably up the ballhead in the future). I knew what I wanted and was just waiting for the right price.

Then, the 2 day Canon refurb sale comes up. As I was ready to buy a 70-300 L, I had a quick change of heart and purchased the 100-400! Should arrive soon. I truly hope there is no "buyer's remorse," but my thoughts were to expand my options with some IS and little overlap. We'll see.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM

Four pictures to show what the lens can deliver. Shot with a 6D.

I guess that I don't need to present the subject of the first one! I liked the light passing through the clouds. 70 mm, f/8.

The second one was shot using the macro mode. Classic cat photo but I find it nice and very sharp. I was very close to the cat. ISO3200.

The third one is a weird building. I wanted to increase the feeling of strangeness. Tack sharp! A bit cropped. 44mm and f/8.

The fourth one was taken handheld at ISO3200, 24mm and f/4. I am pretty impressed with both the ISO capabilities of the 6D and the stabilization of the lens.
