One friend want to Buy my 24-70L... but...

Hi Everyone!

Background: I have 17-40L, 24-70L, 135L and 70-300L, yesterday pulled the trigger with the 35L... so its on the way...

BUT... yesterday a friend of mine wants to buy me my 24-70L... I am tempted, it will be another step into the "all prime lens" way. I'm tempted to save for the 85L... honestly the 24-70 is a nice lens, but it don't have WOW factor that the 135L have.

Its something that I want to do... sell it... but first I really wanted to "Try" a wedding or an event with only primes, so Im kind of nervous to sell it and later miss it... for the moment will be 35L - 135L, and 17-40 for the wide shots...

Someone has done this exchange? ???

Renting EF 500mm f4L IS MkII for birthday vacation

For my 50th birthday, my wife(and business partner) is taking us to the Southwest US to play and shoot photos. She rented us a couple 500mm MkII's for the trip. As you know from my collection at the bottom of my profile, we shoot with good old 300mm f4L IS's and the 500's are gonna be a giant and exciting leap forward for us. Can you offer any advice for us? We've got insurance, durable tripods etc. but more like field advice. We're wildlife shooters and any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanx everyone.

5D III - CF card or speed issue...

Hi guys,

hope somebody could help me to solve one problem:
When purchased my 5D III I tried in video mode and I could write with 1920 x 30 fp and 1280 x 60 fps accordingly, as it should be. Now I have a headache: I used CF Sandisk 32 with 60 Mb/s and tried to take movie: it was only 1920 x 25 fps and 1280 x 50 fps... Ok, I thought, the speed wasn't enough - and purchased me a Sandisk Pro with 90 Mb/s. Same result...( I have checked then with SDHC card (class 10, the quickest I could find) - still the same. And now I worry, what did I wrong or maybe there is something to do with other settings??? As I mentioned, one time it was ok, but then I tried many times to reach the above "normal" fps - but with no success... Does anybody has any ideas???
Thanks!!!

Guesses on lenses for Photoplus

We'll know this for sure within a few days (hours?) but I thought I would take a stab at what lenses they'll announce.

Most likely
35mm 1.4 II - priced somewhere between $1700-$2100
200-400/1.4x - priced at $10k

Possibilities
TS-E 90 II - magnification near .5x, similar updates to other TS lenses, priced at $2100
TS-E 45 II - similar updates to other TS lenses, priced at $2100
400/5.6 II - much sharper. Has new gen IS. Priced at $2300.
300/4 II - much sharper, takes extenders better. Has new gen IS. Priced at $2300

Unlikely
100-400 II - no more push/pull, much sharper and faster. Priced at $3000.
135/2 II - Priced at $1900.
MP-E 65 II - Significantly better optics, maybe increased magnification. Priced at $2300.

Not happening
14-24 - Maybe an "in development" announcement, which means 2014

Nikon's new 70-200mm f/4 VR rated 5-stops

I've been looking forward to this lens and hope it performs well and handles better than the very sticky manual focus on their f/2.8 v2.
Also hope it doesn't have the focus-breathing issue. I want my 200mm to be 200mm at close focus.

If this thing can perform at least as well as Canon's f/4 IS then I have one more mainstream zoom in my Nik-kit.

Price for the tripod ring is nuts! but so is Canon's.

Not long to wait.

I've just been browsing a UK photographic supplier that gives a release date for the Canon 6D of 20th November. Which is different than "early December.

http://www.fotosense.co.uk/canon-eos-6d-digital-slr-24-105mm-lens.html?fo_c=83&fo_k=6656cc9c261cb4da41ef03f882a4d19a&fo_s=webgains&source=webgains&siteid=10691

Looks like we'll be getting those reviews and comparisons sooner rather than later (always assuming the above date is correct)!

85mm f1.2L II and 40mm f2.8 focus by wire

Hello, just a simple question, about the focus by wire. If I got it right, it means that you can only manual focus the lens when the camera is powered and metering, right ?

So it means that as soon as the metering goes off, you can't focus manually any more until you half press the shutter again?

Do you know any other lens than the 85mm 1.2L (II) and the 40mm f2.8, who share the same focus by wire mode ?

I was about to buy the 40mm but this is an absolute NO GO for me, since I use manual focusing a lot. Any information would help....

What is white balance and what's the correct way to use it?

After purchasing a non-mfg lens, I've noticed that a lot of my photos have become warmer. I kind of preferred the cool blue color of my kit lens but it's not too bothersome. I've noticed that my camera has something called wb shift/bkrt option. After playing around with the menu, I'm still a bit confused about white balance in general.

What is the correct white balance for photos? Like what's natural and unnatural looking. How can you determine if the whites are truely white and the colors are really the colors that are actually the real colors? And does white balance really matter if I'm shooting raw since corrections on PP are available?

