Inside the Canon EOS-1D C

<p><strong>Is it different from the EOS-1D X?

</strong>We had a chance to peer inside the EOS-1D C (No photos allowed) to find out how much it differed from the EOS-1D X. The differences are minimal, the biggest change is the heat sink inside the camera to keep the sensor circuitry cool during 4K video operation.</p>
<p><strong>Firmware

</strong>The EOS-1D X has some traces of the EOS-1D C firmware code and the features are locked. We don’t know how much of the firmware is the same.</p>
<p><strong>Third Party Firmware?

</strong>I was told by someone at Canon that they would “bring the might of its legal team” to anyone that attempts to modify at the software level, the features of an EOS-1 camera body. So I think the firmware community out there today will probably leave the EOS-1D X alone.</p>
<p>More to come on this topic I’m sure. I am hopeful that someone provides pictures of the inside of the EOS-1D C in direct comparison to the EOS-1D X.</p>
<p><strong>Why does it cost so much more?

</strong>Production of the EOS-1D C is going to be a lot less than even the limited production EOS-1D X. Especially when you compare the numbers to the 5D Mark III or a Rebel. The software development will also add a lot of cost to the camera. How much bigger their margin is on the EOS-1D C over the EOS-1D X? I have no official word on that, but I’d love to hear about it.</p>

Sell 24-105mm f/4L and buy either TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II or 85mm f/1.2L II

Really two topics.
I don't have to sell the zoom to get the other lenses I just don't think I use it a lot.

I have the 16-35mm f/2.8L II and 70-200mm f/2.8L II IS and that make three zooms that cover a huge range and are weather sealed.
I am a bit afraid if I sell it I will want it again someday even though right now it is little used.

I do have two nice primes, 50mm f/1.2L and 35mm f/1.4L and ready to buy either the 85mm f/1.2L II or the TS-E f/3.5L II.
I have a realy nice RRS TVC-34L Tripod + BH-55 Pro Ballhead with bottom plate and L bracket for the 5D Mk III, so with or without grip I am covered with the tripod for TS use.

I've always wanted a TS or PC or whatever the manufacturer of the time my gear was calling them, and I know lot's of you have and like them. Also I will eventually get the other one that I do not have after the upcoming purchase.

I am leaning towards the TS-E right now but when I look at the images online from the 85, I really like that bokeh too.

Anyone with hands-on experience with the PIXMA PRO-100

I'm interested in getting a printer for my photographs. I had narrowed it down to the Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II but found that it was discontinued. There are hundreds for sale but I'm not interested in buying something that they may stop selling ink for. The pixma pro-100 was listed as the successor. Anyone have one and can provide their thoughts on it? Thanks.

Conventionally, large aperture lenses for 300mm F2.8 have been loved by professional users due to their brilliant capability of depiction and bright aperture value. It has established a solid standpoint in the world of photography. Based on the concept that turning a 300mm F2.8 lens into zoom lens would enable photographers to expand the scope of shooting, we have developed 120-300mm F2.8 lenses and released them into the market. It is not simple to decide on a composition with a 300mm lens. Especially for sports and theatrical shows, shooting positions are almost always fixed and changing lenses could lead to missed photographs. By adding a zoom function with the large aperture 300mm F2.8 lens, it no longer requires other interchangeable lenses and rotation of the zoom ring will offer excellent framing. In other words, when conditions are difficult, this high-performance lens gives you more scope to express yourself in the shots you take.</p>

<strong>[Special Features]</strong>

1. Sports line lenses deliver high action-capture performance

Sigma is organizing all its interchangeable lenses into three product lines; Contemporary, Art and Sports. While offering sophisticated optical performance and expressiveness, our Sports line lenses deliver high action-capture performance, enabling photographers to get exactly the shots they want. With their high-level optical performance and expressive power, these lenses can capture fast-moving subjects, even at distance. This high-performance line also offers a variety of functions to aid the photographer in challenging conditions and scenarios. The SIGMA 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM is the first product from the “Sports” line. Besides sports photography, the lenses are also perfect for nature shots featuring birds, wild animals and other wildlife, and for capture of aircraft, trains, racing cars and more. Another major feature of our Sports line lenses is their wide range of customization functions: using the software provided, all sorts of settings can be tailored to the personal preferences of the photographer.</p>
<p><strong>2. Dust-proof and splash-proof construction</strong>

