what adaptors do i need

Today looking round a charity shop i found an old canon t70 with an Tamron adaptall 2 24mm f2.5 lense on and a flash gun so i bought it just incase the lense was any good for my 650D, when i got home i opened the Tamron case only to find a canon 50mm lense, and all i paid for all this was £8 :) The camera is FD fitting but i would like to use the two lenses on my 650d, i know i need adaptors and have seen some on ebay but i want to know if there are different types, for instance, when i look for adaptor2 to ef mount it says in the description that some things like auto focus and other things which i forget now wont work, is this the case with all the tamron to ef adaptors? Also i have read somewhere that adaptor rings with ridges on the inside can cause some sort of distortion, but they all have ridges.
Then there is the 50mm lense, i know i need an fd-ef adaptor but i have noticed some that are just rings and some that have an optic in, whats the deal there, which do i need? Any advice would be appreciated, iv'e been taking pictures for a few years but only just got into slr.

MANUAL FOCUS... how do you know you got it perfect!?

Hi,
I have a canon 60d and I want to use it for video. I was tempted to sell it and get t4i because of the continuous Autofocus feature, but I've read over and over again, that u should manually focus for video anyways.

But here's the thing, just by looking at the little LCD on my camera, I cant tell if everything is fully focused. It might look focused when its small, but when you blow it up on your monitor, it might be a just a bit out of focus. for a professional video, this is not acceptable.

Am I missing something, is there a secret to manual focus? is there a feature I should be using? or do you all just have super human vision, and can tell just by looking at on camera LCD?

Thanks

Basketball

Hi,

couldn't find a thread dedicated to basketball, so thought I'll open one with some examples from the game Gmunden vs. Kapfenberg a month ago. All shot with 5DIII and 70-200 2.8 II. (The full set can be found here http://www.flickr.com/photos/80270150@N06/sets/72157632875985126/ )

Any comments highly welcome, especially in terms of noise reduction - this is a topic where I'm just learning :)

Boston Night Walk

Hi all-

I was in Boston this weekend and decided to walk from Central square to the hotel, because I needed to stretch my legs after a long day of sitting. Ended up getting a couple shots I was pretty happy with... hope you enjoy!

(Note that this is my first foray into both B+W and street shooting, so I more than welcome critique, as I have lots to learn.) Thanks!

EXIF: (all with 7d)
1) EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 @ f/2.8, 28mm, 1/8 sec ISO 1600
2) EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 @ f/8, 17mm, 10.0 sec ISO 100
3) EF 70-200 f/2.8 L @ f/5.6, 78mm (various times, merged in PS CS6 to HDR Pro) ISO 800

didn't have a tripod, so set it on a bridge railing for #2. Oh, and the last one was the next morning at sunrise, through the hotel window, which definitely cost it something, but it was the best I could do at the time...

2x cpl as nd fader?

I recently bought a 10 stop nd filter and a cpl filter. Since the 10 stop is very nice for the usual people removal, water/sky blur as predicted by some it has to be accompanied by a brighter nd filter to complete the setup.

Question: I read that the nd faders are nothing more than two polarizers together, so if I add another b+w xs-pro mrc2 cpl to my existing b+w slim mrc that should do the trick?

This is my current research concerning the "stacked" solution, it even seems to have advantages...

(-) vignetting on ultrawide if stacking the same size
(-) more hassle to adjust, no scale
(-) iq loss due to more space between filters(?)
(-) uv leakage in addition to ir (like in non hot-mirror nd filters)

(+) another cpl is cheaper than a vari-nd
(+) cleanable since the two glass layers can be removed
(+) both filters usable independently
(+) it's possible to adjust the rear polarizer angle, important for the usual cpl shots with added nd effect

24mm (not is) 2.8 prime or 17-40 l zoom?

was gonna get me a 24mm 2.8 prime but similar money second hand i have been tempted by the L lens 17-40

im just after a starter multi task WA which is really sharp, has anybody got real world advice on the 24mm focal length on both lenses at similar apertures?

obviously one has bigger aperture (for lower light/street stuff/groups maybe) and the other is a zoom from 17-40 which is more fun!

i read the 17-40 can be soft edged compared to the 24, but every picture ive seen the 17-40 seems be awesome!

thoughts?

Canon 6D Wireless Connection Problems to iPhone Solved

I could not get my iPhone 5 to connect to the 6D's wireless network, even though my iPad 2 would connect. I tried a variety of things to establish the connection, including contacting Canon Support, and was very frustrated. I thought, perhaps some other app on the iPhone was interfering, and I even considered resetting the iPhone to factory settings to test that hypothesis. But it was going to be a horrendous task to then re-establish all my apps, etc. I continued to do a lot of experimenting and eventually found a solution. Now I can connect my iPhone to the 6D's wireless network and use the Canon EOS Remote App on my iOS device. If you are also having a problem establishing this connection, try the steps I posted here: http://www.tripodclamps.com/2013/02/26/canon-6d-and-wireless-connection-to-an-iphone/

Going wider?