600EX-RT and third party gels

After reading through the manual of the 600EX-RT, it appears that the flash only is able to transmit colour temperature information if the gels supplied with the unit are used. - The procedure described by the manual indicates that manual white balance setting would have to used with other gels.

I was wondering if anyone has experimented with using 3rd party gels to see whether the flash can recognise colour temperature of any other gels than the CTOs supplied with it. - Unfortunately all my other colour correction gels are cut to sizes that won't fit the Canon gel holder, so I need to buy some sheets of gel before I can do any testing.

It would seem a bit silly if Canon has only designed the colour temperature sensing to only work with the two supplied gels!

Are Lens Hoods Universal?

I posted on the forum here recently about having a Canon lens hood on a Tamron lens. No one replied (lol I wasn't expecting anyone to really) So I gave it a shot, I bought an aftermarket EW-83E Lens hood, the one compatible with the Canon 17-40mm f/4L. I bought it thinking that since they both have the same diameter lens and the same focal length, it should work on it and what do you know, IT WORKED!

EDIT: Sorry forgot to describe the hood
It feels alright, flimsy plastic, not fabricated like the actual lens hood. It's actually a very tight fit so I keep it on the right why, even when putting it in my bag because I don't want the thread to file down or something. It doesn't do a good job with flares though. That's why I'm opting out for the EW-83H :D

Now, I'm going to buy the Canon EW-83H (correct me if i'm wrong but it's the Canon hood for the 24-105 f/4L) Because I feel like this hood doesn't really do anything for flare, and since I'm shooting cropped I won't vignette.

My Question is, why are there no lens hoods that are marketed as universal lens hoods? I know there are screw on lens hood that are seen as "universal" but they don't work do they. So why can a Canon Lens hood fit onto a Tamron lens, and why doesn't a third market party create a very functional (stylish if possible) lens hood? Canon replacement hoods are extreme expensive and Tamron hoods are hard to find.

Ps. I've attached some pics to show that it does work :D

Excellent service at canon customer service centre- beyond words

When I first bought my camera 5d mark 3, I noticed an over exposed vertical band on left side of image, so I sent it in for repair at customer service centre in Mississauga. Since it is still under warranty, they replaced the new sensor and updated the firmware. It only took 3 business days to completed the repair! I just need to only showed them my receipt.

On Thanksgiving holiday I went out for photo shoot and my camera accidentally fell onto a rock; resulting a broken lcd and some scratched marks. Due to the impact, the lens also resulting a broken rear mount. So i dropped it off for repair at same location without hesitation because I knew they would do a great job like the first time I sent it in.

The following hour, I mean literately the next hour after I dropped my camera and lens in, I received an email for an estimate of the repairs. I was like wow! so fast. That night I made the transaction online for the repairs. The next day, I checked the repair status online and found out my camera has been completed! and my lens completed the following day. I am just beyond words how fast the service was.

That's not all, there's more great news to it. When I picked up my camera and lens, I notice the scratched marks has been fixed without any additional charges, sensor cleaned, firmware updated, rear camera lcd, top lcd, shutter released button, all covered with protected sticker. I am just overwhelmed and excited with the great services I getting at Canon Canada, the completed repair shows how the technician put a lot meticulous care and efforts into. The overall cost of repairs is not even that expensive.

I don't work for Canon or neither CPS member, I just wanted to shout out my great experiences. If any of you hesitated to send your gear in for repair at canon due to cost or whatever it is, please don't hesitate anymore, just do it! I will certainly guaranteed you will be very satisfied. They will take great care of your gears and turn-around time for repair is lighting fast. I don't know about USA Canon, cant comment on that.

40mm 2.8 backfocus on 60D?

Just want to see if this was/is an issue with anyone using this lens on a 60D...

I sent the first 40 back because of EXTREME backfocus. The next one I got seemed to be ok at first (at the time I got it), but now I notice it backfocusing again. It seems to be more or less fine near MFD, but as I get farther away from the subject, the further off the focus is. It's not as bad as the first one but it's still enough to get OOF shots at 2.8. Even at 5.6 it is noticeable because the sharpest point of the picture is still behind the selected focus point, giving the picture a softer look...

A bit frustrating...as the 60D does not have an AFMA/autofocus correction function, I've had to figure out other ways to compensate for this unfortunate phenomenon. I've had on/off success with turning the lens focus ring clockwise a bit after focus, before taking the shot...but it is really tough to manual focus with the 60D especially from a distance. The other option is to use Live view mode for critical shots...but it can be slooooow (if not nonfunctional) in low light.

I've also got a 5D but this lens is really for the 60D as a travel combo. thoughts?