For professional purposes, we have achieved excellent durability by incorporating dust-proof and splash-proof parts for joint parts, such as mount attachment, manual ring, zoom-ring, switches for customization and external switch panels. It prevents dust and dirt from entering the lens. Also, the usage of the zoom ring and focus ring is well positioned for shooting situations.</p>
<p><strong>3. High image quality close to fixed focal length lens.</strong>

This lens incorporates 2 FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have performance equal to fluorite, 1 SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element, and compensate for the color aberration at the utmost. The design also compensates for sagittal coma flare and minimizes the blurring of a point light source in peripheral areas. It offers very high image quality, close to fixed focal length lens.</p>
<p><strong>4. Incorporation of focus limiter</strong>

Excellent usability is achieved by incorporating inner focusing and zooming that requires no change in the length of the lens for focus and zoom. It is possible to use with a rounded filter, such as a Circular Polarizer, as the front part of the lens is fixed. Due to the focus limiter offering adjustable range of auto focusing, this lens can provide fast focus setting. The USB dock enables users to change the range of the auto focusing at the discretion of users’ creativity.</p>
<p><strong>5. Newly developed “USB DOCK” exclusively for new product lines</strong>

Based on these new lines, we have developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus. In addition, the lenses from our Sports line have customizable AF speed, focus limiter and OS function. The “Custom Mode Switch” is the device for further customization on the dedicated lenses.</p>
<p><strong>6. Ease of use</strong>

Many parts of this lens have been designed for comfortable usage. For example, the design of the zoom ring is concerned with a texture when you hold it, the position of printed letters and the 4 control switches with integration-considered shape of the screws. Included accessories such as the removable lens hood and the newly designed tripod collar with strap ensure added ease of use.</p>
<hr />
<p><strong>[Other Features]</strong>

<strong>•  Flare and ghosting conscious design</strong>

SIGMA’s Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting. It provides sharp and high contrast images throughout the entire zoom range.</p>
<p><strong>• Excellent in handheld photography for telephoto shooting</strong>

This lens incorporates the OS system which offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible, ensuring the excellent use in handheld photography for telephoto shooting. The OS system has two modes – OS mode 1 is suitable for general photography, and OS mode 2 is best for panning shots of subjects such as planes or racing cars. It is possible to adjust the OS using the optional USB DOCK.

* This lens cannot be used with film SLR cameras with the exception of the Nikon F6, Canon EOS-1v.</p>
<p><strong>• Quiet and Fast AF</strong>

The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures high speed and quiet AF as well as full-time manual focus override by rotation of the focus ring. With the enhanced AF algorithm, smoother AF is achieved. The full time manual, which offers further adjustment after focusing with AF mode, is possible. By using USB Dock, you can change and adjust the AF speed at your convenience.</p>
<p><strong>• Incorporating Rounded Diaphragm</strong>

The 9 blade-rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image.</p>
<p><strong>• APO Tele-Converter (Optional)</strong>

The addition of Sigma’s 1.4x EX DG APO or 2x EX DG APO TELE CONVERTER produces a 168-420mm F4 AF telephoto zoom lens or a 240-600mm F5.6 AF telephoto zoom lens respectively.</p>
<p><strong>• Brass made bayonet mount</strong>

This lens incorporates a brass made bayonet mount which has both high accuracy and durability. A special treatment to reinforce its strength is applied to the surface giving it greater strength and making it highly resistant to long-term use.</p>
<p><strong>• Evaluation with Sigma’s own MTF measuring system “A1”</strong>

