Leica Summicron-R 50mm f/2

I got this lens a month ago at a bargain price, but still haven't found the time to use it properly.
Today I took about 20 photos (portraits and some car shots). Compared to the Zeiss Planar 50 1.4, I find the image quality of this Leica more pleasing for portraits (softer contrast and better bokeh).
Unfortunately the human model I shot doesn't want his images on the Net, so I can only show you the car photo :D
I'll try to update this topic with some more interesting photos in the future!

Canon 400d, ISO 100, f/2, 1/500.

If you have this lens, please post your thoughts about it! Photos would be great too!

Got this here itch

I'm ectlectic in my images, everything from BIF to landscapes to macro...anything but people. Currently use a 1DsIII and, am a believer in photoshop.

The new 7D is about to be released with the expected upgrades and about 22MP, which is impressive for a crop camera. Photomerge takes care of needing more stuff in frame.
And, the new "D", or whatever they call it, supposedly will have around 40 MP and a slower frame rate. Frame rate is inconsequential and like cropability of excessive MP for macro work.
I will not buy two cameras, couldn't afford that route. any suggestions?

Canon Announces The PowerShot N

<div name="googleone_share_1" style="position:relative;z-index:5;float: right; /*margin: 70px 0 0 0;*/ top:70px; right:120px; width:0;"><g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2013/01/canon-announces-the-powershot-n/"></g:plusone></div><div style="float: right; margin:0 0 70px 70px;"><a href="https://twitter.com/share" class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" data-url="http://www.canonrumors.com/2013/01/canon-announces-the-powershot-n/">Tweet</a></div>
<p><strong>London, UK, 7 January 2013</strong>– Canon today unveils the PowerShot N- a totally new type of camera that offers a different approach to capturing creative, spontaneous photos and sharing them instantly with social networks. The unconventional square design, innovative zoom and shoot operation lens rings and tilting touch screen encourage people to capture their world from a fresh angle, whilst the new Creative Shot mode automatically generates a selection of unexpected creative treatments with every shot taken. The perfect smartphone companion, the PowerShot N has been designed to simplify image sharing with intuitive Wi-Fi connectivity allowing a new generation of high-quality, artistic images and Full HD videos to be shared in near real-time1.</p>
<p><strong>Inject every shot with artistic flair

</strong>Thanks to the new Creative Shot mode, anyone can impress their friends and followers with unique, creative images that offer a different perspective on a typical scene or subject. When an image is captured in Creative Shot mode, the PowerShot N intelligently analyses the scene and determines which of a host of creative elements could enhance the scene or offer a different creative angle. Multiple variables including composition, exposure, point of focus, white balance, gradation and contrast are considered before five alternative versions of the original shot are automatically generated, which can then be shared at the touch of a button.</p>
<p>Alternatively, a creative edge can be added to a single shot with Canon’s creative modes, including Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Toy Camera Effect and Monochrome. Users can also add drama to a movie clip with Super Slow Motion Movie mode.</p>
<p>Combining creative flexibility with point-and-shoot ease of use, the PowerShot N features new Hybrid Auto mode which records the four seconds before every shot in 720p resolution, before using Canon’s acclaimed Smart Auto technology to determine the best settings to capture the perfect shot. At the end of each day, the four-second clips are merged into one to tell the “behind-the-scenes” story of the day’s images – perfect for adding new context to an online album.</p>
<p><strong>Shoot and share in an instant

</strong>Making it the ultimate mobile companion, the PowerShot N features integrated Wi-Fi and one-touch connectivity to smartphones or tablets, thanks to the Mobile Device Connect Button. Users can upload images or movies to social networks such as Facebook ® and YouTube™ just moments after they’ve been captured, no matter where they may be. Once home, the best shots can be printed wirelessly or transferred to a PC thanks to the swift, reliable connection. The GPS via mobile feature, using the free Canon smartphone app, can also add location information from a GPS-enabled smartphone or tablet to an image, allowing users to share the exact location of their fun with friends.</p>
<div id="attachment_12563" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 585px"><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/PowerShotN-3.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12563" alt="Canon PowerShot N" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/PowerShotN-3-575x431.jpg" width="575" height="431" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Canon PowerShot N</p></div>
<p><strong>Revolutionary design, ‘Any Way Up’ operation

