Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 on full frame: it's actually quite good!

Not only does it work on full frame (as a 15-16mm f/2.8, unless you want a hard vignette in your image), but it is actually pretty sharp!

Check my tests here:
http://www.similaar.com/foto/lenstestsff/lenstestsa.html

My test chart is not huge, so with such a wide angle lens this is a very short focus test. In these conditions, it's not the sharpest lens in the test, but even in the extreme corners it is better, for example, than the Canon 24mm f/2.8, and similar to many other lenses, including my beloved 35mm f/2.8 (which I regard as a very sharp lens even in the corners).

Trouble is, a lens can be very sharp when focusing one foot away, but blurry when you focus at infinity. I'll have to test the Tokina in the field, but based on these results, I'm already quite impressed. If it keeps its sharpness when focused at infinity, this may be the best bang-for-buck 16mm f/2.8 prime you can buy for a full frame camera.

Potential upgrade from 7D

Hello everyone, recently I've been thinking about upgrading my 7D+15-85 to a 5DIII. The itch for upgrading has been nothing new, but recently I've found myself cringing at the images taken using the 7D+15-85 combo in low light when it is necessary to bump the ISO up to 3200/4000. I often times find myself wishing for a fast zoom lens/better high ISO performance when I'm taking pictures. Photography is a hobby for me, and I still hold a bit of doubt as to whether I should spend the money upgrading to a 5DIII since the 7D is an awesome camera, and the fact that I don't make money from photography.

I normally spend a lot of time looking up info and debating myself before I buy something, I spent a year "considering" before finally buying the 7D. The devil on my shoulder however, is pushing me to go for the 5DIII with a good lens. Thus for the past few weeks I've been browsing around and thinking about what focal lengths I would use more and which lenses I would most likely use. I've found two lenses that appeal to me a great deal (three lenses if I include the 24-70 f2.8LII).
The Canon 16-35mm f2.8L II and Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC

I know these two lenses aren't in the same class as to warrant a comparison, but when using the 15-85, many a times I found myself shooting from 15-35mm and then from 70-85mm, with less pictures taken with the focal length in between. Thus I thought that I would probably enjoy the ultra-wide angle of the 16-35mm at the expense of the versatility of the 24-70mm. However, it is also hard giving up on the Vibration Compensation of the Tamron lens as it often times proves useful in situations with lower shutter speeds. The 24-70mm f2.8LII is an awesome lens with a not so awesome price tag, not to mention it doesn't have IS so I'm willing to ponder a bit more whether I would like one.

I also own a Canon 70-200mm f4L IS and a Voigtlander Ultron 40mm F2 SLIIN, so my short telephoto range is covered and the Voigtlander is a fun walk-around lens to use when I want to strain my eyes and squint my brains out when focusing. So...

What do you guys and gals think about these two lenses with the 5DIII, has anyone used either often as a walk-around lens? Should I just stick with the 7D like my shoulder angel suggests? Thanks for giving me your opinions, and also thanks for spending your time reading through this. ;D

My next upgrade...

Hello all! It's been awhile. I've had my 7D for a year and a half now and I have gotten so much use out of it, still love using it.

On my list of things I "need" to get, there's the following:
  • 5D Mark 3
  • 16-35mm f/2.8
  • 24-70mm f/2.8
  • small compact for every day stuff, either a Panasonic LX-7 or the Sony RX100
  • A tripod that isn't cheap/broken like mine currently is

My compact panasonic died, and I had the luxury of borrowing a friend's RX100 that day. Holy moly, the pictures on the thing were incredible for a compact. It's almost irresistable to have my new "pocket" camera be something that good. However I had been looking to eventually replace my Panasonic with the LX7, another nice model. Tough choice. After the death of my compact I realized how much I had been using/relying on it for every day photos around where I work and such. I lug around my 7D and it's a beast and gets much better DoF than the compact cameras, but it isn't as versatile (juggling 3 lenses).

However my camera fund is now up again and I can afford a 5D Mark 3 now, though my top priority is getting rid of this 17-40 (the F4 is just extremely limiting since it's my indoor lens) and replacing it with the 16-35mm. I can actually get both, and I just got paid for some commercial shots I took of a farm which would add even more to the fund.