We used to measure lens performance with an MTF measuring system using conventional sensors. However, we’ve now developed our own proprietary MTF (modulation transfer function) measuring system (A1) using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. Even previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of our quality control inspections. The SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM will all be checked using this “A1” before they are shipped.</p>
<p><strong>• “Made in Japan”</strong>

All Sigma’s manufacturing – right down to the molds and parts – is carried out under an integrated production system, entirely in Japan. We are now one of the very few manufacturers whose products are solely “made in Japan”. We like to think our products are somehow imbued with the essence of our homeland, blessed as it is with clean air and water, and focused, hard-working people. We pride ourselves on the authentic quality of Sigma products, born of a marriage between highly attuned expertise and intelligent, advanced technology. Our sophisticated products have satisfied professionals and lovers of photography all over the world, because our manufacturing is based on genuine craftsmanship, underpinned by the passion and pride of our experts.</p>

<p><strong>Special Features</strong></p>
<p><strong>1. Contemporary line can handle all sorts of photo opportunities</strong></p>
<p>Sigma is organizing all its interchangeable lenses into three product lines; Contemporary, Art and Sports. Featuring the very latest technology, and combining optical performance with compactness, the Contemporary line covers a wide range of needs. Incorporating the very latest technology in these lenses, Sigma has solved the difficult problem of keeping size and weight low without compromising optical performance. The SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM is the first product from the Contemporary line. Featuring a wide zoom range, the lens has a focal range equivalent to 25.5-105mm on a 35mm lens.</p>
<p><strong>2. Excellent for macro photography</strong></p>
<p>This lens’ minimum focusing distance is 22cm and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:2.8. At 70mm, the working distance becomes 5.52cm. When it comes to telephoto, it can shoot pictures with a similar sensation to a macro lens. Also, without the need to change the lens, it enables photographers to take a close up pictures of subjects such as jewelry and flowers. In order to secure a clear field of view, the design of this lens is very thorough, even down to the precise position of the engraved letters on the lens.</p>
<p><strong>3. 30% Smaller Than Conventional Models</strong></p>
<p>For a which is used lens used in everyday situations, the small size makes a big difference. By incorporating a smaller OS unit and optimizing the structure and power distribution of optical elements, the lens barrel has now become more compact. In order to ensure high accuracy of the product, the new compound material TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), which has high affinity to metal parts, is introduced for the lens barrel. It results in better durability of the parts and smaller zoom rings and scale rings. The dimension of this lens is 30% smaller than our conventional models.</p>
<p><strong>4. Superior Image Quality Throughout The Entire Zoom Range</strong></p>
<p>This lens incorporates 2 FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have performance equal to fluorite, 1 SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element and 3 aspherical glass lenses including double sided aspherical lens. By optimizing the power alignment of the lens, both chromatic aberration of magnification and axial chromatic aberration have been corrected. From infinity to macro, it achieves superior image quality through entire zoom range. This lens offers extraordinary expressive power and is capable of surpassing the requirement of the rigorous checking process of our new MTF measuring system “A1”.</p>
<p><strong>5. Large maximum aperture of F2.8</strong></p>
<p>The aperture value is F2.8 at the wide end (17mm), and is F4 at the telephoto end (70mm). The bright viewfinder aids focusing and composition of images. The fast apertures also offer useful functions such as fast shutter speeds to prevent an object from being blurred and ensuring a smooth bokeh in the background.</p>
<p><strong>Other Features</strong></p>
<p><strong>• Optical Stabilizer</strong></p>
<p>Sigma’s own unique OS (Optical Stabilizer) function is incorporated. It offers effective correction of approximately 4 stops, which makes it possible to compensate for camera shake even in macro range photography where a small blur can be easily identified.</p>
<p>*1. The closer the lens is to the object, the less effective the OS function is.</p>
<p>*2. For Sony and Pentax, OS function is not incorporated.</p>
<p>• Flare and ghosting conscious design</p>
<p>In order to achieve high rendering on this flagship lens, flare and ghosting were thoroughly measured from an early stage to establish an optical design which is resistant to strong incident light such as backlight. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions.</p>
<p><strong>• Incorporating Rounded Diaphragm</strong></p>
<p>The 7 blade-rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image.</p>
<p><strong>• Hyper Sonic Motor</strong></p>

