Weird ettl ec behavior - is this just me?

With daylight fill/bounce flash I'm mostly shooting Av mode with fixed iso 800-1250, min. shutter speed set (1/60s - 1/250s on my 60d) and a little negative flash ec to prevent overflashing the subject or positive flash ec because the diffuser eats too much light. I'm also often using camera ec to control the subject-background relation, so most of the time it's set between +1/3 and +1 to allow for a natural background.

The weird behavior I am experiencing: When changing *camera* ec a little from 0 to +-1/3 the background exposure changes a *lot*, while the following 1/3 steps are relatively minor - so on my 60d+600rt camera ec is not a constant, gradual scale. Is this just me, my camera or my flash? Is the flash exposure depending on the camera body used, or do all the ettl2 Canon cameras meter the same?

New Wide Angle Lens Ideas, please!

Here's my current lens list:

(body: 5DM3)

50mm f1.4
24-105 f4
70-200 f2.8 IS II USM

I'm realizing that I need a wider angle than 24mm (on the 24-105). I've dropped some nice coin into my body and lenses so far, so I'd like to stay under about $600 for a good 12mm+ (preferably to about 24mm) zoom lens. I figure that should set me up for a good range of lengths. Everything I've used has been Canon brand but I'm open to other brands if they work well. I used to borrow a Sigma 10-20mm for my crop sensor body, but I'd prefer to get something for FF and actually OWN it rather than count on my friend not needing it.

I do mainly portraiture, weddings and events.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Is your midrange gear insured?

I didn't quite know where to put this question, so it ended up in "lenses" since these are the most expensive items in the bag.

The motive for me thinking about insuring my gear is that I though someone has nicked my 70-300L out of my bag today - but back at home I gladly saw that I didn't take it with me in the first place as I usually do. So: My current gear (camera+lenses+flashes+filters+...) I'm carrying around is worth about €5000, and I'm going to add a 6d+24-70tc totaling about €8000. I bought this gear piece by piece, but somehow it's grown to (for my standard) considerable value, though it's far from the pro 1dx/5d3+f2.8-kits other people have.

Starting as of today I somehow feel that not insuring the stuff but carrying around the greater part of it most of the time is not exactly clever, on the other hand my budget is stretched as it is so I'm wondering if other people insure their "midrange" dslr gear against theft & damage or they consider the real world risk too low to pay for the insurance?

lens recommendation soccer

I was looking for advice on what lens camera combination to use:

subject: 11 yo soccer match (outdoor) . I will have moderate access to the field...that is I can likely stand along one sideline.

cameras: 6d (For which I do not have any focus issues in younger kid sports) or t2i
lenses:70-300 IS 4-5.6,
70-200 2.8 is Mk II

I assume that 6d plus 70-200 is better than 6d 70-300 because cropped I would still get a better picture. Therefore the main question would be is 6d + 70-200 better than t2i 70-300. I'm giving up a lot of reach for the IQ of the 6d 70-200.

Indoors the 6d 70-200 has been great for soccer and basketball.

Starting Lens Recommendation

Hello, I'm a student interested in photography. The reason I'm writing this is because I really need some advice on the lenses (my teacher uses Nikon only). I have Rebel T3i but I would like to have an ef lens rather than an ef-s lens because it'd be really nice to be able to share the lens with my fathers' film camera (eos 2000 i assume and it's lens is currently broken). My maximum budget is about $850 (i saved this for about 2 years, if you ask). I'm thinking about buying second hand gears at KEH.com as I live oversea and heard they have some good reputation.

So here are some lens I've looked up. They are about or under $850 second hand.
1. EF 24-105 f/4L IS USM
2. EF 17-40 f/4L + EF 50 f/1.8 II
3. EF 24 f/2.8 + EF 28-105 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM +EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM
4. EF 24 f/2.8 + EF 50 f/1.8 II + EF 100 f/2 USM

I know that 24mm isn't that wide on a crop camera but I'm fine with that. Please put some comments suggest which combo should i get. I really appreciate your help.

P.S. I'm currently living in Bangkok and will move to Seoul next year. So, I'd love to have lens that can be used for travel as well.

“A human being is only breath and shadow.” – Sophocles
This quote from Sophocles inspired me to shoot this short film.
It was a really nice experience to work with Canon C100. I pushed the ISO up to 4000
because i wanted to see how much noise will be generated.
Of course there is some grain in the picture but the low light ability of the Canon C100
is still amazing.
Working with the Compact Prime Lenses was uncomplicated. The Magnifier Button, which operates also during
recording is an amazing tool.
The form factor of the C100 is very handy and you are able to make your shots in a quick and comfortable way.

7D - Worth Buying ???

Want your advice on Canon 7d.

