Nikon finally Admits D600 Dust Problem

http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18180
Well, they at least admitted what many owners have known for months, but are still in denial that there is any widespread problem. Why can't Nikon just be straight forward and admit the issue in a timely manner? They have been hurt by poor sales and a bad rep over this, when they could have sent out a letter like this long ago.
The answer is likely that users who haven't checked their sensor and do not even know how, will send in their camera for a cleaning. I hope they have resolved it with newer production units, but nothing is said or admitted there either.

Extenders - Kenko vs Canon 1.4's & 2.0's

Hi guys, I'm new to the extender world. Would love some advice.

Tossing up between the;

Canon 1.4 iii
Canon 2.0 iii
Kenko 1.4 Pro 300
Kenko 2.0 Pro 300

One of the above + Kenko Extension Tube Set.

Would love some advice on their pros & cons and how they compare against one another.
I have a 100L & might use it on a future 135L

What do you suggest?

Samples would be great ;D

Cheers!

5D mk 3 2 quick questions

On mobile phone so will keep this brief as I can't find in manual:
1. Why does focusing sometimes flash AF point (av) sometimes not?

2. What is the process begins focus recomposing? Half press shutter on point, then keep half pressed while I frame and then click? Also what would be the point? If subject moves or if you want to use stronger AF points is my only guess.

Many thanks

Stef

Which flash for a 5d mkIII

Just got my 5d mkIII, and it's great...no regrets splashing out on it. But now I want to get a flash unit but cannot decide which one to go for. Now I will only use it for fill in during the day and at night, I do not do any studio work. So do I really need the all singing and dancing 600ex-rt or will the 430exIi be enough?

Any advice wouldbe gratefully received!

Magazines for the BG-E11 - when and/or where to buy

Dear Canonistas,

I've been looking all over the web for a separate battery magazine for the 5D3 grip, to hold extra LP-E6 batteries, for quick changing. I found that the part in question is called the BGM-E11L (the BGM-E11A is the AA-holding variety) but I can't find it on sale anywhere. For instance, the 5D2 magazine, the BGM-E6, can simply be bought at B&H.

Do I need to find a service center for parts like this? Does it usually take a few years before Canon puts 'em on sale? Are they for CPS peeps only? Do I have the wrong type number? And if all else fails: does anyone know of an aftermarket grip with identical magazines?

Thanks in advance for your esteemed input :)

Canon 35 2.0 IS vs Sigma 35 1.4

I know this topic has sorta been beaten to death, but I'm still having a tough time with it. Everyone says to get the Sigma unless you need the IS, which I feel maybe I do. Or maybe wait for a 35L II or 50L with IS. Or just wait for price drops on the 35 IS?

I take mostly event or food/beverage photos in poorly lit restaurants/bars, handheld, on a 5D mkIII. In that case, does it make sense to take the lower IQ for the IS? Or go with the Sigma and always pump up the ISO?

For non-studio, non-tripod, low light situations, does that change people's recommendations? Or is resolution/fstop always king?

Any thoughts welcome.

price drop on colormunki photo

I had planned on buying a colormunki photo at amazon today and had the webpage open on my browser most of the day waiting for time to get to it. Once I dropped it in my cart I found that the price fortuitously dropped from $449 to $399. I see a few other sites have done the same. Not sure what's up but if you've been looking to buy one sometime, just wanted to let you know they're currently $50 cheaper (which means that as soon as I hit "buy" they're gonna release a newer more amazing than ever model, I'm sure......)

Compost
http://www.stockhammedia.com/2013/02/22/2152/

I learned the reason, yesterday, why a pile mulch begins to "steam" after sitting a few days. It's the process of becoming compost =-) so since I've produced the video "Mulch" I had no choice but to produce a new video called "Compost" which is simply focusing on the vapor rising from the compost as bacteria slowly converts it to a substance that is great for spreading on your flowers =-)

7D + 400/5.6 + TC?

I'm new to Canon Rumors and so glad I found it because it's been a great source of knowledge for me. I recently bought a 400/5.6 mainly for birding and wildlife photography. I chose that particular lens because of its relatively low cost compared to the other super telephotos in Canon's lineup. I've been thinking about getting a TC to use in combination with my 7D and 400 for the extra reach but am concerned this combination might not work because of an issue with F8 center point AF I've seen mentioned before. I don't fully understand what this is about but would like to be sure that the TC will work before I spend the money on it. Any enlightenment on this topic is greatly appreciated as I may be totally off base in my understanding. :-\

Canon used to make 320 gigapixel image….

To see the gigapixel image and share your favourite views of London visit:http://btlondon2012.co.uk/

An amazing image of London taken from the top of the BT Tower has set a new record for the world’s largest panoramic photo. The image shows a full 360 degree view of London in incredible detail.