I could get both lenses, and the compact, and thus have an upgraded set-up in both areas to what I have now. Or I can add a second body in with the 5D3 and just get the 16-35 leaving some saving room to get the next lens and compact by summer. Getting the second body would mean having a really nice camera for portraits and something that does better with wide landscapes (something I struggle with currently). But then I'd ideally have both the 16-35 and the 24-70 in order for the dual camera set-up to work well. Come summer I'll have enough for all the things on my list (horse show season all spring = $$$ for me), but I'm prioritizing in the mean time.

The tripod I'm getting either way since mine broke. Recommendations for one again would be spectacular, looking to spend < $300.

Soo... suggestions?

6D flash sync problem? not reporting flash to body?

I was shooting my 6D today at the aviary. I believe I was in TV mode. Had my Canon 320EX speedlite on. I had been shooting with the flash off but turned it on. The shutter was set at 1/400th. The ISO was, I know, still set from the last room I was in, which was dark, so it is at ISO 3200.

Anyway, the camera failed to reduce the shutter to the camera's max sync speed (1/180) like you expect it to do. As a result, the flash was clearly out of sync with the shutter.

Also, the metadata says "flash did not fire". But obviously it did fire.

Could this be a firmware glitch? Bad camera? Some obvious user error I am overlooking?

Thanks.

600 rt set up question

Right now I have a 5D3 and several L glass lenses. I also have two 600 ex-rt lights with stands and umbrellas. I either need one more to control the others or the remote they made for it. The reviews on the remote were not te greatest because of the lack of low light focusing ability. I am thinking it may still work for me and it's cheaper than buying a 3rd flash. I could also decide to just get a few actual strobes, but they are so expensive and I hear you can do just as good with speedlights. Thoughts? Suggestions? I shoot events and weddings, but want to shoot models and boudoir as well.

70-200 F4 IS + 135L or 70-200 F2.8 IS

Hi Everyone
Sorry if this has been beaten to death already- I am planning on expanding my range beyond 24-105 and have considered a couple options.

I have the chance to pick up a 3 yr old mint but used 70-200 F4 IS from a work colleague. I can then add a 135L and get both lenses for under 2K combined.

OR I can spend around the same $$ on the superb 70-200 F2.8 IS. however I fear the size and weight might make me not want to use it that much. It is after all double the F4 version.

Anyone had a similar debate? I do like fast primes; shoot mostly family etc.

Look forward to ready your opinions!

ISO 50

I was just going through some EOS reading material and came across this regarding ISO 50 expansion ... "There will be approximately one less stop of DR in the highlights at ISO 50". So if I am reading this correctly ISO 50 is just empty night showing a "correct" exposure without any use ...

Is my understanding correct or am I missing something?

EOS Interface/Display

I have been wondering why Canon in its wisdom have not come up with a better user interface over the years especially with the units that have a high res (retina quality) display on the back of the camera. All of the text is just so large and clunky, given that the user is very close to the screen. You have to spend so much time dialing and figuring out which switch or know to use in combination with what. These displays have a very high resolution that can display text far more clearly than canon uses. Many of the cameras also have a joystick to navigate (pointing device).

The interfaces today are pretty much the same since the beginning of digital cameras. They have just become more crowded and jumbled due to features. It is surely an opening for Magic Lantern to exploit.

Request for Advice: 5D3 AF issues nightphotography

Hi,
My 5D3 is a great cam. Coming from the 30D I set its AF by suggestion of my brick and mortar dealer on the center AF point. In 90% of the cases it works great.
But compared to the 30Ds center AF point which was quite snappy even at very distant and dim light in moonless nights, the 5D3 AF is struggling a bit. Still being in my learning curve since August, what are the mistakes by my side while handling my gear.
AF on the moon: no problem.
AF on Jupiter: mostly no problem.
AF on some distant, dimmer light at full darkness...not always working.

Guess I've read about slight issues here, so thank you for any help
Cheers, Peter in Switzerland.

Q: 5d3 Autofocus squares in viewfinder - tracking

Situation: AF Case #6, erratic movement. AI Servo. 4- or 8-point expansion enabled.
AF/Meter start on the subject with centre AF point.