Currently I am having 600D and in future I have plans for full frame body [1DX if everything goes well ;D or at least 5d MK3 :)]
But in-between is it worth buying 7D if I am getting a good deal? Like if I sell my 600D and buy a new 7D then my effective investment for 7D will be less than $400.
Note: Main area of photography fashion/product + some event/indoor and occasional Wild life.

My doubts are like what are the things I will gain in 7D – other than
Better Focusing system [+++]
High FPS [++]
Great Build [ + ]

But will there be any diff in Image quality – or all of them use same type or sensor?
Actually I read somewhere that 600D sensor is slightly better than 7D.
+ BIG Concern --- WHAT ABOUT ISO PERFORMANCE --- I have seen in reviews that even at ISO 800 the performance is below par.
• ISO [--]

So is it of any value to but 7D or continue with 600D till I save money for Full Frame.
Actually I want to keep a good crop body for occasional Wild Life photography even I buy the Full Frame in future.

What if the rumored 5Dx is actually a 4D?

Hi, returning to CRs post a few days ago:

A new EOS-1 body in 2014

The latest we and others are hearing is that a large megapixel camera from Canon won’t be coming until 2014. This coincides with information that Canon would be releasing 3 DSLRs in 2013 and none of them outside of the APC-S segment.

Prototype cameras with sensors beyond 40mp do exist and are in the hands of very exclusive testers. However, we’re also told that a few lenses in the lineup will need updating before a large megapixel camera hits the market for Canon. No specific lens was mentioned, but I would imagine a full frame ultra wide zoom is one of those lenses.

From the same source as above, 4 new EF lenses will be coming in 2013.

Canon’s announcement date for a new EOS-1 may be dependant on when Nikon announces the rumoured 36mp D4x, Nikon cannot have two such cameras on the market while Canon remains quiet in my opinion.

EOS 5D X?

A faster update? One suggestion from a known source is that Canon has loose plans to replace and/or update the EOS 5D Mark III quicker than the previous iterations. Could we see one some time in 2014? I would think a direct replacement would be unlikely, however a small, high performance & higher megapixel DSLR would probably have a place in the market.

*Notice how I didn’t say “EOS-3D :)”

cr

as seen at
http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=12819.0

So, concerning the last paragraph of his part of the original post, what if the rumored high MP body is actually a 4D?
CR guy: - any additional thoughts? Is it likely to happen?

So the 5Ds could maintain a relatively "low" MP count within its segment as a higher priced allround cam. If my memory isn't too blurred, Canon kinda hinted that after the 5D3s announcement. Not sure what the original message was, but somewhere along the line, that they consider to stay at these MPs in relation to the feedback of some photographers. I would happily embrace such a decision. So a 4D could be the 1DX equivalent at high MP and DR. Well, time will tell. Cheers, Pedro

Speedlite ST-E2 v's ST-E3-RT

I'm trying my hand at flash photography at the moment and I'm looking to expand my flash gear range, I started looking at slave units such as the ST-E2 and ST-E3-RT. I have access to 2 x 580EX II units (one is mine, the other, from a friend) and a 5D m3.

Perhaps I'm having a blond moment here, but what's the (notable) difference between the two ST units? :)

I Have 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM, and i need to extend the zoom range
Is it worth buying 2x EF Extender III over a used 2x EF Extender II

I have read in reviews that Mk3 offers gud IQ vth IS2 lens (70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM) where I couldn't find any reviews of Mk3 attached on IS lens.

Body: 5D Mark III

Please provide your valuable suggestions.

Using two Canon EF 1.4X entenders

Does anyone here use two 1.4X extenders? If so, can you tape one set of pins and say focus at f8 on a canon ef 400 L f5.6?

Right now I use a 5d mk iii and I find it quite capable with the extender taped . I guess I am thinking, when the new firmware comes in the spring, can I feasibly have a 800 f8(f11 reality)? I understand that the image may degrade, and it will be slower, but I was wondering if anyone with 1d series has tried this?

Help for CS6 premiere pro with 5d footage

Hi, Im quite new to video editing so please help if you. I am using adobe cs6 on a windoes 7 64bit machiene. I have directly imported my 5dmkii footage into my project before and its been fine. I am trying to do so again, and out of 12 files, only 3 are importing, and the other 3 are giving an error saying 'header error'. I have read this is could be due to an non supported file type, but then why would it allow me to import 3 of them OK? I have transcoded the files or anything as I was under the impression you didnt need to with CS6. Please help :( Im trying to splice some footage together for a wedding montage for myself and im starting to get stressed :(

thanks in advance if you can help!

Around Inari, Finland

Last week, I was lucky enough to visit Northern Finland. It started off fairly mild at -5 C with snow, but then got progressively colder to -28.5 C on the last night. While I was there, there was a good display of the Northern Lights and I even managed to get a few landscapes.

Backup body for vacation

I'm going to South Africa on a 3-weeks vacation in November, about 50% wildlife and 50% landscape and other tourist stuff. As a backup and for extended reach I would like to pair my 5DIII with an aps-C/H body (my old 550D is most likely not up for it).

