Color Management for Online Photos

I am looking for some help with managing colors on photos I post online. My photos are basically all of landscapes and when I post them to some online competitions the colors look horrible and muddy. I have a calibrated monitor and my prints turn out well for the most part, but I don't know what to do to make sure the colors look right when they are posted online.

Any tips? Thanks in advance.

It’s not coming soon

There are plans to release an EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS sometime in the next 18 months. I have confirmed from two sources that the end of 2013 or early 2014 is the earliest we’d see a production model announced.

There are no plans for a non-IS 24-70 f/4L.

Real world use of 6D, WiFi and iPhone for shooting

Decided to do a bit of experimenting with my new 6D and the EOS app on an iPhone 5. I set my camera up on a tripod out by the bird feeder then came inside to try to get some shots of some birds feeding.

Caveat, I'm not one for reading instructions first so I jumped in assuming I would figure it out.

It seemed to me that the live view on my phone sometimes would freeze so I had to go with what I was seeing outside vs. what was on my phone. It also seemed that when I took a picture, using the app, the camera might have spent time sending the picture back to the camera or thinking because, again, the view on the phone would freeze for a while so it was hard to tell if the camera was actually taking pictures every time I pushed the button (turns out it was). Oh, one more thing, there is no audio cue or sound to let you know that you have actually taken a picture so sometimes I would push the button multiple times trying to make sure I don't miss a shot only to find out later I took 5 pictures.

I will be playing with this feature more as time goes on. Will report back if I learn something I missed.

The seemingly amazing Sigma 35

I have the 35L and I love it. Despite its age it seems to deliver the goods and is sharp wide open.

By all accounts the Sigma betters it in most regards, including on price. I have no immediate plans to replace my 35L with the Sigma as in reality there is always going to be a 'better' lens out there somewhere. The idea of selling of L to get Sigma does seem slightly skew to me too.

Am I alone in this thinking or is this an opportunity to maybe pocket $1-200 on the side and land a 'superior' product, at least until the 35L ii arrives (which will likely be still much more expensive).

Thoughts?

UPGRADING 7D to FF Please help!!!

Hello there,

I have originally purchased the 7D back in 2010 and now I feel like it's time to upgrade to a FF
because I feel limited buy the 7D performance.

Currently, there are three FF bodies that seems to be in my range. The 5d mk iii / 6d / 5d mk ii
However I would like some professional feedback from those who actually make income and works in
this industry.

Therefore coming from the 7D, it seems that I will personally have a dreadful time and
be unhappy with the autofocus system that the 6d and 5d mk ii offers. The reason I'm still debating whether or not to purchase the 5d mk iii is because I also want to invest on glass so it would be a plus if I could spend
more on that. Will the 5d mk iii autofocus system and iso capabilities alone be worth purchasing it over the other two models? Or will I be marginally satisfied by the image results compared to the 7d although compensating
the AF system of the 6d and 5d mk ii.

I'm trying to work in the industry of wedding and portrait photography mainly but on the side fashion and would
also like some professional opinion on lens choices. The new 24-70 seems to be without a doubt a great
decision to go with the 5d mk iii with the versatility of zoom range but I'm trying to go primes because I also
want to be more creative when and with limited zoom capabilities having to move and pre-visualize before a photoshoot. More leaning towards the 24 f/1.4L or 28 f/1.8 || 50f/1.4 || 85 f/1.8
I understand this may have been already discussed in another thread but from other professional photographers that I've talked with, seem to say that the 50 1.2 and 85 1.2 AF just isn't good and heavy for a long period of time and that they preferred the 1.8 even though it's what around 1.2 stops down.

The current glass that I have are EF-S 10-22 || EF-S 15-85 || 50 1.8 || EF 70-200 2.8 IS II
Would greatly appreciated for opinions and feedbacks.

Thanks in advance! ;D

Cheers

Need some advice- shooting at Staples Center

Hey all, as you can see from my post count, I'm pretty much a lurker 'round here. I'm a hobbyist with modest gear, and my daughters dance company has invited me to shoot their performance tonight @ Staples Center (they're performing during half time at tonight's Clippers game) I'll have floor access @ half court and Im not sure what gear to go with as I'll only have a couple minutes to get set before they start.

Here's what I have to work with:
T1i
50m 1.8
17-40F4L
24-105F4L

Im thinking about just mounting up the 24-105 and calling it a day, but I'm thinking the 50m aperture may come in handy.... any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks all

Best Third Party BG-E6 Battery Grip For Canon 5D MkII?

I recently got a Canon 5D MKII, I just sent it back to Amazon to get a new one because of the price difference now. For some reason, when I called to see if I could get $270 off my purchase, they said send your camera in and order a new one, we will refund you the $1,799. I told them it would be much easier to just deduct the $270 and that way they would not get a used camera back, I've only had it for six days but still it isn't in box, and have to resale it as used. Anyways the important thing is that during my first photo shoot with the camera, it did not feel natural to me because of the lack of a battery grip, I usually shoot with a Canon T1i gripped. I would like to buy a battery grip for the 5D but Canons is just way to much, I'm not looking to spend more then about $70 on a grip. I was wondering what grip you guys would recommend. I've seen stuff about having to remove the battery grip every time you put in the batteries and stuff about plastic gears breaking on the grip and them getting stuck on the body. I would like to know is it really necessary to remove the grip every time you put in the batteries, I've never done that on my T1i and it works perfectly. Also when looking at many of the grips for the 5D, I have seen that they dont have rubber on the back which to me seems like something that would be very annoying. So CanonRumors, what do you think is the best grip for your money?