The 320 gigapixel image, taken by expert photography firm 360Cities, comprises more than 48,000 individual frames which have been collated into a single panorama by a powerful workstation. It is the first time that an image of this magnitude has ever been attempted, and it took several months to create due to the scale of the endeavour. If printed at normal photographic resolution, the BT Tower panorama would be 98 meters across and 24 meters tall, almost as big as Buckingham Palace. In comparison, the last record attempt for a London panorama was 80 gigapixels, taken from Centrepoint in 2010.

The images were taken after the end of London 2012, the first digital Games. Londoners, tourists and those who work in the capital are now being asked to share their favourite views of the capital, as a permanent record of London’s year in the global spotlight.

As the official communications services partner for London 2012, BT played a vital role in ensuring the Games were the most connected ever, with millions of people enjoying sharing their experiences of the sporting and cultural action via social media. BT Tower played its part in the celebration, sharing news of every single medal won, live stats and scores on its giant 360 degree LED screen.

Suzi Williams, director, BT Group Marketing & Brand, said, “The BT Tower is such an iconic London landmark, and became a focus for the capital’s celebrations in 2012, what better way to capture that remarkable year than with a full panoramic photograph taken from its roof. This isn’t just a world record for the BT Tower, it’s for London and the people who live, work in or visit the capital. Take a look, and share your favourite London places and landmarks.”

Steve Hercher, director, 360Cities, said, “We were honoured to be chosen by BT to attempt this world record panorama and make our own contribution to commemorating the wonderful London 2012 Games. So many unknowns and variables had to be addressed in the planning of this unprecedented shoot, really the first of its kind. Software and hardware were pushed to the limits, and rain, wind and other potential stumbling blocks had to be dealt with. Our photography team of Jeffrey Martin, Tom Mills and Holger Schulze did an amazing job and not a single individual frame from the more than 48,000 planned was missed.”

Rainer Fuehres, Head of Consumer Imaging Group, Canon Europe, said: “The goal of empowering people to take the next step on their personal photographic journeys drives every product we create, and this breath-taking image truly takes this philosophy to the extreme. Since its launch, the EOS 7D has caught the imagination of enthusiasts around the world so we were pleased to support such an exciting and challenging project with a camera that so many people are using to capture their own moments of inspiration.”

Also, our old friend Buzby is hiding in the gigapixel image too. Find him, and you could be one of three winners in our competition. People are selected at random, the first winner will receive an iPad, a year’s free broadband, and a trip to the top of the BT Tower to see the view in person. Second and third place win an iPad. Full terms and conditions, please see http://www.btplc.com/gigapixel/

Project by numbers:

• 320 – the number of gigapixels in the photo

• 48,640 – the number of individual images shot

• 3 – the number of days it took to shoot all the individual photos

• 3 – the number of months over which the computer processed the final result

• 60,000 – times bigger than an iPhone 4 photo

• 98 – the number of meters long if printed in normal photographic resolution

• 24 – the number of meters high if printed in normal photographic resolution

• 29th – The floor at the BT Tower where the photos were taken

• 20 – number of miles distant to the viewable horizon

Technical photographic information, and how the photo was taken:

• Working over a period of three chilly days in 2012, the 360Cities team spent hours on the 29th floor outdoor platform of the BT Tower working with four cameras to record the 48,640 images comprising the panorama.

• Four Canon EOS 7D cameras with EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM lenses and Extender EF 2x III teleconverters were mounted on Clauss company Rodeon VR Head ST robotic panorama heads and positioned in four secure locations around the 29th floor platform.

• The Clauss company robotic panorama heads are capable of 72,000 steps in a single 360 degree arc, and in this case were set to fire four frames a second.

• Laptops monitored a live preview of the progress of the shoot, which was accomplished in the teeth of sub-freezing temperatures and occasional 50 mph winds high above London.

• The 360Cities photography team of Jeffrey Martin, Tom Mills and Holger Schulze ensured that not a single individual frame from the more than 48,000 planned was missed.

• The raw images were then processed over a multi-week period using Fujitsu Technology Solutions’ Celsius R920 workstation with 256GB of RAM and 16 cores at 3.1GHz, and Autopano Giga panorama stitching software from Kolor.

• The resulting online interactive version of the photo is presented in multi-layered, tiled resolution that permits zooming in to view extreme details, and is composed of millions of individual image tiles.

Transition from Nikon to Canon

Hello everyone.

I am switching to canon, Mainly because I want to buy a CANON full frame after 2 years and most of my friends use canon. But for the time before that I want to USE a mid range canon and enrich my lens collection.