<p><strong>• Ease of use</strong></p>
<p>The new product lines incorporate rubber for the attachment part of the provided lens hood. For better usability, the design of the lens cap and AF / MF changeover switch has been improved.</p>
<p><strong>• Newly developed “USB DOCK” exclusively for new product lines</strong></p>
<p>Based on these new lines, we have developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus.</p>

Canon 6D(N) available?

On the cover page of the 6D users manual it is mentioned there are two versions of the Canon 6D (WG and N version) body.

" The Canon 6D(N) does not have the Wi-Fi and GPS explained in this document."

Since I don't care about Wi-Fi nor GPS (or even video for that matter) I'm very much interested in the pricing difference between these two models. Has anyone seen the 6D(N) in stores yet?

6D wifi app autofocus not working

I manage to connect to remote shooting my 6D using android.

But when I press the smaller button of the two button.. It does nothing. I expect it to autofocus,
i tried holding it but still it does nothing. I tried using different android phones, but still the same.

Did I miss any setting? or my 6D may have fault?

I want to check forum before I send it to service center.

Spotted Owlets

These were sighted on Sunday morning during my birding walk. Due to insufficient light shot with ISO 6400 and was very unhappy. On Monday morning I set up my 60D with EF100-400 L IS USM on a Manfrotto and cable release. For 20 minutes of exhilaration. The results......................

The AF Setting Guide Book for 5DM3 and 1DX

A trip to the Irvine service center today produced a good conversation with one of the tech reps. In short, I do quite a bit of BIF shooting (birds in flight) and focusing is a challenge when you have 6 cases in the 5DM3 menu (and 1DX) to choose from. I've read some articles that explain to be the holy grail in AF settings for BIFS but I have found them so-so. The service center had recommended this link which I thought to share with AI Servo users

http://learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2012/1dx_guidebook.shtml

scroll down a bit and check out the PDF file for an in depth 48 page tutorial on AF for either of these two cameras. Hope this helps some of you...Rev

Reikan FoCal Pro with 40 STM

Hello everyone,

I just started using the Mac beta of FoCal with my 6D. It worked swimmingly with my 70-200mm f/4L IS, and after 4 or 5 tries with my 50mm f/1.4.

However, with my 40mm STM, it has not worked at all. The COF during the focus consistency check is 97.1%. The analysis is all over the place though.

Has anyone got a 40STM to work properly with FoCal? If so, did you have to do anything special to get it to work?

January 8th Lens release rumor... a dud or a ruse?

For those of you still waiting for the Jan 8 rumored major EF lens releases based on the CR post, good luck…For the rest, ie, the sane and the disappointed…let’s face it …there ain’t gonna be no 35L II or 14-24L that’s about to be released imminently.

The CR post that got a lot of mileage and bazillion clicks here for CR, was a big dud… and hopefully was not a willful ruse by Canon or its panderers.

If it was a willful ruse, then it moved the focus from Sigma 35 to the purported "imminent” release of Canon's version of 35L II. It kept folks like us participating and clicking kazillion times on this site acting like the release is imminent, it has to be cuz, hey, it has been on the waiting list for so long...

As for some who think they are getting this 50mm whatever.... *chuckle*.

Jan 8th is here and I don’t think ANY major EF lens of any consequence is coming... (No, can't count the 200-400 1.4X which is a ~2 year old promise yet to be handled by the regular folks with multiple announcements and delays). This is a lame lame game that has been played before with the never coming 100-400L. String people along.