We’ve spoken about the existence of an EF 14-24 f/2.8L in the past, a lens that a lot of people want to see come to fruition.

We’ve been told that an EF 12-24 f/2.8L exists in prototype form and could become a product instead of the EF 14-24 f/2.8L. I can only recall Sigma making such a lens for full frame cameras. Going this wide would certainly put some space between the cheaper (assuming based on Canon pricing history) EF 17-40 f/4L and EF 16-35 f/2.8L II.

This is the first I have heard of an EF 12-24 f/2.8L, so take it with a big grain of salt. This could be a better range in an f/4 variant, as it would be great for both full frame and APS-C and would really reduce size and weight compared to a 2.8 version.

It has been nearly a year after the 600ex-rt release, and not even a rumor has surfaced about the 430ex2 succesor - just the theory that Canon is bound to update the "little brother" sooner or later. Will they indeed? Vote here and let's see

EOS 6D with Kit, either Canon 24-105 F4 L or Tamron 28-300mm Di VC Macro

Hello All
I am currently evaluating if I should upgrade my EOS 550D with a really nice 6D. The main reasons for this are:
- bigger body, but still not as big as the 550D with the battery kit mounted, thus it's better in hand
- bigger viewfinder
- MUCH better low light performance (probably the main reason)
- full frame sensor (a little bit more detail)
The main use of the camera is everyday pictures. I always carry my 550D with a Sigma 18-125 lens with me around and I like the range of this lens. I picture mostly animals, landscapes and buildings, but normally no people.
I compared the two lenses over at Dxomark, here the compare with the 5D MK2: http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Lenses/Compare-Camera-Lenses/Compare-lenses/(lens1)/211/(brand)/Tamron/(camera1)/483/(lens2)/164/(brand2)/Canon/(camera2)/483
The canon is a bit sharper, but with "only" 1/3 of reach. I don't think I'll feel the difference of 24mm to 28mm at all with my shooting habits.
What do you think, should I take the better and sharper Canon lens, but loose quite a bit reach, or is the difference in sharpness anyway not visible if I'm not going to pixel peep?
Thanks
Patrick

sigma 85 1.4 focus problem

I bought a Sigma 85 1.4 about 8 months ago and am looking for feedback from other users. It focuses fine at longer distances, but at or near the close focus limit it hunts continuously and will not autofocus. I have to switch to manual focus to shoot close subjects. Is this just a quirk of my copy or does this happen to others? I am using a 5D2, which I know is not the fastest focusing camera, but I have it locked on center focus point and this problem happens even with still subjects (and does not happen with any other lens).

Also, is this something Sigma would or could fix under warranty if I contact them? (I will likely try anyway, just wondering if anyone else has done this with success).

Sigma 105mm F/2.8 Macro EX DG Review

The Sigma 105mm F/2.8 Macro EX DG is one of the best deals I have ever come across in my short time in photography. I think that the 90-180mm range of macro lenses are some of the most versatile lenses. They are usable for a lot more then just macro, they can do great portraits, wildlife, action, and just anything where you need the most amount of detail. With most macro lenses starting out at F/2.8, they are great for shallow depth of field, but also stop down to as far as F/45 so you can get as much of your subject in focus, an importent thing when doing macro photography. I got my lens for only $300 in mint condition and I would recommend it to everyone, but not without warning. The autofocus was alright when it was on my T1i, but when using my 5D MKII, a lot of my shots have been out of focus and I have had to check my focus with live view. I don't know if it is an electronics problem or if it is that my 5D and lens are on oposite spectrums of the autofocus tolerance and I need to do some micro adjusting. But while the autofocus is bad, this lens is great for video as it has a very smooth focus ring that is a joy to turn. For portait this lens is great at around 3.5 this lens is great for portait as it give enough depth of field but still has pretty circular bokeh, it is importent to remember this lens only has eight straight apature blades rather than a nicer nine rounded. Overall sharpness and performance of this lens is great and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to get into macro as this lens serves so many purposes, you will definitely get your moneys worth out of it.

Fun with fire

I had some fun with fire one saturday afternoon.

I first poured water into the glass, and added some food coloring as well. I then poured A TON of lighter fluid on top, and lit it. I had an assistant drop an ice cube from outside the frame, and I fired the camera through EOS Utility at the same moment the ice cube hit the water. A lot of trial and error.......
