3rd party/generic ink for Canon Pixma Pro9000 MK II

I been using the Canon Pixma Pro9000 MK II for about 1.5 years now and never thought of using generic ink such as the ones listed in the link below. What are your experiences and thoughts on it? I know the rule of always using the printer manufacturer's branded ink, but at $15-$17/cartridge, it racks up alot of money quick. Thinking about buying these ink cartridges since you save alot more money and even if the printer breaks down, it would easily be replaced for about $150-200 for a new printer. Thoughts?

What photo/video gear did Santa bring you this year?

I asked the same question last year so figured why not make it an annual thing? List isn't as long as last year, but it was still a good year:

I got a 600EX-RT, my first flash and I'm looking forward to experimenting with it.
And my Blackmagic Design camera is supposed to turn up tomorrow hopefully, super pumped about that.

Do other lenses compete with the "look" of L primes?

I know that there are countless reviews across the internet comparing sharpness, resolution, IQ at different aperture settings, flare control, etc, but I feel that in spite of any amount of numbers, it's the overall look and feel of the image that convinces me.

I'm a portrait photographer on and off the clock, so I'm going to be shooting f/2.0 and below all the time unless it's a large group of people. I could care less if a lens is 2x sharper at 2.8 than it is at 1.4 because the look of that wide aperture sets an image apart more than a little sharpness in my opinion and style.

Ultimately I know this is a matter of personal preference, but I'm really looking for opinions from those of you who have used both cheap and expensive lenses and can vouch for that "look" that Canon glass is famous for. My wife and I are about to make a huge purchase for our business and upgrade a lot of equipment, and I'd like to know if some of those fancy lenses are unmatched in their feel for portraiture of if I can save some money initially by sticking with the cheaper options.

Does the 85L shot at f/1.8 stand out from the lesser 85 at f/1.8? If any of you have started using the Sigma 35mm f/1.4, does it compete with the contrast and OOF effect of Canon's 35mm?

So far I've always loved the look of Canon's lenses, but comparisons like these make me think I can save hundreds of dollars and still have the look I'm going for:

<strong>Camera Lens 18-70 f/2.8-6

</strong>A patent has shown up for a lens that is an 18-70 f/2.8-6. It looks like the lens could possibly be for a fixed lens APS-C camera. The <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/838600-REG/Canon_G1X_PowerShot_G1_X_Digital.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">PowerShot G1X</a>, while a cool enough camera, didn’t catch on. Canon may not be done exploring a large sensor fixed lens camera.</p>
<p>Personally, I’d be more into a <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/891105-REG/Sony_dscrx1_DSC_RX1_Full_Frame_Point.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296" target="_blank">Sony RX1</a> style camera for a few dollars less.</p>
<p>As a side note, the G1X was announced last year for CES, and that’s coming up in January.</p>

Which extension tubes to buy?

Anyone have suggestions? I'm thinking extension tubes would be better for me than a dedicated macro simply because I don't foresee myself doing a lot of macro, and figure id be more inclined to throw a tube or two in the bag than actually a separate lens. Open to anything really, but ideally something that also offers electronic contacts etc. Also if you think a used macro is just a better bet overall let me know

EOY perspective: Past cameras you miss the most

Just thinkin', on a cool Christmas morning.... After reading the "progression of cameras" thread, I got a little wistful for past hardware, wished I still had it.

My top three

1. Nikkormat FT2 with 50/2.0 Nikkor - my first good quality SLR, and I had it for years, took a lot of great pictures with it. It was all I had, one body, one lens, so I learned to make do with what I had, and it taught me to see better, be more creative, take more photographic chances.

2. Not on my "progression" list through oversight, but I had a little Rollei 35 with the Zeiss Tessar. Just a fun camera. Had a little meter battery powered meter built in, made in Germany, black... pseudo James Bond stuff. And the imaging was VERY good... amazingly good in fact.

3. Nikonos III with the 35/2.5 W-Nikkor. I loved that lens. The camera was good, with limited shutter speeds and such, but the lens was fantastic. One of the most detailed photographs I ever took was of a local hospital building, on Panatomic-X film, under-rated by about a stop and a half. That picture really defined "detail" on the 35mm format. I took it with a Nikon S2, with a 35/2.5 W-Nikkor. Take that lens, put some more modern and decent coatings on it (improving it!), and you had the standard lens for the Nikonos.

And runner up - either of the Canon A-1's I owned. Canon's entry into the digital age, first 35 SLR with "program" mode, also had 5fps drive and a nice little grip that could be detached. Most of the FD lenses were "ok", but I never really liked their color rendition compared to the Nikkors of the day... I still liked all my FD system and abused it well, and it never let me down.

anger at 1 dx review on professional photographer magazine

So i bought professional photographer magazine here in the uk and there is a review from professional photographer mark rawlings. Now i am going to get straight to it he mention's 3 times his annoyance at having to press a button then the controller to move af point's 3 times he mentions this at its one of his major gripes with the camera!a simple custom function fix!so i contacted him on twitter and let him know how to fix it and my disgust twitter name (rawlimark) and his reply to me " i didn't go into custom functions as didn't have the space to,idea was to talk about design and using it out of the box.otherwise a review would read like an instruction manual which would be pretty boring read".
this is absolute rubbish he took time to mention 3 times his annoyance at it he just had to write a simple custom function fix.anyway if you guys feel the same get in touch with him on twitter.
rant over.
merry xmas :-)

Sigma 35mm 1.4

I haven't read this thread,I just jumped to the last page, one point I wanted to mention is that the sigma is not weather sealed,But the new 35mm L will almost certainly be weather sealed.. I have the sigma lens and it's excellent but I would prefer weather sealing.. and for this reason I will sell it when the new L is released..