</strong>The unusual, eye-catching design of the PowerShot N sets this model apart from every other – just like the images it captures. The compact, symmetrical design, tilting touch screen and an innovative system of lens rings – the twist lens ring can be turned in either direction to operate the zoom function, while a second ring is used as the shutter release – allow the camera to be used any way up, even upside-down, unleashing the ability to view the world from a completely different perspective.</p>
<p>The advanced capacitive 7.1 cm (2.8″) touch screen also allows users to control essential functions, such as focus or the shutter, with a simple touch, and review their images with familiar, intuitive gestures. Available in white or black, the square, metal body is dominated by a 28mm, 8x optical zoom lens, making it easy to shoot groups and landscapes. Thanks to Canon’s advanced ZoomPlus technology, which provides detailed, full-resolution shooting with up to 16x zoom, users can also get even closer to the action or frame a subject tightly for compositions with impact.</p>
<p>Measuring just 78.6 x 60.2 x 29.3 mm when the screen and lens are closed, the PowerShot N’s extremely compact dimensions allow it to be slipped into any pocket and carried anywhere, so scenes, subjects and situations that might usually be missed can now be immortalised in the superb quality offered by Canon’s advanced compact imaging technology. USB charging also provides added convenience, allowing the camera to be charged quickly and easily on the move.</p>
<p><strong>Canon signature image quality

</strong>Despite its compact size, the PowerShot N inherits much of Canon’s latest imaging technology to deliver superior, Canon-quality images and movies. Combining a high-sensitivity 12.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor and an advanced DIGIC 5 image processor, the HS System featured in this camera supports a maximum ISO of 6400 to produce sharp and clear images in challenging low-light conditions.</p>
<p>The powerful 8x optical zoom lens is supported by Intelligent IS, which automatically applies the most appropriate image stabilisation for smooth video and crisp stills. Complementing the artistic still images, Full HD video (1080p) can also be recorded.</p>

How well suited is the Rokinon (cine) 35mm for stills? (Disguised lens advice)

Hello everyone,

First post here, even though I visit the the site and forum daily. But there comes a time where one just need some specific advice, as I haven't found an answer to my questions.
My parents gave me a canon 6d for my masters graduation (I'm still humbled by there generosity!), which was a big step up from my 400d. Full frame, I love it :). Besides that I own a 50mm 1.8 and a Tamron 28-75 2.8.
The work I have planned for my set is the basis of my unanswered inquiry. For I plan to use both still and video mode at the same level.
Together with 2 friends I own an online webshop for premium menswear (www.huntingensemble.com). All productshots shall come from my 6d. But we'll also use it to make our own video's; short but highly edited clips that represent the coming collection. Beside our webshop I’ll be trying to make video’s in any shape of form (musicvideo, company video’s, etc.) and want to delve deeper in portrait photography.

Long story, but here's my crux. I sort of fell I love with the images of the Rokinon 35mm. Tack sharp with, for me, great color and contrast. And, most importantly, at my max price rang. 600 euro's for me is the ultra maximum.
However, it lacks AF. And I just don't know how that'll affect our productshoots. I just don't have enough experience with studioshoots and even less with MF only lenses. From my own rationality I deducted that lack of AF in our current studio setting may not be so big a disaster as I first thought. Though time is of the essence, because we have tons of items to shoot, I will only be standing from two designated distances from the model (one for upperbody shots and for full body shots). My question is, with an aperture of around f6 is it possible to just keep two focuspoints in check when I and the model keep the exact same distance (marked by tape on the ground)?
My second question: how does the declicked aperture ring affect still shooting? It has obvious advantages for video work, but does it influence still shooting in a negative way? Because if it does not, I would tend to favor the cine version.
My third question: does anyone perhaps have an other solution for my situation? The reason why I like the Rokinon is because it’s a perfect video lens. Smooth and large focusring with enough room to focus. I find that my Tamron and especially my Canon 50mm are just not smooth enough to work with. The new Sigma 35mm also looks great but is too expensive. The 50mm 1.4 isn’t strong enough when shooting video. I don’t want to work with a zoom as I already have the Tamron, I just really like the optics of a prime.
Well, my apologies for the not so brief post , but any advice is appreciated ;)!

Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II travel bag for Alaska

My plan is a trip to Alaska (bears and scenery), first time since I visited nearly 40 years ago. Any tips on a decent travel bag for a Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II that will be allowed in an aircraft cabin. Also any advice on the best local travel agents for a trip of this type, best choice of lenses to take, best hotels in Anchorage and any other advice or suggestions that will make the trip easy and enjoyable. I am not looking at a budget trip nor a super expensive one, but I can afford to pay for decent comfort.

TS-E lens

So I just got contracted to do some exterior/interior photography work for a local outfit to fill out their portfolio (custom home builder). Most of these homes are on very steep (in the Lake Tahoe area) hills and after doing a preliminary walk around a few properties I noticed that my fisheye will not fit this job very well for the exterior shots like it has in the past.

I have never used a TS-E lens and was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on if this would be a prudent investment or a few online tutorials. I have searched around online and had little luck with finding anything tutorial related.

Thanks!

Want 400mm reach (FF) - 70-200 2.8 IS II + 2x III or 400 5.6L?

Hi folks,

I have the excellent 70-200 mm f/2.8 IS II and the TC 1.4x III - which I love, paired to my 5D mark III.

I recently shot some cricket matches, and I think I need more reach than the 280mm available with the 1.4x, and without the bulk (I'm an amateur, and there seem to be restrictions on many games where non-accredited photogs cannot take in big lenses).

I think 400mm would be about right (based on some rough crops of the 280mm), but can't afford the big guns (400mm f/2.8L IS).

The games I would photograph would either take place in bright daylight or under broadcast-standard lighting (1000 lux).

Looking at what's available, the only affordable lens is the EF 400mm f/5.6L. It does seem to be very old, and has no IS.

An alternative is to acquire the TC 2x III - which would give me the same aperture, and add IS with a more modern lens formula / AF combo.

Does anyone have any experience with the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II with the TC 2x III that they would like to share?

Cheers

2003 vs 2013 17-40/4L

Hi everybody!

I have just - I guess - simple question. Do you think that for example Canon 17-40/4L, which is (if I have right information) for 10 years on the market - will be still same? I mean if you like to compare lens made in 2003 and lens made in 2013 - would they still perform same (IQ)? I am just thinking, that even the lens is for a long time on the market, that company still have to inovate and using new components. So the lenses, even the old ones, should be changing in their performance.

What do you think? Thx.

24-70 or 24-105

Recently bought myself a 6D, stepped out a few days later and picked up a 16-35mm, I held off the 24-xx lens as I'm unsure what I really want or need. So I've a 16-35, a 50 (f1.4), a 135L and a 70-300 non L

I like the idea of IS and reach on the 24-105, but can't help but feel I'd get buyers remorse if I got that over the 24-70, so struggling and coming to the conclusion that I'd like to have both... But which first, would the step from 24-105 to a 24-70 be so small I'd get buyers remorse, would a reverse of this make me feel I'd got more in the IS & 71-105 extra reach ?

Help !!!!

1 ds mark3 vs 5d mark 3 image quality

Hey,

Im thinking about changing my trusty old 1ds3 for 5d3. Im not a pro, so I shoot mostly for my fun, but I do love photography and printing large. I mostly shoot landscape, portraits, events and other stuff as well.

I would like to upgrade, as I miss the iso in the 1ds3 and it does get quite heavy carrying around all day :)
Also the technology on the 1ds3 is already a bit dated ...(hate the low res screen) ...
If someone has both cameras, can you please compare the image quality and any pros and cons for the cameras.
Maybe for IQ, weather sealing(used the 1 this weekend in pouring rain), print quality, high iso, af,...

Thanks.

B+W UV filter XS Pro broken by Canon 17-40L lens cap

Hello,

I read some discussions about UV / clear filters for the 17-40L and wanted to share my experience.

I recently purchased 5DIII + 17-40L + B+W Filter UV (010) XS Pro Digital MRC Nano D77mm.

Yes, though it's a slim filter you CAN still attach the original Canon lens cap provided with the 17-40L. But the lens cap does NOT fit completely. The front thread is not deep enough.

So there was a problem : the DSLR is stocked all day in a top loader bag, pointing down. And there was a pressure on the lens cap due to body + lens weight. 3 days ago, I found the filter completely broken. And I could CLEARLY see that the starting point of the broken zone is on the border where the lens cap pushed...

Now, I'll buy a F-Pro mount...

Just to share my experience...