As it was a CR1, may be it is ok to say almost anything perhaps? One has to wonder how CR ranks these so called “sources” with bad track records when they come up in future with an equally lame whopper. Hope the CR guy calls this "CR1" source on this and says..."look f**kwad...what was this you said about two..."maybe" three lenses coming'?" ...and not put up anything from this source in future? …would CR post it anyway cuz …let’s face it… its slow going some months?

Instead of blaming Canon, perhaps one has to recognize the pathetic lameness in relying on games played by venues like this....then posting our “deep thoughts” (scoff!) like "I want my next lens to be gold plated and doing a jig" kinda msges...it says more about us...yes me included.

Ok…I’ll get off my soapbox! :P

Canon 1D X - HDR First frame always shaky

I have taken a series of HDR shots today using my 1D X and 24-105L lens. I have also used a tripod and the camera is set to auto bracketing (5 exposures). In just about every series of shots the very first picture has camera shake and the other 4 exposures are sharp. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem before and if it is possibly the Image Stabalizing motor causing the shake? What is strange is that it is for instance a 3 sec exposure that is shaky but the longer exposures are perfect... This is very confusing!

6d vs. 5d mkiii for sports photography

Has anyone tried the new 6d on indoor basketball, or something that is going to push the AF system? I've got a 50d and simply can't get the shutter speeds needed to freeze the action at the local indoor gyms. I'm looking at the either the 5d mkiii or the 6d. Not sure about the focus tracking of the 6d, but all tests look like it does better in low light situations. I've googled around on the internet and can't find too much on the 6d based on indoor sports shooting. If anyone on here uses the 6d for indoor sports, I'd be very interested to hear what you had to say or could point me to some places that focus reviews based on that. Thanks!

Canon 6D Automatic Lens Correction

Hi There

My understanding is that the 6D (along with the other newer EOS Bodies) automatically corrects for CA and vignetting caused by the attached Canon lens as per the loaded lens profile.

My question is whether this correction is applied to the RAW files or not? I have begun shooting RAW when I got my 6D, and could see a defnitive correction when processing the RAW file in camera. I also assume that this correction will be applied when using canon DPP (didn't test). However, I use Aperture 3, and was wondering if Aperture 3 applies this correction automatically or not as I am seeing some vignetting that I do not see in the JPEG. Is there a specific step I have to follow in Aperture 3 for this to be applied?

Thanks in advance

300 f2.8 Ser 1 vs. Ser 2?

All,
There's a used 300mm f2.8L Series 1 available used in my local area for $1200. What were the sharpness improvements in the Ser 2 that I will be giving up? The price seems almost too good. I am planning to get together with the owner carrying my laptop and 5D's for a real-time test of the image sharpness. But Since I already have an OK 300mm f4L (admittedly a pretty old lens, too) I have to feel that selling that and paying another $500-600 for the f2.8 is worth it.

I have no regular work that demands the f2.8 speed right now, but I have had assignments where the extra stop would have been a benefit. However, except for the wow factor of the lens' appearance, no client here on my kinda out-of-the-way Hawaii island would have knowingly paid me a dime more for what I would have delivered for that extra stop, now that I think of it... <grin>

I do have the excellent 70-200 ser2 and a sharp shot at 200 can be enlarged a bit... Hmmm, I seem to be talking myself out of a bid on the 300f2.8.

(My next purchase was to be the Sigma 35mm f1.4, arguably filling a bigger hole in the glass I have.)

Aloha All,

Canon 7D Mark II - Far Eastern Speculation

Ever experienced horse racing in Hong Kong?..... those in the Far East love a gamble and it even extends to the release of cameras - in this case the replacement 7D Mark II. I read a new post on which-canon-camera.com which says that Impress Magazine predict the release to be at 85% probability. Impress being based in Tokyo perhaps have a higher chance than most of getting it right. Lets hope the upgrade extends beyond fps and megapixels as that is all becoming boring.