BTW build quality is pretty good and it feels quite heavy.. focus ring is nice and smooth too, although not quite Zeiss Bild quality..

Which Powershot or IXUS

I want a pocket camera but with some control. My heart was set on an EOS M, but I've a C100 to buy, so keeping cash for that instead.

Still got space in my life for a carry about camera, and space in my pocket and wallet.

Don't want an S or a G, as I would rather just go that bit further and get the M, however the IXUS 310hs and Powershot sx220 hs are coming up as good value, decent specc'd capable enough pocket cameras with a bit of control.

Also strike me as exceptional value for money, which might even get better in the sales in a couple of days.

Anybody used either model (note the IXUS 310hs is the eu name) or the 230 (220 with GPS - don't need)

This is really just a camera to have with me, in the pocket, in the glove box, but with enough of a manual input to keep me happy. Not breaking the bank, not expecting miracles.

Happy Christmas if thats your thing, Happy New Year if thats your calender, and all the best anyway if not.

Zeikos Lp-e6 battery does not work with canon charger that came with 6d

I knew I saw a battery thread, but couldn't find it.

The Zeikos battery came with my 6d package. I tried charging it with the canon charger when I first opened it. It was blinking slow for 20 seconds, then started to blink fast. I charged it for a about 4 hours just to see if it worked. The battery lasted for only 50 shots. Then tried to charge it again for a few hours. After a few hours of charging, it didn't work.

I contacted Beach Camera, they sent me a new one real quick. The same thing happened.

After reading a few threads, I found that aftermarket batteries and canon chargers don't mingle well.

So I bought a cheap Opteka charger on amazon just to see if it can charge the Zeikos battery. It did, and now I can use it on the 6d.

Hope this helps anyone with same issue.

Workaround for Loose Lens Cap on 8-15mm Fisheye

I've heard about the loose-ness of the 8-15mm Fisheye lens cap and found a quick solution to the problem as I was opening my newly arrived lens today.

There's a scratch-resistant paper on the lens between the front element and the lens cap. This is how Canon packaged it so I'm assuming it's pretty safe for the protruding front lens element. If you keep that paper on before putting the lens cap back on and storing it, the lens cap stays on with much more grip and is not as easy to bump off.

I've seen posts regarding this before but couldn't find any specific to this topic. I remember reading about someone who actually thought to super glue the hood and lens cap together. Although not perfect, I think the paper in between is a slightly more elegant solution. Hope this helps someone else.

<p><strong>From Untitled Film Works

</strong>Check out some of the work being done using the Canon EOS 1D C, the motion image results are pretty astonishing.</p>
<p><strong>The art of motion image</strong>

<em>“The art and skill of a photographer is still required when using a camera like the 1DC. Understanding and harnessing of light, composition and interaction with your subjects are all vital skills of a photographer and are not replaced by the idea of motion image capture. Photographers also use a variety of techniques to obtain unique looking images (like long exposure times and the use of remote flashes) these times of images would not be reproduced in video. I see the biggest step forward using motion image capture the ability to record many individual moments in time, all the while silently as there is no shutter being released. This could have great benefits in situations where you may want to remain more candid. Subjects could also feel more relaxed not knowing “photographs” are being taken.”</em></p>

6D Bg-E13 Discrepancies

I'm looking everywhere to figure out where the "multi-controller" and M.FN button are on the Canon 6D.

The official Canon Product Page at http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_6d#SuppliesAndAccessories: says that they're present on the grip:

Battery Grip BGE13

This large capacity battery grip is powered by two Battery Pack LP-E6 (one pack or two), six AA-size/LR6 batteries or an optional AC Adapter Kit ACK-E6. It features a variety of operating controls such as shutter button, Main Dial, AF point selection button, AE lock/FE lock button, AF start button, multi-controller, and multi-function button. This is ideal for high volume and easy vertical shooting.

What is the "multi-controller" and where is it located? Where is the M.FN button?

The image on Canon's site doesn't show the back of the grip. On the new review posted at The digital Picture, the grip seems to be missing the multi-controller, and doesn't show the M.FN button anywhere.

New Lens Purchase Dilemma

Merry Christmas everyone...

So Ive sort of narrowed down my next lens choice but kinda of wanted to get some feedback on the following. If you had 1K to spend which would you choose? I do really want to do macro stuff but could probably live without true 1.1. Other primary function would be indoor shots of my son and wife. Here is options below as I figure all would be about the same cost. I tend to use the long end of my 24-105 when shooting.

100L F/2.8 IS + LR4 (Rocking LR3 right now)
135L F/2 + Set of Extension Tubes
100 F/2.8 USM + 85mm F1.8 + 40mm F.28

Thanks..

New lenses for 46mp camera?

Please help if anyone knows the answer. When the big megapixel canon (presumed to be 46 mp) comes out, will canon need to produce new lenses to take advantage of the sensor? Zeiss is making a high end set of primes for 30mp+ cameras. I have read that canon is planning to update some of their lenses for this camera, but you know how these rumors go.

Canon sent me an opinion survey

If this topic has already been posted, please forgive me. (I am not a frequent poster on this site).

Last week I got an opinion survey from Canon emailed to me and I am just curious how many other people got it? For those who think Canon do not pay attention to you, this is your chance to make your opinion known. I had recently registered a new lens, so maybe they send it everytime someone registers? Or maybe it is a random thing?

Anyway, after clicking the various boxes about how you use various products, the last question was "What one lens would you like to see Canon build?" I know A LOT of people on this forum would love to tell Canon. The one I put is probably not exciting to most of you, but I answered 80-300 constant f/4 (internal zoom). The lens I was using was pretty close to this - a Sigma 100-300 f/4 and I loved it. Sadly the autofocus stopped working and since it is out of production Sigma says it cannot be fixed.