Here is my question.
1. I am stuck between 60D and 650D & in my country 650D is 130USD less.
2. 40mm f/2.8 pancake, can I use this lens in 60d and in Canon full frames 5d3,6d etc as well?
3. 50mm 1.8 II, 40mm pancake and 18-55kit lens which will give the sharpest image with the 60d or 650d?

Here is my flickr photostream:

* i always shoot RAW, in manual mode and mostly portraits, street and Landscape.
Any help would be really appriciated.

Canon EOS 7D or Nikon D7100

I am planning to upgrade my Canon 40D to a more advanced camera. 40D isn't bad at all but it doesn't come with video shooting features at all. I can save up to around $1K or a little bit more in a few months' time.
A friend of mine from Asia said that she could buy me a new 7D (grey market) for US$880 and bring it to me when she visits me some time early summer.

Then it's the new Nikon D7100 coming with a lot of interesting features.
Which one should I pick ?

I know lens would be an important consideration. For the time being, I mainly borrow my dad's canon lens. If I switch to the other brand, I can use my brother's lenses.

Will you pay $125,000 for Canon's Mixed Reality headset?

Look with what Canon fills their minds & hearts while we're expecting a better sensor, new firmware, better lenses... ...and better prices of course:

"Canon first introduced us to the concept of a Mixed Reality headset at its Expo in 2010. Now, the technology is going to be released for a whopping $125,000. The Canon Mixed Reality System—also known as MReal—will be available for big spenders on March 1st. On top of the device’s outrageous price, users will have to pay an additional $25,000 annual fee for maintenance.

The MReal is obviously not aimed at the average consumer. Instead, Canon is marketing it towards companies who want to create virtual prototypes to test user experience. Unveiled at an event at Manhattan's Classic Car Club, the MReal uses two cameras to send a video feed of the wearer’s surroundings to a pair of small monitors. This, combined with computer-generated graphics, creates a Mixed Reality experience.

The folks at Engadget have a hands-on with the MReal on their website. "

And now I'm thinking... they really realize what's going on in camera market?

600EX RT vs AlienBees

Which light system?

  • Canon 600EX RT

    Votes: 15 50.0%
  • Paul C. Buff AlienBees

    Votes: 15 50.0%

So I'm trying to decide what kind of lighting gear to buy in the near future. Currently, I shoot with a 430EX on-camera and some cheap manual flashes triggered wirelessly by radio, but I want to move into wireless TTL OR monolight strobes. I realize that each of these systems has advantages and disadvantages -- I feel that I would benefit from the advantages of both, but purchasing both systems is out of the question due to the cost. I would be shooting on-location portraits and weddings with this gear.

600EX RT advantages:
1) Built-in wireless transceiver
2) Portability
3) High-speed sync
4) ETTL

The main reason I would choose the Canon RT system over 3rd-party speedlites is point #1: no longer do I have to worry about charging dozens of batteries just to use two speedlites, or trying to figure out whether the problem is with my flash or the radio triggers when troubleshooting during a shoot -- everything is in one self-contained unit.

As for point #2: I can fit 2 or 3 of these speedlites in my bag with my camera... I don't have to worry about packing strobes in a separate bag.

Point #3: I'd like to do more shooting in bright sunlight. I'm using a 6D right now which has a terrible sync speed of 1/180 (I've shot at 1/200 with no problem without HSS but I would still prefer a higher sync) so HSS could prove to be a real advantage for me.

Point #4: I'd be able to hotshoe mount the speedlites and use them for bounce flash, which is something I already do pretty frequently with my 430EX. In addition, I might find that I like having wireless ETTL ratio control and use that instead of manual.

AlienBee advantages:
1) Power
2) Recycle time
3) Price
4) Modifiers

Point #1: You can never have enough flash power.

Point #2: Although I haven't had too much of an issue with speedlite recycle times, instant flash recycle times definitely won't hurt.

Point #3: For the price of just two 600EX RTs I could buy four ABs and a Vagabond. WTF is with that price, Canon?

Point #4: Really liking the Paul Buff modifiers. They're inexpensive and seem to work great with the ABs.

So what do you guys think? It looks like I spent a lot of time trying to justify going with the Canon system whereas the ABs are a no-brainer at the price point. Honestly, if I do go with the Canon system I am going to wait for them to release some RT slaves first so I would only have to buy one 600EX... 480EX RT anyone?

Wildlife shooting 5DIII vs. proposed 7D II

If the 7D II comes out with 24.1 megapixels, would a similarly cropped shot with a 5D III (containing a smaller number of larger pixels) have less noise when enlarged? Would it be sharper? I am considering getting the canon 400mm 2.8 IS II and wondered whether there would be any benefit to shooting with the proposed 7D II versus my 5D III. Any help would be appreciated.