Subject (dogs at play, at great speed!) moves all over the field, I keep it within the 61 AF points and eventually I see a shot and press the shutter all the way. Despite the fact that the reticle display never moved from the original "lock on," the shot is properly focussed, though the subject is no longer "under" the original 5 points. The AF system seems to be "invisibly" tracking the subject and maintaining focus while confusing me (the operator) by displaying the point originally locked on rather than the current locked point.

Q: Is there a way to have the viewfinder AF display track and continuously display the active AF point in real-time, rather than "going out" soon after it locks on? I've tried the 4-point (preferred) and 8-point expansion modes. Zone AF is too much of a blunderbuss for my purposes. :)

I haven't spelunked all the Custom Functions yet, but my reading of the manual suggests that my expectations and intuition are wrong - that is, the viewfinder AF squares do NOT track the active AF point after locking on and until the shutter fires. I have it set in AF5 to display in modes 1,2,4. That is, everything but "always on 61point." It does indeed display, but doesn't move with the subject. YES, I am using Ai Servo and it seems to do more than the manual suggests (p103/104).

Is there any way to get the VF reticle to track this way? I'm just getting to know the camera (frame #241 today!) but my hit-rate today for focus was nearly 95% - way up on the 40-60% for my 30d under the same circumstances.

For the moment, I'm just using the centre AF point in 4-way expansion mode for focus acquisition, and the camera seems to track correctly over the other AF points despite still showing the "active" AF point as the centre. In playback, on the LCD, the red square is where it should be, and rarely the centre point :)

This is more of a confidence thing than anything else - I'm conditioned to expect poor tracking performance, so I want the 'crutch' of knowing where the camera is aiming for. Am I making sense? Thanks for any insights.

Flash/Speedite for 7D and 600D (Rebel T3i)

My wife and I are enthusiasts (in Australia) with a 7D and 600D and are considering our first speedlite purchase. We will get two so that we can have a macro and portrait set up with two flashes (operating wirelessly from the camera master control). We are considering getting two Canon 430 EX II, but could make one of them the 600 EX-RT if there was a compelling reason to spend h extra money. Comments/experiences sought.

Thanks in advance for your advice

EF200mm f1.8L vs EF200mm f2L IS vs EF300mm f2.8L IS II

I'm looking for an excellent lens for use in fast sports and portraits. I'm considering between these 3 lenses. It's really hard to find comparisons of these lenses let alone individual reviews. So I'm depending on the professional photographers here whom have used any of these lenses.

EF 200 mm F/1.8 L USM - used on Ebay - US$3200-4000 (but they look like they've been driven over by a truck)
EF 200mm f/2L IS USM - New on Amazon - $6000
EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM II - New on Amazon - $6800

There's about $2000 gap in prices in between these lenses. But price is not the deciding factor. I care about being able to use the lens wide open so it needs to be super sharp at the widest aperture. The IS is also not a big deal since I'll be shooting upwards of 1/200. I would like to use extenders (stacked if possible), how much loss in IQ is sacrificed for reach.

As of now I'm considering 200f1.8 but it's tough to find one in good condition. It seems practical in terms of range, 280mm F2.5 or 400mm F3.5 or 560mm F5.6 (stacked is doable). The images I've seen so far are just amazingly sharp and the bokeh is simply stunning. I can't reproduce it with my 70-200 f2.8 v2 even if I try my best.

What are your experiences with the any of the lenses? Which one is a more practical - range, portability, focusing speed, AI servo performance, Image quality at widest aperture, bokeh quality?

Thank you very much for your time,
Christian

After CES Whats Next for Canon?

<p>After a decided lack of exciting Canon DSLR announcements  at CES, the next big show coming up will be CP+ from January 31  – Feb 3 2013.  Canon and Nikon each have  huge spaces reserved for their exhibits at the Pacifico Yokohama, Japan exihibition hall and traditionally have made some major announcements at CP+.</p>
<p>Will the long awaited EF 200-400mm f/4 L finally be announced?  It was two years ago in 2011 at CP+ that Canon announced that lens development program, so what better place to announnce the lens formally.</p>
<p>Many are also thinking a 70D or the 7D Mark II is due.</p>
<p>We do not have any inside information or leaks at this point, so this is just pure speculation, but Canon is almost certain to announce some new products.</p>
<p>New lenses are the toughest products to predict, but recent new lens rumors beyond the 200-400mm f/4 L  might find fufillment at CP+ as well.</p>
<p>Expect  more to come and rumors will abound as the show gets near. If there is to be a major announcement, it should happen in the next 10 days.</p>

Canon: not responsible for typos?