Since for me the 5DIII is more than adequate in all other respects, I don't want to invest too much money in this additional body, as I will sell it again and don't want to loose too much money in that progress, and I might purchase a 300 2.8 to go with it (for the 5DIII I've got the 70-200 2.8 II), and that lens costs quite a bit :(

At a local dealer there is a used 1DIII available for 1200 €, as well as a used 7D for 900 € (incl. grip), both not in perfect condition, but I'm confident that they are working well enough for my purposes.

The question now is which of the two is overall the better choice, considering fps, mp, iso, build, reach, af, etc.? Maybe somebody here has firsthand-knowledge of both of them and can help me decide :)

Or would it be better to get a 1DIV (or 7DII, if it arrives in time) and sell it afterwards? This would give the best body, for sure, but I'm afraid that having purchased it, I won't be able to part with it again, even if I don't need it, and I can't really afford this ;)

Marid Gras Photos (and photography restrictions in Trinidad)

Hi Mardi Gras is a big thing in Trinidad and Tobago - where I am from I have posted some highlights in this gallery:

http://www.wilmark.johnatty.com/c2k13

In Trinidad Mondays are quiet and most of the masqueraders dont come out in their full gear. Trinidadians like to think that they have what is most likely one of the most popular Carnivals in the world (it definitely is the biggest in the Caribbean). However there is a new challenge on the landscape for photographers - it is the biggest photography event in Trinidad and the government has copyrighted the entire event even making it risky to put carnival photos on Facebook, they want all photographers to pay a royalty fee of over 10,000TT$ (6.30 TT$ = 1.00 US$) for a 2 year license. Most of the photographic community has raised an alarm that it will destroy the art form and international interest in Trinidad Carnival. Personally I believe it is very shortsighted and I dont know of any situation similar to it anywhere in the world (where photos of a public event or art are seen as valuable and automatically assumes a copyright infringement of the artwork) . I have linked a few press/blog articles on this:

Canon Rumor’s Review of the Canon EF 40 f/2.8 STM

Justin has completed our review of Canon’s little 40 f/2.8 STM pancake lens.

People ask me all the time if it’s worth $200, and I say it is… even just for the fun of it. I especially like it on the EOS 6D just to reduce even more weight from a walkaround kit. Justin also liked the lens, though he doesn’t think he’ll be taking it to too many professional gigs.

Justin’s Conclusion

“Will a pro shooter get something out of this lens that they don’t on any of their other pieces of kit? Meh, probably not. But that’s missing the point, this lens isn’t FOR them. It’s for people who want a light kit, it’s for people who don’t have over a thousand dollars for a zoom lens. It’s for people who who just want to get started or to explore image making with something cheap, or help grow the small kit they already have. It’s for people who, already having pretty much everything, just need something new and unobtrusive to take with them, to give them a slightly different view and inspire some new work.”

More coming for Cinema EOS?

There have been numerous mentions of a camera coming in under the Canon EOS C100, an EOS C50 if you will. What could be removed from the EOS C100 to make another cinema EOS camera a lot cheaper? Currently a C100 costs about $6500, and we’ve been told numerous times that Canon thinks they’ll need a cheaper camera to get more people into the system and in turn, the upgrade path.

We’ve had two mentions of prototypes existing out in the wild, but no word yet as to whether or not they will become a consumer product.

For me, a dunce of a filmmaker. $6500 is too much money to spend just to show my family bad films on Vimeo. I’d really like a video camera that costs about half that with an EF mount. I could be in the minority on that one, but I much prefer to shoot video with a video camera as opposed to a DSLR.

DPReview: Canon EOS 6D Reviewed

From DPReview

The review of the Canon EOS 6D has been completed over at DPReview. They seem to be fairly positive about it, maybe less so than I am. I think the camera is great with terrific IQ. However, they did notice the same thing that I did, the battery drain with wifi and GPS turned on is quite significant, so be sure to buy an extra battery if you don’t have one.

I also don’t miss the autofocus system of the 5D Mark III when I’m using the EOS 6D, 95% of the time I find I don’t need anything beyond the center AF point. However, this point is personal preference and you may decide you need more cross-type AF points.

From DPR

“If you’re an EOS shooter eyeing the 6D as a more affordable alternative to the 5D Mark III, even as a second backup body, Canon has made your decision fairly straightforward. Still image quality aside, the concessions you’re forced to make for the significant cost savings are substantial. A slower burst rate, less sophisticated AF system with smaller coverage area, and moiré-prone video headline the list of compromises. And while we can understand Canon’s desire to keep the camera’s price down, other seemingly arbitrary decisions, like the inability to save HDR raw images and a DOF preview button whose location is much less useful than it could be, smack solely of product differentiation…..”