Cheers,

Lens mount play

My new 5D3 has a bit of play in its lens mount. Regardless of lens, once fully mounted you can move the lens slightly left and right while on the body. This doesn't appear to affect performance in any way, but the loose tolerance seems strange to me. I then checked my year-old T3i with a similar group of lenses and found that it too has a bit of play, although it seems to be a bit less.

Is this considered normal? Has anyone else noticed this with their bodies?

If my 5D3's mount needs tightening, I'd like to get it done while it's still under warranty. But it says a lot about QC if Canon is letting these things out the door with loose mounts. Can anyone else chime in on their mount(s), so I'll know if my situation is an anomaly? Thanks.

To keep or not to keep (60D)... that is the question

Hello everyone

Like some of you I have been fortunate enough to move up to full frame very recently (5D Mkiii), and have not even touched my 60D for a couple of weeks. Originally I had thought of keeping it as a "back up" since it does take nice pictures... but really loving the 5Diii so much I can't imagine any scenario where I would use the 60D really.

I guess it's kind of like having a Corvette in the garage AND then getting a Ferrari... not sure I'd be jumping in the 'vette any time soon even though it's a nice car. (I dont have either of these though lol)

I guess my question is, what are most of you finding when you make such a jump? I could understand if I had a 5Dc or 5Dii, or even a 7D for the autofocus... but I don't need the "reach" of APS-C, my main reason for upgrading was DOF/ISO performance/Low Light etc...

So are many of you selling your old camera's while they may still have value? or do you think you will use them again down the road? I am not a pro... my kids are too small to use cameras for ohhhhhh 12 or 13 more years... and my wife refuses to learn DSLR ;)

thanks!

EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x --- Brief hands-on review

I went to the Canon event @ Cathay Orchard Cineleisure (Singapore) today in order to have a look at the 200-400 F4L IS USM 1.4x and was not disappointed.

With exception of the 200 F2L IS all of Canon’s current long whites were lined up nicely with an 1DX attached on tripods with gimbal heads so that I could easily compare all of them side-by-side despite the huge crowd.

I did totally disregard the 6D, the EOS M, the 24-70L II, the cine cams and lenses and all other gadgets I am not interested in and went straight to the biggest swarm of people surrounding the 200-400L.

The 200-400L was definitely the star of the event and most difficult to put my sweaty hands on. Thanks to the Wimberley the handling of the lens was very easy despite its considerably large size. The build quality is top notch and the AF snappy, accurate and lightning fast not only in center AF mode (=as great as on all current whites).

Manual focusing works well and the zoom ring operates smoothly although much slower than the one on the 70-200 F2.8L IS II. Zooming on a lens with such a huge diameter feels a bit odd but I am sure this is just the case because it is totally new to me. I just hope that zooming will be as easy when handholding the lens which unfortunately was not possible at the event.

IQ and bokeh are amazing (at least on the screen of the 1DX; the card doors were taped over on all cams so that I could not snatch any card).

Switching between 1.0x and 1.4x using the inbuilt TC works very well (of course the use of the TC costs you one stop), the locking mode is almost superfluous since the switch does not flip on its own and will hardly be flipped by mistake. The design as seen in the pics is supposed to be the final design. According to the Canon rep only the internal design is still not final but very close to.

He told me that the 200-400 would be commercially available in S’pore by the end of 2Q2013. He was not supposed to comment on the price tag and did not show any reaction to any of the price ranges I was throwing at him.

Here comes the surprise: According to the rep the lens will only weigh slightly more than 2kg (which should be pretty much in line with the 300 2.8L IS USM II). Therefore the lens will be handholdable and can be carried around all day without getting a sore back/arm. Hence my expectation towards the price is that it will cost at least as much as the 600 F4L IS II due to the huge amount of fluorite used to bring down the weight so much.

The Canon rep did not know anything about 800L and 200L updates nor about any upcoming DO super teles.

Verdict: If I would not own the 300 F2.8L IS II I would not be able to sleep tonight and when I would finally be able to sleep again in a couple of days I would definitely dream about the new addition to Canon’s white line-up…

P.S.: Please excuse the poor quality of the pics, I snapped them secretly when the Canon reps’ eagle eyes were for a short moment not watching me closely. I just switched my RX100 on without checking/adjusting the settings/mode dial.
P.P.S.: The black AF points on the 1DX do really suck!