5D2 for a day after 5D3 for 6 months

The 5D2 I loved for so long was in my hands for a day from its current owner after using the 5D3 for the last 6 months.

Thinking back of all the hype and hot discussions on features, I'm left with a very clear understanding what I missed most about the 5D3 - or rather, its greatest benefits for me:

1. Programmable DOF (Switching between servo and one-shot) on RIGHT hand side - I was shocked at how crippled I felt with the 5D2
2. Much more flexible auto ISO in manual mode - really could not use it at all due to its range limitation
3. 6400+++ ISO noise. Wow wow.

Its really amazing how quickly we adapt to new tools, and how difficult it is to go back to what was recently as comfortable as your fav slippers / jeans / etc... very happy to be back in my new old comfy zone.

Anyone have similar experience?

Advice on inexpensive underwater system

I am looking for a decent underwater system and could use advice in what to choose. The following is what I am looking for.
 • I do not plan to take underwater photos very often - mainly on vacation.
 • I do not need a high depth rating. The vast majority of my photos will be in the pool and snorkeling.
 • I am interested in taking photos where part is above water and part is underwater
 • My budget is not very high. I did look into a sport housing for my 5D3 but that was running about $3k. I would really like to keep my budget for the underwater part under $1k
 • My current thought is to buy a compact camera and put it in a housing. The housings for these cameras are much less expensive
 • I have high standards on image quality. I have an X10 and that is about the minimum in terms of quality that I can tolerate. I imagine though that underwater I would have to use it at an unacceptable ISO
 • If I buy a new camera for this, it would be nice if the camera is usable above ground too

I will greatly appreciate any recommendations.

Hand on SONY RX 1.............AMAZING

I was playing with Sony RX 1 yesterday at local camera store….all I can say is WOW.

The IQ is amazing - normal light, low light, super low light no problem. At higher ISO 6400ish the images look REALLY-REALLY good. It looks cleaner than my 5D III @ f2.8 lens

AF speed is quite fast. I didn’t have any problem focus in low light. The lens feel solid. You touch it, you know its high quality lens.

The chassis is very well made. It feels very solid. This is no plastic stuff…

To me, this Sony RX 1 has great potentials for many uses. The only thing that pulling me back from buying is fixed lens, but I still can see myself travel with this camera very well

I thought I would share.

necessity of photography school

A few photography school related questions.

for those who went to school, do you feel like you learned a great amount, or was it more of a business decision to have a diploma.

And from 1 to 10, where would you say you were at before and then after 1 = not knowing you can take off the lens on a slr. 10 = Neuroanatomist

And lastly, could you have learned the same from the internet and experienced friends?

Edit- I do consider photography a form of art and when I said learn, I meant more than just the tech aspect.

I feel like a kid again....

As one grows up, the excitement of Christmas diminishes... you know what your getting (socks) and it's focus drifts away from the presents and more towards spending time with your family and friends...

But this year... this year.... i can not wait for Christmas morning!!!!! I feel like a 10 year old kid eagerly anticipating the nintendo shaped box under the tree... Why am i so excited this year?... well let me tell you! While finding a hiding spot for my wifes present at home (macbook air), i was rummaging at the back of the guest room closet to see if there was space there, i found a 5d mkiii kit!!!! :D soooo.... it is there, 15ft from where i sleep.... and i can't touch it until the morning of the 25th! Hence the excitement... I just hope she charges the battery for me! :)

Anyway, this has no real relevance to anyone, but since i don't have many photo-buddies (recently moved to india) here so i needed to share... now i need to act all nonchalant so my wife doesn't find out...

I hope you all have a great Christmas season and a happy new year... :)

6D & 24-105 f/4; AF point works as well with f/4 lens as f/2.8?

Is there any loss of, well, anything, in the AF function of a 6D when using a lens with max aperture of f/4, vs. its performance with f/2.8 or wider/faster lens?

I have seen here and there that certain AF points (center usually) do things at f/2.8 or better that the point can't do with wider lenses?

Relevant at all with 6D and 24-105 f/4???

Thanks!

CPS - REPAIR

Just wondering on the COST focus repair in that the Limiter on the 70- 200 MK II now only works at 2m instead of 1.2m as well. don't know how/when it happened nothing is physically wrong with lens but this limits HEAD shots etc.. Tried moving the switch back and forth and the basics seemly. Maybe its a pin in the lens to body contact area but it also fails on on other cameras so it is the Lens.

Now how much COST if any of you have had experience with a repair in this realm the lens is 2+ years old warranty i think is gone. and its my go-to lens for most things complementing my other go-to the 24 mkII.

thank you all keep posting your answers please.

YATT: Yet another Tripod Thread

So, I've randomly come into $250 AMEX gift card I could use on my regular, random expenses...or I could blow it on something I actually probably really should get since I do want to try out some timelapse, long exposure, basic macro, so I thought Tripod! Now, I understand $250 is probably about the minimum for a good set of legs, and then I need a head, but I'm fine going up to $350-400 total. So, what do you recommend? Right now I have 5d3, and the heaviest lens I've got is probably the 24-105 or 135L. I am planning on getting the Tamron 24-70 and Canon 70-200L 2.8 IS v2 eventually.

So, something reasonably lightweight so I can take it with me on hikes (doesn't need to be ultra-light, I can handle some extra weight for a few miles), but is pretty stable and can take the 20-700 and my 5d3 and be pretty stable. And of course a fairly nice head. Doesn't have to be really fancy, but something dependable and would work well for my current use cases.