Okay - off topic weirdness of the week.

In the latest Canon e-mail blast on Canon Live Learning seminars, the following disclaimer appears at the bottom of the e-mail:

Not responsible for typographical errors. Images and effects are simulated.

I just kind of shook my head at that vague, catchall psuedo-legalese. Reminds me of the stuff people put on e-mails about "delete all copies of this e-mail" if you arent the intended recipient. el oh el.

Lenses that I want based on existing patents....

All full frame pro lenses:

16-35mm f/2.8 IS - Based on the specs this should be even sharper than the existing 16-35mm f/2.8, but much more expensive.

http://nikonrumors.com/2013/01/09/nikon-patents-for-16-35mm-f2-8-vr-lens-dual-lens-hood.aspx/

135mm 1.8 IS - This lens would not be especially hard to manufacture and is in bad need of an update.

http://nikonrumors.com/2012/03/09/nikon-135mm-f1-8-lens-patent.aspx/

55-300mm f/2.8-f/4.0 IS - This particular way of making this lens has f/2.8 until 140mm!!, doubles as a 77-420mm f/4.0-f/5.6 with a 1.4 TC - 5 ED elements!!! If it were good it would be very exciting.

http://nikonrumors.com/2012/11/13/nikon-patent-for-a-55-300mm-f2-8-4-full-frame-lens.aspx/

50mm 1.2 which isn't soft like the current Canon version:

http://nikonrumors.com/2010/02/07/there-is-a-patent-for-a-new-nikon-af-s-nikkor-50mm-f1-2g-lens.aspx/

Yes I know these are all from Nikon Rumors, but I hope Canon is watching them and responds.

These would be profoundly amazing

Should I go with a 6D or a Mkii while they're cheap

Hey guys I've seen other threads about this but no updates really in a couple week with any new valuable information. So I'm currently shooting on a T2i of my own but often renting out either 5D mkii's or mkii's even now, (I'm an independent filmmaker) and I finally have the cash on hand to upgrade my own camera so I don't have to spend the money on rentals. If i had the money i'd be getting a mkiii but money is tight snd i shoot with sigma lenses so slong with upgrading my body i need to upgrade my glass as well. Now I know the mkii is a workforce and still capable of great things especially when I can pick up the 5Dv2 moire filter to eliminate that issue. But with the arrival of the 6D I'm kind of torn. I know that the moire on this is even worse but I'm worried if I pick up a mkii now while they're cheap, i could miss out on something great in the 6D with it having the new processor and even higher iso capabilities. Any thoughts?

Again if money wasn't an issue I know the mkiii would be the obvious Answer but 3500 clams is a lot when adding the cost of lenses and what not.

New Rebel T4i vs 60d/7D

I think I know what I'm going to do already, but I thought I'd ask some people that know what they're talking about. Sorry if this kind of topic is done to death here.

I currently own a Rebel XSi. It is long overdue for an upgrade. My dilemma is do I get another Rebel or do I bump things up a notch or 2 and get the next level up. So I started looking at a 60D or even the 7D. Which i think are the next levels up. But from my understanding these models have not been updated in awhile? Whereas I know the T4i was updated in the last year. I don't need the absolute latest newest, but I don't want to spend the extra money and get technology that is a couple years old either.

So definitely leaning towards the Rebel, but with my luck a new 60D or 7 D would come out the day after I get the Rebel. Lol I'm also going on vacation in 2 weeks and am not wanting to wait long for anything newer. So would the current 60D be a better purchase than the T4i now?

I'm a very amateur amateur. I'm really using the camera for fun. Travel pictures etc. at this point a 5D3 isn't even a wish for my purposes. I just want a basic "good" camera. Any input would be appreciated.
